Opis:
This article presents a formalized field theory of international migration. Departing from the theories of Kurt Lewin, the author assumes that the valences of different migration targets create a field of attracting forces, which may trigger long-range “locomotions.” Moreover, the author hypothesizes that the selection among the different migration targets also depends on the perceived opportunities: the higher the number of vacancies at a target and the stronger the reporting about these vacancies by earlier migrants, the stronger the field of perceived opportunities. A mathematical model based on these theoretical assumptions is tested with data about migration from Poland to other EU countries. The goodness of fit of the model is quite high and seems to corroborate its field theoretical foundations. The model is further explored by simulating its behavior for different scenarios of valences and perceived opportunities. The article finishes with a summary from the perspective of analytical sociology.

Opis:
People tend to perceive value of their attributes and objects they possess in relative terms, i.e. based on social comparisons. These comparisons shape consumers’ behavior as well as their aspirations, lifestyle, self-esteem and happiness. The aim of the paper was to establish the role of social comparisons in shaping consumers’ behavior and to identify comparative reference groups, in the light of literature and primary research results. The data confim that Polish consumers engage in social comparisons, and some of them do it regularly. Small but signifiant fraction of consumers use effects of comparisons, i.e. knowledge of consumption patterns realized by peer and aspirational groups, while shaping their current and futureconsumption

Opis:
To investigate the role of academic achievement in the reasons for participation in and/or avoidance of competition more clearly, the presented research was aimed at assessing the role of the discrepancy between objective evaluations and subjective self-evaluations of academic performance in secondary school students. The differences between under-raters, accurate raters, and over-raters in their reasons for participation in and/or avoidance of competition were investigated. The study comprised 534 secondary school students. The results do not clearly indicate possible benefits of the positive bias; we found that under-rating may have some advantages in the sense of mastery orientation and self-improvement motives (upward comparison) in competitive situations. Concerning other reasons for participation in competition, as well as reasons for avoiding it, students were found to rely more on teachers’ objective measure of academic performance than on the (in)accurate aspect of social comparison information.

Paper  focuses  on  civic  participation  and  its  disadvantaged  factors  in  civil  society  and  democratic life  in  new  democracies,  especially  after  long-term  deprivation  of  political  freedom.  I emphasize the  experiences  of  Central  and  Eastern  European  countries  or  the  post-communist  countries,  especially  the  Czech  case,  and  make  a comparison  with  Taiwan.  The  disadvantaged  factors  in  this  paper  at  least  involve  social  indifference,  corruption,  powerless  for  the  politics  and  no  trust  for  governments  and  the  general  society.  The  factors  of  development  in  politics  and  the  economy  do not  necessarily  guarantee  the  participation  in  civic  participation,  which  is  regarded  as  a prominent  component  of  civil  society  and  democracy.  There  are  still  many  other  factors  that  influence  the  consolidation  of  civil  society  and  democracy  in  the  new  democracies,  and  the  legacy  of  prior  regimes  is  one  of  the  most  decisive.  Due  to  the  degree  of  overall  political  and  social  control  during  the  period  of  authoritarian  or  communist  regimes,  people  removed  themselves  from  politics,  so  their  trust  in  politics  is  diminished.  When  confronting  the  bureaucratic  system,  people  become  powerless,  or  unwilling  to  concern  themselves  with  politics.  Therefore,  the  legacy  of  prior  regimes,  both  authoritarian and  communist,  consists  of  political  distrust,  a sense  of  powerlessness  and  political  indifference.  During  the  period  of  democratization,  corruption  is  also  a serious  problem,  and  corruption  often  brings  about  further  political  distrust  and  apathy  toward  politics.  Research  instruments  involve  international  surveys  including  ISSP  Citizenship  2004,  Taiwan  and  Czech  domestic  election  records  and  some  other  surveys  like  CVVM  in  the  Czech  Republic. The  examination  of  the  Taiwan  and  Czech  cases  confirms  the  negative  correlation  between  the  effects  of  prior-regime  legacy  and  civic  participation.  Those  who  have  high  levels  of  political  distrust,  sense  of  powerlessness,  and  political  indifference  are  more  unwilling  to  participate  in  civic  associations  and  actions  to  express  social  and  political  concerns,  and  tend  to  shy  away  from  civic  participation.

Opis:
This article presents the international and domestic diversification of tourist activity. In the former case, it focuses on analyses of the general level of tourist activity, expressed in the ‘tourist activity rate’, while with regards to the inhabitants of Poland, analyses were conducted on the diversification of tourist activity across various socio-demographic categories. For international comparisons, the wide-ranging research conducted by EUROSTAT in 2011 on representative samples of the inhabitants of 32 European countries was used. The diversification of Polish tourist activity in the context of social exclusion, on the other hand, is presented on the basis of the author's research and calculations. Statistical analyses were employed: Kendall's Tau-b rank correlation coefficient and cluster analysis.

Opis:
Social comparisons, seeing oneself in relation to others, are universal, common, and perhaps even necessary. In a study of parents of deaf children, intense, open, and mutual examinations were voiced in parental groups, meetings between parents and professionals, and interviews. These comparisons were generated in a specific situation created by successful claims for separate milieus advocated by the Deaf movement. The local culture, “the deaf world,” was characterized by close proximity and a highly charged ideological moral climate. With the central argument that strong integration breeds comparisons and examinations, we conclude that the integration of parents creates a situation perfect for drawing comparisons, creating not only cohesion, but also renewed separatist distinctions, expressed in terms of moral examinations, competition and envy. Studying the content and details of comparisons in any given field makes the particular morality that is bred, fed, and elaborated obvious.
