The ar ti cle pres ents the re sults of a de tailed study of the geo log i cal struc ture of the £eba Bar rier in the R¹bka crosssec tion (South ern Bal tic, Po land). The bar rier sep a rates Lake £ebsko from the Bal tic. Five sed i men tary com plexes were dis tin guished there (M2–M6). The spa tial vari abil ity of the grain-size dis tri bu tion was ex am ined and suc ces sion stages of the mol lusc fauna oc cur ring in the in di vid ual sed i men tary com plexes were dis tin guished. Ra dio car bon dating was used to es tab lish the age of the most im por tant events dur ing the pro cess of for ma tion of the bar rier, which took place in the course of sev eral rel a tive sea-level changes. The first sed i men tary com plex (M2) at R¹bka is connected with the sec ond ingression (i2) of the Bal tic Sea (ca. 6,700–6,000 14C years BP), sea-level sta bi li za tion (6,000–5,500 14C years BP), and at last sea-level low er ing (5,500–5,000 14C years BP) in the re gion of the Gardno-£eba Coastal Plain. The sed i men tary com plex M3 de vel oped in a la goonal en vi ron ment when the bar rier was sit u ated north of its pres ent po si tion (5,000–3,000 14C BP). The next low er ing of the sea-level made the la goon shal lower and caused the emer gence of small but al ready subaerial stretches of bar rier land with a fresh wa ter fauna in the north (4,880±40 14C BP). With the next ingression stage (i3), which took place be tween 4,500 and 3,000 BP, the bar rier shifted to its pres ent-day po si tion and the la goon changed into a fresh wa ter lake. From 3,000 to 1,700 14C BP fos sil soil and peats de vel oped on the bar rier sur face as a re sult of an other sea-level low er ing. The last ingression stages (i4 and i5), youn - ger than 1,700 BP, built up the bar rier, prac ti cally in its to day’s lo ca tion (sed i men tary com plexes M4 and M5). The youn gest sed i men tary com plex (M-6) is rep re sented by pres ent-day beach sands.

Opis:
During the construction of mathematical models for mapping hydrogeological conditions it is necessary to apply simplifications, both in the geological structure and in hydrogeological parameters used. The present note discusses problems surrounding the mapping of glaciotectonic disturbances that occur in the northern part of Wolin Island (northwest Poland). For this part of the island, a direct outflow of groundwater towards the Baltic Sea basin has been determined on the basis of geophysical survey results. An important feature in the hydrogeological conditions here is the isolation of groundwater from both the Baltic Sea and Szczecin Lagoon by clay with a Cretaceous xenolith. Such a geological structure explains the presence of perched water at considerable heights in zones close to the cliffs, without any significant hydraulic connection with surrounding reservoirs. Hydrogeological conditions of Wolin Island have been modelled using the Visual MODFLOW package v.4.2. In the vertical section, these conditions can be simplified to one aquifer (Pleistocene-Holocene), in which two aquifers can be distinguished. In a large part of the island, these remain in mutual hydraulic contact: layer I – upper, with an unconfined aquifer, and layer II – lower, with a confined aquifer, locally an unconfined one. The schematisation of hydrogeological conditions adopted here has allowed to reproduce present groundwater dynamics in the study area.

The aim of the paper is to present selected ice phenomena occurring on the waters of the southern coast of the Baltic Sea which may be of tourism value. On the basis of his own observations and research over the period 2002-11, the author analysed interesting ice phenomena documented in 20 photographs showing in the main ice forms (grease ice ridges, ice hummocks, thrust ice). The photographs present the sea (8), lagoons (7) and lakes (5). The author has included brief descriptions of selected ice phenomena, focusing on interesting forms and their origins, which may encourage potential tourists to observe and explore icecovered water bodies. Ice tourism could be a part of cognitive, environmental, specialist, hiking, winter, seasonal or even occasional tourism.

Opis:
In the course of fieldwork based on geological and landslide mapping and spatial analyses of map information at least 2 types of landslides were identified. Type I: simple landslides developed in homogeneous and undisturbed rocks, for instance – loams, clays and sands. This type of landslide includes many examples developed mainly on the stretch (segment of the studied area) approximately between 132.25 and 133.50 km and 128.50 and 129.50 km of the Polish coastline. Type II: complex landslides in which the movement and displacement of rock masses occurs under complex geological and hydrogeological conditions. The complex factors are determined by phenomena such as glaciotectonics, discontinuities of rock layers and thrust zones; the slip surface occurs at considerable depths, and sometimes several slip surfaces can be distinguished. These landslide types are located in the vicinity of Jastrzębia Góra and Rozewie, near km 134 and 131.5. Prediction of the formation of this landslide types is difficult. Even if long-term observations are available, the mass movement, variable over time, is difficult to interpret. It is clear that the changes are continuous, but occur with varying intensity. Proper recognition of the types of mass movement is crucial to establishing the appropriate methods to prevent their development.

Opis:
The Baltic Sea is characterized by a seasonal variation of phytoplankton structure. These organisms are particularly sensitive to changes in various environmental parameters. Cyclic, recurring annually fluctuation of species composition, abundance and biomass of phytoplankton is a consequence of these changes. Spatial and temporal variability of particular groups of phytoplankton is not the same in different areas of the Baltic Sea. The purpose of this work was to determine the spatial and temporal distribution of phytoplankton in three chosen areas of the coastal zone of the southern Baltic Sea (Ustka, Poddąbie and Rowy) in the period of November 2014 - September 2016. Mean values of abundance and biomass of phytoplankton for the surveyed areas were typical for this type of coastal waters. In each of the surveyed areas the same dominat species in terms of the abundance and biomass were observed. A growth of diatoms was recorded only in the area of Ustka, which could have been caused by the inflow of river waters. Seasonal surveys of phytoplankton indicated that in the case of the studies regarding this parameter – taxonomic composition, abundance and biomass in the same surveyed area were similar at the three research stations (e.g. 75-80%), depending on the season of the year. On this basis, it was concluded that, whether carrying out the monitoring of phytoplankton or planned investments, the sample collection frequency had a greater significance than the number of research stations.
W każdych z trzech badanych rejonów można zaobserwować te same dominanty w liczebności i biomasie.

Opis:
The coastline in the Jastrzębia Góra area can be divided into three major zones of general importance: a beach and barrier section, a cliff section, and a section protected by a heavy hydrotechnical construction. These areas are characterised by a diverse geology and origin, and hence different vulnerability to erosion. In addition, observations have demonstrated a different pace of erosion within each zone. Based on the results obtained by remote sensing methods (analysis of aerial photographs and maps), it has been determined that the coastline in the barrier area, i.e., to the west of Jastrzębia Góra, moved landwards by about 130 m, in a period of 100 years, and 80 m over about 50 years. A smaller displacement of the shoreline could be observed within the cliff. Between the middle of the twentieth and the start of the twenty-first centuries the shore retreated by about 25 m. However, in recent years, an active landslide has led to the displacement of the uppermost part of the cliff locally up to 25 m. Another issue is, functioning since 2000, a heavy hydrotechnical construction which has been built in order to protect the most active part of the cliff. The construction is not stable and its western part, over a distance of 50 m, has moved almost 2 m vertically downwards and c. 2.5 m horizontally towards the sea in the past two years. This illustrates that the erosional factor does not comprise only marine abrasion, but also involves land-based processes determined by geology and hydrogeology. Changes in the shoreline at the beach and barrier part are constantly conditioned by rising sea levels, the slightly sloping profile of the sea floor and low elevation values of the backshore and dune areas. Cliffs are destroyed by mass wasting and repetitive storm surges that are responsible for the removal of the colluvium which protects the coast from adverse wave effects. Presumably, mass movements combined with groundwater outflow from the cliff, plus sea abrasion cause destabilisation of the cliff protection construction.
