Opis:
Results of 10-years runoff plot experiments carried out on two sites of the Lublin Upland were presented. Despite similar soils and climatic conditions, studies showed large differences in annual soil erodibility (K factor of the USLE) between both sites. Experimentally derived values of the factor were dependent on tillage direction and time of maintaining runoff-plots in fallow conditions. On a site cultivated in contour direction, 4-year period was insufficient to achieve K values similar to the predicted values from the USLE. In contrast to this, on a site cultivated up-down slope, similar experimental and predicted K values were obtained after 2 years and remained at the same level during next 4 years. Results enabled to identify limitations of the USLE application for erosion prediction in Poland. Studies proved that soil erodibility could be used for prediction of erosion risk for silt loam developed from loess. However, application of soil erodibility approach to the event–base models is questionable for variation of K factor in the initial years. As far, the factors affecting soil erodibility changes are not recognized and need further research.
Koncepcja podatności gleby na erozję, zaproponowana w modelu USLE i wiążąca zespół parametrów glebowych z czynnikiem erozyjności opadu i spływu powierzchniowego, znajduje zastosowanie w wielu modelach prognozujących erozję wodną. Brak rozpoznania przyczyn zróżnicowania podatności gleby na erozję w okresie do osiągnięcia jej stabilizacji ogranicza możliwość wykorzystania czynnika K w modelach symulujących pojedyncze zdarzenia erozyjne. Nieuwzględnienie w tych modelach aktualnej wartości podatności gleby na erozję prowadzi do przeszacowania prognozowanych wielkości erozji. Określenie czynników warunkujących zróżnicowanie podatności gleby na erozję wymaga dalszych badań.

Opis:
Spatial raster distribution models of the values of factors influencing the potential soil erosion hazard were created using GIS technologies. The erosion hazard was estimated using the modified RUSLE (Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation) model. The potential of annual soil loss of arable land was calculated. The spatial gradation of erosion violation of administrative and territorial units in the steppe zone of Ukraine was provided. About 32.7% of arable land that is subject to high erosion hazard was allocated. About 48 administrative and territorial units have a specific area less than 5% of erosion disturbed lands. They are characterized by a resistant type of agrolandscapes regarding the water-erosion processes. Most administrative and territorial units with high erosive-accumulative potential (the percentage of the area is 15% or more) are located in the western and southwestern parts of the steppe zone of Ukraine. The specific area of erosion hazardous lands reaches up to 32% in separate administrative-territorial units. The obtained results allow determining the need for a spatially discrete-distribution implementation of adaptive-landscape anti-erosion design with the elements of soil-protective agriculture.

Opis:
The objective of this work was to the study the erosive force of raindrops and the shear stress on the soil erodibility of disturbed and saturated agricultural soil. A mathematical development was used to determine a new approach to the shear stress. The soil erodibility is calculated using the WEPP (water erosion prediction project) model. To realize this work, an experimental study was led in a laboratory using the rainfall simulator. The soil tray used in this study has a length of 2 m, width of 50 cm and a depth of 15 cm and the slope was adjusted with a system. The soils used were sandy and silty agricultural soils. The results show that the relationship between the erosive force of raindrops and the shear stress on the soil erodibility increased respectively as a power and linear function with an important coeffiient of determination. As regards the relationships between soil erodibility and the mean raindrop diameter, the evolution is represented by a power function with high coeffiient of determination.

Opis:
The vulnerability of soil by wind erosion using the wind erosion equation (WEQ) in geographic information systems (GIS) was demonstrated on the cadastral area of Přísnotice, southeast of the Czech Republic. Raster layers were created for input factors of WEQ and potential soil loss by wind was calculated using the Raster Calculator. Subsequently, map outputs showing the potential vulnerability of soil to wind erosion were made. In the first variant, where the protective effect of the barriers was not taken into account, the wind erosion intensity reached 47.6 t.ha-1.year-1. In the second variant, where the protective effect of the barrier was assumed, the loss of soil was lower, the maximum value was 4.7 t.ha-1.year-1. The soil loss limit was exceeded, even in a situation where a relatively high protective barrier effect has been proposed. The advantage of determining of wind erosion vulnerability using ArcGIS is that it is possible to identify particular parts of soil blocks from the map outputs, which are the most vulnerable. Similarly, it is possible to design a windbreak network and simulate its protective effect using ArcGIS.

Opis:
Continuous no-till management of sloping cultivated areas can promote soil property transformations, causing changes in aggregation and dispersion. The objective of this work was (i) to quantify the readily and mechanically dispersible clays using different methods and (ii) to examine their relationships with soil properties along a catena under no-till management. For this study, the catena was divided into three distinct parts: crest, upper-slope and mid-slope positions. Undisturbed soil cores were sampled at each slope position to determine the following soil properties: organic carbon, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, Al3+, P, pH, cation exchange capacity and total clay content. Additionally, the levels of readily dispersible clay were measured using turbidimeter and hydrometer methods, whereas mechanically dispersible clay was quantified using the turbidimeter method. We observed high influence of total clay content and organic carbon on soil flocculation; P, Mg2+ and cation exchange capacity were positively related to clay dispersion. Soil management and water transport downslope are probably influencing changes in soil properties and determining the distribution of dispersible clay contents along the catena. No relationships were observed between readily dispersible clay measured using turbidimeter and hydrometer in terms of quantity. Hydrometer and turbidimeter measurements can deliver significantly different results regarding dispersible clay quantification, potentially leading to misinterpretations concerning the amount of clay dispersed in water.

Opis:
Water and wind erosion are the most powerful factors in the decrease of soil fertility and a threat to food security. The study was conducted on the steppe zone in Ukraine (total area of 167.4 thous. km2), including agricultural land (131.6 thous. km2). At the first stage, the modeling of spatial differentiation of water and wind erosion manifestations was carried out to calculate losses of soil (Mg∙ha–1) and to determine their degradation. At the second stage, soil-climatic bonitet of zonal soils (points) is carried out to determine their natural fertility (Mg∙ha–1). At the third stage, the spatial adjustment of the natural soil fertility to the negative effect of erosion was carried out. This made it possible to calculate crop losses and total financial losses due to water and wind erosion. The integrated spatial modeling showed that about 68.7% of arable land was constantly affected by the combined erosion, in particular the area of low eroded arable land (16.8%), and medium and highly eroded land (22.1%). Due to erodibility of soil, about 23.3% of agricultural land transferred from the category of high and medium quality to medium, low and very low quality, which is caused by the loss of soil fertility of up to 70%, crop losses of up to 1.93 Mg∙ha–1 ha–1 and eduction of agricultural income up to 390 USD∙ha–1. In the steppe region under the research, gross crop losses from erosion were up to 15.11 thous. Mg∙ha–1 (3.05 mln USD). In order to protect soils, improve fertility and increase crop yields in the steppe zone in Ukraine, the following measures were suggested: adaptive and landscape erosion control design with elements of conservation farming in accordance with the spatial differentiation of soil quality and extent of water erosion deflation danger.

Opis:
Soil Erodibility Factor (K-factor) is a crucial component of a widely used equation for soil erosion assessment known as the USLE (Universal Soil Loss Equation) or its revised version – RUSLE. It reflects the potential of the soil of being detached due to rainfalls or runoffs. So far, an extensive number of researches provide different approaches and techniques in the evaluation of K-factor. This study applies soil erodibility estimation in the soils of the South Caucasian region using soil data prepared by the International Soil Reference and Information Centre (ISRIC) with 250 m resolution, whereas the recent K-factor estimation implemented in the EU scale was with 500 m resolution. Soil erodibility was assessed using an equation involving soil pH levels. The study utilises Trapesoidal equation of soil data processing and preparation, as suggested by ISRIC, for various layers of surface soil data with up to 0-30 cm depth. Both usage of SoilGrids data and its processing as well as estimation of K-factor applying soil pH levels have demonstrated sufficient capacity and accuracy in soil erodibility assessment. The final output result has revealed the K-factor values varying from 0.037 and more than 0.060 t ha h/MJ mm within the study area.

Opis:
The investigations were carried out on a loess slope in the Brzeźnica village, in the Rudnik commune. Nine points were chosen, in which particular parameters being parts of the examined models, were determined. On the basis of the literature, eight models for the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) erodibility factor determination were designated. The chosen models were the ones proposed by: Wishmeier, Monchareonm, Torii et al. and Walker (all based on texture and organic matter content, Wischmeier and Smith (based on texture organic matter content and additionally on aggregate classes), Wiliams et al. (based on texture and organic carbon content), Renard et al. as well as Stone and Hilborn (both based only on texture). The investigated site was characterized as well. The statistical conclusions were drawn and the obtained results were compared with the results presented in the literature.
