Opis:
Oil pollution is a hazard both in terms of scale and toxicity. Oil and oil products cause poisoning, death of organisms and soil degradation. The natural self-purification of natural objects from pollution depends on the natural conditions of the region, the presence of moisture, heat and the activity of the vital activity of the soil biocenosis. Under the conditions of Siberia, where a low temperature regime is maintained for a long time, self-purification is a long process. As a result of the long industrial use of the Medvezhye oil and gas condensate field, the soils of this area have accumulated pollutants. Thus, it is required to assess the toxicity of the soil, as well as to provide the ways and methods to prevent its environmental pollution. One of the ways to restore disturbed landscapes is technical and biological reclamation, the features and results of which are considered in this study using the Medvezhye deposit sand pit as an example.

Opis:
One of the most important problems in the process of underground natural gas storage is ensuring a safe operation of storage facilities. World practice shows that the underground storage of hydrocarbons in salt caverns is one of the safest methods and, at the same time, it is the cheapest one. The current technologies used in the construction of pure hydrogen, natural gas, and liquid hydrocarbon storage facilities guarantee long-term tightness of the facilities. However, it is not possible to exclude, with 100% certainty, the occurrence of the circumstances that may lead to even slight leaks in underground storage facilities during their operation followed by the migration of stored gases to the geosphere. Periodic geochemical tests are intended to signal early anomalies indicating the possibility of failure. They are followed by taking action to explain failure causes and eliminating threats.

Due to the safety of works, both the applicable regulations and standards as well as engineering experience described in the literature show the benefits of monitoring and observation of the behavior of the subsoil. It is especially important when weak subsoil is identified in the deeper layers and the load is variable during the execution of works. This article describes the method of monitoring subsidence and horizontal displacements of the overload embankment located in the vicinity of the high-pressure gas pipeline, during the construction of the expressway. The elements of the geomonitoring system, the method of its assembly, as well as advantages and limitations are described.

A determination of soil corrosivity on three sections of a main gas pipeline in the Western region of Ukraine has been carried out. We have distinguished areas of development of biocorrosive processes with the participation of sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB). Soil evaluation by the degree of corrosivity has been conducted. We used weight, titrimetric, gravimetric methods, pH-metry, ten-fold limit dilution method and Postgate nutrient medium B for culturing SRB. It has been established that the soil in the first area selected along the lower generatrix of the main gas pipeline has a high degree of corrosivity. It was ascertained that corrosive metal damage increases in the “ferrozone” with the growth of metal exposition time from 24 to 72 hours. The soil selected in the middle part and from above the pipeline refers to soils with a normal degree of corrosive activity. Innovative biostable insulating coatings based on bituminous-polymerous mastic MBPID-1 have been developed, modified with organic inhibitors from the class of quaternary ammonium salts and amines. Regularities of influence of nature of nitrogen-containing corrosion inhibitors of industrial production M, N, L, H and K on the corrosion rate of 17G1S steel for 180 days have been established. It was found that the corrosion rate of steel specimens remained unchanged throughout the study in variants with the presence of inhibitors H and K in the test systems, which indicated their bioresistance to the effect of SRB bacteria.

Opis:
The new radiation protection law in Germany, which came into effect 2018, puts greater emphasis on the protection against naturally occurring radiation, especially radon as a known health hazard. The law requires the delineation of radon priority areas, where prevention and remediation of high indoor radon concentrations should be taken with priority. In Germany, radiation protection is the administrative responsibility of the federal states. The state of Hesse has early on decided to fully survey the state for radon priority areas. To identify radon priority areas, the geogenic radon potential has to be determined. To achieve that radon, soil-gas measurements combined with soil permeability are a necessity. The University of Applied Sciences (THM) in Giessen is responsible for the radon soil-gas measurement campaign in Hessen. To achieve a statistically sound survey of the state of Hessen with an achievable amount of different measurement locations, and in the given time-frame, a geology-based concept has been designed. Taking into account the known geological information about geological structures in combination with the administrative counties, a survey strategy has been established. Prior known information regarding soil thickness, moisture, digability, and other technical limitations are used to determine the exact measuring locations. At every location, the radon activity in soil gas is measured. The soil permeability is determined for every measurement as well. Three measurements are performed at each location. Having completed the first set of measurements, the design criteria of the campaign and the practical experiences will be presented.

W artykule opisano proces opracowania metodyki jakościowego i ilościowego oznaczania węglowodorów monoaromatycznych, do których należą benzen, toluen, etylobenzen i izomery ksylenu (BTEX), w próbkach gleby. Optymalizacja metodyki polegała na wykonaniu szeregu analiz wzorcowych i rzeczywistych próbek gleb skażonych jednopierścieniowymi węglowodorami aromatycznymi. Do oznaczania węglowodorów z grupy BTEX zastosowano metodę chromatografii gazowej z ekstrakcją do fazy nadpowierzchniowej, która pozwala w szybki i prosty sposób uzyskać informację o zawartości BTEX w próbkach środowiskowych, z pominięciem długotrwałego etapu przygotowania próbki.
The article describes the process of developing qualitative and quantitative methods for the determination of monoaromatic hydrocarbons such as: benzene, toluene, ethylobenzene and xylene isomers (BTEX) in soil samples. Optimalization of the methodology consisted in carrying out a series of measurements for standard and real samples of soils, contaminated with monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. For the determination of BTEX hydrocarbons, a gas chromatographic method with extraction to the superficial phase was used, which allows to quickly and easily obtain the BTEX content of the environmental samples bypassing the long sample preparation stage. The developed methodology was tested on real soil samples taken from waste pits containing old drill waste contaminated with petroleum substances. The methodology was also used in the control of the process of bioremediation of petroleum substances in the soil (ex situ method).

Opis:
The menace of gas flaring in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria has continued unabated despite incessant promises by the Federal Government to put an end to it. In this study, a spatial analysis of the accumulation of heavy metals in leaves of Mangifera indica and Penthaclethra macrophylla and the soils on which they are growing was carried out. Three sites – 1, 2 & 3, were selected based on the availability M. indica and P. macrophylla at 100 m, 250 m and 350 m distances respectively, from the gas flaring source. Three individual trees were randomly selected from each of M. indica and P. macrophylla for soil and leaf sampling at each site. The collected soil and leaf samples were analysed for Zinc (Zn), Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Chromium (Cr), Nickel (Ni) and Copper (Cu), using standard methods. There was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in the concentrations of the heavy metals in soils around the roots of M. indica at the 3 sites except for Cd. Copper (Cu), Zn and Cr varied significantly (p < 0.05) in soils around the roots of P. macrophylla at the sites. Cadmium and Ni were almost absent in soils and leaves of both species at the sites. There was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in the concentrations of heavy metals in soils around the roots of M. indica and P. macrophylla at each site except in Site 1 where Cu, Zn and Cr, and Site 3 where Cr, varied significantly between the two species. Copper (Cu), Zn, Cr and Pb in leaves of both M. indica and P. macrophylla varied significantly (p < 0.05) among the sites. Concentrations of the heavy metals in leaves of both species at each site did not vary significantly (p > 0.05) except for Cr in Site 2. The concentrations of the heavy metals in both soil and leaves of the two tree species were within the permissible limits except for Chromium.

Opis:
The paper presents results of studies of gas concentrations in soil air of the vadose zone (O2, CO2, CH4, H2S, NH3) in natural (alder swamp and dune) and agriculturally modified (plough fields, permanent grassland) environments. Basing on the results of the field measurements dependence of gas exchange between aeration zone and atmosphere can be observed. Limited gas exchange between atmosphere and aeration zone results in increase of CO2 concentration and decrease of O2 content. The processes that regulate the concentrations of CO2 and O2 are: [1] variations of the temperature of the atmosphere and soil, [2] variations of soil moisture, [3] variations of atmospheric pressure. The oxygen concentration in the vadose zone decreases with increasing depth, while the CO2 concentration increases. Analysis of the distribution of gases in the vadose zone against the mean daily temperature shows that the O2 concentration was lower during cooler periods than during warm periods. An increase of soil moisture (e.g., resulting from the precipitation infiltration) is related to the O2 concentration decrease and CO2 concentration increase resulting from unfavourable conditions of gas exchange between soil and the atmosphere.

The oil accumulations discovered in the Skole Synclinorium (eastern part of Polish Outer Carpathians) are located in zones of pinch-out of the Kliva Sandstone. An example is the Wańkowa Oil Field, which contains the largest oil reserves in the region. As the seismic identification of this type of hydrocarbon trap is ambiguous, a surface geochemical survey was carried out in the vicinity of the Wańkowa Oil Field along an experimental line perpendicular to the fold axes. A traverse across the zones with anomalous seismic records indicated the presence of undiscovered lithological traps. During the surface geochemical survey, 94 samples of soil gas were collected from a depth of 1.2 m and then investigated chromatographically. The spacing of sampling sites was 100 m, which was reduced to 50 m in the Wańkowa Oil Field area. The maximum concentrations of CH4 and total alkanes C2-C5 detected in samples were: 4250.0 ppm (0.425 vol. %) and 0.43 ppm, respectively. The first of these was detected at measurement point no. 86, located over the Wańkowa Field and the second at point no. 59, about 1,300 m south of the Wańkowa Field. The chemical analyses also detected maximum values of total alkenes C2-C4, H2 and CO2: 0.147 ppm, 0.042 vol. % and 4.4 vol. %, respectively. The results of the surface geochemical survey were integrated with observations on subsurface geological structures, which were interpreted on the basis of seismic data. This procedure permitted the documentation of anomalous concentrations of alkanes in the near-surface zone and contributed to an understanding of the tectonics of the hydrocarbon reservoirs in depth. The pattern of geochemical anomalies here is controlled by anticlines made up of Early Oligocene–Paleocene sediments and by overthrusts that displace these structures. The hydrocarbons migrated from condensate and/or oil accumulations located at various depths. The character of the anomalous zone discovered over the Wańkowa Oil Field is related to the effective sealing of hydrocarbon traps and/or the relatively low pressure caused by the production of oil for 130 years. However, this anomaly also may be the result of hydrocarbon migration from deeper, as yet undiscovered gas or gas-condensate accumulations, hosted in older reservoirs forming the hinge of the Ropienka-Łodyna Mine Anticline. The most pronounced anomalies were detected over the Wańkowa Village - Bandrów and Grabownica-Załuż anticlines. The active hydrocarbon dispersion in this zone may have resulted from the presence of overthrusts displacing the structures. Moreover, these anomalies may indicate the presence of shallow, maybe poorly sealed hydrocarbon accumulations.

China
Opis:
Radon (222Rn) and thoron (220Rn) from soil gas are very significant factors that can affect the indoor radon level in the first floor or in the basement. China is one of the countries with the highest thorium content in the world. Therefore, it is very significant to study 222Rn/220Rn concentration in the soil in Shenzhen City (SC). A 222Rn/220Rn survey was performed using a portable radon monitor (model RAD7) at 69 sites, covered a total area of 1800 km2 in 2013 to get the original data for radon risk estimation in SC. The average values of 222Rn and 220Rn concentration of soil gas of the total 69 locations are 86 ± 72 kBq•m–3 and 118 ± 85 kBq•m–3, respectively. 222Rn/220Rn concentrations are related to geological lithology. 222Rn concentrations vary from 40 to 370 kBq•m–3 and from 15 to 118 kBq•m–3 in weathered granite products and sediments, respectively, while 220Rn concentrations are from 103 to 435 kBq•m–3 and 2.2 to 96 kBq•m–3. The higher 220Rn values were mainly observed at the sites covered by the weathered granite products. Comparing with the areas of high 222Rn concentration, the areas of high 220Rn values are larger. The distribution of 222Rn concentration in the vertical direction displays an exponential distribution mode, but there is no rule of 220Rn concentration. The investigation suggests that people should pay attention to 220Rn contribution in the radon mapping of SC, as well as in the indoor radon survey.

Opis:
The article reveals the problem of shortage of natural gas in Ukraine as one of the key factors of national energy security. The present states of the fuel and energy sectors, the reasons for shortages of natural gas of domestic production and the perspectives of alternative gas extraction from shale are analyzed. The problems, environmental threats and risks associated with the prospects of development of alternative shale gas sources on the basis of detailed analysis of its production technologies are described. The comparison with the experience of shale gas extraction in the United States, where the technology was used for the first time, and with the consequences of violations of environmental safety is performed.
