The closest family is the most natural support group for seniors. Consequently close family members seem to play an important preventive role in the context of social exclusion of older people. Although the activity of seniors in the area of family, their involvement in family life and giving care to their grandchildren can be a burden, these elements are the important parts of the elderly people’s identity, give a sense of social belonging and promote the process of successful aging. The main aim of this article is to present the results of research into the seniors’ involvement in family life, a kind of support which grandparents give to their families and the meaning which grandparents give to caring for grandchildren. The results of the research indicate that maternal grandmothers have more forms of activities with their grandchildren and forms of assistance in the care of grandchildren than maternal grandfathers and grandparents from father side. In addition, results show that both for grandmothers and grandfathers involvement in the care of grandchildren is an important part of life and that the relationships with grandchildren enrich seniors’ existence. Involvement in the care of grandchildren is equated with a goal in life to a greater extent by the retired grandparents in comparison to the grandmothers and grandfathers professionally active.

The study evaluated the effectiveness of the intervention for families raising children with autism aimed to improve the family’s quality of life, strengthen its capacity, and expand rights and opportunities. The experimental intervention was implemented at the Educational and Rehabilitation Center for Children with Autism “Trust” (Lviv, Ukraine). It had one experimental group (30 people) and two control groups (60 people). The effectiveness and duration of the intervention effects were assessed using a before/after study design with the same questionnaire. Findings from the survey evidence the effectiveness of the intervention, in particular, for expanding the family’s capabilities, its capacity, improving relationships in family subsystems, increasing parental competence, and improving well-being. Limitations of the intervention are discussed.

Artykuł prezentuje koncepcję „małych rewitalizacji podwórek” opisującą proces trójstronnego (studenci, młodzi mieszkańców miejskich zubożałych sąsiedztw, akademicy) współtworzenia przestrzeni miejsca życia. Powstała ona w efekcie teoretyzacji partycypacyjnego badania-działania (PAR). W jej genezie uwidacznia się związek prac teoretycznych z klinicznym praktykowaniem i edukacją akademicką, tak charakterystyczny dla działań teoriotwórczych w łódzkim modelu rozwoju pracy społecznej. Artykuł wzbogaca dyskurs naukowy w jego dwóch obszarach. Pierwszym jest konceptualny wymiar pedagogiki społecznej – jednej z dyscyplin naukowych orientujących działania w pracy socjalnej. Drugim jest dyskurs praktyki. Koncepcja „małych rewitalizacji podwórek” zarysowuje bowiem pewien model pracy środowiskowej, stąd jest głosem w dyskusji na temat roli pracowników społecznych w przebiegu zmian urbanistycznych. Podnosi kwestię znaczenia perspektywy społeczno-edukacyjnej we współczesnych procesach rewitalizacji miast w Polsce.
The article aims to present the concept of “micro-scale revitalization of backyards” which captures the process of a tripartite (students; young residents of urban disadvantaged neighbourhoods; academics) co-creation of living space. It has been developed in a result of Participatory Action-Research (PAR). Its genesis reveals the relationship between theoretical work and clinical practice and academic education, so characteristic of theoretical activities in the Lodz model of social work development. The article adds to the scientific discourse in at least two areas. The first is the conceptual dimension of social pedagogy – one of the disciplines orienting activities social work. The second is the discourse of practice. The concept of the “macro-scale revitalization of backyards” outlines a certain model of community work, hence it is a voice in the discussion on the role of social workers in the course of urban development. It raises the issue of the importance of the socio-educational perspective in contemporary urban revitalisation processes in Poland.

The sexual economy prevalent within universities, as well as how young people perceive, interpret, and experience their sexuality, present complex dynamics, which, if not handled with great emotional intelligence, may disrupt their educational aspirations. This paper investigates the psycho-social implications of “semester marriages” within institutions of higher learning. Guided by principles of the qualitative approach and the theory of planned action, the paper disinterred that students experienced intense regret and guilt as a result of backstreet abortions. Soul-tie complications emanating from sharing the “wife-husband” bond also made it difficult for some students to move on after a breakup, leading to disruptions in their educational focus. In extreme cases, such an inability to deal with the adverse effects of “semester marriages” culminated in crimes of passion. The paper desists from pathologizing the “semester marriages” phenomenon and advocates for the strengthening of psycho-social support modalities within university settings to increase the accessibility and visibility of therapeutic services through a school social work model. Furthermore, universities, in partnership with other relevant stakeholders, are urged to prioritize sexual and reproductive education and services among the youth as provided for in the Constitution of Zimbabwe of 2013 to impart life skills that can equip students to make informed sexual and reproductive decisions.

The paper is a sociological commentary on work made during translation of scientific texts, in this case, some sociological texts (mainly books). It is based on the empirical research on 'translation work'. The interpretive perspective comes from the foregoing subdisciplines of sociology: sociology of work and sociology of management. These subdisciplines seem to be helpful in analysis of translations and may inspire the sociology of translation. The main goal of the paper is to show intersubjectivity problem in the systems of decisions made during translations and work on scientific translations in Poland. These decisions have often got an ad hoc character and are often based on business, not academic, criterions (lack of scientific editors of translations or editors/translators are chosen according to the financial criterion not the competence one). The decisions of choosing the scientific editors are also based on criterion of the editor's position in the hierarchy of academic-social-world and on basic and tacit assumptions regarding high qualifications and the expertise of editors (or sometimes translators) with academic titles. However, it does not protect us against the errors in translations and even could constitute the cause of generating errors. There is a lack of discussions on what should be translated, and how should be translated. The decisions and work on translations are closed in a certain 'square' of decisions (publisher, scientific editor, translator, author of original text) to which the academic world and experts in a particular subdiscipline have no access. Probably this problem concerns not only translations of sociological books but is also present in other disciplines. The texts recipients are ignored in the system of translation decisions. 'The closed translation square' (publisher, editor, translator, possibly author of original text) creates the other side as a 'square of reception'. The closed circle of readers is left without any knowledge about quality of translations, or without the communication channels that would allow any expression of their dissatisfaction or an intellectual and linguistic disagreement regarding some aspects of texts' translation. Both the translations' politics, and the lack of authentic scientific discussion during the translation of sociological texts process create the divisions inside the academic world that constantly reproduce and create the increase of poor sociological texts translations' quality. Creation of a platform for the discussion on the aforementioned topics can improve greater responsibility of the subjects participating in the translation's process, improve the quality of translation, and finally open the 'translation square'. Open Access translating projects realized on the on-line journals' websites could be some remedy to the 'squarness of translation' which by making the process of translation more open, could turn it into an intersubjective endeavour in the academic world.

The goal of this article is to sum up the past hundred years of the social security system in Poland, starting with establishment thereof as Poland regained statehood in 1918. The changes which occurred in that time have been divided into three subsequent stages of the history of the Polish social security system. The first was the Interwar period when efforts were made to establish a social security system in independent Poland, in areas formerly divided between Austria, Prussia and Russia with extreme systems of social security. The next period was the Polish People’s Republic (1944–1989) when the communist authorities dismantled the pre-war social security system based on cooperation between state-owned and social organisations and the Church, replacing it with inefficient structures interested only in selected social groups in need. On the other hand, the third stage, commenced in 1989, of reconstructing social security, at first offered social protection for individuals affected by the system transformation. The last dozen or so years of development of social security is characterised by increasingly visible stimulation of social and economic growth to activate people from the fringes of the society.

This article is a continuation of deliberations on the identity and history of Polish social services. In Particular, it refers to the issues of the origins and beginnings of the formation of the educational system of social workers. Memory of the beginnings is an essential element of thinking about the future in the present. Creating solutions for the future, without respect for the achievements of the past, carries a number of risks of errors, which is the experience of past generations. It also allows the risk of abandonment of effective solutions in the development, which are becoming specific to native, cultural, or psychological factors. History is, in fact, a perfect teacher for contemporary activists involved in the fields of practice and theory.

O presente artigo objetiva problematizar a configuração da proteção social brasileira, bem como seus efeitos no trabalho em serviços no contexto pandêmico. Enquanto procedimentos metodológicos, prezou-se pela abordagem qualitativa, com o uso de recursos quantitativos. Além da revisão de literatura que subsidiou as reflexões, também foi utilizado como instrumento de coleta de dados um questionário eletrônico direcionado a assistentes sociais brasileiros em exercício no contexto de pandemia, do qual obtivemos 201 retornos, com respostas das cinco regiões brasileiras (Norte, Nordeste, Sul, Sudeste e Centro Oeste). As problematizações expostas indicam um aprofundamento das ofensivas ao sistema de proteção social brasileiro no contexto pandêmico, as quais ampliam desigualdades, precarizam o trabalho e destituem direitos. Do ponto de vista deste estudo, apontam-se para o seu aprofundamento a intensificação e a individualização no trabalho em serviços.
This article aims to problematize contemporary Brazilian social policy in the pandemic context, as well as its effects on work in services. As methodological procedures, the qualitative approach was valued, with the use of quantitative resources. In addition to the literature review that supported the reflections, an electronic questionnaire directed to Brazilian social workers in the context of a pandemic was also used as a data collection instrument, from which we obtained 201 returns, with responses from the five Brazilian regions (North, Northeast , South, Southeast and Midwest). The problematizations exposed indicate a deepening of the offensives to the Brazilian social protection system in the pandemic context, which increase inequalities, make work precarious and deprive rights. From the point of view of this study, the intensification and individualization of work in services are pointed out for its deepening.

The adoption of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) underlines the status of inclusion as a human right. In this context, inclusion means being involved in society, and people being acknowledged whatever their abilities and needs. The article gives an insight into the international debate on inclusion, and the discussion and state of implementation in Germany. It advocates a relational concept of inclusion making use of an “agency-vulnerability nexus”. Just like the human rights understanding of inclusion, relational theories of agency and vulnerability examine the processes in social environments which enable or hinder agency. They focus on professional practice, the organisational structures of social services, political conditions and social discourse (for example on disability or refugeeism) and how they are relevant to subjective scopes of action. A perspective of this kind has inherent potential with regard to social criticism, and this is indispensable for a debate which understands inclusion as a task to be tackled by society as a whole.

Biographical interviewing is used not only in research but also in clinical work such as social work practice. However, as social work settings differ from research settings, the ways of doing, analyzing, and using biographical interviews will differ. The differences arise from the reasons for and the purposes of the interview, the institutional context, the relationship between interviewer and interviewee, interviewees’ capacity for storytelling and reflective work, time limits, the structure of the biographical interview, and follow-up interviewing. In social work, interviewees are in a more vulnerable position than in research, and there is a stronger power imbalance. The service users’ expectations are essential for the work, and it is important that the users articulate their expectations because the purpose of social work is to change and improve the life situation of service users. This asks for ethical considerations that are partly different from those necessary in research. The biographical interview with Natalia is here analyzed using the strengths perspective as the social work theoretical framework. The analysis shows that in her present life Natalia has many strengths and resources, which, in a social work situation, could be mobilized to support her in getting more control over her life. Her perceived strengths are: her capacity for storytelling and reflection; her emotional and cognitive capacities; her willpower; and her capacity for enjoying her present life and planning for her future. Resources identified are: her significant others; her economic situation; her satisfying job situation; her capacity to have dreams for the future; and her religion. Implications for social work, both in the past and in the present, are discussed.

Multidisciplinary approach and co-operation with professionals in other fields are essential points for a social worker to understand and solve properly the problem, how much human problems are hardly to categorize and in many cases appear collectively. Since the social worker holds the position of a counselor in fact in every problematic case, social counseling is his most applied professional field within counseling. Common attribute of social work and special pedagogy as auxiliary science is the role of solving problems and aiming changes in the counseling. Wstęp: Celem analizy jest określenie wielkości i przyczyn chorobowych czasowej niezdolności do pracy w Polsce, wskazanie zmian poziomu absencji chorobowej oraz jej zróżnicowania ze względu na rodzaje działalności w gospodarce i regiony kraju. Materiał i metody: Podstawę opracowania stanowiły publikowane przez Zakład Ubezpieczeń Społecznych dane o absencji chorobowej za okres 2006-2012, których źródłem jest zaświadczenie lekarskie o czasowej niezdolności do pracy. Absencję scharakteryzowano za pomocą liczby dni niezdolności do pracy w stosunku do liczby osób pracujących lub ubezpieczonych. Wyniki: W 2012 r. liczba dni niezdolności do pracy przypadająca na 1 osobę pracującą wynosiła 14,5 dnia (12,1 dla mężczyzn, 17,4 dla kobiet), co oznacza 3,98% czasu straconego z powodu choroby. Głównymi przyczynami absencji były: powikłania ciąży i schorzenia matki w czasie ciąży (stanowiące 33% absencji kobiet), urazy i zatrucia (24% absencji mężczyzn, 8% absencji kobiet), choroby układu kostno-stawowego (17% absencji mężczyzn, 11% absencji kobiet). Najwyższy poziom absencji chorobowej wystąpił w województwach: łódzkim, śląskim i warmińsko-mazurskim (38-19% wyższy od krajowego) oraz w sekcjach gospodarki narodowej - w działalności w zakresie usług administrowania i działalności wspierającej (22,2 dnia na 1 osobę pracującą). Wnioski: Wysoki przyrost absencji w ciągu ostatnich 7 lat - dotyczący takich schorzeń, jak nowotwory, zaburzenia psychiczne, choroby układu kostno-mięśniowego - może stanowić istotny czynnik oceny wczesnego ryzyka trwałej niezdolności do pracy. Odrębny, niezwykle istotny problem stanowi absencja kobiet spowodowana powikłaniami ciąży oraz chorobami matki w okresie ciąży. Med. Pr. 2014;65(1):73–84
Background: The aim of the analysis was to determine the magnitude and causes of the sickness-related temporary incapacity for work in Poland, and to identify changes in sickness absence and its differences by the type of economic activity and region. Material and Methods: This analysis is based on the 2006-2012 data on sickness absence compiled from medical certificates of temporary incapacity for work and published by the Social Insurance Institution (Zakład Ubezpieczeń Społecznych). The sickness absence is described in terms of the number of sick leave days relative to the number of the employed or insured people. Results: In 2012, the number of days of disability per one employed was 14.5 (12.1 men, 17.4 women), representing 3.98% of the time lost due to illness. The main causes of absence were: complications of pregnancy and mother's diseases during pregnancy (33% of the sick leave days in women), injury and poisoning (men: 24%; women: 8%), diseases of the musculoskeletal system (men: 17%; woman: 11%). The highest level of sickness absence was noted in the łódzkie, śląskie and warmińsko-mazurskie provinces (38-19% higher than nationwide) and in the administrative and support sectors (22.2 days per 1 employee), when analyzed by sectors of the national economy. Conclusions: The high increase in sickness absence over the recent 7 years due to cancer, mental and muscloskeletal disorders may be an important risk factor for early assessment of permanent incapacity for work. Another major problem is female sickness absence due to pregnancy complications and mother's diseases during pregnancy. Med Pr 2014;65(1):73–84
