    Opis:
    The article deals with the means of impacting on language policy. It is emphasised that national language policy does not always have the desired and planned results and these mistakes discredit the idea of a reasonable social influence on the language situation. It is proved that remaking language through force is a powerful means of forming social language awareness. The existence of dual standards in the language problem is described. Making use of successful international experience in language policy is proposed.

    The subject matter of this paper is the development of language awareness in the society in the context of the integration of diverse social classes in Poland in the period 1918–1939. This study covers several specifi c aspects: 1) language awareness of the Polish intelligentsia, 2) language integration of the Polish dialectal environments, 3) language integration of other nationalities, 4) role of the regionalistic movement and the Polish school in integrating the state. In the linguistic studies on the interwar period, the researchers have concentrated on the language used by the educated class and the Polish national identity, and – as emphasised by the author – not enough attention has been given to the evolution of the language awareness of the lower social class and the complicated language and national awareness in the borderline between ethnical groups. This paper briefl y discusses the source material, which could be used in further research: peasants’ diaries, Sejm records, linguistic and sociological studies from the interwar period.

    Celem artykułu jest definicyjne scharakteryzowanie świadomości językowej oraz określenie jej roli w kontekście gwary. Analizie poddano pojęcie świadomości językowej – zarówno w ujęciach słownikowych, jak i w pojawiających się na ten temat pracach językoznawczych. Podjęto próbę skonstruowania spójnej definicji omawianego terminu oraz przedstawiono socjologiczne podstawy zagadnienia, znajdując bezpośrednie odniesienie do współczesnych zachowań komunikacyjnych i problematyki gwary.
    The aim of this article is to provide a definitional characterization of linguistic awareness and to define its role in the context of dialect. The concept of linguistic awareness was analysed – both in dictionary terms and in linguistic works appearing on this subject. An attempt was made to construct a coherent definition of the discussed term and the sociological foundations of the issue were presented, finding a direct reference to contemporary communication behaviour and dialect issues.

    The aim of this paper is to present a theory of naive linguistics, which is a novelty in Polish linguistics. We make a critical review of the relevant literature by confronting the NL with theories of language awareness, attitudes towards language, and the theory of social representations. Our examples indicate that the expert thinking of language has not been popularised (the language policy problem) and the issues of naive thinking have not been described in detail (the methodological problem) to this date. This gap could be fi lled by this research, which aims, on the one hand, to thoroughly describe how naive linguistics comes into existence and functions and, on the one hand, to present such a picture of the actual social situation as would permit more effective political and linguistic activities. The value of the conducted research, apart from the strictly scientific, theoretical, dimension, is also utilitarian.
