We prove that if the Euclidean plane $ℝ^2$ contains an uncountable collection of pairwise disjoint copies of a tree-like continuum X, then the symmetric span of X is zero, sX = 0. We also construct a modification of the Oversteegen-Tymchatyn example: for each ε > 0 there exists a tree $X ⊂ ℝ^2$ such that σX < ε but X cannot be covered by any 1-chain. These are partial solutions of some well-known problems in continua theory.

The aim of the study was to verify hypotheses about time changeability of dream characteristics depending on the participants’ age and affective value of the dream. The study was conducted online. Participants of the study were 68 individuals between the age of 17 and 85. The participants were asked to prepare detailed descriptions of their dreams, next they had to identify elements of the dreams, refer them to their real life, and assess their affective value. In the dreams of late adolescents, and young and middle-aged adults the most frequently recalled period in a positive context turned out to be late adolescence and early adulthood, whereas in a negative context the participants would recall their present developmental phase and the period of late childhood. Unpleasant dreams of older individuals were mainly connected with the period of middle adulthood, whereas those pleasant ones referred to various periods of their entire life.

Opis:
Individual differences in second language acquisition (SLA) encompass differences in working memory capacity, which is believed to be one of the most crucial factors influencing language learning. However, in Poland research on the role of working memory in SLA is scarce due to a lack of proper Polish instruments for measuring this construct. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the process of construction and validation of the Polish Listening Span (PLSPAN) as a tool intended to measure verbal working memory of adults. The article presents the requisite theoretical background as well as the information about the PLSPAN, that is, the structure of the test, the scoring procedures and the steps taken with the aim of validating it.

W pracy przedstawiono wpływ obciążeń zmiennych cyklicznie na nośność belek żelbetowych (maksymalną siłę obciążenia w danym schemacie statycznym) z uwzględnieniem statycznej wyznaczalności elementów. Badania przeprowadzono na 28. belkach żelbetowych, w tym 12 dwuprzęsłowych - statycznie niewyznaczalnych i 16. jednoprzęsłowych swobodnie podpartych, różniących się konstrukcją i stopniem zbrojenia podłużnego (dwa stopnie zbrojenia) oraz programami obciążania (trzy programy), w tym obciążenie, modelujące przejazd pojazdu, przyjęte jako sinusoidalnie cyklicznie zmienne po 100 tys. cykli realizowanych dla trzech zakresów wartości sił obciążających. Na podstawie analizy porównawczej zarejestrowanych sił niszczących i nośności teoretycznej, można stwierdzić, że obciążenie zmienne cyklicznie już po 300 tys. cykli powoduje zniszczenie belek statycznie niewyznaczalnych na poziomie ponad 20% niższym niż nośność teoretyczna, natomiast nie wpływa na zmniejszenie nośności belek statycznie wyznaczalnych. Zaobserwowana zależność powinna być uwzględniona przy opracowaniu metody oceny stanu technicznego konstrukcji żelbetowej, a szczególnie metody oceny jej trwałości.
In this paper, an effect of cyclic and variable loads on the capacity of reinforced concrete beams is investigated. The study was conducted on 28 reinforced concrete beams including 12 two-span beams - statically indeterminate and 16 simply supported single-span beams. Those beams were differentiated by the structure and degree of longitudinal reinforcement (two degrees of reinforcement) and load applied programs (three programs types) including the monotonic load, load with unloadings and cyclic load. The last one was taken as a sinusoidal cyclic load with 100,000 cycles carried out for three ranges of loading forces. On the basis of a comparative analysis it can be concluded that in the case of the two-span beams, the imposition of 252,000 load cycles results in 20% drop of the beam capacity. Such an effect is not observed for load with unloadings and in the case of simply supported beams.

W artykule przedstawiony zostanie przypadek wyjątkowego obciążenia obiektu inżynierskiego stanowiącego przejście dla zwierząt dziko żyjących. W szczegółach opisane zostaną wybrane elementy wymiarowania oraz proces budowy żelbetowego obiektu inżynierskiego z elementów prefabrykowanych Con/Span. Na etapie realizacji przedmiotowego obiektu doszło do incydentu gdzie samochód ciężarowy uderzył w ściągi montażowe. W wyniku uderzenia zerwanych zostało 34 szt. ściągów na 18 elementach nośnych przęsła oraz stwierdzono widoczną deformację ściągów na 3 pozostałych prefabrykatach. Na skutek tego ściany prefabrykatów doznały przemieszczeń poziomych których to skutki oraz zostaną opisane w dalszej części artykułu.

Opis:
Angular coal clasts confined to coarse-grained feldspathic sandstone deposited in the Tuchlovice Mine pit in the Kladno-Rakovník basin were studied. These fragments of various orientation consisting of banded, dull and bright coal of Bolsovian age (=Westphalian C) occur as an admixture being some tenths of a millimetre up to 40x30x20 mm large. The clasts are coalified into high volatile bituminous coal showing an average reflectance corresponding to vitrinite (Rr = 0.64%). They reveal no signs of progressing diagenetic changes after their redeposition. Some clasts exhibit cracks filled with clay minerals, which constitute common admixture in coal seams of this basin. Cracks do not extend into the adjacent sediment. Their origin is connected with coalification processes in original coal seam, which occurred prior to erosion. The investigation of miospores showed that the coal clasts come from the eroded Lubná coal seams of Bolsovian age. Since the Radnice Member is the oldest unit of the central and west Bohemian basins, the coalification of organic matter into high volatile bituminous coal must have occurred within this member, i.e., during some hundred thousand years at a depth of only a few tens, maximum first hundred metres. The achieved results argue for a high paleotemperature gradient, which must have existed during the Carboniferous in the Bohemian Massif.Similar conditions are known, e.g., from South Wales basin in UK (Gayer et al., 1996) and from the Upper Silesian basin (Kožušníková et al., 1999).

Great spans were already used in ancient times; however, it was the first and second industrial revolution that laid the roots of the transportation sector. Channels, roads, rail lines were built and consequently train stations followed. Prestige was very important for many railway companies and cities, and this desire was expressed by splendid structures. Although after World War II many train stations were demolished, the high-speed train brought an upturn again. With new technologies available it became possible to create spacious, light structures formed freely. The train station is the main access point to the transportation system, but it also serves as a public space. Here architecture, engineering and industrial design overlap. Structural elements, despite their loadbearing function have a major impact on the quality of the architectural space. Expression and excitement of architecture are important issues. Proper choice of structural solutions, using shades, shadows and textures make the train station a distinctive place. I would like to present an overview of the development of railway station design and give an outlook to the latest trends in the construction of passenger transportation hubs.

Earlier research by the author brought about findings suggesting that people in a special way process words related to demands of a problem they previously solved, even when they do not consciously notice this relationship. The findings concerned interference in the task in which the words appeared, a shift in affective responses to them that depended on sex of the participants, and impaired memory of the words. The aim of this study was to replicate these effects and to find out whether they are related to working memory (WM) span of the participants, taken as a measure of the individual’s ability to control attention. Participants in the experimental group solved a divergent problem, then performed an ostensibly unrelated speeded affective classification task concerning each of a series of nouns, and then performed an unexpected cued recall task for the nouns. Afterwards, a task measuring WM span was administered. In the control group there was no problem-solving phase. Response latencies for words immediately following problem-related words in the classification task were longer in the experimental than in the control group, but there was no relationship between this effect and WM span. Solving the problem, in interaction with sex of the participants and, independently, with their WM span, influenced affective responses to problem-related words. Recall of these words, however, was not impaired in the experimental group.

Opis:
Profile deck steel sheets are used in composite deck slabs. These sheets are standard in dimensions and shapes besides they are supplied with embossments and indentations. Such sheets are not available in Iraqi markets nowadays therefore people used another type of sheets which are corrugated without embossments or indentations in very wide range. This study covers the use of such sheets in composite slabs as decks instead of standard profiled steel sheets. The study comprises testing slabs of dimensions 0.9 × 2.5 m reinforced by steel fabric mesh and rested on corrugated sheets. Two types of shear spans are selected shorter and longer to study the longitudinal shear force transmitted due to the applied loads according to the Eurocode 4. The shorter shear spans are 600, 500 and 400 mm while longer one is 800, 750 and 700 mm. The study extended to support the requirements of design equation of the Eurocode by shear bond method also known as m–k method. The evaluated values of m and k are 0.094 and 65 respectively. The result of k which plays a very important role in shear transfer is small compared to what available in literature, therefore it is recommended to make use of shear connectors in such construction or any else method.

The article presents parametric analysis regarding the impact of subgrade and backfill stiffness on values and distribution of bending moments in the structural elements of a small integral box bridge made of cast in situ reinforced concrete. The analyzed parameters are the modulus of subgrade reaction under and behind the bridge structure (kv kh). At the beginning, the author presents the integral box bridge and selected parts of the bridge design. In particular, the author focuses on the method of modeling of the subgrade stiffness parameters under and behind the bridge structure, as well as their impact on the values and distribution of bending moments in the bridge structural elements. The bridge was designed by the author and built on the M9 motorway between the towns of Waterford and Kilcullen in Ireland. In conclusions, the author shares his knowledge and experience relating to the design of small integral bridges and culverts and puts forward recommendations as to further research on these type of structures in Poland.

A peniche is designed to offset a half-span aircraft model from the wind tunnel wall boundary layer. This strategy of model mounting results in large influence on the meas-ured aerodynamic coefficients, compared with full-span data, The negative influence is especially important in high-lift conditions leading to incorrect maximum lift behaviour, A very time-consuming set of python scripts was constructed to allow automatic meshing of the wing-body configuration of the DLR F11 high-lift model placed in the European Transonic Wind tunnel (ETW, Germany). Variations due to different concepts of model mountings (peniches) were included. A block-structured FLOWer solver (DLR, Germany) was used for all flow simulations, simplifying the mesh generation process by using the chimera overlapping grids technique, Preliminary results are available for a full-span configuration obtained with a symmetry condition at the mirror plane. Computations of the half-span model placed directly at the wall or mounted using a standard peniche are also presented.

Girders with corrugated steel web are preferred and widely used in recently constructed bridges and industrial buildings. Sandwich core girders with corrugated web are constructed by adding two plates (skins) to the corrugated web. This study aims to investigate the shear span-to-depth ratio impact on the performance of sandwich core steel girders with corrugated web. Three span-to-depth ratios (a/d): 1.0, 1.833 and 2.5, were examined. The test includes three girders with sandwich web thickness of 30 mm, three girders with 60 mm sandwich web thickness, and three girders with conventional flat webs. A total of nine simply supported steel girders subjected to a concentrated load were fabricated and tested up to failure. The responses of the examined girders are presented in term of the load deflection curves, the ultimate load, and the maximum displacement. Among the conclusions drawn in this study that girders with sandwich core thickness of 30 mm demonstrate higher ultimate load capacity than girders with sandwich core of 60 mm, the maximum difference in the ultimate load capacity was about 20% and can be seen at a/d equals to 1.0. The results also pointed out that the behavior of the beams was noticeably impacted by the shear span-to-depth ratio.
