Opis:
Idiopathic Parkinson’s disease (PD) impairs working memory, but the exact nature of this deficit in terms of the underlying cognitive mechanisms is not well understood. In this study patients with mild clinical symptoms of PD were compared with matched healthy control subjects on a computerized battery of tests designed to assess spatial working memory and verbal working memory. In the spatial working memory task, subjects were required to recall a sequence of four locations. The verbal working memory task was methodologically identical except for the modality of the stimuli used, requiring subjects to orally recall a sequence of six digits. In either case, half of the sequences were structured in a way that allowed ‘chunking’, while others were unstructured. This manipulation was designed to dissociate the strategic component of task performance from the memory-load component. Mild medicated patients with PD were impaired only on the structured versions of the verbal working memory tasks. The analogous deficit in the spatial working memory was less pronounced. These findings are in agreement with the hypothesis that working memory deficits in PD reflect mainly the executive component of the tasks and that the deficits may be at least partly modality-independent.

Opis:
The form of mental images in congenitally blind people is intensely debated by researchers. In order to get a better insight into this topic, we conducted an experiment during which the task for congenitally blind individuals was to learn 2D tactile shapes and then mentally rotate them. The control group consisted of blindfolded sighted individuals. The visuo-spatial working memory model was treated as a theoretical framework for the theoretical debate. The aim of the study was to determine whether the accuracy of mental rotation is lower in congenitally blind than in sighted individuals and whether the difference in accuracy between the groups depends on the complexity of tactile figures. We also tested if the complexity of the figure and the background (grid or frame) influences the passive and active components of visuo-spatial working memory. Results show that congenitally blind subjects learned the shapes of figures by touch and rotated them faster than sighted subjects. It was established that the learning time depends on the complexity of figures and backgrounds. Figures presented on a complex background of a grid required more time to learn then figures in a frame. Moreover, sighted individuals required more time to learn complex figures than they did to learn simple ones. This was not the case with the congenitally blind. The rotation task was performed with greater accuracy for figures presented on a plain background compared to the complex background, and faster for figures drawn in a frame than for those on a grid. The study has shown that the active component of the visuo-spatial working memory engaged during mental rotation works with at least equal efficiency in congenitally blind individuals compared to sighted ones.

This study examines the perception of space and the mental landscapes in Joseph Roth’s travel reportages from southern France. Particular focus will be placed on the articles that Joseph Roth wrote for the “Frankfurter Zeitung” and collected in a book published posthumously, in 1956 with the title Im mittäglichen Frankreich and afterwards under the title Die weißen Städte. In this text the relationship between the real topography, the literary representation and the subjective point of view of the author, might give us a new definition of the concept of “space” and “belonging” beyond language. The aim is to analyze the representation that Joseph Roth gives us, through his articles, that builds up new spaces and is in relation with the actual place and with the topography of the individual and collective memory.

Opis:
Objectives The study analyzed the effectiveness of military pilots’ behavior under the influence of false horizon illusion – a false perception of the real horizon. It was assumed that visual illusion tends to cause spatial disorientation (SD). The question was asked which orientation of the sloping cloud (right/left) would have a bigger impact on SD. The effectiveness of the flight profile performance under the influence of visual illusion was analyzed in the context of the field dependence (FD), field independence (FI) or field intermediate dependence (FINT) of perception, the effectiveness of attention and operational memory. Material and Methods The study covered 66 pilots. A flight simulator was used as a measure of effectiveness in performing the flight profile in spatial disorientation conditions. The effectiveness of attention and working memory was diagnosed using 4 computer tasks. Results It was revealed that the right sloping cloud (compared to the left sloping cloud) had a greater impact on military pilots’ behavior. The cognitive style distinguishes the accuracy of the flight profile performance from the inclined cloud pointing to the right. The comparisons showed significant differences between the FI and FD pilot groups. All the pilots demonstrated the right-sided asymmetry of the flight rate. While performing tasks on the simulator, the FI pilots were characterized by a more stable rate than the FINT pilots. Conclusions A general conclusion is that the “correct falling cloud” had a greater impact on pilots’ behavior. The presented results confirm the hypothesis that susceptibility to visual illusions is significantly increased in the pilots characterized by field dependence while the pilots with the FINT style of perception are characterized by a greater variability of the flight rate.
This article analyzes the relations between space and the subject (i.e., the configuration composed of the character’s I, the protagonist’s, I and the narrator’s I) in two short stories by Zygmunt Haupt, namely “Gołębie z placu Teodora” [Pigeons from Theodor’s Square] and “O Stefci, o Chaimie Immerglücku i o scytyjskich bransoletkach” [About Stefcia, Chaim Immerglück and Scythian bracelets]. The author draws on Victoria Nelson’s concept of psychotopography – it is a dynamic projection of subjective experiences, memories, and fantasies onto the space of the represented world and at the same time a system of influences and interactions that connect the literary I with the external space. Psychotopographic metaphors often refer to traumatic, repressed or (anamnestic) inaccessible memories.

Opis:
This study examined efficiency of pilots' behavior in condition of visual illusion od false horizon. It has been assumed that visual illusion of false horizon tends to produce spatial disorientation.Efficiency of execution of flight's profile in conditions of spatial disorientation was analyzed in context of FDI. Additionally, efficiency of attention and working memory were analyzed. 29 pilots participated in the experiment (air-raid 1229, 14 hours +/- 844,26; age 32,97; +/- 6,56). Efficiency of execution of flight profile has been defined on simulator YAPETUS based on indicators of course - variability of rate. Styles of perception, efficiency of attentions and efficiency of working memory were researched by means of computer tasks. It appears that false horizon illusion influence the efficiency of pilot's behavior. In conditions of cognitive conflict: visual field - navigational instruments, younger pilots and pilots with FINT style of perception (mobile FD and fixed FI), lower efficiency of selective and divided attention, less resistance to distraction, weak mechanism of inhibition and lower efficiency of updating working memory, were most strongly exposed to disorientation.

Opis:
The article deals with three main issues: the understanding of curriculum in context, the ability of contextualisation, and retention of knowledge in long-term memory. The paper first suggests principles based on the coherence model of instruction, which aims to achieve coherence of knowledge of isolated facts through a network of semantic relationships. Then, the theoretical basis of the model is described, including spatial learning strategies, cooperative learning, and excursions in an authentic environment supported by mobile devices. A methodology of teaching was designed according to the principles of the coherence model, and a virtual guide through educational exhibitions was developed. The virtual guide was tested with students of a primary school during an experimental lecture in the Ostrava Zoo. An evaluation of the coherence model and the virtual guide was carried out using three methods: an observation of students’ behaviour and learning during the experimental lecture, a pedagogical experiment, and an evaluation of questionnaires. The results of the evaluation proved that the coherence model of instruction has a positive impact on understanding in context, ability of contextualisation, and retention of the curriculum in long-term memory.
