Opis:
After joining the European Union, Polish entrepreneurs, especially those in the small and medium-sized sector, gained the opportunity to be supported by non-repayable aid funds, mainly under the Cohesion Policy. They used these funds primarily for the expansion of production (service) capacities, research and development activities, implementation of innovations and training of human resources. Despite the need to meet numerous requirements, they eagerly sought EU funds because of their non-refundable nature. When analysing the available results of studies and analyses in the field of support to SMEs through EU non-reimbursable aid, it is difficult to assess clearly their importance for the functioning and development of the sector in question, in particular for the investment, innovation or R&D activities of SMEs. This is due to the fact that they were usually of a fragmentary nature. Effects were assessed in terms of the project system (tangible products) and not in terms of their importance for the functioning of the SME sector. This study is an attempt at a broader assessment of the significance of EU funding for SMEs, taking into account the author’s experience in preparing, evaluating and implementing projects co-financed by funds in the analysed sector. The subject of the analysis carried out in the study is the volume, directions and effects of support for the SME sector in Poland with EU funds, while the aim is to determine the importance of this support in the activities of the entities in this sector (excluding investments in human capital). The analysis covers the last two completed Cohesion Policy programming periods: 2007–2013 and 2014–2020. The data used for the analysis come from the sources of the Ministry responsible for the implementation of EU funds in Poland, the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development, and public statistics.

Opis:
Due to the multiple advantages that it offers to both sellers and consumers, the digitalization of services is a process that is gaining popularity on a global scale. The aim of this research was to explore the impact of e-marketing elements related to SME products on sustainable customer behavior in the context of purchasing decisions. The expanded unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT2) model and the technology acceptance model (TAM) were both used to research the elements that lead to long-term behavioral changes in favor of more sustainable consumer purchasing decisions. Sustainable consumer behaviors are those that are based on trust and continuation intention (CI). The case study is based on a SME company that creates modernized versions of traditional snacks and markets them online. Researchers surveyed 122 of their customers for the survey-based statistics. The findings reveal that, out of the six factors, only 4 factors that had significant impact on trust, which are Perceived of Usefulness (PU), Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU), Social Influence (SI), and the most significant is Hedonic Motives (HM). While, Quality Information (IQ) did not contribute to Trust. Trust (T) appears to have a substantial positive impact on the development of customer’s continuous purchase decision (CI). Age and education did not moderate the relationship between trust and CI. Small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) business owners should therefore focus on Perceived Risk related variables to build greater levels of trust and capture customers’ ongoing interest. This study contributes to a body of knowledge on the e-marketing of SME items, particularly snacks, by demonstrating how CI might cause long-term behavioral changes in favor of more sustainable customer purchase decisions.

Opis:
Research background: Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a fundamental role in countries’ economies. Currently, entrepreneurs are struggling not only with the uncertainty of the business environment, but also with high expectations for businesses to be run in a sustainable way. Therefore, the impact of corporate reputation and social media on sustainability is an area of interest for entrepreneurs. In this context, little research has been conducted on their perception of the linkage between these issues. Furthermore, there has been no direct explanation of the effects of SMEs’ reputation and social media usage on their sustainable development, especially in the V4 countries. Purpose of the article: This article defines, quantifies, and verifies the effects of corporate reputation and social media on sustainable development as perceived by SMEs’ owners and top managers in the V4 countries. Methods: Data were gathered in December 2022 and January 2023 using the computer-assisted web interviewing (CAWI) method. The survey was designed based on a literature review and experts’ opinions. Respondents (top managers of SMEs, n = 1090) were asked questions on their firms’ characteristics, reputation, social media usage and sustainable development. The linear regression modelling (LRM) was utilised to evaluate the hypothesis. Findings & value added: The study revealed a strong relationship between owners’ and top managers’ perceptions of the importance of both corporate reputation and sustainable development in SMEs. The belief that social media supports the growth of companies’ performance is related to the understanding of the concept of sustainable business development. Surprisingly, for the owners and top managers of SMEs in V4 countries, there was no relationship between the awareness of social media usage to share information with customers and partners and the understanding of sustainable business growth.

At the present time, with continuous market changes, customer satisfaction and meeting the needs of employees are the most important factors for building managerial systems and implementing of the strategy in many companies. The goal of this paper is to develop a multi-faced knowledge management-based strategy combining analytical and qualitative methods and processes for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that managers can use to achieve strategic performance goals in their organizations. Various methods with the currently used modern technologies and a developed organizational culture make up the knowledge management system as a method inspired by the leadership, focused primarily on customer satisfaction and meeting the needs of employees. A multi-faced approach for building knowledge management-based strategy in small and medium companies is developed. It is based on practical experience and a research literature background incorporating implemented technologies and tools in quality environment with the usage of knowledge management. This research depicts a proposal of knowledge management-based strategy as a response to the lack of studies that address the knowledge management in building strategy in SME. Furthermore, this approach enhances the existing literature, giving insight in the collection of current business models.

Purpose: The objective of the paper is to study the impact of the global coronavirus pandemic on the standing of micro-enterprises in the Silesian Voivodeship. Design/methodology/approach: A study sample of 120 micro-enterprises from the Silesian Voivodeship has been selected. The study methods such as an interview and a survey have been used. A questionnaire has been used as a tool. The properly completed surveys have been obtained from 43 enterprises. Findings: It has been established that depending on the specific nature of a given enterprise and the area in which it operates, enterprises are, to varying degrees, susceptible to the impact of adverse factors related to the emergence of the global coronavirus pandemic, which, in turn, results in the differences in the standing of these enterprises. Research limitations/implications: In view of the small study sample, the studies carried out do not create a complete picture of the impact of the pandemic on micro-enterprises in the Silesian Voivodeship. They are rather a contribution to further studies. These should be conducted on the basis of a larger study sample. Originality/value: The global coronavirus pandemic which affected the world in the years 2019-2022 has left a strong mark on many aspects of human functioning, including pursuing business activity. It is important to gain knowledge on the impact of pandemic-related restrictions on the functioning of micro-enterprises in order to develop mechanisms to mitigate the adverse effects on entrepreneurship based on micro-enterprises.

Although Lean has been known and applied in both theoretical and practical on around the world for many years, a deeper understanding of Lean tools, principles implementation, and a roadmap to successfully apply is needed. In the context of Small and medium enterprises (SME), it is very difficult for local enterprises to apply synchronization Lean tools, techniques, and principles because of limited resources in manpower, technology, and management capability. Through the case-based study, this paper proposed the four-phase roadmap for Lean application in SMEs. An analysis of methods from a literature review of Lean implementation was conducted in order to identify the phases of the roadmap. Then, six SMEs in Vietnam that applied Lean were chosen to collect data and analyze the applicability and how Lean tools are successful implemented in the cases to confirm the findings.

Technological progress is the driving force behind industrial development. It is a multidimensional and multi-level phenomenon. In this article we focus on its three manifestations: information and communication technologies (ICT), Industry 4.0 and agile manufacturing. The aim of this article is to analyse the relationship between these constructs as they are undoubtedly interrelated. ICT plays a key role, but it is not a goal itself. They are a prerequisite for the implementation of Industry 4.0, but together with it they serve to achieve agility by the manufacturing system and, as a result, achieve a competitive advantage by companies operating in turbulent and unpredictable environment. The literature findings in this paper are part of a broader study conducted on the impact of ICT on agility of SMEs operating in India. Therefore, we include also subsections showing the level of this relationship in Indian SMEs.

Increasing awareness and the number of activities for environmental protection has influenced the development of environmental management systems. Currently, there is a wide range of environmental management systems that can be implemented thus organizations can choose which system suits their activities best. Among small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises, the most popular is a system based on the ISO 14001 standard. Therefore, it seems advisable to promote the skillful implementation of this system. The study was devoted to this issue. It pointed out that the participation of an external consultant, the size of the enterprise as well as the nature of the activity in small and medium manufacturing enterprises has a small importance at the time of its implementation. To implement such a system skillfully, preparation work period for designing and implementing should last about 9 - 12 months.

Opis:
Given the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in sustained development of a society, there is an increasing impetus on entrepreneurs to adopt CSR practices. Since Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) make up to 90% of the UAE’s market, this study was conducted to explore their understanding and practices of CSR. The study included both primary and secondary sources for collection of relevant data including extensive literature review and a survey employing an elaborate questionnaire and interviews with a number of SMEs across the UAE. The study highlighted that although there is a general awareness about CSR practices amongst the SMEs, their understanding of corporate social responsibility varies quite widely because of an ambivalent definition of CSR. There is a need for a conscious alignment of company policies with strategies conducive to efficient and effective implementation of CSR objectives for sustainable development. Although most SMEs expressed the intent and desire to make a better contribution to the society, they felt the need for better human resources and capital.
Biorąc pod uwagę znaczenie społecznej odpowiedzialności biznesu (CSR) w trwałym rozwoju społeczeństwa, przedsiębiorcy coraz częściej zachęcają do stosowania praktyk CSR. Ponieważ małe i średnie przedsiębiorstwa (MŚP) stanowią 90% rynku ZEA, badanie to zostało przeprowadzone w celu zbadania ich praktyk w obszarze CSR. Istnieje potrzeba świadomego dostosowania polityk firmy do strategii sprzyjających skutecznej i efektywnej realizacji celów CSR w zakresie zrównoważonego rozwoju. Chociaż większość MŚP wyraziła zamiar i chęć wniesienia większego wkładu do społeczeństwa, odczuwały potrzebę większego zaangażowania zasobów ludzkich i kapitału w tym zakresie.

However, successful implementation of software measurement programs (MPs) in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is challenging. Objective: To perform a detailed analysis of studies on MPs for highlighting the existing measurement models, tools, metrics selection methods and challenges for implementing MPs in SMEs. Methods: A Systematic Mapping Study (SMS) is conducted. Results: In total, 35 primary studies are comprehensively analyzed. We identified 29 software measurement models and 4 tools specifically designed for MPs in SMEs. Majority of the measurement models (51%) are built upon software process improvement approaches. With respect to measurement purposes of models, the distribution of MPs was identified as: characterization (63%), evaluation (83%), improvement (93%) and prediction (16%). Majority of primary studies discussed the use of measurement experts and experience (60%) followed by the use of measurement standards (40% and the use of automated tools (22%) for metrics selection in MPs. We found that the SMEs and large organization face different challenges as studies in SMEs report challenges that exist even before the implementation of MPs due to infrastructure and management processes of SMEs. The challenges reported by studies in large organizations are mostly related to the issues discovered while implementing MPs. Conclusion: The analysis of measurement models, tools, metrics selection methods and challenges of implementing MPs should help the SMEs to make a feasibility study before implementing a MP.

Purpose of the article: The essence of this article is to assess the sources of the market, economic, financial, operational, HR, security and legal risk depending on the rate of implementing the risk management process in the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Methods: We realized the risk assessment process on the basis of evaluations by 487 man-agers who gave their opinions to selected risks and their sources in the SMEs in Slovakia. Subsequently, we utilized the methods and tools of the mathematical statistics (descriptive statistics, comparison, Z-score for 2 population proportions, Chi-squared test for 5 x 2 contingency table). Findings & Value added: The strongest dependence perceived by the SME-entrepreneurs lies between the development of the tax and insurance burdens as the source of the economic risk and the criterion of the ?level of the risk management in the company?. The overall results of the empirical research underline the significance and importance of dealing with the assessment of the key risks and their sources in the Slovak SMEs. The results having been processed are the basic material for the professional public and other organizations whose effort is to help the companies in an effective implementation of the risk management process in the Slovak enterprises.

The study carried out a factorial analysis to identify the components to be considered in the training of the SMEs in the industrial sector of Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, México. The considered variables were: training, legal aspects of training, training budget, training course instructors, training culture and seniority in the company. As a result, the analysis of communalities allows us to observe that of these variables, the one that produces the lowest percentage of the variance is the age of the company, so it could be dispensed as a component of the training.
