Opis:
In the present work, fruits from two plant species, Rosa canina L. and Sorbus aucuparia L., popular in traditional folk medicine in Serbia, were studied. The aim was to examine and compare the efficiency of the ultrasonic extraction with different solvents regarding physicochemical properties, polyphenolic profile of extracts, as well as their tyrosinase inhibitory and antioxidant activity. The polyphenols evaluation indicated that water was the best solvent for a thorough extraction of bioactive compounds from the R. canina fruits, while propylene glycol-water (45:55, v/v) was the most efficient regarding S. aucuparia fruits, followed by ethanol-water (7:3, v/v). Only flavonoids were more abundant in S. aucuparia fruit extracts. R. canina water extracts showed a higher antioxidant activity, using several in vitro tests with different working principles. However, S. aucuparia ultrasonic extracts with propylene glycol-water (45:55, v/v) demonstrated a higher potential concerning tyrosinase inhibitory and chelating activity. Therefore, these ultrasonic extracts, being great sources of natural anti-tyrosinase inhibitors and antioxidants, can be considered as promising candidates suitable for pharmaceutical application, as great sources of natural anti-tyrosinase inhibitors and antioxidants.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badan nad morfologia ziarn pyłku czterech europejskich gatunków rodzaju Sorbus (S. arranensis Hedl., S. aucuparia L., S. hybrida L., S. mougeotti Soy.- Will. Ziarna S. aucuparia miały prążki krótsze i bardziej zagęszczone, z dobrze widocznymi perforacjami pomiędzy vallae.

Spatial distribution and genetic variation of a population of Sorbus chamaemespilus (L.) Crantz and putative hybrids between S. chamaemespilus, S. aria and S. aucuparia growing in the nature reserve Skalnä Alpa (central Slovakia) were studied. The analysis of spatial patterns using Ripley's K-function revealed a significant clustering of the adults of both S. chamaemespilus and hybrid taxa at distances up to ~15 m and a strong affinity between both taxonomical groups, indicating similar ecological requirements. Bivariate point-pattern analysis considering cardinal direction showed that juvenile individuals of S. chamaemespilus are clustered around the adults up to the distance of ~2 m, whereas in hybrid taxa with larger and more dense crowns, juveniles are clustered at distances more than ~3 m from the adults. The analysis of genetic variation in a subset of adult shrubs using 4 nuclear microsatellite loci revealed that unlike expected, there was no variation in S. chamaemespilus but several genotypes were found in the group of hybrid taxa. Implications for the reproduction system and conservation of the investigated taxa are discussed.

This paper presents the results of the study on pollen morphology of five Polish species of the genus Sorbus L. (S. aria (L.) Crantz, S. aucuparia L. Emend. Hedl., S. chamaemespilus (L.) Crantz, S. intermedia (Ehrh.) Pers. and S. torminalis (L.) Crantz). Observations were carried out with light and scanning microscopes. Investigated pollen grains were small or medium size, most often subprolate or prolate spheroidal in outline. Exine of medium thickness, consisted of two layers. Mainly 3-zonocolporate or sometimes 4-zonocolporate (S. chamaemespilus and S. torminalis) grains were noted. Usually striatae type of sculpture was observed, except the grains of S. intermedia, which were characterized by intermediate type of sculpture, with the features both striate and regulate ornamentation. Pollen morphology of the investigated Sorbus species corresponds with their systematic classification. It is relatively easy to separate pollen grains of the following subgenera: Sorbus, Chamaemespilus and Torminaria. Only subgenus Aria includes grains of different morphology and therefore it is impossible to determine the diagnostic features of this subgenus. Pollen morphology does not confirm a close relationship between S. aria and S. intermedia. It is possible to distinguished pollen grains of all the analysed native species. However, there are no important differences in pollen morphology between the subspecies of Sorbus aucuparia. The key for Polish Sorbus species, based on pollen grain characters is given too.

The structure of receptacular surfaces of floral nectaries at two flowering stages and the structure of the outer surface of the receptacle of Sorbus aucuparia were investigated using scanning electron microscopy. Changes in the development of the cuticular epithelium of the nectary epidermis and differences in the degree of aperture of stomata were observed. Increased undulation of the gland surface was found during flower development. Numerous stomata were situated slightly below the level of epidermal cells of the nectary. At the pollination stage, open pores or pores surrounded by the cuticular epithelium were observed, as well as covered by dried secretion. Dried nectar in the form of patches was also visible on the surface of the gland. Stomata of the outer surface of the receptacle were located on protrusions and surrounded by the cuticular epithelium.

Opis:
Complete discontinuation of agricultural use of subalpine meadows in the Western Bieszczady, which dates back to 1940s, started the process of their overgrowing with brushwood. Based on available cartographic material the following features were analysed: changes in the area occupied by brushwood on Mała Rawka and Wielka Rawka subalpine meadows, their growth rate and the relationship between the overgrowth process and the previous manner of agricultural use as well as topographic conditions throughout last 30 years. In that period the brushwood on Mała Rawka meadow (in the past the area had been reaped) was characterised by a small initial area (in the 1980s), a significant growth rate of the area and its relation to the slopes exposed to N, NE and E, the zone adjacent to the timber line and steeper slopes. In 1980 on Wielka Rawka meadow (previously used as a pasture) a high share of brushwood was found (about 25% of the meadow area), whose distribution was related only to the slopes of N, NE and E exposure. In subsequent years the growth rate was low. The results indicate a progressing process of overgrowing of subalpine meadows by brushwood. The brushwood expansion is related to discontinuation of agricultural use of the meadows and its course depends on the earlier regime of cultivation. The pattern of brushwood distribution also depends on altitude, exposure and the grade of slopes. Those relations result from the expansion of the rowan tree, dominating in the brushwood, also climatic conditions and accessibility of the ground.

The paper presents temporal relationships between the breakdown of tree stand in the subalpine spruce forest and the regeneration of rowan (Sorbus aucuparia L) as well as the rate of height growth of rowan stems. Rowans growing in a large gap recruited mostly from the seedling and sapling bank established under the living spruce stand before its breakdown. The rate of stem height growth was five times higher after the gap formation than under spruce stand. In spite of considerable age differences of rowans the variability in their final height after over 20 years of rapid growth was small.

Opis:
In 1970-2000, the state of the natural environment in many regions of Poland was unsatisfactory. This situation has been improving since the integration with the European Union, mainly owing to the reduction of emissions of sulphur and nitrogen oxides. The present study included three tree species: rowan (Sorbus aucuparia L. em. Hedl.), small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata Mill.), and aspen (Populus tremula L.). The trees grew in a pollution free environment (Huszlew) and in an urban agglomeration (Lublin). The aim of this research was to make comparative observations of the structure of leaves in relation to the content of lead, zinc, copper, nitrogen and sulphur determined in these organs. The N/S ratio in the leaves was accepted as an indicator of proper metabolic processes. Observations of leaves were made with using light microscopy and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique. The content of heavy metals in leaves was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) after dry mineralization. Total sulphur was determined by the turbidimetric method, while nitrogen by the Kjeldahl method after mineralization in sulphuric acid. When influenced by polluted air, the epidermis of the examined leaves was composed of smaller cells with higher stomatal density per unit area and had a lower number of open pores compared to the epidermis of the leaves developed in a clean environment. Among the species investigated, aspen was characterized by the highest ability to bioaccumulate heavy metals in its leaves. Among the elements determined only the Zn content exceeded the permissible limit, whereas Pb and Cu were found to occur in the range of values considered to be optimal. The dominant share of lead in suspended dust caused changes in the epidermis of leaves, which led to disorders in plant water relations.

Opis:
Effects of ungulate pressure on the development of young generation of trees is one of the most important issues in ecology and forestry. Ungulate pressure influence on the development of natural regeneration has been also reported from several national parks. Our study on the effects of ungulate browsing on the young generation of trees was conducted on more than 500 sample plots controlled during one growing season. The overall browsing pressure ranged from 7.6% in seedlings to 20.3% in low saplings. The pressure of ungulates on the regeneration of Picea abies, the dominant species in the Tatra National Park, was by and large below 1%. Broadleaved species were browsed more frequently. The relationship between the plot altitudes and browsing intensity was statistically significant for seedlings and low saplings; at the higher altitudes, the browsing pressure was greater. There was also observed a statistically significant relationship between the type of former management and the browsing degree in seedlings; in the areas subjected to “landscape protection”, the intensity of browsing was higher when compared to strictly protected areas. Pressure exerted by ungulates on tree regeneration was very unevenly distributed, i.e. some plots were heavily browsed and many others - not browsed at all. The most affected tree species were Salix caprea and Sorbus aucuparia, although the percentage of browsed individuals rarely exceeded 50%. Other species favored by ungulates was Acer pseudoplatanus; despite the high browsing pressure, this species was present among seedlings and tall saplings, suggesting that it would be able to recruit to the tree layer. Abies alba was browsed less frequently than the deciduous trees; however, among the tall saplings it was the third most browsed species.

The subject of this study were soil requirements of common woody shrubs, which may be part of the forest understory (Sorbus aucuparia L., Frangula alnus Mill., Corylus avellana L., Juniperus communis L., Padus avium Mill., Euonymus europaea L., Sambucus nigra L.). We focused on phytocenoses in the vicinity of natural forests in reserves and national parks of Polish lowlands and defined optimal types and subtypes of soil with trophic variations for each underwood species. The range of trophism for each species of shrub was determined using specific physicochemical properties of the soils, while soil quality was assessed using the Soil Site Index (SIG) (Bro¿ek et al. 2011). The ecological requirements of the before-mentioned underwood species were linked with forest typology as well as natural vegetation and they showed different soil requirements. Here we report significant differences in particle size and dynamics of organic matter decomposition in soils associated with these underwood species.

Opis:
Experimental data on carbon concentration in woody plant species biomass are very scarce and value of 50% of dry biomass is widely accepted in carbon storage modeling. On the other hand, some studies have proved that the carbon concentration in woody species biomass is variable and depends on the component. Thus, the main goal of the study was to determine carbon concentration in biomass of 7 understory shrub species (basing on 282 individuals): Corylus avellana, Prunus padus, P. serotina, Frangula alnus, Sambucus nigra, Cornus sanguinea and Sorbus aucuparia as well as to analyze variability of carbon concentration among shrub species and biomass components. Carbon concentration was analyzed for leaves, fruits, branches, stemwood, stembark, coarse and fine roots. Our study revealed that the mean carbon concentration in biomass of all species studied was 47.7%. We found statistically significant differences in carbon concentration among the shrub species studied in all biomass components. The mean value for particular species was as follows: Prunus serotina – 47.5%, P. padus – 47.6%, Frangula alnus – 47.7%, Sambucus nigra – 47.7%, Corylus avellana – 47.8%, Cornus sanguinea – 47.8% and Sorbus aucuparia – 47.8%. Additionally, we found statistically significant differences in carbon concentration among biomass components within the species studied. The mean carbon concentration in fruit biomass was 46.2%, in fine roots – 47.0%, in leaves – 47.2%, in coarse roots – 47.7%, in branches – 47.9%, in stemwood – 48.5% and in stembark – 48.6%. The variability of carbon concentration in fruit, branches and leaves biomass was higher than in the remaining biomass components. The variability of carbon concentration in biomass of woody species should be considered in carbon storage modeling in forest ecosystems.

Opis:
Managed forests are likely to be exposed to uncontrolled, spontaneous spread of alien/invasive species as a result of a frequently conscious introduction of alien species to forests in order to achieve economic gains. Unfortunately, we still lack data on the intensity of such invasions to forests on a larger scale. The aim of the paper is to provide a detailed qualitative and quantitative description of the existing regeneration of tree species, particularly the alien ones, and to determine the impact of selected factors on the regeneration of introduced species. The research was carried out in a mixed coniferous forest habitat in the "Uroczysko Główne". Particular focus was on the regeneration of alien species. Eight tree species were found to be regenerating naturally on the examined plots of which two were alien species. The scale of occurrence of alien species in comparison with native ones, particularly the black cherry, may now become a problem. Alien species accounted for nearly 25% of all tree species regeneration in the examined area and were noted in over half of the plots. It can therefore be said that the conditions occurring in the southern complex of the Niepołomice Forest have a great impact on tree regeneration and may favour spontaneous spread of alien species. The research helped to quantified and qualified the intensity of forest colonisation by the two most frequently occurring alien species.

Opis:
The aim of this research was to find out what changes occurred between 1999-2009 in Oszast reserve in the volume, species composition and diameter at breast height (dbh) distribution of the forest stand, and the number and height of regeneration. The objective was to determine what would be condition of these managed lower montane multispecies forest stands (Swiss irregular shelterwood method or selection cuttings) and what role spruce would play in them if they have not been replaced by spruce monocultures. The research was conducted on three permanent circular sample plots (s.p.), each had size of 1/3 ha. Over 10 years, standing volume of the forest stand increased on s.p. 1 (from around 562 m3 ha-1 to 649 m3 ha-1) and s.p. 3. (from 653 m3 ha-1 to 660 m3 ha-1), while decreased on s.p. 2. (from 421 m3 ha-1 to 378 m3 ha-1). The species composition, defined on the basis of volume share (averaged for the three s.p. jointly), did not undergo consistent changes. However, the relative dominance of beech over spruce was determined based on tree numbers. The average spruce mortality (averaged from three s.p.) did not exceed 10% and was slightly higher than that of beech (6%), and lower than fir mortality (15%). Nevertheless, spruce did not show any symptoms of dieback. The reasons behind its mortality were fallen trees and windbreaks. In regeneration, on the whole, beech or sycamore predominated, and the proportion of spruce and fir was small. In the future spruce and fir may even decrease further by competitive ability of dynamically regenerating beech. Abandonment of forest management to promote greater diversity of species, may favour the formation of beech monocultures, or forest stands dominated by beech, everywhere that beech is already present or will be introduced. The maintenance of stable, multispecies forest stands, with co-dominant fir, beech and spruce of native origin, requires natural or artificial regeneration of spruce and fir, manipulated to restore fir up to about 30%, and reduce spruce down to about 40%. This would be possible through the use of the Swiss irregular shelterwood method and selection system, and by continuous tending of regeneration.
