Opis:
Socio-economic development creates a lot of problems and challenges. At various levels, these problems are different, for example: • globalisation, generating increased demand for transport, presents new challenges for transport, especially international; • increasing disparities in regional development, as a source of social problems, make it necessary to look for more effective ways of eliminating these disparities; • problems of towns and large cities, associated amongst other things with the growing needs of transport and insufficient infrastructure, reduce the standard of living and require an urgent solution. Contemporary socio-economic problems have significant impact on transport, but on the other hand through changes in transport, many of them can be partly solved. This article aims to analyze the possibilities of developing inland waterways to solve today’s social and economic problems.

Opis:
Index of Sustainable Economic Welfare), bądź jego modyfikacji wskaźnika autentycznego rozwoju GPI (ang. Genuine Progress Indicator). Druga część referatu będzie poświęcona zastosowaniu do badania dobrobytu społeczno- ekonomicznego modelowania miękkiego.

The paper examines the relationship between the socioeconomic status and age of savers and saving rates. The analysis is based on the results of two empirical studies carried out in 2004 and 2006 by direct interview method on random samples of 1,305 and 1,320 households respectively. The results of the studies show that the socioeconomic status of savers is a major factor that influences private saving rates. Rószkiewicz has discovered two conflicting trends. In one trend, households with a relatively low socioeconomic status tend to become increasingly big spenders with age. The trend is the stronger the lower is the status of the household head. In another trend, households with a relatively high social status tend to limit consumption with time. This trend increases with the socioeconomic status of the household head.

Opis:
Preventing school dropout and promoting successful graduation is a national concern in Bulgaria that poses a significant challenge to schools and educational communities working with youth at risk of school failure. Few studies have examined predictors of dropping out of school before students reach high school and their data have been analysed. Research shows dropping out is strongly tied to family psychopathology, individual characteristics and childhood development disorders. Finally, yet importantly, there are some socioeconomic and cultural factors associated with dropping out of school. A multifactor approach is needed in order to understand the risk factors for school dropout. Identifying the predictors of school failure is crucial for understanding the causes and processes of dropping out, which, in turn, can help guide the creation of effective programs for the prevention of this problem. Implications for prevention of early high school dropout are discussed. The authors place an emphasis on applying a trans-cultural approach to maximize the potential benefit of dropout prevention programs.

In the 70s and 80s, a number of analyses of nonresponses in questionnaires was conducted with the assumption that nonresponses carry much important information. The share of expressed nonresponses can be an indicator of apathy, ignorance and lack of information. Studies revealed a higher share of nonresponses being expressed by women in comparison to men. Changing social conditions, such as the period of transition after the change of political system, the emancipation of women and financial and economic crises, can have an impact on the gender inequality expressed in nonresponses. This article will analyse the differences in nonresponse answers between men and women to some socioeconomic questions for three periods: 1) 2000–2003, the period after the transition and before accession to the European Union (EU); 2) 2004–2008, the period after accession to the EU and the presidency of the Council of the EU, as well as a period of economic growth; and 3) 2009–2013, the beginning of economic, financial and political crises in Slovenia. The number of nonresponses between men and women is different in the three observed periods. In opposition to our assumption, the gap was higher in the first two periods and lower in the period of economic, financial and political crises.

Introduction. Blood pressure (BP) is a complex entity which is influenced by many factors. The impact of socioeconomic class and body mass index (BMI) on hypertension has been reported in the past but literature on their influence on blood pressure in healthy adolescents is very limited. Aim. The aim of the study is to assess the influence of BMI and socioeconomic status on BP in healthy adolescents. Material and methods. This cross sectional study includes three hundred healthy adolescents. Anthropometric and BP measurements were done. BMI categories were derived using WHO Asia Pacific guidelines. An updated Kuppuswami scale was used for determining socioeconomic status. Multiple regression analysis and analysis of variance was used to study impact of socioeconomic and BMI classes on BP. Results. Obese subjects of upper socioeconomic class have higher blood pressure values. Strong significant differences in the mean values of systolic blood pressure (f-23.569; p<0.00001), diastolic blood pressure (f-22.470; p<0.00001) and mean arterial pressure (f-27.454; <0.00001) were observed in different BMI classes. Except for diastolic blood pressure (f-2.713; p <0.030) rest of BP indices did not differ significantly in different SES classes. Conclusion. Obese subjects of upper socioeconomic class are prone for development of future hypertension. High BMI is significant risk factor for high BP, however socioeconomic class of the subject should also be considered as predisposing factor for high BP.

Opis:
The article compares European Union countries in terms of socioeconomic development and determines Poland’s position in the league table. The author uses 29 statistical indicators characterizing different aspects of socioeconomic development in EU countries. The league table was compiled using various multidimensional comparative analysis methods in accordance with a development model proposed by Z. Hellwig. Poland ranks far behind other EU countries in the league table, 23rd or 24th depending on the adopted analysis method. Poland ranks among the top 10 EU countries only in five socioeconomic indicators. Poland’s main advantages include an unpolluted environment, a well-developed higher education system and high-quality farm produce, Stec says. The country’s weaknesses, on the other hand, include a low GDP per capita level, high unemployment, and the need to export hi-tech products. Among the countries that joined the EU together with Poland in May 2004, the Czech Republic, Malta, Slovenia, Hungary, Estonia and Lithuania rank much higher than Poland in the league table.

This article explores the development in Bolivia under president Evo Morales, through a critical postcolonial approach. From a traditional liberal perspective, this article concludes that the liberal democratic system under Morales has not been deepening, though certain new participatory aspects of democracy, including socio-economic reforms have been carried out. In contrast, this article analyses to what extent the presidency of Evo Morales may be seen as the end of the postcolonialism, and the beginning of a new era in which Bolivia’s indigenous people finally have been incorporated into the forward development of a multi-ethnic society. By analysing issues such as time, nation, land, space, globalization and language, the conclusion is that the new constitution marks a fresh beginning, one beyond the colonial and postcolonial eras, for indigenous groups, but it will not bring back the old indigenous societies as was dominating the territory of today’s modern state.

The presented study is intended to suggest the best model to predict students’ academic performance at university level. For this purpose, primary data was collected from 400 undergraduate and graduate students of eight departments of Mirpur University of Science and Technology (MUST), which were selected through stratified random sampling. CGPA is used as an indicator of students’ academic performance. Stepwise linear regression is used to select the best model to predict students’ academic performance at tertiary level. The final model selected through stepwise regression includes six variables: the student’s IQ, ownership of AC, gender, geographic location, self-study hours and ownership of fridge as significant predictors of students’ academic performance at tertiary level. IQ, ownership of assets and self-study hours are found to have a positive effect on CGPA while being male and the distance of the household to nearest market are found to have a negative effect on CGPA.

There are several papers available addressing the challenges for Future Internet that result from socio-economic aspects; such challenges must be obviously taken into account when constructing and developing Future Internet. This paper, however, takes an opposite view that from the dynamics of the development of Internet itself (or Future Internet) result challenges for the socio-economic development and even for the paradigm of understanding economy; such challenges must be taken into account first, then - in a feedback loop -lead to the modification of socio-economic challenges for Future Internet. This change of perspective is necessary because the analysis of socio-economic challenges for Future Internet is typically based on a classical paradigm of equilibrium economics. While useful, this paradigm is limited and has been shown incomplete, e.g., by the recent world-wide financial and economic crisis. This paper shows that the informational revolution - including but not limited to the development of Internet - has already changed the behavior of main socio-economic agents as well as of economic markets and our understanding of them; thus, new perspectives are needed. The paper also shows that a useful perspective is that not of expected benefits from Future Internet - there are many such benefits and they will surely motivate enough economic development of Future Internet - but of socio-economic threats resulting from the dynamic development of the Internet. There are several such threats and conflicts that can be foreseen: the conflict between corporatization and governance; the conflict between direct and indirect limits to freedom; the trend to- wards elitarism inherent in Internet development dynamics versus democracy; the threat of network and computer domination over people, etc. Some of such threats and conflicts are discussed in the paper.

Low socioeconomic status (SES) is often seen as a risk factor for lower academic achievement, so this study explains how teacher support and equity are related to higher student engagement and achievement in low SES school contexts. Based on the results, student behavioural engagement is related to their achievement. The results of the multiple regression analysis show that teacher support and equity predict student emotional engagement statistically significantly, while behavioural engagement predicts only equity. No significant teacher support and equity prognostic values were found for student achievements. The study’s results encourage further research and the search for answers to the question of what kind of teacher behaviour creates a favourable learning environment for all students in low SES context schools.

The research included questionnaire information (socio-economic condition, lifestyle), measurements and tests of strength, agility, endurance, flexibility, and reaction time. To determinate the relationship between fitness and five factors stepwise multiple regression was used. The results showed that higher stress level had negative influence on grip strength of hand and agility of shuttle run. Exposure to smoking had a negative impact on result in grip strength of hand, endurance, and explosive power of the lower extremities. The number of people in family had negative effect on grip strength of hand, however lifestyle had a positive influence on number of sit-ups (abdominal muscular strength and endurance). In case of youth characterized by lower BMI category, weaker handgrip and increased spine flexibility were observed. Socio-economic conditions mentioned above had small influence on physical activity

Opis:
The article focuses on a new approach to socioeconomic development in Poland and the European Union. Special macroregional programs have been adopted for the 2007-2013 period in the EU in connection with the bloc’s territorial cohesion policy. A total of 13 macroregions have been identified, including two covering Poland-the Baltic Sea region and Central and Eastern Europe. The methodology used in the article is based on an analysis of both Polish and EU documents, the authors say. On this basis, Szlachta and Zaleski identified the problems that need to be resolved to take full advantage of the potential of socioeconomic programs in Poland and the EU as a whole. After 2013, the macroregions are expected to play a greater role in the European cohesion policy. Since the local government reform in Poland on Jan. 1, 1999 and the country’s entry to the European Union on May 1, 2004, socioeconomic development has been pursued in Poland not only at the national but also at the provincial level. This model, however, has not made it possible to effectively deal with supra-provincial and interregional problems, according to the authors. A pioneering project for the 2007-2013 period is a Strategy for the Socioeconomic Development of Eastern Poland Through 2020, which covers the five poorest provinces in the country, Lubelskie, Podkarpackie, Podlaskie, Świętokrzyskie, and Warmińsko-Mazurskie. The strategy became the basis for a special European Union operational program for eastern Poland for the 2007-2013 period. In the article, Szlachta and Zaleski discuss experiences and conclusions resulting from this projectin the context of the conditions shaping regional policy in Poland and across the European Union. These conditions have changed substantially in recent years, according to the authors. In 2010, local governments in five Polish provinces, Dolnośląskie, Lubuskie, Opolskie, Wielkopolskie, and Zachodniopomorskie, decided to start working on a strategy for western Poland. At the same time, the Polish Ministry of Regional Development, in cooperation with local governments in the eastern provinces, launched work to update the strategy for eastern Poland. In the final section of the article, the authors discuss the ways in such programs could be used to stimulate Poland’s socioeconomic development.
