Opis:: This paper analysed the economic efficiency of small-scale tomato farmers in the Greater Letaba municipality of South Africa’s Limpopo Province. Primary data were collected from 68 tomato farmers based on structured questionnaires and using convenience and purposive sampling procedures. The Cobb-Douglas production function was used to analyse the level of economic efficiency. The study utilised the output approach, where the output achieved by the farmers is compared to the maximum output attainable using the given inputs. The empirical results reveal that mean technical, allocative, and economic efficiency levels are at 0.95, 0.41 and 0.39, respectively. The study also found that land (farm size), seedlings, labour, pesticides and water have a positively significant relationship with the production of tomatoes in the study area. Therefore, it is recommended that the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development provide farmers with enough extension services by employing more extension personnel. Government programmes such as the Comprehensive Agricultural Support Programme should be intensified – through the pillar of training and capacity building – to reach the small-scale farmers in the municipality, whereby farmers should be provided with training on the recommended minimum and maximum application of inputs like pesticides, fertilisers, seedlings and water in tomato production.

Opis:: The aim of the article is to assess the environmental sustainability of small-scale farming. The authors tried to reach the farmers' subjective opinions, their way of thinking, attitudes and determinants affecting environmental performance. The use of in-depth interviews gave a chance to draw reliable and accurate conclusions on the analysed topic and register many elements that could be omitted using quantitative methods. Thus, the work forms a complementary part of research on the sustainability of small-scale farms, which is its main added value. Furthermore, the use of data from three EU member states – Poland, Romania and Lithuania – provided a basis for comparative analysis. Conclusions proved that small farms perform important environmental functions in rural areas. It results from the very essence of this type of farm, based on the cultivation of traditions and experience passed down from generation to generation, as well as from the family nature of these units.
Celem artykułu jest ocena zrównoważenia środowiskowego w rolnictwie drobnotowarowym. Autorzy starali się poznać subiektywne opinii rolników, ich sposób myślenia, postawy i determinanty działań środowiskowych. Zastosowanie wywiadów pogłębionych było szansą na wyciągnięcie rzetelnych i trafnych wniosków oraz zarejestrowanie wielu elementów, które mogłyby zostać pominięte przy zastosowaniu metod ilościowych. Tym samym praca stanowi komplementarną część badań nad zrównoważonym rozwojem gospodarstw drobnotowarowych, co jest jej główną wartością dodaną publikacji. Ponadto, wykorzystanie danych z trzech państw członkowskich UE – Polski, Rumunii i Litwy – dało podstawę do analizy porównawczej. Wnioski dowodzą, że małe gospodarstwa rolne pełnią ważne funkcje środowiskowe na obszarach wiejskich. Wynika to z samej istoty tego typu gospodarstw, opartej na kultywowaniu tradycji i doświadczeń przekazywanych z pokolenia na pokolenie, a także z rodzinnego charakteru tych jednostek.

Opis:: The sets of the innovative hardware for equipment of pigs breeding farms developed in RUE "NPC NAS of Belarus of Mechanization of Agriculture" are presented in this article, the researches were conducted proving that domestic processing equipment isn't inferior to the western one, and surpasses it in expeditious service and opportunities of adaptation of the software to specific conditions of the enterprises. The developed innovative equipment meets all production requirements and allows to use most fully the genetic potential of an animal that is confirmed by the schedules of labor productivity provided in article, conversion of a forage and an average daily gain of live weight on nurture. Obtaining such good results in Republic of Belarus became possible thanks to application of elements of the best available technologies in pigs breeding at new construction and reconstruction of pigs breeding farms. At the Institute of Agroengineering and Environmental Problems\Russian Federation\ projects of intelligent technological modules, with full mechanization and automated of the main technological processes, the drops of labor costs allowing to achieve, improvements of a sanitary and hygienic situation of keeping of animals and birds and drop of stressful situations at their service are developed for small-scale producers that as a result will lead to depreciation of the made production and increase in profitability and competition of production.
