This study explores developments in Latvian broadcast media during the period known as the “awakening” that led up to the re-establishment of independence. It pays particular attention to the celebrated television program Labvakar (Good Evening). It argues that pre-existing patterns of political communication persisted through the period showing that while media practices and content were the product of social agency emanating from an elite group of intelligentsia and politicians, broadcasting was less successful at generating social agency at the grassroots, a precondition for and ideal of effective civic and public service communication.

The article aims to show the informal family support networks during the pandemic and their durability in the post-pandemic period. The empirical basis of the article is the authors’ research, conducted in late November and early December 2022, on a sample of 548 respondents. The research diagnosed the factors determining participation in support networks in crisis settings and the durability of new forms of network cooperation. The study used the diagnostic survey method. The collected data were analysed using Statistica 8.0. Central tendency measures were carried out, and differences between the arithmetic means of the examined features and factor analysis were determined. On its basis, a measurement model of factors determining participation in the support network and its durability was constructed.

Article attempts to discuss the significance of individual consciousness, people’s motivation to pursuit their ends and the extent of their freedom from exterior influences, while focusing on relationship between migration processes and belongings among diasporic groups. It draws on insight from the indepth interviews with migrants who are a part of Slovene and Irish transnational diaspora, and thus aims to represent certain transformations in social reality embraced by the ideas of individualisation, while being simultaneously aware of particular weaknesses of those ideas. The focus is on their conceptualisations and perceptions of home, as a useful concept in considering individualisation that undermines the traditional meanings of tradition, family relations, ethnical and national belongings. What seems to be important is that in the era of increased individualisation, traditional social categories remain salient although contested and social forces still represent influential components inmigrants’ negotiation of the selves and the others. The conceptual lens, which could capture the contested relation between agency and structure in migrants’ live, is that of transnational social fields.

Opis:
This study contributes to the ongoing research on CSR valuation and the emergence of indices associated with socially responsible investments (SRI) and corporate social responsibility. Valuation played an important role in the creation of business criteria for investing in the companies listed in the Respect Index of the Warsaw Stock Exchange. The study reveals how responsibility has been transformed into liquidity criteria that ground the Index’s performance. Despite standardization in CSR reporting, the most recognized discourse on the legitimacy of CSR has revealed a diversity of justifications for the meaning companies declare and pursue. Thus, there are parallel practices of CSR valuation: reports demonstrate a diversity of values and their justification while the index enhances the drive for the business case in CSR policies. Despite these differences, the research reveals the power of numbers: quantifications that describe specific CSR activities simultaneously eliminate a company’s issues and challenges. Given that CSR activities are amorphous in nature, the quantification and collection of data in their regard does not mean that the activities and their reporting address the major challenges companies face nor claims articulated in their environment.

Opis:
The process of social remitting is complex and multilayered, and involves numerous social actors that at each stage face several choices. By definition, the process of socially remitting ideas, codes of behaviour and practices starts with the migrants themselves and their social context in the destination country. This paper focuses on the as yet unexplored issue of resistance performed and articulated by migrants confronted with potential change influenced by social remittances and the generalised process of diffusion. Faithful to the understanding of social remittances as ultimately a process where individual agency is the crucial determinant, the article follows the ideas, practices and values travelling across the transnational social field between Britain and various localities in Poland. Resistance to change and new ways of doing things is a continuous dialogical process within one culture’s power field, which is understood here in anthropological terms as a porous, open-ended field of competing meanings and discourses. Notions of bifocality, infra-politics of power relations and resistance are an important aspect of remittances and their reinterpretations, and resistance to social remittances by migrants, both in their destinations and in their communities of origin, is a crucial component of the whole process without which our understanding of remittances is incomplete.

Feelings-as-information theory states that feelings inform us about the nature of our current situation and we rely on them to make our judgments. Beyond that, feelings tune our cognitive processes to meet situational requirements. Positive feelings result in relying on pre-existing knowledge structures and default strategies, whereas negative feelings hamper relying on routines and results in adapting systematic processing. Based on this premise, it was hypothesized that positive mood, elicited either by the perceived target or by the independent source, would lead to relying on accessible agentic or communal content in perceiving strangers, as well as familiar others, whereas negative mood would weaken these tendencies. Specifically, the three studies showed initial evidence that (a) positive mood leads to focusing on agencyrelated qualities in perception of unknown men to a greater extent than negative mood, (b) positive mood leads to focusing on communion-related qualities in perception of unknown women more than negative mood, and(c) positive mood leads to relying on communal content in perception of familiar others comparing to negative mood.

The social activity of young people is essential for the development of their participation in the social life. It’s conditioned, inter alia, by educational measures directed at stimulating the behaviour of the young people, strengthening their sense of consciousness and responsible influence on the environment. The article presents a deeper insight into the mutual dependence between the individual’s sense of agency (and thus the subject’s belief in his/her ability to influence the reality) and his social activity (understood as the readiness to act for the benefit of others). They are not meaningless for building the social capital of the young generation, which in the near future will be responsible for the fate of the world. One of the analytic categories used to consider the presented issues is the construct of pro-development orientation, the constructive features of which include both trust in others and the world, as well as a sense of agency.

In theMestizo and urban cultures of contemporary Mexico, motherhood is a site of confrontation of various gender (hegemonic, subordinate and alternative) images, practices and discourses. The local pattern of motherhood is undergoing social change, determined by traditional gender ideology, the government’s modernization policy, and the agency of ordinary men and women. This text is based on a field study which I conducted in a district of Mexico City in 2005/2006. I analyze the process of reconstruction of official motherhood ideology and mothering practices on three levels: the official cult of motherhood and state activity, local celebrations of Mother’s Day in the studied community, and women’s individual strategies. These strategies are expressed in the adaptation of the baby shower, an American custom, to local conditions. This adaptation has led to the development of a hybrid cultural form. It is also the site of women’s resistance to the state-supported, hegemonic cult of motherhood.

In most individualistic cultures, pride is regarded as a positive emotion that follows a positive evaluation of one’s competence or effort when achieving a goal. Fredrickson (2001) suggests that pride may expand individuals’ scope of attention and broaden their action repertoires by driving them toward greater achievements in the future. In the present study, we show that proud individuals may search for greater achievements by stronger willingness to cooperate with agentic though immoral individuals. We demonstrate that proud participants in comparison to participants in the control condition rely to a higher degree on information on agency and respect, and less on information on morality and liking of their potential partners of cooperation.

Two experiments probed the role of strategies used in social conflicts on perception of agency and communion. In study 1, persons who revealed prosocial orientation were perceived as less agentic, but more communal than those who revealed competitive orientation. In study 2 these findings were replicated in the context of organizational conflict, those who decided to use confrontational strategies were also perceived as more agentic, although less communal than these who used cooperative strategies. In line with the theory of power effects on objectification of social targets, the perceived agency and communion were differently linked to superior’s and subordinate’s evaluation. While perceived agency predicted the subordinate’s evaluation, perceived communion predicted superior’s evaluation, but not the other way round. Moreover, perception of communion (but not agency) mediated the negative effect of confrontational strategies on supervisor’s evaluation. On the other hand, perceived agency suppressed the effect of strategies on subordinate’s evaluation.

In this article I analyze discursive practices that serve to reproduce models of femininity and that are adopted by lay women employed in central Church organizations, including in diocesan chanceries and ecclesiastical courts. The key discursive practice is dissociation, which excludes women from various institutional orders of the Roman Catholic Church in Poland, keeping them in their place in the hierarchy, and sanctioning non-normative gender models. Drawing on integration theories of gender and new institutionalism in sociology, I depart in this article from individualist and identity views of gender. I consider this category as a social institution, that is, as the social rules, both formal and informal, that restrict and liberate human action and are reproduced and transformed in social practices as a result of human agency. My article is based on 31 in-depth interviews which I conducted with lay women working in administrative and evangelizing organizations of the Church in Poland.

According to the self-expansion model, people are motivated to increase their sense of personal agency by expanding their sense of self through the acquisition of new identities. We conducted two studies to explore whether the feeling of self-expansion, resulting from multiple group memberships, is related to self-efficacy, and to test whether agentic and communal self-stereotyping mediated this relation. In Study 1 conducted in Poland (N1 = 102), and Study 2 among undergraduate students from Poland, Spain, and Sweden (N2 = 450), a significant indirect effect of self-expansion on self-efficacy through agentic (but not communal) self-stereotyping emerged.

Their content concerning accommodation in Wrocław was analysed and compared to the official tourist statistics provided by both the Central Statistical Office of Poland, and the Central Register of Hotels and Similar Establishments published by the Ministry of Sport and Tourism. The article aims at an evaluation of the reliability and completeness of the information provided over the internet: firstly from the point of view of a potential customer, secondly for its value for market research purposes. Although electronic word-of-mouth websites are designed both for consumers and suppliers, from a methodological perspective the article is based on a content analysis of tourism social media. The study also contributes to both academic research and the tourism industry by identifying some gaps in existing work and providing an agenda for the future.

This article attempts to answer the question why is it worth to exhibit the category of agency in the legal practice. Answering the question I started my discussion from the presentation ideas related to the issue of the social role of the lawyers. In the completion of this objective, I discussed three ideas: moral responsibility, trust and subjective agency. Putting forward the role of the lawyer, I paid attention to the relationship between the notion of trust in the lawyer’s role and moral responsibility. This relationship is based on an ethical link, which is founded on a kind of obligation. This idea can be demonstrated by looking into confidence in the lawyer’s role as a special form of obligation to consider individual, institutional and social arguments. In the presented approach the state of limbo between the individual dimension, which focuses on the relationship between a specific individual and their rights, and the public dimension, where attention is paid to institutional and social arguments, is a characteristic feature of the professional role of a lawyer. The shaping of a professional role in a subjective and structural authorship is based on the idea of a two-way movement. It consists in highlighting the institutional structure with simultaneous reinforcement of the role of the subject who acts within it.

The paper deals with the so-called transformational theory of social class put forward by the Dutch sociologist Albert Benschop. The paper offers a thorough, critical, but sympathetic analysis of the aformentioned framework. While its undisputable merit lies in its tackling head on a difficult and-for ideological reasons-often avoided by other theorist subject, Benschop nevertheless cannot but share many misunderstandings present in the conventional literature on class. The author of the paper seeks to provide his own solutions to the problems under consideration, such as that of the dilemma of structure vs. agency.
