Opis:
For years now, the continual degradation of soils in the tropics, and around the globe has continued to be one of the challenges facing humankind. Soil erosion is one of the factors gearing low food production, environmental pollution and degradation, acting like an hindrance towards the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) two (zero hunger) including SDG six (clean water and sanitation). The importance of saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) of a soil to Agriculturist, Environmentalist including Engineers cannot be exhausted, as this single hydro-physical soil property controls many processes in the soil system. An experiment was conducted to access the vulnerability of University of Abuja soils to erosion. Result of data analysis proves that the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the soils is slow to extremely slow with value recorded at (0.89 – 4.50 mm hr-1). Field data outcome presents a view that the soils of the area is mostly very compact to compact, with porosity value ranging from (1 – 21%). Saturated hydraulic conductivity estimation was done using hydro-physical models. The performance of the models were evaluated using Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) statistics. Outcome of the model comparation proves the two model as been able to effectively estimate the water flux of the area, presenting RMSE values at (5.67 and 2.41 respectively for the two models). The study thus concluded that for loss of arable land to be minimized or avoided and for environmental sustainability, ecological tool like planting of grasses including trees can be employed to salvage the impending case of soil erosion in the area.

The addition of biochar is often proposed to increase agricultural soil quality and crop yield, while at the same time sequestering carbon from the atmosphere to help mitigate global climate change. In this research, the pore-size distribution, and saturated hydraulic conductivity of sandy loam and clay loam soils amended with varying dosages (0-10% dry basis) and two different particle sizes (0.5-420 μm (PS1) or 421-841 μm (PS2)) of wood-derived biochar were investigated under compacted conditions (5, 10, or 15 standard Proctor rammer blows (5B, 10B, or 15B, respectively)). In the 5B compacted SL (SL-5B) soil, the volume of the soil fissures and transmission pores decreased, while the volume of the storage pores (SP) increased with increasing wood-derived biochar dosage. 23.1±0.9% of the volume of the 5B compacted clay loam (CL-5B) are storage pores, this value increased to 27.4±2.0% upon amendment with 10% PS1. The saturated hydraulic conductivity of the sandy loam-5B soil amended with 10% PS1 decreased from 6.8±0.3 to 0.80±0.03 mm h-1. The sandy loam farmland C emissions decreased by 0.071 tC ha-1 y-1, whereas CL farmland C emissions decreased by 0.091 tC ha-1 y-1.

Opis:
Gathering information about soil properties in an efficient way is essential for many soil applications also for very shallow geothermal systems (e.g. collector systems or heat baskets). In the field, electrical resistivity tomogramphy measurements enable non-invasive and extensive analyses regarding the determination of soil properties. For a better understanding of measured electrical resistivity values in relation to soil properties within this study, a laboratory setup was developed. The structure of this laboratory setup is geared to gather electrical resistivity or rather electrical conductivity values which are directly comparable to data measured in the field. Within this setup grain size distribution, moisture content, and bulk density, which are the most important soil parameters affecting the electrical resistivity, can be adjusted. In terms of a better estimation of the geothermal capability of soil, thermal conductivity measurements were also implemented within the laboratory test sequence. The generated data reveals the serious influence of the water content and also provides a huge impact of the bulk density on the electrical as well as on the thermal conductivity. Furthermore, different behaviour patterns of electrical and thermal conductivity in their particular relation to the different soil parameters could be identified.

W artykule omówiono mechanizmy związane z wymianą ciepła w gruncie. Dominującym sposobem przekazywania ciepła w gruncie jest przewodzenie. Przewodność cieplna gruntu zależy przede wszystkim od rodzaju, porowatości i wilgotności gruntu. W gruncie zachodzi również zjawisko konwekcji swobodnej i wymuszonej.
The article contains the most important issues connected with heat transfer in the ground. The main form of heat transfer in ground is conduction. Thermal conductivity mainly depends on type of the soil and its porosity and moisture. Inside there are also phenomena called forced and natural convection. The aim of the work is overview and description of heat transfer mechanisms in the ground. Knowledge of thermal phenomena occurring in the ground is necessary to determine the ground temperature field using numerical methods and semi-empirical formulas

Opis:
Several review articles have emphasized, that a comprehensive set of pedotransfer functions may be applied throughout a wide range of disciplines of Earth system sciences and are of great importance for land surface models. Most pedotransfer functions deducing soil hydraulic data from nonhydraulic soil data such as soil texture and bulk density, yield soil water retention predictions, but do not provide information concerning soil hydraulic conductivity. For this reason, a simple method was developed to estimate soil hydraulic conductivity using soil water retention information. Empirical equations are established to predict soil hydraulic conductivity from soil water retention information. These equations are relatively straightforward and do not require the fitting of nonlinear functions. Predictions of soil hydraulic conductivity using 106 soil samples indicates the reliable performance of the new method. The prediction quality of the new method was estimated from the calibration data set, which produced equivalent results to the Zacharias and Wessolek pedotransfer function, which were even better than the predictions obtained from the original Mualem-van Genuchten model, the Soto fractal model, and the pedotransfer function reported by Weynants and Vereecken. The stochastic structure of the calibration data reflects the presence of important soil structural properties, which are not represented by the soil water retention characteristics.

Opis:
Cocoa remains in the same field for decades, resulting in plantations dominated with aging trees growing on variable and depleted soils. We determined the spatio-temporal variability of key soil properties in a (5.81 ha) field from the International Cocoa Genebank, Trinidad using geophysical methods. Multi-year (2008-2009) measurements of apparent electrical conductivity at 0-0.75 m (shallow) and 0.75-1.5 m (deep) were conducted. Apparent electrical conductivity at deep and shallow gave the strongest linear correlation with clay-silt content (R = 0.67 and R = 0.78, respectively) and soil solution electrical conductivity (R = 0.76 and R = 0.60, respectively). Spearman rank correlation coefficients ranged between 0.89-0.97 and 0.81-0.95 for apparent electrical conductivity at deep and shallow, respectively, signifying a strong linear dependence between measurement days. Thus, in the humid tropics, cocoa fields with thick organic litter layer and relatively dense understory cover, experience minimal fluctuations in transient properties of soil water and temperature at the topsoil resulting in similarly stable apparent electrical conductivity at shallow and deep. Therefore, apparent electrical conductivity at shallow, which covers the depth where cocoa feeder roots concentrate, can be used as a fertility indicator and to develop soil zones for efficient application of inputs and management of cocoa fields.

Opis:
Marble powder is one of carbonate rock amendments that is used to improve soil reaction. We hypothesized that the powdered marble addition can cause favorable changes in hydraulic properties of sandy soils. Six levels of marble powder addition to an aridisol soil (0%; M0; 5%; M5; 10%; M10; 15%; M15; 20%; M20 and 25%, M25; by bulk volume) were analyzed in triplicate. The saturated hydraulic conductivity and soil water retention curves were obtained. Pore space properties were investigated using soil water retention curves, mercury intrusion porosimetry and scanning electron microscopy. The saturated hydraulic conductivity significantly decreased (between 83 and 97% for M5 and M25 respectively) and parameters α and n of the van Genuchten model significantly decreased in marble-amended soils. Both field capacity and permanent wilting point increased with the addition of marble powder. Plant-available water, increased significantly until 10% of marble powder application; higher percentages of application did not provide additional significant changes in the plant-available water. Pore space distributions from soil water retention curves parameters showed an increase in the pore size range and a decrease in the average pore size; pore space distribution from the scanning electron microscopy also showed the presence of a new family of dominant pore sizes which was not detected by the soil water retention curves parameters approach. It was concluded that the addition of marble powder can improve the ability of soil to store water providing an advantage for irrigation water management in water scarce environments. Further research will have to address the impact of marble powder amendment under field semi-arid conditions.

Opis:
The progressive degradation of soils is a recently increasing environmental problem. The risk of soil degradation may be associated, for example, with landslides, flooding, soil erosion. However, these are relatively rare phenomena compared to the risk of chemical degradation caused by human activity. Given the limited research on the positive effect of miscanthus biochar on soil properties, a study was carried out aimed at determining changes in pH, electrical conductivity, sorption properties, and mobility of selected heavy metals in sandy soil treated with various chemicals. Biochar used in the study was produced at a temperature of 300°C. The addition of biochar to soil generally increased the pH value, regardless of the type of chemical degradation. The study revealed a decrease in the hydrolytic acidity value and, at the same time, no significant changes in the content of alkaline cations and sorption capacity of the biochar-treated soil. The best effect on reducing the mobility of trace elements was achieved by adding biochar to the soil supplemented with acidifying substances. Bearing in mind the current agricultural and environmental problems, there is a need to increase the effectiveness of biochar and to direct its action to improve specific soil properties.
