Opis:
This work concerns a new criterion for hot-tearing evaluation in castings. Algorithm describing the conduction of computer simulations of phenomena accompanying the casting formation, which performing is the preparation stage for using of this criterion, is also described. According to the low recurrence of phenomena occurring during solidification (e.g. grained structure parameters, stresses distribution) the casting’s hot-tearing inclination can be estimated only in approximated manner. Because of still following at present rapid computer processors development, and techniques of its programming, enables to suppose that in short time the efficiency of computer simulations will arise so much, the problem of hot-tearing evaluation newly became interesting for the team working on computer simulations at the Institute for Computer and Information Sciences at Częstochowa University of Technology.

Opis:
Vacoflux-49 (Fe-49% Co-49% V-2%) is used in torque, sonar and gyroscopic sensors applications due to excellent magnetic properties (high saturation magnetisation, low coercivity and high Curie temperature). In this study, the shape, size and characteristics of different thermal zones and the microstructural evolution during electron beam melting and welding of Vacoflux-49 material are studied. The experimental studies on melting have been carried out with under-focussed, focussed and over focussed electron beam. In the case of the under-focussed and over-focused beam, no evaporated zone is found. In the case of focussed beam, a shallow conical-shaped evaporated zone, a choked funnel-shaped fusion zone, a conical shaped partially melted zone and the heat-affected zone are observed. The solidified melt pool in terms of shape, size and microstructure of different zones are investigated for the focussed beam. The grains in the fusion zone appear wavy having crest and trough. The fusion zone microstructure also shows the formation of solidification rings. From the electron beam welding experiments performed for joining two Vacoflux-49 plates (continuous welding), it is found that the weldment shape is similar to the spot melting and re-solidification experiments. The grain growth in different zones in the welding sample is also examined.

Opis:
This paper presents a simulation of the casting solidification process performed on graphics processors compatible with nVidia CUDA architecture. Indispensable for the parallel implementation of a computer simulation of the solidification process, it was necessary to modify the numerical model. The new approach shown in this paper allows the process of matrix building to be divided into two independent phases. The first is independent from the nodal temperature values computed in successive time-steps. The second is performed on the basis of nodal temperature values, but does not require a description of the finite element mesh. This phase is performed in each time step of the simulation of the casting solidification process. The separation of these two phases permits an effective implementation of the simulation software of the casting solidification process on the nVidia CUDA architecture or any other multi-/manycore architecture. The use of GPUs nVidia for the implementation of a computer simulation of the solidification process significantly reduced the waiting time for results. In the course of computer simulations important speedup of the computations was observed.
