Opis:
The article aims to analyse a sonic turn in IKEA marketing practices that can be observed since 2017. The selection of advertisements that are presented in the paper is studied from two perspectives. Firstly, as a capitalist strategy of producing a demand for a certain product allowing to reperform acoustic harmony that is inherently connected to the notion of a home in western culture. Secondly, in quite the opposite way, as a possible aesthetic impulse capable of changing the consumers’ perception of indoor soundscapes. The frame for this research is mainly Brandon LaBelle’s sound studies theory and Chantal Mouffe’s political theory.

Opis:
The vocal side of language has aroused the interest of scientists and researchers since antiquity. This direc¬tion in linguistic research is still relevant today, as evidenced by numerous treatises and experiments. In the present contribution, the authors tried to generalize and to analyze the most important means of pho¬nostilistics and their realization in different types of rhyming discourse, such as nursery rhymes, children’s poems, puzzles, lyrical poems etc. It has been proved very clearly that alliteration, assonance, phonetic imitation, phonetic symbolism as well as linguistic design are characterized by the aesthetic function as well. They create a special atmosphere in a finished work and thus achieve a certain emotional influence not only on the listener but also on the reader. This realizes the existence of the finest thread between the author and the auditorium, for which his rhyming work is forseen.

Opis:
The aim of the article is an attempt to present the genesis and describe the first compositions that formulated the Japanese ambient trend, i.e. kankyo ongaku. The subject of the research is both the history of the creation of the series by Hiroshi Yoshimura, Music for Nine Post Cards, which became the cornerstone of later albums from the ambient and minimal music trend in Japan, as well as individual works included in the cycle under study. Based on the results of the automated and auditory analysis of Music for Nine Post Cards, the structure of musical works and their stylistic features are determined. For automated analysis, Sonic Visualiser was used—an application used to create a graphical visualisation of the music content of audio files. As a result of the research, the answer was obtained as to how Hiroshi Yoshimura and Satoshi Ashikawa realised the original assumptions of kankyo ongaku.

Opis:
The article seeks to establish a foundational framework for comprehending crucial definitions and concepts related to auditory space in digital gaming, particularly focusing on audio games designed for visually impaired individuals (VI), often devoid of graphical interfaces. While existing studies often emphasize players’ interactions with interfaces and the acquisition of real-life skills, this text explores audio games through the lens of entertainment and immersion. Numerous studies indicate a demand among visually impaired players for more intricate and challenging games, incorporating elements usually used in standard digital gaming experiences. By combining definitions from both audio and traditional digital games, this article broadens the scope of sound design considerations, encompassing various aspects and classifications. It presents several auditory dimensions, consolidating them into a comprehensive dimension called attenuation, putting their roles within a game’s context. The author is a sound designer currently working on an audio game; therefore, many of the presented definitions are also a guide that will represent some of his own considerations while working on this game. These include not only the use of binaural or ambisonic sound but also understanding the ways and means of how to work with (3D) space in the context of audio and its possible functions.

Opis:
Zestawiając dyskursy współczesnych afektywnych teorii kina i jego warstwy dźwiękowej (m.in.
The author examines affective dimensions and performative agency of field recordings used in contemporary cinema. The narrative is centred around the works of Chris Watson, a specialist in the field of nature recordings, and a long-time collaborator of David Attenborough in his BBC productions. The essay juxtaposes contemporary affective theories of cinema and its soundtrack (i.a. Michel Chion, Barbara Flückiger, Caryl Flinn, Danijela Kulezic-Wilson) with discourses of field recording itself (Francisco López) and different tools of current humanities, to show how field recordings co-create cinema’s affective narrations, as well as affecting the viewer through the creation of the space of cinematic worlds. The author also analyses the functioning of field recordings within broader affective landscape of uncertainty in the age of climate disaster.

Opis:
The primary aim of this research study was to model acoustic conditions of the Courtyard of the Gdańsk University of Technology Main Building, and then to design a sound reinforcement system for this interior. First, results of measurements of the parameters of the acoustic field are presented. Then, the comparison between measured and predicted values using the ODEON program is shown. Collected data indicate a long reverberation time which results in poor speech intelligibility. Then, a thorough analysis is perform to improve the acoustic properties of the model of the interior investigated. On the basis of the improved acoustic model two options of a sound reinforcement system for this interior are proposed, and then analyzed. After applying sound absorbing material it was noted that the predicted speech intelligibility increased from bad/poor rating to good category.

Opis:
The main aim of the work described in this paper was to design and validate measures to reduce noise levels in a training center. This training center serves for the practical training of students with the focus in the shaping and machining engineering products. Reduction of noise in the training center was mainly due to the clarity and hearing of the spoken word between the lecturer and students, as well as to reduce the risk of hearing damage. In order to reduce noise levels, it was proposed to overlap the training center with a roof structure filled with sound absorbing material in two solutions. The noise absorption coefficient of the selected material was determined on the impedance tube. For verification of effectiveness, measurements of equivalent A sound levels were made before and after realization noise reduction measures. Reduction of equivalent A sound pressure levels after the noise reduction measures are between 15.5 dB and 17.5 dB depending on the measuring point and the operating mode. The effectiveness of the implemented measures reaches a good level, as noise was reduced to the recommended legislative level.

Opis:
The design of neonatal intensive care units (NICU) influences both patient safety and clinical outcomes as well as the acoustic conditions. In NICU exposure to sound pressure levels above the recommended can affect both neonates and healthcare staff. This study aimed to evaluate the sound pressure levels and to assess noise perception of professionals in a NICU before and after structural modifications and layout redesign. The measurements were performed with a sound level meter. A questionnaire was given to staff before and after the intervention. The opinion of healthcare staff regarding noise in NICU was better after the intervention, when compared with the responses previously given. The results showed that noise levels were excessive in the NICU (before and after), exceeding the international recommendations, with the levels ranging between 46.6 dBA to 57.8 dBA before and 52.0 dBA to 54.0 dBA after intervention. Overall, there is a need for more research in order to verify the effectiveness of some actions and strategies to reduce the impact of noise in NICU.

The iconicity of perceived content includes all associative aspects that are intuitively attributed to the stimuli. Sound thus communicates information on the nature of its source. Associative content is essential for the fit of specific sounds in the total background and in the whole multisensory environment. Psychoacoustic parameters of sound contribute to the overall perceptual appearance of auditory elements, but iconicity and semantic content are determining the meaning of sound, which is most important to the listener. An objective iconicity analysis is introduced for the assessment of multisensory aspects of an environment. It is configured for the intuitive selection of appropriate images from a large dataset. In contrast to the common procedure of image-based soundscape analysis, the pictures refer to perceived single aspects, features of materials touched, functional aspects of processes, and emotions. It has successfully been applied to visual and tactile stimuli. Its expected benefit for sound evaluations is discussed.

Opis:
During operation, construction machines generate high noise levels which can adversely affect the health and the job performance of operators. The noise control techniques currently applied to reduce the noise transmitted into the operator cab are all based on the decrease of the sound pressure level. Merely reducing this noise parameter may be suitable for the compliance with the legislative requirements but, unfortunately, it is not sufficient to improve the subjective human response to noise. The absolute necessity to guarantee comfortable and safe conditions for workers, requires a change of perspective and the identification of different noise control criteria able to combine the reduction of noise levels with that of psychophysical descriptors representing those noise attributes related to the subjective acoustical discomfort. This paper presents the results of a study concerning the “customization” of a methodology based on Sound Quality for the noise control of construction machines. The purpose is to define new hearing-related criteria for the noise control able to guarantee not only reduced noise levels at the operator position but also a reduced annoyance perception.
