    In the process of shaping particular academic disciplines, there is a need to synthesise the existing research results and on their basis propose new methodological approaches and indicate the possibility of applying new directions of theoretic-cognitive and application research. This is the idea to which the theme and purpose of this paper refers. It proposes a new holistic research concept. The first part of the article reviews the hitherto research problems concerning the operation of an industrial plant (enterprise). Presented are the changing research concepts that initially treated the industrial plant as a landscape element, and then as a production plant affecting the processes of industry concentration, as well as socio-economic and cultural changes of the surroundings. In the second part, in the light of the theory of the dynamic system, the assumption was made that an industrial enterprise is not an isolated element of geographical space, but one of its functional components. Its role changes under the influence of endogenous and exogenous factors, as well as in the process of civilisation development. Using the idea of a dynamic system and the model of the functioning of geographical space, a new, holistic concept of research into the operation and development of an industrial enterprise is proposed. It includes various relationships: between the enterprise and the elements of geographical space (natural, socio-economic, cultural), between the rules of economic development, between different functional types of enterprises, competitive, between the categories of the environment, between the power elites and types of policies. The proposed model approach makes it possible to define various relations with the enterprise and allows for a comprehensive understanding of its functioning in a diversified surroundings, and it provides for the definition of a more precise strategy for its development.

    The paper proposes a research pattern, which can be applied to the works in the field of industrial geography. It includes several stages of research, among others: an assessment of the formation process of the company and the spatial structure of industry in defined spatial system, setting targets for further reconstruction of the initial state, identifying opportunities to generate new and use of existing factors of development and the possibilities of reducing barriers, decision-making process in the selection of the most effective methods for managing organizational goals, the establishment of transformation guidelines of industrial structures, analysis of the conversion process mechanism from initial to a final state, assessment of the final state for the formulation of further directions of change.

    Światowy kryzys gospodarczy, zapoczątkowany w 2007 roku w Stanach Zjednoczonych Ameryki, w różnym czasie i stopniu wpłynął na funkcjonowanie poszczególnych sektorów i gospodarek krajów świata. W Polsce jego symptomy zauważalne były nieco później. W pierwszej fazie kryzysu (2007–2008) nie stwierdzono bezpośrednio jego skutków, co wynikało z faktu, że początkowo wpływ turbulencji na światowych rynkach finansowych na gospodarkę krajową ograniczał się głównie do rynków kapitałowych, w mniejszym stopniu dotykając sektory rolnictwa, przemysłu i usług. Jednak w miarę pogłębiania się tendencji recesyjnych w gospodarce światowej kryzys stopniowo zaczął wpływać także na wyniki działalności gospodarczej, w tym również w sektorze przemysłowym. Dopiero w 2009 r. stwierdzono spadek wartości produkcji sprzedanej w stosunku do roku poprzedniego. Czy miało to jednak swoje odzwierciedlenie w zmianach struktur przestrzennych przemysłu? Blisko pięcioletni okres funkcjonowania gospodarki w stanie recesji pozwala już, jak się wydaje, na podjęcie próby oceny takich zmian, dlatego w pracy badawczej dokonano analizy przemian struktury przestrzennej przemysłu Polski w trakcie kryzysu, w oparciu o podstawowe mierniki potencjału, takie jak wielkość zatrudnienia i wartość produkcji sprzedanej oraz wskaźniki koncentracji przemysłu. Za rok bazowy przyjęto 2007 rok, uznając go umownie za rok przedkryzysowy. We wnioskach podsumowujących szczegółowe analizy wskazano, że wpływ kryzysu na zmiany struktury przestrzennej przemysłu jest bardzo ograniczony, a obserwowane tendencje przemian nie odbiegały zasadniczo od ogólnych trendów rozwoju przemysłu Polski, zidentyfikowanych w wyniku wcześniejszych badań. Należy jednak podkreślić, że struktura przemysłu charakteryzuje się dużą „bezwładnością”, ze względu na skomplikowanie i rozmiary procesu inwestycyjnego, stąd w okresie kilku lat nie należy się spodziewać głębokich i gwałtownych jej przemian, nawet jeśli pojawi się recesja gospodarcza.
    The global economic crisis which started in 2007 in the United States of America, at different times and to a different extent affected various sectors and national economies of the world. In Poland, its symptoms were noticeable later than in other countries. In the first phase of the crisis (2007-2008), there was no direct effect, due to the fact that initially the turmoil on global financial markets had weaker effect on the national economy, and it was limited mainly to capital markets, affecting the sectors of agriculture, industry, and services to a lesser extent. However, as recession grew in force, the crisis gradually began to affect also the results of economic activity, including industry. In 2009, a significant decrease in the value of production sold, as compared to the previous year, was observed. The question is whether this had been reflected in changes of spatial industrial structure. The five-year period of the economic recession seems to be long enough to assess such changes. Therefore, the paper analyses the transformation of the spatial structure of Polish industry during crisis, based on the basic indicators of potential, such as employment and the value of production sold, as well as concentration coefficients. The year 2007 was adopted as the base year, treating it as a pre-crisis year. The conclusions of the detailed analysis indicated that the impact of crisis on the change of the spatial structure of the Polish industry is very limited and the observed trends of change did not differ substantially from the general industrial development trends in Poland, identified by previous studies. It should be noted, however, that the structure of industry is characterized by high “inertia” due to the complexity and size of the investment process. Therefore, in the following several years no deep and sudden transformation should be expected, even during economic recession.

Model considerations is partly illustrated with the examples of industrial change at the national level.

    The purpose of the paper was to synthetically characterise the changes of spatial differentiation of industry innovation in Poland in 2005–2015 in the context of research problems of innovativeness with the use of the cross product. The availability of data limited the scope of the research. For example, innovative activity was presented through the analysis of the share of innovative units in the total number of industrial enterprises and the size of expenditure on innovative activities incurred by industrial enterprises. The analysis of the share of innovative products in the value of total production and net revenues from sales of innovative products in net revenues from total sales was also made. The analyses mentioned were presented against the research and development situation in Poland as a whole and by voivodeship. Research confirmed that significant spatial diversity distinguishes the spatial structure of innovation in Polish industry by voivodeship. Moreover, it is significant that innovative expenditures show low efficiency.Spatial structure of industry innovativeness in Poland was highly stable in the analysed period. The changes in the spatial structure were insignificant and reached only 4% in synthetic terms. More substantial transformations of the structure, often of an abrupt character, concerned only the selected features of industry innovativeness.

    Artykuł podejmuje problematykę oceny działalności przemysłowej w czasie trwania pandemii SARS‑CoV-2 w Polsce w układzie województw. Celem opracowania jest identyfikacja wpływu pandemii SARS‑CoV-2 w latach 2020–2021 na działalność przemysłową oraz określenie jej konsekwencji w strukturze przestrzennej przemysłu w poszczególnych województwach. Zakres omawianych zagadnień był uzależniony od dostępności danych, zwłaszcza na poziome regionalnym. W opracowaniu zaprezentowano analizy dotyczące podstawowych cech charakteryzujących działalność przemysłową, takich jak wartość produkcji sprzedanej przemysłu, liczba pracujących, wartość wskaźnika ogólnego klimatu koniunktury w przetwórstwie przemysłowym. Dopełnieniem analiz struktury regionalnej przemysłu były badania przeżywalności podmiotów, mierzone liczbą podmiotów podejmujących działalność w przemyśle i liczbą podmiotów wyrejestrowanych. Wyniki przeprowadzonych badań wskazują na wyraźny wpływ pierwszej fali koronawirusa (II kwartał 2020 r.) na podstawowe parametry działalności przemysłowej. W okresie pandemicznym (między IV kwartałem 2019 r. a II kwartałem 2021 r.) struktura przestrzenna przemysłu w Polsce odznaczała się dużą stabilnością – zmieniła się jedynie w niespełna 3%. Pomimo dużej stabilności struktura ta podlegała jednak pewnym wahaniom. Największe zmiany dokonały się pomiędzy II kwartałem 2020 r. a II kwartałem 2019 r. Zasadniczą cechą zachodzących zmian strukturalnych jest relatywne zmniejszanie się dysproporcji pomiędzy rozdziałem produkcji przemysłowej na poszczególne województwa Polski.
    The article deals with the issue of the assessment of industrial activity during the SARS‑CoV-2 pandemic in Poland by voivodeship. The aim of the study is to identify the scale of the impact of the SARS‑CoV-2 pandemic period in the years 2020–2021 on industrial activity and to determine the consequences in the spatial structure of industry in the system of voivodeships in Poland. The scope of issues adopted for analysis depended on the availability of data, especially at the regional level. The study presents analyses of the basic features characterising industrial activity, i.e. the value of industrial production, the number of employees, the number of entities registered in industrial activity, or the value of the general economic climate indicator in manufacturing. The analyses of the regional structure of industry were complemented by the survey of the survival rate of entities, measured by the number of entities undertaking activities in industry and the number of entities deregistered in the quarters of the analysed period. The results of the conducted research indicate a clear effect of the impact of the first wave of COVID-19 cases (Q2 2020) on the basic parameters of industrial activity. During the pandemic period (Q4 2019 and Q2 2021), the spatial structure of industry in Poland was characterised by high stability, it changed only by less than 3%. Despite high stability, the spatial structure of industrial production was, however, subject to certain fluctuations. The largest changes in the spatial structure of industrial production took place between Q2 2020 and Q2 2019 – 4%. The essential feature of the ongoing structural changes is the relative reduction of disproportions between the distribution of industrial production to individual Polish voivodeships.
