Innovations are the base of the socio-economic development of companies and economies. Social innovations is one of their types. They focus on activities to improve the quality of life of specific social groups, by better solving problems and better meeting their needs. In creating social innovations, there is a need for cooperation between public, private and social actors. The business sector should play a key role here, especially family businesses that operate mainly on local markets and are “close” to their customer. With this “locality” they can better understand social needs and problems and create social innovations that can contribute to their development and competitiveness.

Every innovation has social dimension, because it engages social players and its users (societies) at time of forming. Innovations are inscribed into social change. “We cannot think separately about innovations (items, artefacts) and people. They are coupled with each other, and innovation does not have any objective power for changing common activities and effects, unless it is told in an attracting manner, it is explained, introduced into use” (Giza – Poleszczuk 2013, p. 70). Without philosophical and humanistic study on learning the directions of development for contemporary society, we would not be capable for proper assessment or even description of social and cultural changes in larger extent, in which innovation is only small fragment, but simultaneously a significant one. (cf. Beck 2002; Castells 2008; Florida 2010; Giddens 2001) (after Bukowski A., Rudnicki S., Strycharz J., 2012, p. 19). The papers cover the areas, such as social change, new innovation features and society’s openness to innovation.

Opis:
Social changes, needs of individuals and families, and escalating social problems trigger the necessity to seek innovative solutions that will bring social benefits more effectively and will meet the needs of people and solve social problems. Social innovation – new solutions, generated and implemented very often by the social sector entities – has become an expression of social responsibility and brings positive results at both micro- and macro-social level. The aim of this article is to present the model of social innovation management in which social sector, included the social economy entities, plays the central role. The article uses the method of desk research, with the analysis of EU documents, source materials and legal acts. The conduct research shows a variety of approaches to social innovation and their differences from other types of innovation. The specific lifecycle of social innovation requires a specific approach to social innovation management. In this context it should be noted that the social economy entities, which as structures are created voluntarily, from the bottom up and regardless of the public authorities, have great potential in the implementation of innovative solutions.

School bullying also referred to as peer victimization is considered extremely harmful for all parties involved. It has been recognised as an important issue in Polish schools. This article presents the first stage of a project financed by the National Centre of Research and Development and includes the results of qualitative research conducted in groups of middle-school students, middle-school teachers and psychologists. The results highlight several factors leading to the exclusion from the dominant peer group. The results also indicate that although students are aware of the consequences of bullying and excluding behaviours, they do not implement this knowledge when explaining their own excluding actions. All results are discussed in terms of designing and implementing a data-based programme which would effectively mitigate excluding behaviours during middle-school transition.

Opis:
In recent decades  in  the European Union’s development, strengthening  innovation has been viewed as  a desirable direction for further development  trends,  which can be seen as an opportunity to increase the EU’s global competitiveness. Achieving this goal will not be possible without taking into account the requirement of understanding innovation in the far broader context than the purely technological one. In recent years, social innovation boldly entered into the mainstream debate on public management, public governance and public policy. Its popularity  is due  to  the complex changes taking place in the model of development of states, societies and economies. Social innovations are a part of multidimensional  thinking about  the ongoing social changes taking place in a globalised society and have led to the creation of flexible solutions with a high potential for adaptation and modernization.  The aim of the paper  is to  introduce the phenomenon of social innovation, including in the light of other innovation’s concepts, as a chance to increase the innovation potential of the European Union  in relation to global competition. An  important element that needs to be considered is the importance of the role of public policy in shaping and creating space for social innovation. The main intention is to point out the basic directions of European Union’s activities while strenghtening social innovation planned for the coming years, the implementation of which may be an answer to the global challenges of development.

The paper analyses the subject of change processes at universities. The main thesis concerns the concept that changes at universities are triggered by social innovations. The author explores the problem of the changing paradigm of universities' role from the concept of purely scientific institution to a university which commercializes its scientific results, tracing its origins as related with social networks. In this context, the term of social innovation is defined in the perspective of its receivers. The paper shows examples of social innovations in relationships between universities and external actors: case studies of ISIS Innovation in Oxford and TuTech in Hamburg, as well as the concept of clusters as the most developed form of social networks with active participation from universities so far. The author analyses how the idea of change may contribute to universities' development. The text includes conclusions accentuating the value of regular social innovation in universities' organization and that social innovations are always generated by specific individuals.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to provide insights into the views of SE and SI experts from different settings on university education in these two fields. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: SEE 1 has been gaining significant interest following development of the research field. However, literature is scarce in this area, and the empirical work on SEE is almost nonexistent. The research is based on the SE and SI ecosystem development projects run by two neighbouring cities in Poland. Using inductive approach, the author presents qualitative data from group discussions and semi-structured interviews among experts from different settings. Grounded theory methods are used to generate key categories representing direction for SEE and SIE development. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: Based on review of literature and analysis of gathered data, the author provides key guiding directions for SEE and SIE development. First, their main features emerging from literature are presented. Next, the research design and key findings are presented. RESEARCH RESULTS: Research results indicate the need for encompassing approach when designing key directions for SE and SI education. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The findings show that SEE should be extended beyond business school environment. Also, educational model should be constantly refined in response to stakeholders’ needs, also academia should include community and other stakeholders, also from other fields and disciplines. The engaging approach in educational setting draws attention to university contexts, expose SEE to local problems and construct them accordingly. Also, SEE requires significant efforts in promoting SE phenomenon and the education itself, to gain legitimacy and engage dedicated individuals and organizations.

Opis:
Nowadays, small and medium-sized enterprises (further SME) look for ways to overcome pressing social problems. An open-software-based application can be considered a powerful tool for this task, because of functionalities such as data management, BI operation, and efficient channels of communication. A review of literature shows that there is a shortage of studies concerning connections between usage of Free/Libre or Open Source Software (further FLOSS) and implementing Social Innovation (SI). The aim of this research is to investigate how the use of FLOSS relates to the ability of SMEs to implement SI. The author aims to underline key areas in which FLOSS supported implementation of SI. A set of recommendations for future initiatives is created based on the experience of successful implementation. Based on a review of literature, the author created a set of hypotheses which are validated by the in-depth surveys with three companies in the SME sector. The article structure is as follows: first the author presents literature findings concerning the subject, and next the areas of the model and survey answers. Finally, the author performs a critical review of the model, confirming that open software can stimulate the process of developing social innovation in SMEs, especially in cost reduction, flexibility, and community support.
