    In this paper, the author outlines the cultural and social context of Grechuta’s work, and answers the question: why research a song as a literary genre? Attention is drawn to the inequalities between certain concepts in the Polish language: song, poet, songwriter, singer and song lyrics, which is the main topic of interest in this article. The author analyzes Marek Grechuta’s book of poetry and a music album of the same title, Landscape of Hope. The author describes the role of music in the lyrics of the song. In the article, she uses a literary tool as well as elements from the theory of music and the analysis of a musical work – giving the research an interdisciplinary character. In the conclusion, she emphasizes that it is as worthwhile to focus on researching song in Poland as it is to research poetry.

    Rock is an important part of culture. Song studies, a subdiscipline of sound studies and an interesting context in contemporary humanities, have sought to enter the Polish discourse of cultural science for some time now. The anthropology of rock is a topic still in need of studying. Polish research in this respect is rather modest compared to other parts of the world, particularly the English speaking countries, where reflection on rock has been popular for many years. In Poland, its origins date back to 2009 when the first nationwide conference ‘Unisono na pomieszane języki’ [Language mix in unison], organised by Radosław Marcinkiewicz, took place in Tułowice near Opole. Eleven editions of the conference have been held so far – since the third session under the motto ‘Unisono w wielogłosie’ [Polyphony in unison]. Six volumes of the conference materials have been published (2010–2014, 2019). Their significance results not only from the fact that they are the first series of such studies in Poland but also that they have laid the foundations for Polish rock music studies. A few years earlier, in 2003, A po co nam rock? Między duszą a ciałem [What do we need rock for? Between soul and body], edited by Wojciech Burszta and Marcin Rychlewski, came out as the first multi-authored monograph on the topic. This shows that rock anthropology research is a relatively young discipline in Poland – not even 18 years old yet. In this issue we will focus on studies by Polish researchers. Ten years before the release of A po co nam rock?, Wojciech Siwak published his pioneering work, Estetyka rocka [The aesthetics of rock] (1993). The last decade (2009–2019) has seen a real flood of works on rock culture.

    The article looks at the history of Argentine tango in Poland using the tools of song studies and memory studies. The author makes reference to Marvin Carlson’s concept and treats tango as a memory machine; in her opinion, pre-war Polish tango allows to tell an important fragment of the history of Poland and Central Europe. Focusing on selected songs, she shows how their history (and the fates of their creators) is entangled in various cultural, social and political contexts. The author constructs the narrative by choosing one tango, Plegaria by the Argentinian musician Eduardo Bianco, which was chosen for his debut at the Qui Pro Quo theatre by the Dana Choir. According to a legend, this tango was to be the ‘tango of death’ from the Janowska concentration camp, the inspiration for Paul Celan’s Todesfuge (Death Fugue). Other Polish songs of the time are also recalled (e.g. the tango Wanda, alluding to the activities of the Zwi Migdal organisation, the foxtrot Gdy Petersburski razem z Goldem gra (When Petersburski and Gold play together), or the Polish version of La Cumparsita with lyrics by Andrzej Włast) and their composers (Jerzy Petersburski, the brothers Artur and Henryk Gold, Henryk Wars and Dawid Bajgelman), lyricists (Andrzej Włast and Emanuel Schlechter) and performers (Mieczysław Fogg, Adam Aston and Wiera Gran). Many tango artists in Poland had Jewish roots and perished during the war, which means that the genre itself became entangled here in the history of the Holocaust.

    In the article, the author tries to bring closer the popular culture problems present in linguistic works. Discussed research proves that the popularity of this issue gradually increases. The linguists apply different and various theories and methodologies in their research. They are interested both in Polish and foreign phenomena of popular culture. The authors of the linguistic research on popular culture place their analysis on a broad background of contemporary culture and society. One can hope that subsequent research provides us with more know ledge and better understanding of the present day.
    Przeprowadzona w artykule próba przybliżenia sposobów uobecniania kultury popularnej w refleksji lingwistów pozwala na sformułowanie wniosków o rosnącej popularności tej tematyki, a także różnorodności sposobów jej ujmowania. Badaczki i badacze sięgają po rozmaite propozycje teoretyczne oraz instrumentaria metodologiczne. Interesuje ich zarówno kultura rodzima, jak i obca. Starają się umieszczać badane fenomeny na tle tendencji wyznaczających mapę współczesności. Dzięki podobnym próbom można coraz więcej dowiadywać się o specyfice naszych czasów i być może lepiej je rozumieć.

    There are a few reasons why a song, in its broad sense, is not the main focus of the present study, but its variety – a particular attention is devoted to the genre of the so-called rock music. Firstly, in my opinion, this work of art currently seems to be the most interesting, resonating, as well as artistically and aesthetically valuable. Secondly, the qualitative and quantitative intensity of the genre is priceless. Thirdly and finally, the influence of this very sort of musical activity on the 20th century is commonly known not only through a powerful impact of various counterculture areas in which rock music found its own reason for existence, but mostly owing to being what it is – a performative artistic output in which different areas of art – music, lyrics, visuals and others – correspond with one another. Awarding the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016 to Bob Dylan has marked a significant moment in cultural history – the musician gained recognition among the honourable Academy and, by the same token, the song – Dylan’s most commonly used artistic medium has raised cultural awareness, reaching out to a wider public. But did it really have to reach out to listeners? Is it not true that a song has been a soundtrack to our lives being constantly present in them? Maybe the decision which the Academy has made was only a formality – lyrics are very important and it is only up to us what meaning we assign to them. This paper aims to interpret selected lyrics of Polish rock songs, considering them as a significant part of the history of the Polish literature.

    The paper focuses on the song as a syncretic, literary-musical genre. The appearance of song quotes in a novel (Cudzoziemka by Maria Kuncewiczowa) represents an interesting case, which may nevertheless be examined from purely literary perspective. However, a more profound interdisciplinary reading, which combines the elements of analysis of a piece of prose and a piece of music, enables a better interpretation of this particular motif in the novel.

    The linguo-cultural approach in the poly-paradigmatic scope of modern linguistics determines the appearance of scientific studies on multilevel language units as ethnomarked resources that express national culture and mentality in the folk literary texts, folklore, parables. In this aspect, Ukrainian folk songs stand out due to the high poeticism, expressiveness, imagery and lyricism created by syntactic constructions. This article, in particular, analyzes interrogative constructions as meaningful components of folk song discourse that affect mental spheres of the language personality and mark the national-linguistic worldview of the Ukrainian speaker. Drawing upon the research material the author defined communicative-intentional content of interrogative statements, characterized the models-realization of query intentions, which, as evidenced by the created source data, verbalize, on the one hand, multidirectional interrogative components (pronouns and adverbs) that embody explanatory intentions aimed at cognitive process-search, and on the other hand, interrogative particles that actualize emotional and evaluative semantics (doubts, assumptions, surprise, reproach, laughter, resentment, etc.) in the folk song discourse. By using the relevant linguistic methodology, it became possible to present the addresser-addressee continuum of song communication (mother – son, father – daughter, husband – wife, brother – sister, etc.), which emphasizes the important role of interrogative constructions in dialogic speech, in creating naturalness and dynamics of the song, as well as in the expression of primary and secondary interrogative functions. A detailed study of various genres of songs (Christmas carols, spring songs, bathing songs, baptismal songs, lullabies, family-household songs, social-household songs, etc.) enabled us to determine the functional potential of interrogative constructions aimed at expressiveness, emotionality and evaluation. It is also focused on the major and minor key of the song, highlighting deep sensuality and poeticism of man as a representative of Ukrainian culture and linguo-mentality.
    Лінгвокультурологічний підхід у поліпарадигмальному просторі сучасного мовознавства детермінує появу наукових студій, присвячених аналізові різнорівневих мовних одиниць як етномаркованих ресурсів, що виражають національну культуру та ментальність у текстах народної творчості, у фольклорі, пареміях. У цьому аспекті вирізняються українські народні пісні, високу поетичність, експресивність, образність та ліризм яких створюють синтаксичні конструкції. Зокрема у статті проаналізовано питальні конструкції як посутні компоненти народнопісенного дискурсу, що заторкують ментальні сфери мовної особистості й маркують національно-мовний світогляд мовця-українця. На багатому фактичному матеріалі визначено комунікативно-інтенційний зміст питальних висловлень, схарактеризовано моделі-реалізації інтенцій запиту, які, як засвідчує створена джерельна база, вербалізують, з одного боку, різноспрямовані питальні компоненти (займенники й прислівники), що вербалізують зʼясувальні інтенції, спрямовані на розвиток когнітивного процесу-пошуку, а з іншого боку, питальні частки, що актуалізують у народнопісенному дискурсі емоційно-оцінну семантику (сумнів, припущення, здивування, докір, сміх, образу тощо). З використанням релевантної лінгвометодології представлено адресантно-адресатний континуум пісенної комунікації (мати – син, батько – донька, чоловік – дружина, брат – сестра та ін.), що підкреслює важливу роль питальних конструкцій у реалізації діалогійності, у створенні природності й динамічності пісні, у вираженні первинних та вторинних функцій питальності. Докладне вивчення різножанрових пісень (колядок і щедрівок, веснянок, коломийок, пісень купальських, хрестинних, колискових, родинно-побутових, соціально-побутових та ін.) вможливило визначення функційного потенціалу питальних конструкцій, спрямованого на вираження експресивності, емоційності та оцінки, на увиразнення мажорної чи мінорної тональності пісні, на вияскравлення глибинної чуттєвості та поетичності людини як репрезентанта української культури та лінгвоментальності.

    На аснове архiўных матэрыялаў па беларускаму фальклору часоў Вялiкай Айчыннай вайны i пазнейшых разгледжаны арыгiнальны сюжэтна-тэматычны цыкл лiрычных песень пра сястру мiласэрнасцi, якi ўяўляе сабой пласт народнапесеннай традыцыi, раней практычна выключаны з даследчага поля. Устаноўлена, што вобраз сястры мiласэрнасцi, з’яўляючыся познетрадыцыйным, не знаходзiць рэлевантных аналогiй у класiчным фальклоры, яго ўзнiкненне дэтэрмiнавана сацыяльна-гiстарычнымi рэалiямi ХIХ–ХХ стст., сярод якiх вызначальную ролю адыграла дзейнасць суполак Чырвонага Крыжа. Да крызiсу Першай сусветнай вайны i рэвалюцыйных падзей у грамадскай свядомасцi i культурнай практыцы семантыку вобраза сястры мiласэрнасцi вызначалi маральныя iдэi хрысцiянскага служэння i дабрачыннасцi, на што паказваюць факты традыцыi салдацкай песнi. Пазней ён десакралiзуецца, межы яго семантыкi пашыраюцца, што пацвярджаецца прыкладамi гарадскога фальклору ХХ ст. У час Вялiкай Айчыннай вайны ў рэпертуары партызан i насельнiцтва Беларусi актуалiзавалася традыцыя салдацкай дарэвалюцыйнай песнi, якую рэпрэзэнтуе сюжэт з асноўным матывам «сястра мiласэрнасцi суцяшае салдата», што абумоўлена яго змястоўнымi i фармальна-стылявымi характарыстыкамi.
    W artykule omówiono tematyczny cykl pieśni lirycznych o siostrze miłosierdzia, który należy do tradycji narodowej, wcześniej praktycznie nieobecny w badaniach naukowych. Do analizy wykorzystano materiały archiwalne folkloru białoruskiego z czasów wielkiej wojny ojczyźnianej i późniejszych. Ustalono, że obraz siostry miłosierdzia nie znajduje analogii w folklorze klasycznym, a jego powstanie podyktowane było realiami socjalno-historycznymi w XIX i XX wieku, wśród których decydującą rolę odgrywała działalność Czerwonego Krzyża. Do kryzysu I wojny światowej i rewolucji w świadomości społecznej i praktyce kulturalnej semantykę obrazu siostry miłosierdzia determinowały chrześcijańskie ideały moralne, na co wskazuje tradycja pieśni żołnierskiej. Następnie obraz ten ulega desakralizacji, granice jego semantyki rozszerzają się, co potwierdzają przykłady z folkloru miejskiego w XX wieku. W czasie wielkiej wojny ojczyźnianej w repertuarze partyzantów i mieszkańców Białorusi tradycja żołnierskiej przedrewolucyjnej pieśni ulega aktualizacji. Reprezentują tę tradycję wątki z głównym motywem „siostra miłosierdzia pociesza żołnierza”, co jest uwarunkowane jego treścią i cechami formalno-stylistycznymi.
    Based on archival materials on Belarusian folklore of the Great Patriotic War and later periods, the article considers the original narrative-thematic lyric song series devoted to a sister of mercy. The series belongs to folk songs that were previously excluded from the research field. The article states that the character of the sister of mercy establishes itself in the late tradition, and there is no relevant analogy to it in classical folklore. The emergence of the character is determined by the 19th–20th century socio-historical realities, such as the work of the Red Cross communities. Prior to the crisis of World War I and revolutionary events, the semantics of the sister of mercy in public consciousness and cultural practice was defined by the moral ideas of Christian services and charity. This is reflected in the tradition of the soldier’s song. Subsequently, the character undergoes desacralization, the boundaries of its semantics evolve, which is confirmed by urban folklore of the 20th century. During the Great Patriotic War, the tradition of the soldier’s pre-revolutionary song, particularly the motive “sister of mercy comforts the soldier”, is increasingly acknowledged in the repertoire of partisans and broader population of Belarus. This is due to its substantive and formal-style characteristics.
