Opis:
In his article the author tries to show the essence, forms and areas of contemporary poverty and to diagnose the state of poverty in Poland. He also presents some psychosocial consequences of poverty and deprivation. Then he characterises the Catholic Church's attitude towards the problem of poverty and he attempts to point to some remedial measures that can be taken by local societies and parish communities. The author demonstrates that basically poverty is a structural problem. Generally people are poor not because they are losers, or because they are not clever enough, or they are unlucky. They are poor because the system, in which society is organised, including the economic system, is just as it is. Poverty has many causes and various consequences. The causes and the consequences are not only related to one another, but they reinforce one another. Struggle against poverty should comprise a possibly broadest range of causes. Social, political and economic changes are necessary, and so is making the policies in the domain of social services more dynamic as well as connecting them with charity work. The possibilities of the Church in the field of charity work are still significant. There is still a need for initiatives on the local scale, comprising a decanate or neighbouring parishes. According to the author, it is advisable that when fulfilling the various tasks or programmes connected with aid all available ways of co-operation with social and state institutions should be used. The experience of recent years shows that such co-operation is possible and often fruitful.

The paper seeks to work out in a synthetic manner the basic views of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński on the issues concerning the foundations of the Catholic social doctrine. The author puts forward and justifies a thesis about a personalistic dimension of the Catholic social doctrine according to Cardinal Wyszyński. He shows the main elements of the teaching of the Primate of the Millennium, such as: human rights, the problems of marriage and family, national issues, the idea of a moral-social order, the problems of labour, the right to private property. The paper points to the main foundations and sources of the teaching of Primate Wyszyński, i.e. the Bible, the Magisterium of the Church, the encyclicals of Pope John Paul II.

In his article, the author outlines the values preferred by teachers and those aspiring to the profession. The presented data point to a very broad convergence between what teachers and students indicated with regard to their attitude towards values. Although one can observe certain, rather subtle, differences (related to, among others, the socio-demographic characteristics of those surveyed), they are of secondary importance and do not cause the axiological bases for the functioning of both groups to differ. What is significant is also the placement of such values as safety, responsibility and children. These values have a static character, connected with necessity and, at the same time, with the need to maintain one’s property. They proved to be slightly more appreciated by teachers than by students. The research shows one essential yet weak correlation: two values, wisdom and honesty, find a slightly wider acknowledgement among teachers than among their future colleagues. The same can be said of the case when the same values are chosen as primary. In this context, referring everything that takes place in the social space to distant, better times seems to be justified. No matter how it was in the real historical dimension, it appears justified to assert that it is undoubtedly better to live in an environment where the majority of those representing a given professional group (especially one as important for the social structure as teachers) recognise the importance of wisdom and honesty.

This paper examines various analyses of the relationship between citizenship and rights, drawing on the work of T H Marshal, Karl Vasak and John Urry, and relates these to citizenship education. It is argued that citizenship can be defined around conceptions of human rights, and that these have developed in civil, political and social phases. Rights are consequent on membership of a community, but we have seen, particularly in the development of the European Union, a decoupling of rights from territory. As we have multiple identities, we also may have multiple citizenships. The paper moves to analyse how communities are constructed, and identifies iconic, symbolic and enactive aspects in the formation of a community. Relating these to citizenship education, it is argued that Jerome Bruner’s model of learning is particularly appropriate. While citizenship education has traditionally focused on the iconic and symbolic, it is necessary for young people to engage inactively with citizenship in order to learn civic participation, and such active learning is best focussed on the extension of human rights into new domains.

Opis:
The Catholic Church’s Social Teaching dealing with mankind is interested in the person and their way of progressing in the world. As John Paul II stated, Catholic Social Teaching “belongs [...] to the field [...] of theology, particularly moral theology” (SRS 41; CA 55). Polish moralists in the area of social moral theological studies undertake the issue of economic-social life, and in particular its anthropological dimension. Moral reflections from the theological point of view allow for an integral grasping of the involvement of the person in the life of society. The goal of the presented report is to show an integral concept of the person as the fundamental dimension of social-economic life. The principle source of this work is comprised of views presented on the given topic by the nation’s moralists during over a dozen lately held yearly meetings of the Section of Polish Moral Theologians. The contents of the report are divided into three parts: (1) the integrated vision of the person as the principle element of evaluating the social-economic order; (2) threats to the human person in the context of contemporary social-political life and (3) pointing to ways of overcoming these threats.

Friedrich August von Hayek, the winner of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics, is one of the most important representatives of economic and social neo-liberalism, who, despite basing his economic theory on Darwin’s Theory of Evolution and on basic principles of the prime liberalism, sees the necessity of distance himself from its shape. Von Hayek postulates raising the status of the family and of tradition as the foundations of cultural progress, of moral norms in ethics, without which human activity in general would be, in his opinion, out of the question. He also proclaims himself in favor of accepting the universal legal norms worked out in the Roman law and perceives the very essence and foundation for the human culture in the Christian religion. Although his neo-liberalism considerably enriches the ideas of classical liberalism, this direction in the thought requires a further development, in order to achieve a complete economic culture that as its aim has the common good, in which both the good of God Himself is inscribed as if the ultimate reason of the Universe, and the good of human persons as the peak of the realization of man’s freedom - also in the economic aspect.

Opis:
In nearly every modern society, patriotism, as a form of love related to one’s homeland, possesses its own specific semantic colours. This is so due to historical and cultural differences between nations. In recent debates about the condition of patriotism in Poland as well as political disputes, patriotism is often mentioned as, alongside with others, a civilian virtue. According to various research on public opinions, patriotism is recognised as one of the most distinctive characteristics of the Poles (beside religiousness and resourcefulness). It is a virtue as well as an attitude which Poles manifest in various ways (from the so-called “football” patriotism to simple daily work solidly done with honesty and diligence for the good of one’s homeland). This paper presents a conception of patriotism from the Catholic Social Teaching viewpoint. This teaching, taking into account both Divine Revelation and past experiences of mankind (the socalled “hermeneutical arch” of Moral Theology, perceives the phenomenon of patriotism in a wider context such as nation, homeland, country and international community). The Church insists on upbringing and education of love towards one’s homeland, while distances its teaching clearly and decisively from racial prejudice and hypernationalism (cf. Ad Gentes, 15).

Opis:
The dialog that has been conducted for a few years between a group of Christian social thinkers and economists on moral aspects of economic activity has led to the creation of a new science discipline called economic personalism. On the one hand it stipulates the need to express economic processes within ethical categories, on the other hand it perceives the necessity to elaborate a strong economic theory. Economic personalists refer to the works of those thinkers who returned to the basic economic inspiration as a field belonging predominantly to moral philosophy. This school is sometimes called the Austrian School or the School of Classical Liberalism. A significant role in the economic personalism development was performed by its forerunners who noticed what was lacking in the previous interpretations of Catholic social thought. Among the there are John Paul II, Michael Novak, Rocco Buttiglione and the Acton Institute. The intellectual sources of economic personalism are mainly related to concept of personalism developed in Poland. Its specific thesis, seen in the maxim that “each person ought to be affirmed for the sake of it itself” also relates to the economic life. Economic personalists formulate principles that are spokesmen in order to promote a free society built on virtues. They are expressed in the following way: pre-eminence of a human being: economy and human dignity; human capital: creation and creativity; dignity of human work: calling for enterprise, integral development of human being, manufacture and personalism, participation, economic common wealth, helpfulness, market restrictions; preferential option for the poor: solidarity and social equity.

Opis:
The problem of the development of a human person and the whole mankind has a significant place in the post Vaticanum Secundum social teaching of the Catholic church. This year’s anniversary of two social encyclicals: Paul VI’s Populorum progressio (1967) and John Paul II’s Sollicitudo rei socialis (1987) indicates the need of undertaking theological and anthropological reflection upon the process of development. The Catholic social teaching placing a human person in the center of all social, political and economic processes evaluates the quality of development from the perspective of respecting human dignity and rights. Although the development issues have originated from social teaching of local churches of Africa and Latin America, thanks to the social encyclicals it took on a global dimension. The social teaching of the Catholic church by indicating the need of the integral development of a human person and the whole mankind, points out the problems of material, spiritual poverty and violation of human rights. Therefore, the teaching about development is an integral element of the preferential option for the poor in the ministry of the Catholic church.

The Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World “Gaudium et Spes” says, “for man is the source, the center, and the purpose of all economic and social life” (63). Therefore, the man’s dignity has to be considered integrally in both his spiritual and bodily constitution and emphasized alongside his value and supernatural vocation. This enables attributing a special role to his transcendence in economic life. In their own productive activity, the possession and exchange of goods, a man should adhere to proper moral norms. However, what is observed is the incessant deepening of social inequalities in different parts of the earthly globe. Luxury accompanied by the wasting of goods adjoins indigence of people suffering a shortage of necessities. Thus it seems vital that economic institutions be established whose goal will be promoting good living conditions and an individual’s engagement in dignified economic activity and which will not destroy their human, moral and social dimension.

Opis:
Social economy and the Church's social teaching are joined not only by a similar object of interest, i. e. a common axiological foundation in the form of certain values and principles. It seems that the existence of such connections on the axiological level is not very well known, which can be proven, among others, by the fact that it is hard to find any studies or even mentions connected with it in the literature on the subject. Hence an attempt seems justified to look closely and to analyze this connection in order to indicate the details of mutual implications, and so to show the possibilities of mutual enriching these two domains of human reflection on social life. The article analyzes particular principles of social life that are preached by the Church as part of its social teaching, with respect to their presence or the necessity of considering them in social economy. First it points to (1) the source and foundation of all the social principles, which is the human person, and then it shows (2) the dignity of work and the call to be enterprising. Next, the following principles are analyzed: (3) the common good, the general allotment of goods and preferential option for the poor, and finally (4) solidarity, subsidiariness and participation.

Artykuł stanowi podsumowujące ujęcie stanowisk Kościoła katolickiego w stosunku do zagadnień etyki gospodarczej. Przedstawia zmieniające się od pierwszych stuleci naszej ery priorytety w pojmowaniu sytuacji człowieka gospodarującego, przechodząc od klasycznych średniowiecznych rozważań nad moralnym wydźwiękiem lichwy, bogactwa czy handlu poprzez wypływające z ustrojowo-gospodarczych przemian XIX i XX wieku refleksje nad własnością prywatną i wartością ludzkiej pracy, kończąc na problemach współczesnych. Część pierwsza omawia korzenie społecznej nauki Kościoła, które sięgają średniowiecznych pism św. Ambrożego i Św. Augustyna.
The article is a Abstract of opinions of the Catholic Church with regard to the question of business ethics. It is presenting a changing overview of priorities since the early Middle Ages, when the main concern was a problem of usury, richness or trade, through the turbulent times of XIX and XX century, where the main reflection was related to private ownership and value of human work, ending with the contemporary times. The first part discusses the roots of Catholic social teaching, which are dating back to the Middle Ages and writings of Saint Ambrosius and Augustine. The important contribution into social teaching were also the ideas of scholastics - Thomas Aquinas and the late Spanish scholastics. The second part of the paper refers to the classic period in Catholic social teaching, that means since the encyclical Rerum Novarum of the pope Leo XIII, till Laborem Exercens of John Paul II. Then, a short resume of contemporary teaching follows, which includes chosen encyclicals by John Paul II, published after 1989 and also dogmatic point of view of Catholic Church contained in the last edition of Catechism of Catholic.

Opis:
The feature of contemporary world is interdependence of both individuals and all societies. Therefore, there is demand for an attitude of solidarity in both domestic and international dimension. The subject matter of solidarity is an important issue in teaching of John Paul II. According to the Polish-Pope it is the rule of solidarity which is one of the foundations of Christian concept of social and political organization and peace around the world. Therefore, the Pope during his pontificate repeatedly appealed both for solidarity between countries and solidarity of individual societies with their neediest members – the homeless, the unemployed, the sick, the disabled, former prisoners etc. International and domestic solidarity is also present in Polish Constitution, which defines foundations of political, economic and social system of state. Polish Constitution, on the one hand, says about the need of cooperation of Polish nation with all countries to the good of humankind, and, on the other hand, defines the obligation of solidarity with others as an unshakeable foundation of Poland. This obligation concerns not only citizens but first and foremost all bodies of public authority. Constitutional rule of solidarity and social justice requires equality in material dimension, that is equalizing of chances of those members of society which for some reasons are in a worse social and economic situation. Therefore, Polish Constitution contains many regulations which oblige bodies of public authority to eliminate social inequalities. Nonetheless, when the state does not discharge of that obligation, individual legal claims don’t arise from these regulations. This is so because the realization of social justice, which is a sign of solidarity reigning in society, is no always possible in full extent.

Republicanism and communitarianism accept ideas of common good and social justice. The social teaching of the Church proposes a subsidiary state which is not a protective one. Contemporary popes – Pius XI (Quadragesimo anno), John XXIII (Mater et Magistra), Paul VI (Populorum progressio), John Paul II (Sollicitudo rei socialis, Centesimus annus) – postulate participation of the state in social justice. The main of its obligations are: protection and financial aid for key sectors of economic life (including agriculture), profamily policy, fighting against unemployment and providing fair salary, limited economic intervention (while respecting the rules of the free market economy at the same time), medical and social care.

Opis:
Tomasza z Akwinu, innych uczonych i papieży społeczników. Sobór Watykański II uczy, że własność prywatna przyczynia się do „podkreślenia roli osoby” i „daje każdemu przestrzeń koniecznie potrzebną dla autonomii osobistej i rodzinnej” (por. GS, nr 71). Kościół broni własności prywatnej, bo gwarantuje ona człowiekowi wolność i godność. I chociaż Kościół broni własności prywatnej, to nie zapomina, że jest ona obciążona „hipoteką społeczną”.
Property is a very wide term. It is the most extensive and basic human right, that allows the owner to use things and dispose of them with exclusion of other people. The Church opts for the private property. The social doctrine of the Church private property was always considered to be the best form of ownership. This was based on St. Thomas Aquinas teachings, who treated ownership as a rudimental factor of expressing individual freedom. He wrote in his Summa Theologica, that „everyone cares more about things, that belong to him, that for things that is common property for everyone or a group of people”. Leo XIII claimed, that „private possession of material goods is a natural human right” (RN, no. 4). Bl. Pope John XXIII said, that depriving of private possession would be a violation God’s and natural laws. (MM, no. 19; PT, no. 21). During Vaticanum II it was said, that private property – along with the ownership of means of production – contributes to „emphasize the meaning of person” and „gives everyone the needed space for personal and familial autonomy” (GS, no. 71). Pope John Paul II clearly states, that private property, having a personal character, is „basic for autonomy and development of human being” (CA, no. 30) Social Catholic Teaching leads the right for private property and using of material goods from biblical God’s order: „fill the earth and subdue it” (Gen 1,28) The Church defends private property, because it guarantees human freedom, and the freedom itself is the guarantee of human dignity. And though the Church defends private property – does not forget, that is carries a „social mortgage” along with it.
