Opis:
In order to selectively separate smithsonite and calcite using potassium lauryl phosphate as collector and reveal the depression mechanism, the approaches of micro-flotation and zeta potential measurements were adopted. The effects of sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP), water glass (WG), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and lignosulfonate calcium (LSC) as depressants on smithsonite and calcite have been studied through micro-flotation. The single mineral flotation tests show that LSC can depress calcite, but it has little effect on smithsonite flotation. Flotation separation of a mixture of smithsonite and calcite can be completed to obtain a zinc concentrate grade up to 33.85% Zn with a recovery of 70.06%. The zeta potential results illustrate that LSC has higher tendency to be adsorbed on the surface of calcite. However, there is little adsorption of LSC on smithsonite.

Opis:
This work studied the effects of sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP), tanning extract, water glass (WG) and calcium lignosulfonate (CLS) as depressants for the separation of smithsonite from calcite by using a cationic collector called octadecylamine acetate (ODA). Micro-flotation experimental tests showed that CLS can greatly and selectively depress calcite. When the dosages of CLS used were 20 and 40 mg/L, a concentrate with Zn grades of 42.54% and 49.32% and Zn recoveries of 81.66% and 68.00% was achieved in the flotation separation of mixed mineral (1:1 smithsonite:calcite). Zeta potential and adsorption measurements revealed that the adsorption of CLS on calcite’s surface was greater than that on smithsonite’s surface. When CLS was added, the adsorption of ODA was hindered greatly on the calcite’s surface but slightly on the smithsonite’s surface.

Opis:
Ca2+ and Mg2+ are the most dominating unavoidable ions in the smithsonite flotation. In this paper, the effect of Ca2+ (Mg2+) on the surface of smithsonite sulfidization in a system where water molecules are present was investigated using density functional based tight binding (DFTB+) simulations for the first time. The results indicated that the adsorption of hydrated Ca2+ complexes is stronger than that of hydrated Mg2+ complexes on the hydrated smithsonite (101) surface. In addition, at low concentrations of sodium sulfide, there is no adsorption of HS- on the surface pre-adsorbed with hydrated Ca2+ complexes, but only on the surface pre-adsorbed with hydrated Mg2+ complexes. At high concentrations of Na2S, S2- weakens the adsorption of hydrated Ca2+ complexes due to competitive adsorption, but the presence of S2- could desorb hydrated Mg2+ complexes from the surface. The results compared the differences in effects of Ca2+ and Mg2+ on smithsonite sulfidization, which could provide an atomic scale basis for researching the surface sulfidization of oxide minerals.

Flotation of smithsonite coming from a cerussite flotation circuit was investigated using Armac C and Armac T as cationic collectors and their mixtures with potassium amyl xanthate (KAX) as an anionic collector. Under optimum condition using Armac T with sodium hexamethaphosphate as a de-pressant, a smithsonite concentrate with 42% Zn and 89.6% recovery is obtained while in the presence of sodium silicate depressant Armac C produces a concentrate containing 40.8% Zn with 92.5% recovery. However, Armac T acts a little more selectively than Armac C but their mixture with KAX act inversely. The KAX-Armac C mixed collector improves the Zn grade and recovery of the flotation concentrate while KAX-Armac T does not. At the mixture ratio of KAX - Armac C 2:1, the amine collector consump-tion is decreased and an optimal concentrate with 94% recovery and 43% Zn grade is obtained without any gangue depressant reagents.

The leaching of low grade zinc oxide mining tailings by organic acid as a leaching agent was investigated. Zinc was extracted successfully from sample by citric acid leaching. The effects of solid-to- liquid ratio, acid concentration, reaction time, temperature and ore particle size on the leaching efficiency were studied. The results obtained showed that particle sizes and reaction time had not any significant effect on the leaching recovery of zinc from smithsonite in the sizes range of 40-350 μm. Under conditions: temperature of 80ºC, reaction time of 60 min, citric acid concentration of 0.5 mol/L, and solid to liquid ratio of 1:10, 82% of zinc could be recovered.

Opis:
Pulp rheology is an important factor affecting flotation. The effects of particle size (150-74 μm, 74-38 μm, 38-23 μm, -23 μm), pulp density (11.76%-34.78%), pH (5.3-12.4), collector concentration (25-500 mg/dm3), and stirring intensity (400-900 rpm) on the rheology of smithsonite, kaolinite, quartz, and calcite minerals were investigated in detail. Additionally, the agglomerate morphology of particles was observed by a polarizing microscope. The results showed that as the mineral particle size decreased and pulp density increased, the apparent viscosity and yield stress of the pulp increased. Especially the fine mineral particles (-23 μm) presented a higher apparent viscosity and yield stress. The order of apparent viscosity and yield stress for the minerals from large to small was: kaolinite>calcite>smithsonite>quartz under different pH values, the collector concentrations, and stirring intensities. In the presence of collector of octadecylamine, smithsonite, kaolinite, and calcite particles could form aggregates, especially smithsonite particles presented obvious agglomeration with large particle size and compact network structure. The agglomeration effect of calcite and kaolinite particles were weaker than that of smithsonite. The particle agglomeration resulted in the increase of the apparent viscosity and yield stress of the pulp. Quartz particles did not form clusters, hence the pulp’s apparent viscosity and yield stress were the lowest. The research on the changes in rheological properties of the pulp will hopefully provide some guidance for future flotation.

Opis:
In this study, the leaching behaviour of zinc from a smithsonite ore sample (23.43% Zn) having goethite and calcite as main gangue minerals was investigated in sodium hydroxide solutions using Xray diffraction and chemical analyses. Within the studied NaOH concentration range (1-4 mole/dm3), higher leaching ratio values for Zn were obtained by leaching at 298 K because of the decreased stability of soluble zincate species in solution at higher temperatures. When the concentration of NaOH solution was increased from 1 to 3 mole/dm3 at 298 K, leaching ratio value of Zn increased from 3.8 to 70.1%. At 4 mole/dm3 NaOH concentration, Zn leaching ratio value (70.9%) levelled off due to the formation of solid hydrated calcium zincate phase in leaching solution. On the other hand, very low leaching ratio values of Zn were obtained by leaching in 1 mole/dm3 NaOH solution at 298 K (3.8%) and 363 K (1.4%) due to the formation of solid zinc hydroxide and solid zinc oxide phases, respectively. It was observed that increasing leaching time from 1800 to 14400 s at 3 mole/dm3 NaOH concentration, favoured the formation of hydrated calcium zincate phase and so decreased the leaching ratio of Zn to a lower value (60.6%). The effect of solid/liquid ratio was also investigated and it was found that when solid/liquid ratio was decreased, Zn leaching ratio values decreased at constant OH/Zn mole ratio and increased at constant NaOH concentration conditions. Besides, for some of the experiments, leaching ratio values of lead were also given.

In this study, the direct conversion behaviors of different alkaline earth metal solids (the hydroxides and the sulfates of alkaline earth metals Ca, Sr, Ba and Mg) to their corresponding carbonates in dissolved carbonate-containing pregnant solutions obtained by direct leaching of a smithsonite (ZnCO3) ore sample in aqueous ammonia solutions having different concentrations (4 M, 8 M and 13.3 M NH3) were investigated by using X-ray diffraction analyses at alkaline earth metal to dissolved carbonate mole ratios of 1:1 and 1:2, for revealing the conversion possibilities of dissolved carbonate in the pregnant solutions to solid carbonate by-products. The results of direct conversion experiments showed that Ca(OH)2, CaSO4•2H2O, Sr(OH)2•8H2O and Ba(OH)2•8H2O converted to their corresponding carbonates, SrSO4 partially converted to SrCO3 as observed by the presence of unreacted SrSO4 peaks in X-ray diffraction patterns of the converted solids, and BaSO4 did not convert to BaCO3 because of its lower solubility with respect to BaCO3. On the other hand, it was observed that Mg(OH)2 did not convert to MgCO3, but MgSO4•7H2O converted dominantly to an uncommon phase, which was tentatively identified as Mg5Zn3(CO3)2(OH)12•H2O. In the study, a complete discussion on the conversion behaviors of alkaline earth metal solids to their corresponding carbonates was given considering the differences between their solubility product constants and the changes in the free energies of the theoretical conversion reactions. In addition, infrared spectra and scanning electron microscope images of some of the converted solids were also presented for characterization purposes.

In this study, firstly, the effects of ammonia concentration, leaching time and solid/liquid ratio on the leaching behaviour of zinc from a smithsonite (ZnCO3) ore sample in aqueous ammonia solutions were investigated at room temperature by chemical, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy analyses. It was found that leaching ratio of zinc steeply increased from 30.1 to 76.2% with increasing ammonia concentration from 1.0 to 4.0 M and maximum zinc leaching ratio of 79.7% was reached after leaching in 13.3 M NH3 solution. The XRD pattern of the residue obtained after leaching in 4.0 M NH3 solution for 90 min at solid/liquid ratio of 0.15 g/mL, the optimum condition, showed that smithsonite phase in the ore sample almost completely dissolved whereas the gangue minerals goethite and calcite remained unaffected, confirming the selectivity of ammonia solution for zinc dissolution. Together with zinc, leaching ratios of cadmium were also determined. In second part of the study, precipitation tests (by complete drying at different temperatures) were conducted on dissolved zinc, carbonate and ammonia containing pregnant solutions obtained after selected leaching experiments. By complete drying of the pregnant solutions at low temperatures, i.e. 50°C, relatively pure solid zinc ammine carbonate (Zn(NH3)CO3) precipitates and at higher temperatures, i.e. 150°C, quite pure solid zinc carbonate hydroxide (Zn5(CO3)2(OH)6) precipitates could be prepared. High-temperature heating of Zn(NH3)CO3 and Zn5(CO3)2(OH)6 precipitates at 450°C yielded single-phase zinc oxide (ZnO). The chemical compositions, FT-IR spectra and scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs of some of the precipitates were also presented.

In this work, the structural changes occurred in a zinc carbonate (smithsonite) ore sample following heating at temperatures between 523 K and 1173 K were investigated in detail using X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal (TG/DTA) and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy analyses. Afterwards, the leaching characteristics of zinc from the ore sample and the heated ore samples in sodium hydroxide solutions were determined. While heating at 523 K did not cause any structural change in the ore sample, heating at 723 K completely converted smithsonite $(ZnCO_3)$ in the ore sample to zinc oxide $(ZnO)$, which resulted lower zinc leaching efficiencies of 40.6% and 62.0% for 3 and 4 mol/dm3 NaOH concentrations, respectively, in comparison to zinc leaching efficiencies (67.2% and 70.7%) obtained for the unheated ore sample. On the other hand, due to neoformation of dissolution resistant $ZnFe_2O_4$, $Ca_2ZnSi2O_7$ and $Zn_2SiO_4$ phases during heating and formation of $CaZn_2(OH)_6∙2H_2O$ phase during leaching, the leaching efficiency of zinc further decreased to 22.2% and 31.3%, respectively, in 3 and 4 $mol$ / $dm^3$ NaOH solutions for the ore sample heated at 1173 K. The formation of zinc-containing dissolution resistant phases by high-temperature heating was observed to be the only reason for the reduction in the zinc leaching efficiency (49.4% at 1173 K) at the highest NaOH concentration (8 mol/dm3) studied. In this work, the comparative precipitation studies were also conducted and crystalline zinc oxides with different morphologies could be precipitated at considerably high efficiencies from the selected pregnant solutions obtained following leaching.

The mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of calamines developed from chemical weathering within two different tectonic settings (tectonic horst and graben) are described. Calamines collected from the Olkusz-Pomorzany and the Bolesław zinc and lead mines were analysed geochemically by means of EMP and SEM-EDS and their mineralogical composition was identified by using reflected light microscopy and XRD analysis. The calamines from the Olkusz-Pomorzany mine are composed of marcasite, galena, cerussite, sphalerite, hemimorphite, smithsonite and goethite. Hemimorphite prevails over smithsonite and occurs in the vicinity of primary sulphides. The mineralogical composition of the calamines from the Bolesław area is less diverse. These are primarily composed of goethite and smithsonite, with a minor content of marcasite and remnant sphalerite. The mineral composition of weathering sites in the Olkusz-Pomorzany and Bolesław areas may reflect different geochemical conditions (from slightly acidic to alkaline pH values, from lower to higher CO2 partial pressure and solutions of different silica saturation) that could have changed over time. The mineralogical compositions of the calamines differ quantitatively and this could reflect the tectonic setting of the primary ore affecting the rate of chemical weathering.
