Opis:
The study focuses on the environmental evaluation of land in the territory of interest by means of assessing the non-production functions. This topic is currently becoming one of the crucial moments in agriculture, water management as well as nature and landscape conservation. The soil represents an important component of the environment and influences both the quality and the quantity of produced foodstuffs due to the fact that being an abiotic factor, the soil is a part of many different natural and artificial ecosystems, affecting thus the hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere. The soil provides nutrients for plant growth, necessary for animal as well as human nutrition. It plays an important part in recycling and detoxification of organic materials and in the cycles of many elements. The proposed solution consists in the evaluation of the non-production soil functions in a particular territory according to chosen, usually unchangeable, soil properties on the basis of the proposed method of rating. The method is based on creating evaluation classes comprising the individual categories of soil properties. The rating expressing particular categories indicates the range of the non-production functions within the soil-ecological units in the territory of interest. The research was carried out in a territory only moderately impacted by human industrial activities. The results of the evaluation of chosen soil functions can be used in the studies focused on landscape and soil protection or in the proposals of environment-friendly management models in accordance with the rules of agricultural policy included in appropriate regulations aimed at the protection of varied environmental components.

Opis:
Several review articles have emphasized, that a comprehensive set of pedotransfer functions may be applied throughout a wide range of disciplines of Earth system sciences and are of great importance for land surface models. Most pedotransfer functions deducing soil hydraulic data from nonhydraulic soil data such as soil texture and bulk density, yield soil water retention predictions, but do not provide information concerning soil hydraulic conductivity. For this reason, a simple method was developed to estimate soil hydraulic conductivity using soil water retention information. Empirical equations are established to predict soil hydraulic conductivity from soil water retention information. These equations are relatively straightforward and do not require the fitting of nonlinear functions. Predictions of soil hydraulic conductivity using 106 soil samples indicates the reliable performance of the new method. The prediction quality of the new method was estimated from the calibration data set, which produced equivalent results to the Zacharias and Wessolek pedotransfer function, which were even better than the predictions obtained from the original Mualem-van Genuchten model, the Soto fractal model, and the pedotransfer function reported by Weynants and Vereecken. The stochastic structure of the calibration data reflects the presence of important soil structural properties, which are not represented by the soil water retention characteristics.

Opis:
Soil bulk density is one of the main direct indicators of soil health, and is an important aspect of models for determining agroecosystem services potential. By way of applying multi-regression methods, we have created a distributed prediction of soil bulk density used subsequently for topsoil carbon stock estimation. The soil data used for this study were from the Slovakian partial monitoring system-soil database. In our work, two models of soil bulk density in an equilibrium state, with different combinations of input parameters (soil particle size distribution and soil organic carbon content in %), have been created, and subsequently validated using a data set from 15 principal sampling sites of Slovakian partial monitoring system-soil, that were different from those used to generate the bulk density equations. We have made a comparison of measured bulk density data and data calculated by the pedotransfer equations against soil bulk density calculated according to equations recommended by Joint Research Centre Sustainable Resources for Europe. The differences between measured soil bulk density and the model values vary from -0.144 to 0.135 g cm-3 in the verification data set. Furthermore, all models based on pedotransfer functions give moderately lower values. The soil bulk density model was then applied to generate a first approximation of soil bulk density map for Slovakia using texture information from 17 523 sampling sites, and was subsequently utilised for topsoil organic carbon estimation.

Assessment of the possibility of applying selected pedotransfer functions for indicating the retention of forest soils in Poland. Landscape retention influences the water balance of a catchment and the course of flooding events. The degree of retention capabilities of forest soils are much less known than the retention of land used for agriculture. Soil retention capacity influences the formation of a given forest habitat type, floristic species composition, as well as the type and quality of the stand of trees. The analysis was carried out for a regression model dedicated to selected forest soils within the area of Poland, as well as van Genuchten’s and Wösten’s, and Varallyay’s and Mironienko’s models. In order to assess the fit of the models, an independent series of forest soils were used. The models prepared for soils used for agricultural purposes do not result in statistically acceptable fit when it comes to the analyzed forest soils. The analysis of measured and calculated values of total available water indicate good fit of the regression model developed for the analyzed group of podzolic and brown forest soils.
Ocena możliwości zastosowania wybranych funkcji pedotransfer do wyznaczania retencji gleb leśnych w Polsce. Do oceny dopasowania modeli zastosowano niezależną serię gleb leśnych. Przeprowadzone badania potwierdzają lokalny charakter funkcji pedotransfer.

Opis:
Unlike many other countries, tropical regions such as Indonesia still lack publications on pedotransfer functions (PTFs), particularly ones dedicated to the predicting of soil bulk density. Soil bulk density affects soil density, porosity, water holding capacity, drainage, and the stock and flux of nutrients in the soil. However, obtaining access to a laboratory is difficult, time-consuming, and costly. Therefore, it is necessary to utilise PTFs to estimate soil bulk density. This study aims to define soil properties related to soil bulk density, develop new PTFs using multiple linear regression (MLR), and evaluate the performance and accuracy of PTFs (new and existing). Seven existing PTFs were applied in this study. For the purposes of evaluation, Pearson’s correlation (r), mean error (ME), root mean square error (RMSE), and modelling efficiency (EF) were used. The study was conducted in five soil types on Bintan Island, Indonesia. Soil depth and organic carbon (SOC) are soil properties potentially relevant for soil bulk density prediction. The ME, RMSE, and EF values were lower for the newly developed PTFs than for existing PTFs. In summary, we concluded that the newly developed PTFs have higher accuracy than existing PTFs derived from literature. The prediction of soil bulk density will be more accurate if PTFs are applied directly in the area that is to be studied.

The paper considers a method of conditional simulation of spatiotemporal scalar random fields of certain environmental phenomena. The method can be used to predict field values at given space points at specified time, on the basis of field values at other locations and data on second order moment functions in the domain. This approach has been applied to a space-time prognosis of soil contamination fields. The assessment of the spatiotemporal variability of heavy metals' concentrations provides the knowledge needed to monitor and control soil contamination. Empirical data of heavy metal (viz. chromium) concentration in the soil of northern Poland have been used in the study. The acceptance-rejection method has been applied to generate covariance matrices and vectors of discrete field values, taking into account conditional probability distributions. The results of the study show that the considered method can be successfully used to model conditional, spatiotemporal random fields of contamination with relatively small simulation errors.

There are global aspirations to harmonize soil particle- size distribution data measured by the laser diffraction method and by traditional sedimentation techniques, e.g. sieve-pipette methods. The need has arisen therefore to build up a database, containing particle-size distribution values measured by the sieving and pipette method according to the Hungarian standard (sieve-pipette methods-MSZ) and the laser diffraction method according to a widespread and widely used procedure. In our current publication, 155 soil samples measured with sieve-pipette methods-MSZ and laser diffraction method (Malvern Mastersizer 2000, HydroG dispersion unit) were compared. Through the application of the usual size limits at the laser diffraction method, the clay fraction was under- and the silt fraction was overestimated compared to the sieve-pipette methods-MSZ results, and subsequently the soil texture classes were determined according to the results of both methods also differed significantly from each other. Based on our previous experience, the extension of the upper size limit of the clay fraction from 2 to 7 μm increases the comparability of sievepipette methods-MSZ and laser diffraction method, in this way the texture classes derived from the particle-size distributions were also more in accordance with each other. The difference between the results of the two kinds of particle-size distribution measurement methods could be further reduced with the pedotransfer functions presented.

The description of the relationships between the variables for individual months was established on the basis of an exponential function and an exponential function with time derivative of predictor to account for the hysteresis issue. The model with time derivative provided better results. The weakest fitting of modelled data to empirical ones is observed for the winter months. During subsequent seasons, air temperature as well as QG-driven (soil heat flux) models exhibited very high agreement with the empirical data (MBE, RMSE, MAE, and ‘index of agreement’ by Willmott were used to evaluate the models). A restriction in the use of QG for Rn-222 concentration was observed only in winter in the case of snow cover occurrence, which reduces the daily QG variability. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of soil contamination with diesel oil on the early development of three species of the Fabaceae family (Medicago lupulina L., Lotus corniculatus L., Trifolium repens L.). These species have a wide ecological range and they often occur on extensively used lawns. For these reasons, the knowledge on their tolerance to soil pollution with diesel oil can be of great importance in the creative and conservative cultivation of these plant species and their seed production for establishing the greenery of communication routes. The studies were carried out under controlled laboratory conditions. The soil substrates were composed of the loamy sand mixed with diesel oil in an amount of 2.5 g and 5.0 g per 1 kg of absolute dry mass of soil. The germination dynamics were analyzed. The measurements were conducted twice a day for 12 days after sowing. The development of seedlings was determined on the basis of the length, diameter, area and volume of the radicle. These features were determined on 20-day-old seedlings of the tested species. For the analysis of plant material, the technique of the scanned image was used in the “WinRhizo PRO 2009” software. It was proven that the tested species have various tolerances for the petrol oil in the soil and demonstrate various defense mechanisms under the stress conditions. The least changes of the seed germination rate on the soil with diesel oil against the control were indicated for L. corniculatus. The defense strategy of that species relied on the radicle development through increasing the diameter and – in consequence – the surface and the volume. M. lupulina also showed good germination capacity in the presence of diesel oil, but the radicle was shorter in comparison to the control. The germination rate of T. repens in the contaminated soil was significantly reduced. The recommendation for using not only L. corniculatus, but also M. lupulina on the contaminated areas should be taken into consideration.

The heterogeneity of both unsaturated hydraulic conductivity and water retention was measured with a high spatial resolution on a transect using an evaporation method. Fifteen undisturbed 100 cm 3 soil cores were taken on a transect every 10 cm from the topsoil of a water repellent sandy site. Five dynamic water retention curves and four unsaturated conductivity curves were determined for each core. We conducted measurements without further saturation in the laboratory in order to achieve field-like conditions. The initial water contents were hetero- geneous, indicating different hysteretic conditions and water repellent areas. The scattering of the water retention curves was high, while the heterogeneity of unsaturated conductivity curves was unexpectedly low. Two scaling approaches were used to describe the heterogeneity: one with and one without considering hysteresis. The concept of scaling applies well to describing the heterogeneity of both hydraulic functions. Including hysteresis leads to similar results than excluding hysteresis. The distribution of the hydraulic conductivity and the water retention were inde- pendent from each other. The results give important information for numerical simulation of the water flow with heterogeneous hydraulic functions.

Opis:
Organic liquid retention of soils is a primary input variable for modelling the nonaqueous phase liquid transport and behaviour in the subsurface. In environmental and soil physical practice, it is mainly determined by scaling based on the water retention of soils or with charts of average empirical values of organic liquid retention or the fitting parameters of hydraulic functions. Predicting the fitting parameters of organic liquid retention curves with pedotransfer functions might be a promising alternative method, but this topic has only been researched to a limited extent. Thus we investigated the applicability of different hydraulic functions (3- and 4- parameter form of the van Genuchten equation and Brutsaert equation) for fitting organic liquid retention characteristics. Multivariate linear regression was used to build and develop pedotransfer functions, modelling relations between original and transformed values of basic soil properties and organic liquid retention. We attempted to generate parametric pedotransfer functions. According to our results, the applicability of hydraulic functions for fitting nonaqueous phase liquid retention curves to the experimental data was proven. The investigations gave promising results for the possibility to estimate soil nonaqueous phase liquid retention with parametric pedotransfer functions.
