Opis:
The paper presents the results of research focused on the investigations of the possibilities to use biochar to improve the quality and productivity of soils. Biochar is a material similar to the commonly known charcoal obtained from the thermolysis process (a process similar to dry distillation of wood). The structure and technical properties of biochar depend on the type of biomass which is produced and the thermal decomposition process conditions: process time, temperature and atmosphere. It was found that a positive effect of biochar on the soil properties is manifested through the improvement of soil fertility, better water retention, improvement of the cation exchange, and the regulation of the pH. The biochar used in the present study was obtained by autothermal thermolysis of biomass at 300 °C. Three types of biochars of different origin were used. The biochar samples were subjected to ultimate and proximate analysis, as well as structural and porosimetric investigations. The experimental research were also conducted on the experimental test field and gave a positive effect of the presence of biochar on soil quality and plant yield. Biochar introduced into soil allows for long-term storage of carbon. The introduction of biochar to soil has a positive effect on plant growth, higher dose resulted in an increase in biochar and plant mass.

The aim of the research was to investigate the soil properties and the species diversity of diatoms growing in different agricultural fields with silt loamy soil. The field experiment was conducted in 2014 in Kosina, near Łańcut (SE Poland), at three sites (indicated as fields K1, K2, K3) with different soil environmental conditions and plants. The growth of winter wheat Triticum aestivum (cv. Bogatka) in fields K1 and K2 and oats Avena Sativa (cv. Haker) in field K3 under different soil management were studied. The soil samples were collected from the top layers (0–5 cm depth) each month, from April to December. Certain physical and chemical parameters of soil were measured. The pH of soil was acidic and slightly acidic in fields K1 (5.0–5.4), K2 (4.9–5.9) and K3 (4.5–5.1). The soil in field K3 had a significantly greater content of organic matter (1.06–1.30%) and water content (12.9–33.8%, v/v) than fields K1 and K2. A total of 91 diatom taxa were found. The diversity was greatest in field K2 (71 taxa), lower in K1 (54 taxa) and K3 (24 taxa). In K1, the most numerous species were Luticola D.G. Mann cf. mutica, Mayamaea atomus var. permitis (Hust.) Lange-Bertalot, and Stauroneis thermicola (Petersen) Lund, with more than a 20% share in the assemblage. In K2, very abundant assemblages were formed by Mayamaea atomus (Kütz.) Lange Bertalot, Mayamaea atomus var. permitis (Hust.) Lange-Bertalot, and Stauroneis thermicola (Petersen) Lund with a 25 to 50% share in the total diatom community. In K3, with oat cultivation, a different diatom species structure was found. Here, the most abundant were Halamphora montana (Krasske) Levkov, Hantzchia amphioxys (Ehrenb.) Grunow, Mayamaea atomus (Kütz.) Lange-Bertalot, and Nitzschia pusilla Grunow, which attained a share in the assemblage exceeding than 20%. The effects of different soil management regimes under different plants on the physical and chemical properties of the soil, and on the diversity of diatoms, were significant (P<0.05). Soil water and organic matter content affects the yield of winter wheat and oats. Significant effects of water content and pH of silt loamy soil on the growth and the diversity of species of diatoms were found.

Azotobacter spp. are soil bacteria capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen and making it available to plants. This makes them microorganisms of hight importance to the agriculture. The distribution of these bacteria is a complicated subject and is correlated with diverse factors, witch determine the presence or absence of the bacteria in a specific soil. The soil properties as soil and fertility and climate conditions affect the abundance of diazotrophs. Research material consisted of 182 soil samples taken in 2015 from agricultural land in various voivodeships. The number of Azotobacter spp. was determined based on plate method. The presented study evaluated the abundance of Azotobacter spp. in various Polish soils and confirmed the relationship between soil properties and the presence of these bacteria. The studied bacteria were present in 37% of soil samples and numbers of these bacteria varied widely, from 3 to 10801 cfu g-1 of the soil. In the case of Azotobacter spp., soil acidity was also an important factor restricting the occurrence of these bacteria in soils.

Opis:
Soil plays the most important role in the cycling of elements in the terrestrial environment. Contamination of soil with heavy metals have effect on all soil organism and plants. For this reason, studies have been carried out to assess the possibility of neutralising the effect of zinc (0, 150, 300, 600 and 1200 mg Zn kg,-1 of soil) on soil properties by applying neutralising substances (compost, bentonite and zeolite). Soil acidity and sorption properties depended on zinc contamination and on the type of neutralising substances added. In the series without an addition of neutralising substances, increasing zinc soil contamination resulted in a decrease in total exchangeable bases, in cation exchange capacity and in the saturation degree of the degree of base saturation, and an increase in soil hydrolytic acidity. An addition of bentonite to zinc-contaminated soil had the most advantageous effect of all the additions of neutralising substances on the tested soil properties. It resulted in an increase in soil pH, in total exchangeable bases, in cation exchange capacity, in the degree of base saturation and simultaneously decreased soil hydrolytic acidity compared to the series without additions. Adding zeolite and compost to soil had a small and usually insignificant effect on soil acidity and soil sorption properties.

The study was carried out to assess ecological risks at the closed landfill in Cai Dau town, Chau Phu district, An Giang province. Soil samples were collected at six locations (S1-S6) at depths of 0-20 cm and 60-80 cm in the rainy season (November 2020) and dry season (March 2021). The soil quality was evaluated using eight heavy metals (Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni, Pb, Cr and As). The results showed that most monitoring sites had heavy metal contents within the allowable limits for agricultural land of QCVN 03-MT:2015/BTNMT. Some heavy metals have been found to migrate to the soil layer of 60-80 cm. The heavy metals accumulation (Igeo) in the two soil layers did not differ; Ni, Cr, Pb and As accumulated at non-polluting levels - moderate to high in the rainy season, while Cr and As only accumulated in the dry season. The composite pollution index (PLI) indicated that the locations around the landfill were polluted; however, the ecological risk ranged from low to moderate (potential ecological risk index (PERI) = 102-195) in the rainy season. Only about 50% of study sites during the dry season were contaminated and the risk was low (PERI = 44-68). However, the area around the landfill always poses potential risks due to the presence of heavy metals, including Ni, Cr, As and Pb. Monitoring the heavy metals in the surrounding landfill for the potential risks to human health and environment is needed.

The aim of the study was to assess the effect of bottom sediments on the selected properties of light soil as well as the content of trace elements in tested plants. The bottom sediments collected from the Besko reservoir were added to the soil in an amount of 5%, 10%, 30% and 50% of air-dried sediment, in relation to dry soil mass. The pot experiment was conducted on a light soil, with weak loamy sand grain size composition and slightly acid reaction, which was enriched with a supplement of bottom sediment. The test plant was a maize, Bora c.v. An applied bottom deposit revealed in its composition a considerable content of clay fractions, alkaline reaction and low total heavy metal content. Therefore, it may be applied as an admixture to light soils to improve their productivity. The addition of sediment to light soil resulted in the improvement of acidification in soil indicators: increased soil pH and reduced value of hydrolytic acidity, as well as improved sorption properties. A non-uniform effect of bottom sediment admixture on the content of trace elements in maize was determined. The sediment added to the soil increased the content of copper, nickel, chromium and, decreased the contents of zinc and cadmium in shoots. We did not find any excess of the permissible content of metals in plants used as animals forage in the maize biomass.

Soil fertility evaluation has been considered as a most effective tool for sustainable planning of a particular region. This study was conducted to determine the soil fertility status of the Agricultural Research Station, Pakhribas, Dhankuta, Nepal. The total 60 soil samples were collected randomly at a depth of 0-20 cm by using the soil sampling auger. For identification of soil sampling points A GPS device was used. The collected samples were analyzed for their texture, pH, OM, N, P₂O₅, K₂O, Ca, Mg, S, B, Fe, Zn, Cu and Mn status following standard methods in the laboratory of Soil Science Division, Khumaltar. The Arc-GIS 10.1 software was used for soil fertility maps preparation. The observed data revealed that soil was dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) and yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) in colour, and single grained, granular and sub-angular blocky in structure. The sand, silt and clay content were 56.61±0.97%, 27.62±0.56% and 15.77±0.58%, respectively and categorized as loam, sandy loam and sandy clay loam in texture. The soil was very acidic in pH (4.66±0.07) and very low in available sulphur (0.53±0.11mg/kg), available boron (0.24±0.07mg/kg). The organic matter (1.34±0.07%), total nitrogen (0.09±0.003mg/kg), available calcium (605.70±31.40mg/kg), available magnesium (55.96±4.67mg/kg) and available zinc (0.54±0.22mg/kg) were low in status. Similarly, available potassium (115.98±9.19 mg/kg) and available copper (1.13±0.09 mg/kg) were medium in status. Furthermore, available manganese (36.31±2.82mg/kg) was high, whereas available phosphorus (105.07±9.89 mg/kg) and available iron (55.80±8.89 mg/kg) were very high in status. The soil fertility management practice should be adopted based on the determined status in the field for the sustainable production of crops. The future research strategy should be built based on the soil fertility status of the research farm.

Among organic amendments, FYM, MC, VC and BS increased DTPA-extractable Zn and Mn in soil significantly when compared with the control sample, while BC was significantly effective in regard to increasing both DTPA-extractable Mn and hot water soluble B when compared with the control sample. Application of FYM and MC significantly increased DTPA-extractable Cu and Fe, respectively when compared with the control sample. Simple correlation and path coefficient analysis were performed to identify key chemical fractions of micronutrients in soil having the direct and indirect effects on availability of micronutrients in organically amended soils. Based on soil extractable concentrations of micronutrients in organically amended soils, FYM appeared to be the best source of Zn, Cu and Mn, while MC could serve as the best source of Fe. Biochar from Lantana sp. may serve as a good source of B.

This study was carried out to show the extent to which the land is productive due to the effect that climatic changes and the increase in population growth are the reasons that led to an increase in the demand for food, especially in developing countries. Therefore, a scientific way must assess the land suitability for growing crops. This research aimed to provide an integrated approach to the process of analyzing the suitability of agricultural lands for crop growth. Wheat in the Nile region of Babylon Governorate, was studied using the analytical hierarchy model (AHP) and compared with the parametric method and the actual crop in the field, as twelve soil criteria were determined (electrical conductivity, soil interaction, cation exchange capacity, exchangeable sodium ratio, soil texture, lime, gypsum, organic carbon, drainage, soil depth, slope, flooding) and three criteria were added in the AHP method due to their importance in Iraqi soils, which are (total nitrogen, availability phosphorus, crop variety). The results were extracted and showed that all the results of the study using the parametric method within the very unsuitable class for cultivation, N2, 72.5%, with an area of 37,734.07 hectares, and the unsuitable class, N1, 27.5%, with an area of 14,312.92 hectares, either by using the method. According to the analytical hierarchy process and giving varying importance to the soil criteria above, it was found that 37.5% are very suitable S1 with an area of 19517.62 hectares, 42.5% suitable for agriculture S2 with an area of 22119.97 hectares, and 20% moderately suitable S3 with an area of 10409.4 hectares. These results were similar to the agricultural reality of the regions under study.

Dryland farming, managed intensively, with the input of chemical fertilizers exceeding the dose threshold, can cause soil degradation. Degraded soil affects low environmental carrying capacity and soil and water conservation. Researchers conduct soil tests on agricultural land to address this issue, especially those that apply a continuous cropping system. This study aimed to examine soil properties to determine the conditions of soil degradation in dryland farming. The method integrates spatial analysis with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), field surveys, and laboratory soil samples analysis. The spatial data used to map the potential for soil degradation includes land use, slope, rainfall, and soil type. Integrating spatial and laboratory data, such as soil physical, chemical, and biological properties results in soil degradation status conditions representing the actual conditions in the field. This study found that there were three classes of soil degradation successively, namely mild, moderate, and high. There are two statuses of soil degradation, including non-degraded and light soil degradation status. The soils with a mild degree of degradation are due to the limiting factors of permeability, fractional composition, and total porosity. Some actions that can be taken include planning soil degradation prevention measures by utilizing soil degradation potential maps that have been made for areas with high soil degradation potential. For the sites with a status of soil degradation, efforts are made to start carrying out soil improvement actions in accordance with conservation principles to reduce the soil degradation that occurs. Moreover, organic matter is added to degraded and potentially degraded soils to increase the stability of soil aggregates and water-carrying capacity.

This article concerns the assessment of selected physical and mechanical properties of a dump soil. The dump soil is a specific soil with a very heterogeneous internal structure. Next to each other, there may be lumps and crumbs of cohesive soils mixed with non-cohesive soils accompanied by a very diverse admixture of organic substance. In addition, the soil in the waste dump, in spatial terms, may significantly differ in consistency and density. This is the result of the process of forming a dump soil, which takes place in three stages: excavation, transport and dumping. A heterogeneous soil deposited within the waste dump is subject to further processes: consolidation, compaction and creeping. Changes occurring in the course of these processes have a significant impact on the development of the properties of the dump soil. Due to the large diversity of the tested soils, the results of their properties were divided into two groups, based on type and consistency of soil. This allows us to estimate the selected properties of the dump soil only on the basis of their macroscopic analysis.

Opis:
Soils of the tropics are generally acidic mainly due to the high and intensive rainfall that causes excessive loss of the basic cations. High soil acidity is often a limiting factor for plant growth. Liming is the most widely used method to neutralize acidity and improve crop performance. A field trial was conducted at two locations in the University of Calabar Teaching and Research Farm, Calabar, to determine the effects of local liming materials on soil properties and yield of waterleaf. Seven treatments consisting of wood ash (WA), oil palm bunch ash (OPBA), cocoa pod ash (COPA), periwinkle shell ash (PSA), cassava peels ash (CAPA), and carbide waste (CW), each applied at 8 t /ha, and a control (no lime applied) were laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The result showed increase in soil pH from 4.5 before experiment to 5.93 in the plot treated with wood ash. Over all, soil organic carbon, available phosphorus, basic nutrients (Ca, Mg, K, Na) and base saturation were significantly (P < 0.05) increased in plots treated with lime materials. Plant height, number of leaves, number of branches, stem girth, leaf area, fresh and dry matter yield of waterleaf were all significantly increased. However, the highest mean fresh yield of 4.61 t/ha obtained from the WA treated plot was not significantly (P > 0.05) higher than the yield of 4.36 t/ha obtained from OPBA treated plots, but was higher significantly than other treatments. The fresh yield increase was 61, 58, 46, 45, 39 and 35%, while the dry matter yield percentage increase was 63, 56, 53, 50, 42 and 22 for WA, OPBA, COPA, PSA, CAPA and CW. Therefore, for amelioration of soil acidity and better crop performance in the acid Ultisol of Southeast Nigeria, application of either wood ash or oil palm bunch ash is recommended.

Opis:
Bacteria belonging to the genus Azotobacter are microorganisms commonly found in various soils all over the world and capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen. The biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) process annually supplies approximately140–170 million tons of this element to the nitrogen cycle, which is of great importance from an ecological and practical point of view. Although the efficiency of atmospheric nitrogen fixation by Azotobacter spp. is relatively high and amounts to 20 mg N per1 g of glucose used, these bacteria are sensitive to various environmental factors, including soil reaction, contents of organic matter, soil humidity or nutrient content, and their abundance in soils is small. These bacteria secrete numerous biologically active substances into the soil environment, which have a beneficial effect on the development of plants, which from the ecological point of view plays an important role in the functioning of agricultural ecosystems. An additional advantage of bacteria belonging to the genus Azotobacter, which speaks for their use in agriculture, is the ability to produce antifungal and solubilization of insoluble phosphates. Research on Azotobacter spp. proves that the concentration of hydrogen ions (pH) is a significant factor which determines the presence of this group of bacteria in the soil environment. Many other soil properties have a large impact on the presence and development of this important agricultural group of bacteria. The aim of the work was to systematize the knowledge on the known occurrence conditions and ecological relationships and interactions between environmental factors and the presence and abundance of Azotobacter bacteria in soils.

Opis:
Tillage is one of the most important practices that have a significant influence on the soil hydro-physical properties. In this study, the impact of the type and number of input variables with five different methods of the Retc model to predicting the moisture retention curve and soil water content in three surfaces tillage NT (No-tillage), CP (Chisel Plough) and MP (Moldboard Plough) and the impact of tillage systems on soil hydro-physical properties were evaluated. According to results, when the field capacity and wilting point moisture was added to input data in Retc to predict the moisture curve model parameters, the EF was increased in MP (0.977, 0.95) and CP (0.891, 0.86) treatments compare the NT (0.665, 0.608). The Mualem–Van Genuchten model can describe satisfactorily the simulation of soil physical properties. The S-index, which was also affected by tillage, was greater than 0.066 in all tillage treatments, indicating good soil physical quality. Results indicated that NT had the highest and lowest values of bulk density (1.55 Mgr.m⁻³) and total available water (TAW) (0.038 m.m⁻¹), respectively, and the differences between NT and MP in total porosity was significant. Overall, in most soil layers, tillage practices affected the porosity and total available water in the order MP > CP > NT. Water retention curves indicated that the water retention capacity was greater in tilled than in no-tilled and saturated hydraulic conductivity values were greater in tilled treatments than in NT soil.

Opis:
Field trial was carried out during the consecutive years 2001-2006 on a lessive soil (Albie Luvisols). The objective was to evaluate the influence of sewage sludge applied at different yearly rates, simultaneously with mineral fertilization, on soil properties, mainly organic carbon and total nitrogen content as well as changes in pH and the level of available phosphorus at the humus layer and the subsoil. Investigations were carried out on two three-years rotation: potatoes - spring barley - winter rye, Sewage sludge was applied at the rates (on dry matter basis) 2.0 Mg o ha-1 yearly, 4.0 Mg o ha-1, each two years, 8.0 Mg o ha-1 each three years. This corresponded to the legally regulated amounts, ie, 10 Mg o ha-1 for a five-year period. Moreover sludge was applied at the rates 4 and 8 Mg o ha-1 dry matter, yearly. The control treatment consisted of mineral fertilization, only. It was found, that the application of sewage sludge, irrespective of the rate and the frequency did not exert (in most cases) a significant influence on investigated soil indices. This concerned at whole soil pH, organic carbon and total nitrogen content as well as partly the available phosphorus level. In the case of phosphorus, its amounts decreased during the first three years of investigations, whereas in the second cycle of the rotation, P levels raised extremely at the highest sludge rate. Taking into consideration the biogenic effect of phosphorus as in the case of its accumulation in soils under conditions of long-term sludge application, therefore phosphorus balance at the field level may be a targeted task, particularly for soil rich or very rich in phosphorus.
Odpowiadało to ilościom normowanym prawem, tzn. W pierwszych trzech latach badań stwierdzono spadek zawartości fosforu, a w drugim cyklu zmianowania systematyczny wzrost, największy przy ekstremalnej dawce osadu.

Landslides determine increases and decreases in specific soil compounds which is affecting soil fertility. The recovery of soil fertility is a long process and may be used as an indicator of the landslide age and can contribute to the management plan of the affected area. In order to add to data about soil properties affected by landslides, the current study focuses on a young and shallow landslide from the western part of the Transylvanian Depression. Soil samples were analysed from a physico-chemical point of view (pH, organic matter - OM, total organic carbon - TOC, major cations, and iron content) in two places, at between 0 and 60 cm depth (inside and outside the landslide). The results obtained showed lower values of pH inside the landslide, low values of TOC and rock fragments in both places studied (inside and outside the landslide) and no differences in soil texture between disturbed and undisturbed soil. The ammonium, magnesium and calcium content was higher outside the landslide, the sodium level was slightly higher outside the landslide, while the potassium concentration was higher inside the landslide. This study offers new data regarding recovery of soil fertility and highlights the importance of gaining knowledge on soil properties of relevance to future measures to increase the fertility of agricultural soils.

The result of geomechanical and hydrological degradation caused by the underground extraction of hard coal are the transformations of the environmentally managed terrains and high variability of soil properties occurring in these areas. The analysis of selected soil properties of spatial variability in the post-mining area conducted by means of the kriging technique was presented in the paper. The determined points of empirical semivariogram were described by means of mathematical functions and theoretical semivariograms were plotted. The conducted analysis allowed to plot the maps of variability isolines, which my provide a basis to delineate the boundaries of areas most susceptible to the hydrological degradation of soils. The obtained research results indicate that the applied kriging technique may prove to be a useful tool for determining spatial variability of soils in the areas of hard coal mining operations and allow to delineate the boundaries of the areas most susceptible to soil degradation.

The paper presents simple machine learning models used for prediction of some soil properties based on the NIR spectral response. Data on mineral soils from Poland were taken from the LUCAS dataset. Machine learning model was used that is included in the category of so-called multilayer perceptron (MLP). The MLP model input was a vector of combined, transformed inputs made by means of the PLSR (partial last squares regression) algorithm (45 inputs in total). The output was a vector of properties, reduced to 9 components due to poor modelling effects of the P and K components. The estimation errors for texture, soil organic carbon (SOC) and carbonates can be considered acceptable from the point of view of their suitability in the development of cartographic documentation. It can be supposed that further regionalization will improve these results.

Using the Land Use and Coverage Frame Survey (LUCAS) database of European soil surface layer properties, statistical and machine learning predictive models for several key soil characteristics (clay content, pH in CaCl2 , concentration of organic carbon, calcium carbonates and nitrogen and exchange cations capacity) were compared on the basis of processing their spectral responses in the visible (Vis) and near infrared (NIR) parts. Standard methods of relationship modeling were used: stepwise regression, partial least squares regression and linear regression with input data obtained from principal components analysis. Using the inputs extracted by statistical algorithms various machine learning algorithms were used in the modeling. The usefulness of the models was analyzed by comparison with the values of the determination coefficients, the root mean square error and the distribution of residual values. The mean square error of estimation in the cross validation procedure for the stack mod el using the multilayer perceptron and the distributed random forest were as follows: for clay content – ca. 4.5%; for pH – ca. 0.35; for SOC – ca. 7.5 g/kg (0.75% by weight); for CaCO3 content – ca. 19 g/kg; for N content – ca. 0.50 g/kg; and for CEC – ca. 3.5 cmol(+)/kg.

Przeprowadzono badania określające wzajemne oddziaływanie różnych układów jezdnych na glebach różnego typu i o różnej strukturze. Metodyka badań obejmowała wyznaczenie zależności określających prawidłowości rozkładu ciśnień w kontakcie "układ napędowy-gleba", głębokości kolein h, ugniecenie gleby w koleinie ρ 0, rozkład ugniecenia gleby na różnej głębokości ρ x i głębokość ugniecionej warstwy gleby xh. Analiza wyników badań pozwoliła na wskazanie najlepszego typu układu jezdnego dla konkretnej gleby i opracowanie zaleceń pomocnych przy zestawianiu agregatów ciągnikowych, które mniej ugniatają glebę.
Agroecolgical strategy for choosing traction systems for mobile agricultural machinery understands creation of a flexible system consisting of design, technological and operational units which allow to adapt a tractor/implement system to varying operation requirements and to provide ecologically sound contact with soil. With the above considerations in view, the process of interaction of different running systems with soils of different type was explored. The procedure included definition of (a) pressure distribution pattern in "propulsive device-soil" contact area σ , (b) track depth value h, (c) track soil densities ρ 0, soil density distribution at a certain depth ρ x, (d) height of compacted layer xh. Then the results were analyzed and an efficient propulsive device for particular soil type was chosen. Research substantiated the recommendations for forming tractor/implement systems with the reduced soil compaction effect. To lower compaction impact of tilling tractor/ implement systems it is expedient to employ caterpillars or multi-axis wheels. When using tractors with narrow caterpillar tracks, the stress concentrates in the topsoil. Therefore when forming tilling tractor/implement systems, caterpillar tractors and traction devices with multi-axis wheel system should be preferred as contrasted to twin-wheel tractors. When forming sowing tractor/ implement systems, it should be taken into account that after presowing cultivation the soil has a high energy absorption, or high distributive, ability (it has major values of stress distribution coefficient). In this case the vertical load is assumed primarily by the topsoil. The basic task for the running systems of sowing tractor/implement systems is to reduce pressure on soil. Besides, test-proved considerable increase in track depth and soil densities at repeated wheel passes should be also taken into consideration. Therefore, in this case, with the aim of soil pressure reduction it is recommended to augment the size of wheels, instead of having more wheels following each other along the same track. Thus dual tires or big-sized tires, especially with high elasticity, are recommended for tractors and seeders when creating sowing tractor/implement systems.

The aim of this study was to analyze how variations in time and frequency of soil irrigation with municipal sewage affect some physical, physicochemical and chemical properties of the irrigated soil, including quantitative and qualitative changes of humic substances. Soils from irrigation fields of a large city agglomeration were selected for this study. Results showed increased concentration of organic matter and nutrients in irrigated soils. The accumulation of lipid substances and humic acids were observed in most frequently irrigated soils. It was found that frequent irrigation of light soils with municipal sewage might lead to environmental degradation.

The paper presents floral and soil diversity of selected soils of ecological grasslands in the Bystra Notec Valley. The state of vegetation cover was described on the basis of floral composition and such soil properties as the: content of organic matter, specific density, soil density, total porosity, maximal hygroscopic capacity, soil potential of water bonds, total and readily available water and reaction were analysed. The analysed soils showed high diversity in the scope of the examined properties. They resulted mostly from the content and state of transformation of organic matter. Meadow grasslands were diversified in terms of flora and natural qualities. They were dominated by species characteristic to Phragmitetea class. The highest floral diversity was observed on grasslands from Phalaridetum arundinaceae group H’=3,1of medium natural qualities. It depended mostly on current habitat and agricultural use.

Scharakteryzowano stan pokrywy roślinnej na podstawie składu florystycznego oraz przeanalizowano takie właściwości gleb, jak: zawartość materii organicznej, gęstość fazy stałej, gęstość gleby, porowatość całkowita, maksymalna pojemność higroskopowa, potencjały wiązania wody przez glebę, potencjalna i efektywna retencja użyteczna oraz odczyn. Analizowane gleby wykazywały silne zróżnicowanie w obrębie badanych właściwości. Wynikały one głównie z zawartości i stopnia przeobrażenia materii organicznej.

Thinning of young forests attracts the attention of scientists despite the long-term commercial effect. However, these researches are scarce. Therefore, it is important to study experiments with a long history. The aim of our study is to investigate the impact of thinning carried out in young pine/birch boreal forests on stand formation, natural regeneration, ground cover and properties of the soil layers in stands. We investigated three types of thinning in young pine/birch forests. In one plot of the initial stand, thinning was performed in two stages with a time interval of 27 years; in the first stage, thinning intensity was 75% of stems, while in the second stage, thinning intensity was 30%. In two other plots, thinning was performed in one stage at a stand age of 13 years, with thinning intensities of 76 and 84%. At the stand age of 72 years (2017), integrated studies of the silvicultural and ecological states were carried out. All thinned plots had developed into pure pine stands with 28–53% thicker stems, 12–18% higher trees and a growing stock 55–92% higher compared to the un-thinned reference stand. The most pronounced differences were observed for Option 1. With thinning, forest type changed to red whortleberry type, while the un-thinned reference site developed into a blueberry type forest. Thinning in young pine/birch stands results in the formation of pure pine stands. The associated modification of environmental properties changed the composition and density of the ground cover and some properties of the upper soil layers. Two-stage thinning had the least impacts; this approach can be used to produce stands with high commercial value. It is especially recommended for young pine/birch forests in the northern taiga.
