Opis:: The molluscicidal activity of six monoterpenes and two phenylpropenes against Theba pisana adults was evaluated using fumigation and direct contact methods. In the fumigant toxicity assay, (-)-citronellal showed the highest toxicity with LC50 value of 7.79 µl · l−1 air after 24 h of treatment, followed by (-)-terpinen-4-ol (LC50 = 12.06 µl · l−1), (-)-menthone (LC50 = 12.28 µl · l−1 air) and p-cymene (LC50 = 16.07 µl · l−1 air). Eugenol and trans-cinnamaldehyde were the most potent contact toxicants against T. pisana. Their LD50 values were 0.18 and 0.29 mg · snail−1 after 24 h of treatment, respectively. These two compounds were more toxic than a reference molluscicide, methomyl. In contrast, α-terpinene and (-)-citronellal were the least toxic compounds. In another experiment, the synergistic effect of piperonyl butoxide (PBO) on tested monoterpenes and phenylpropenes by topical application was examined. The results showed that the toxicity of the tested compounds was increased when mixed with PBO at a ratio [compound/PBO (1 : 2)] except for α-pinene and (-)-terpinen-4-ol in which the toxicity of binary mixtures was less than for single compounds. The synergistic effect of PBO improved with increased exposure time. The highest synergistic effect was observed with (-)-menthone and α-terpinene with synergistic ratios of 9.25 and 4.37, respectively. Monoterpenes and phenylpropenes and their mixtures with PBO described herein merit further studies as potential T. pisana control agents.

Opis:: The list of freshwater gastropods of Bulgaria, with data on their distribution, ecology and conservation status, was based on a critical overview of all available sources and unpublished materials. The total number of freshwater snail species hitherto recorded from Bulgaria is 120. Three species are regarded as extinct, two species were found only as subfossil remains. The most diverse families are Hydrobiidae (67 species), Planorbidae (15), and Lymnaeidae (11). The remaining families are represented by 1 to 4 species. Zoogeographical, ecological and conservation data are discussed.

Opis:: Effectiveness of several kinds of beer and molluscicides in gastropod control was tested in a 15-week experiment in an allotment garden, using plants of Callistephus chinensis. Among the total of 462 gastropods trapped during the observation period, 98.1% were slugs; the greatest number of gastropods was trapped in July, in the first week of the experiment. The most effective baits were beer Żubr (25.5% of all trapped gastropods), Mesurol SK 04 GB (14.5%) and beer Żywiec Porter (13.2%). The degree of plant damage dependend negatively on the number of trapped gastropods, suggesting a possibility of slug control in allotments by means of various kinds of baits.

Opis:: Small round holes in the tests of fossil echinoids present problems of interpretation, the most obvious questions being who did it and why? Both have been the cause of considerable conjecture by ichnologists and echinoderm palaeontologists. “Drill holes” described from the Miocene of Poland in the echinoid Echinocyamus linearis Capeder are classified within the ichnospecies Oichnus simplex Bromley. Contrary to the original analysis, the possibility remains that some of these holes were the result of eulimid parasitism rather than predation by juvenile cassids. If other, larger echinoids in the fauna suffered predation by adult cassids, then the available samples are probably too small for it to be recognised.

Opis:: Two localities of Pupilla pratensis were found in the environs of Gubin and Stęszew, W. Poland. Only one recent record of the species, earlier regarded as an ecotype of the widespread P. muscorum, was known from Poland. Consequently, the distribution and conservation status of the species are not well known. Our data indicate that P. pratensis is rare and has specific habitat requirements. In our study area it was found in only two out of 71 examined localities of a very similar habitat type and sampled on the same occasions. The two localities are wet meadows covered by sedges (mostly Carex acutiforis) growing on a calcareous peat substratum of lacustrine origin; the species is accompanied by two rare and legally protected vertiginids: Vertigo angustior and V. moulinsiana.

Opis:: Introduction. Radix auricularia (Linnaeus, 1758) is a freshwater gastropod belongs to the Lymnaeidae (pond snails) family which act as intermediate hosts or vectors of various parasitic flukes. No study has yet been undertaken on the prevalence of Petasiger spp. infection in R. auricularia. Species of Petasiger (Dietz, 1909) are a cosmopolitan parasite that utilize snails as the first intermediate host, with vertebrates like amphibians larvae and fish as the second intermediate host, followed by fish-eating birds. The current paper is considered to be the first report of Petasiger exaeretus parasitized R. auricularia in Iraq, which is supported with molecular and phylogenetic analysis. Materials and method. Freshwater snails R. auricularia were collected during October 2016 – September 2017 from different locations of Sufaia village on the Greater Zab river, Erbil province, Iraq. Results. A total of 307 freshwater snails R. auricularia were collected, only five of them were infected with a prevalence of Petasiger exaeretus (1.62%). Conclusions. The current study agrees with the opinion of Selbach, Soldánová (26), which suggested the possibility of a much higher morphological diversity within Petasiger species, based on the number of described cercariae, compared with adult forms.It is clear that P. phalacrocoracis specimens have often been erroneously designated as P. exaeretus by many authors (Našincová et al., 1994). Certain morphological similarities and dissimilarities between P. exaeretus and P. phalacrocoracis can be detected: the pear-shaped body resembles P. exaeretus, whereas, P. phalacrocoracis have an elongated body.

Opis:: The second site of Pupilla alpicola (Charpentier) was found in Poland in 2010. It is a treeless alkaline fen located close to the village of Czarny Dunajec (Nowy Targ region, S. Poland). The site is the north-western extension of the Western Carpathian distribution of the species, being more than 30 km away from the previously known Polish site near Niedzica village and also from its known sites in Slovakia. The first recent record of Pupilla pratensis (Clessin) in Poland was found in the north-eastern most part of Poland close to the border with Lithuania, in the vicinity of the village of Rowele. It is an extension of the species' distribution in NW. Europe and also the eastern most known record of this taxon. Both species are exclusive inhabitants of calcareous fensand fen meadows, highly endangered and mostly isolated, and deserve attention of nature conservation agencies.They seem to be very rare in Poland, because no further population was documented at 25 suitable alkaline fen sites sampled mainly in 2010 and 2011 across the southern and eastern part of Poland.

Opis:: Forested scree slopes represent one of the types of shallow subterranean habitats characterised by several unique traits, such as close contact with the soil surface, better availability of organic matter, and lower seasonal fluctuations in microclimate. Relatively varied assemblages of gastropods were collected using a series of subterranean traps filled with formaldehyde or ethylene glycol, exposed inside a forested scree slope at depths from 5 to 95 cm in the Natural Nature Reserve Sivec (eastern Slovakia). The number of gastropods was smaller compared to arthropods. The material of 120 specimens consisted of 22 gastropod species representing 15 families. Almost 87% of the specimens were captured near the soil surface (5– 15 cm) and only few of them penetrated deeper. Ethylene glycol was more effective than formaldehyde in collecting gastropods. No subterranean species were found. Forest species predominated over some hygrophilous and petrophilous ones.

Opis:: Selected life-cycle and population parameters of a common Euro-Siberian wetland snail – Succinea putris (L.) – were studied in the field and in the laboratory. In the field the snails reproduced at least from April till September, with April–May and August–September peaks; only one such peak (April) was observed in the laboratory, though the snails reproduced throughout the year. The changes in population size structure in the field and the laboratory results (life span 210–420 days, mean 309) indicated semelparity. Growth in the laboratory included two phases: slow (November–March) and fast (June–October); which phase came first during the life cycle depended on the date of hatching. The growth rate in the field corresponded closely with the fast-phase growth in the laboratory. The smallest reproducing individual was slightly over 2.8 whorls; snails of 3.0 whorls were regularly observed to produce eggs (maximum number of whorls in adults: 4.0). Sexual maturity was attained in ca. 160 days. The eggs (non-calcified, translucent, spherical, 1.7–2.0 mm in diameter) were laid in batches, 5–64 per batch; the eggs within a batch were glued together. The batch dimensions were 3.5–25.7×2.2–24.7 mm. The time to lay a batch was 20–35 minutes. Forty-eight snails produced 74 batches within 12 months. The duration of the egg phase was 11–28 days, which might indicate egg retention of varied duration; hatching was asynchronous, spanning 1–12 days within a batch. The hatchlings had shells of 1.1–1.2 whorls; hatching success was 95%. Neither uniparental reproduction, nor egg or juvenile cannibalism were observed. When compared to data in the literature, our results imply that Succinea putris displays substantial local variation in life-cycle traits.We also provide an overview table to discuss similarities and adaptive radiation in the European succineid species.

Opis:: Growth of Chilostoma faustinum (Rossmässler, 1835) was recorded under natural conditions in Romincka Forest (NE. Poland), one of the northernmost localities of the species. During the growing season (April–October) the average growth rate was 0.22 whorl/month. In the local conditions Ch. faustinum Leeds three growing seasons to complete its shell growth. Shells of Ch. faustinum from Romincka Forest are slightly smaller than in the other studied populations: their average width is 16.5 mm (range 13–19 mm); and the average number of whorls is 4.5 (range 4–5).

Opis:: This review presents the results of studies on the freshwater snail-trematode associations, carried out in Europe since the beginning of the 20th century. The great number of synonyms of snail and trematode specific names has made the cooperation between malacologists and parasitologists difficult. Here we provide a survey of larval trematodes (cercariae) based on Central, North and Western European literature. Whenever possible, the valid species name is provided, accompanied by synonyms, or just provisional names are used making up the largest part of the list. Trematodes with a definitely unclear systematic status are indicated as species incertae sedis. These include mostly trematodes which were attributed obviously erroneous names with poor or no description of their morphology. Although the provisional names inflate the number of trematode species and there are still many identification problems, we believe that this is another step in assessing the trematode species composition in Europe which will help not only parasitologists but also malacologists and contribute to their closer cooperation.

Opis:: Shell habitus and COI mitochondrial gene sequences of one freshwater snail from Khios and three from Rhodes islands were analysed. Both methods confirmed assignment of these specimens to the genus Daphniola Radoman, 1973. Genetic distance between individuals from these two islands is surprisingly low, strongly suggesting that they belong to the same species, still undescribed. Comparison of COI sequences with other known species of this genus shows that the closest relative of the Khios and Rhodes populations is D. louisi Falniowski et Szarowska, 2000 from Attica. The results are discussed in the context of geological and climatic history of the Mediterranean.

Opis:: Balea fallax (Rossm.) collected from the Roztocze Upland (SE. Poland) was kept in the laboratory for four years. Observations were conducted between March and October when the snails were kept at room temperature (18-25°C); in winter they were stored at 3°C. The egg-laying period started in late March and lasted till October, with maxima in spring and early autumn. The snails laid oval, gelatinous eggs with separatecalcium carbonate crystals in the external envelope (average egg size 1.96 × 1.73 mm). The eggs were deposited in batches (up to 14 eggs at a time) or singly. The number of batches per snail per year ranged between 1and 4. Snails isolated before maturation laid defective eggs which failed to develop, which suggest that the speciesis incapable of uniparental reproduction or at least the ability is very limited. The reproduction rate decreased during consecutive years, probably as a result of the aging or the shortage of allosperm in isolated individuals.Compared to batches of typically oviparous clausiliids, eggs of B. fallax hatched slightly earlier (interval between oviposition and hatching lasted 8-10 days at room temperature). It is likely that the adults retained developing eggs in the uterus for a short time. The juveniles needed at least 6 months to attain the ultimates hell size.

Opis:: The author discusses three Ancient Greek names for ‘snail with a spiral shell’: (1) σέσῑλος, (2) σέσηλος and (3) σέσελις (gen. sg. σεσέλιτος). It is suggested that the first name σέσῑλος is of Ionic origin (with the regular representation of the diphthong ει as ῑ), the second one σέσηλος belongs to the Doric heritage (see the Laconian gloss in Hesychius’ lexicon: σέσηλοι· κοχλίαι. Λάκωνες), and the third σέσελις represents a purely Attic form. The Proto-Greek archetype should be reconstructed as *σέσελϝος (m.) ‘snail’. In fact, the disappearance of the glide *ϝ in the Ancient Greek dialects causes the lengthening of the original vowel *ε to ει (later ῑ) in Ionic, to η in Doric. Only the Attic dialect preserves the short vowel ε with no change, see e.g. Ionic ξεῖνος, Doric ξῆνος, Attic ξένος (m.) ‘guest-friend; guest; stranger, foreigner, refugee’ < Proto-Greek *ξένϝος, see Myc. Gk. ke-se-nu-wo [ksenwos], Aeolic ξέννος, Corcyrean πρόξενϝος (m.) ‘public guest, deputy’. The archetype *σέσελϝος was created as a reduplicated form of the Indo-European verbal root *tsel- ‘to creep, crawl’, cf. Old Indic (Vedic) tsáru- m. (u-stem) ‘a crawling animal’ (< IE. *tsélus m. ‘snail’). A related term with no reduplication is attested in the Hesychian glossary (σ-374): σελάτης· κοχλίας, as well as in the Celtic languages, e.g. [1] MIr. selide ‘snail’, Mod. Ir. seilide, seilchide, seilmide, slimide ‘id.’ (< Celtic *selantī- < IE. *tsel-n̥t-ī); [2] OIr. selige m. (gl. testudo) ‘tortoise’, MIr. seilche ‘tortoise; snail’, Scottish Gaelic seilcheag ‘snail’ (< Celtic *selaki̯ās < IE. *tselə2ki̯ās).

Opis:: Adults of Balea fallax sampled monthly from the Roztocze Upland were dissected to examine the occurrence of uterine egg retention. Developing eggs were found in snails collected between May and August. In June more than 60% of the studied individuals were gravid, while in other months egg-retaining snails constituted less than 10% of the sample. The number of retained eggs ranged from 3 to 17 (mean 12.3) and was not related to the adult shell size. In June the majority of eggs contained shelled embryos (maximum shell size1.1 whorl). The reproduction mode of B. fallax is compared with those of other ovoviviparous clausiliids of Central Europe.
