Opis:
Objectives This study’s objective was to examine association between sleep duration and sleep quality, and metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components in Taiwanese male police officers. Material and Methods Male police officers who underwent annual health examinations were invited to join the study and eventually a total of 796 subjects was included in it. The study subjects were divided into 5 groups according to the length (duration) of sleep: < 5, 5–5.9, 6–6.9, 7–7.9 and ≥ 8 h per day, and the global Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to categorize their sleep quality as good or poor. To analyze the association between sleep problems and MetS, adjusted odds ratio and respective 95% confidence intervals (CI) were computed. Results The prevalence of MetS in Taiwanese male police officers was 24.5%. Abdominal obesity had the highest proportion (36.2%) among 5 components of MetS. More than 1/2 of the police officers (52.3%) had poor sleep quality. Police officers with higher scores of sleep disturbances had a higher prevalence of MetS (p = 0.029) and abdominal obesity (p = 0.009). After adjusting for age, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, smoking status, alcohol drinking habit, physical habitual exercise, snoring and type of shift work, the police officers who slept less than 5 h were 88% more likely to suffer from abdominal obesity than those who slept 7–7.9 h (95% CI: 1.01–3.5). Sleep quality was not associated with MetS and its components. Conclusions The police officers who slept less than 5 h were more likely to experience abdominal obesity in Taiwan, and those with higher scores of sleep disturbances had a higher prevalence of MetS and abdominal obesity. It is recommended that police officers with short sleep duration or sleep disturbances be screened for MetS and waist circumference in order to prevent cardiovascular diseases.

Introduction and aim. Given the potential relationship between oxidative stress and fibromyalgia and well-documented antioxidant efficacy of zinc, the present study aimed to determine serum zinc concentration in FM patients as compared to healthy controls, as well as to identify the correlation of serum zinc concentration with the body mass index (BMI) and sleep quality. Material and methods. In this case-control study, 54 fibromyalgia patients were consecutively recruited between October 01, 2021 and December 01, 2021. The control group consisted of 54 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Results. Fibromyalgia group had significantly lower zinc concentration, higher body mass index, and lower sleep quality scores as compared to the healthy control group. The correlation analysis revealed a significantly negative correlation between serum zinc concentration and body mass index and a significantly positive correlation between serum zinc concentration and sleep quality both in fibromyalgia and healthy control groups. Conclusion. Our results both support the hypothesis that low serum zinc concentration plays a role in the pathophysiology of fibromyalgia and indicate that fibromyalgia may lead to weight gain and poor sleep quality, which needs to be confirmed in large-cohort studies.

INTRODUCTION: Adequate sleep protects the mental and physical health of individuals while boosting brain and body functions. Significant lifestyle changes due to COVID 19 can affect the sleep quality and level of stress among nurses. The aim of the study was to evaluate the association between sleep quality and perceived stress among nurses during this COVID 19 outbreak. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 292 registered nurses in Sri Lanka through an anonymous online survey. Data were collected using self-administered, structured questionnaire that included Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). SPSS 25 software (version 25) was used for data analysis. RESULTS: The majority (79.8%) were between 26-35 years and females (93.5%). Among all participants, the average hours of sleep per night was 5.50 (±1.07). The results of the PSQI scale revealed that 78.4 % of nurses had poor sleep quality (PSQI > 5points), while 67.1% of nurses had moderate level of perceived stress according to the PSS scale. Pearson’s coefficient correlation demonstrated that, as nurses’ sleep quality decreased, stress level of the nurses increased moderately (r=0.53). CONCLUSIONS: The majority of nurses had poor sleep quality and moderate stress. Furthermore, it showed that there is a moderate positive correlation (r=0.53) between the PSQI global score and the perceived stress scale score.

Opis:
Objectives: To investigate associations between sexual intercourse and sleep quality and duration, controlling for a range of confounders, in a large, representative sample of older English adults. Methods: Data were from 2,743 men and 2,990 women aged ? 50 years, participating in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Participants reported whether or not they had engaged in sexual activity in the last year, and those who were sexually active reported frequency of intercourse in the past month. Information on sleep disturbance and duration and socio-demographic and health-related covariates was also collected. Findings: Being sexually active was not associated with sleep disturbance or sleep duration. Men who had less frequent intercourse reported greater sleep disturbance than those who reported no sexual intercourse (OR=1.29, 95% CI 1.02-1.65), but had lower odds of reporting longer than optimal sleep duration (OR=0.45, 95% CI 0.24-0.86). Men who engaged in sexual intercourse once a week or more (OR=0.43, 95% CI 0.23-0.80) also had lower odds of long sleep relative to those who reported no sexual intercourse. Women who engaged in more frequent (? once a week) intercourse reported less sleep disturbance than those who reported no sexual intercourse in the last month (OR=0.68, 95% CI 0.53-0.86), and women who reported sexual intercourse once in the past month had lower odds of long sleep (OR=0.51, 95% CI 0.26-0.996). Conclusions: In a population-based sample of older men and women in England, there was inconsistent evidence of an association between sexual activity and sleep disturbance and sleep duration.

Sleep is a very important aspect of human life, as it is responsible for regulation of the circadian cycle, body regeneration and reduction of harmful metabolites. Sleep deprivation can be associated with chronic stress, which can have an extremely negative impact on bodily function. The presented study covered 220 students of medical faculties; their correlations between the sleep quality and the level of perceived stress were analyzed. Sleep quality was measured using the PSQI (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), and perceived stress was measured using PSS-10 (10-Item Perceived Stress Scale). A high correlation was shown between the PSQI and PSS-10 results (rs = 0.60), which means that people who were characterized by a low sleep quality also showed a high level of perceived stress. Among the PSQI components that were the most correlated with PSS-10, can be counted in such components as C1 (subjective sleep quality, rs = 0.50), C2 (sleep latency,  rs = 0.51), and C7 (daytime dysfunctions, rs = 0.52). Mobile phone usage at bedtime has also been demonstrated to correlate with poor sleep quality. The study shows a significant relationship between sleep quality and the level of perceived stress, which has also been shown in other studies.

Opis:
Objectives The aim of this study is to assess the sleep quality and sleep disorders (prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea and sleepiness) among occupational drivers in Iran and to determine which demographic factors and occupational habits are linked to road traffic accidents. Material and Methods In this analytic cross-sectional study 556 occupational road drivers from Shahroud city (in the northeast of Iran) participated, upon a prior verbal informed consent, during 2013–2014. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) standard questionnaire that scored on 7 point scale, the 8-item Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) questionnaire and the 8-question STOP-Bang questionnaire along with demographic information and occupational data were used. To explore the independent factors associated with odds of poor sleep quality and road accident, multiple logistic regression models were used. Results Prevalence of previous road accidents, sleepiness while driving, and obstructive sleep apnea scored ≥ 3 in the study, and drivers accounted for 23.8%, 29%, and 24.8%, respectively. The global mean score of sleep quality and excessive sleepiness score were 5.2 and 4.8, respectively. The main factors related to the odds of poor sleep quality were snoring (odds ratio (OR) = 2.34; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.15–4.77), smoking (OR = 2.12; 95% CI: 1.15–3.97), and driving times in a day (OR = 1.12; 95% CI: 1.03–1.21). The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (OR = 1.13; 95% CI: 1.07–1.23) and suffering from apnea (OR = 4.89; 95% CI: 1.07–23.83) were the best predictors for odds (increased risk) of road accidents. Conclusions A considerable proportion of Iranian drivers had records of road accidents; poor sleep quality, sleepiness while driving, and sleep disorder breathing (obstructive sleep apnea – OSA). Snoring, smoking, driving time in a day, excessive sleepiness, and presumably apnea increase the odds of poor sleep quality and road traffic accident for Iranian occupational drivers.

Maritime students spend a certain period of their training on board, depending on their qualifications. Deck officer candidates (deck cadets) must perform an open sea internship on commercial vessels for one year. Deck officers are among to member of crew with important responsibilities to cooperate with the Master during voyage including being involved in navigation and port watches as well as maintenance of the ship and its safety equipment. Deck cadets perform their practical training between academic education periods according to general practice in Turkey. They can be subjected to unusual working hours and rest periods during the mission on the ship. Considering the importance of adequate sleep for productivity, vigilance, sustaining attention and even over-all health and well-being, it is not only sleep quantity but sleep quality is critical. The aim of this study was to investigate of the effect of the long-term onboard training (aprox. 7 months) on the sleep quantity and quality of the maritime students. Data regarding sleep quantity and perceptive quality among the subjects were obtained by using Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). PSQI is a scale providing information on type and violence of sleep disorders and the quality of sleep during the past month. A total of 60 maritime students were asked to fill PSQI before and after onboard training. Demographical information such as age, gender, weight, height and information regarding the internship were also obtained. Of the students 43.3% rated as poor sleeper before the internship and this ratio increased to 73.3% after the internship. A prominent decrease in sleep quality was determined. Sleep duration did not change significantly. This study showed a significant negative effect of onboard training on sleep quality among participants and they did not recover within a month after returning from the sea which indicates potential long term consequencies.

INTRODUCTION: Impaired sleep quality is very common among pregnant women. Research shows that it has many negative consequences. The aim of the study was to assess the quality of sleep of pregnant women in each trimester in comparison to non-pregnant women. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 65 pregnant women and 67 women from a control group participated in an anonymous study. The criteria for inclusion were: 18–35 years of age, lack of recognized and treated mental and chronic disorders, not working in a shift/night shift system. For the study group the additional criterion was a normal pregnancy. The employed tools were: a questionnaire (demographic data, course of pregnancy), scales: Sleep Quality Scale, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, actigraphy. RESULTS: The pregnant women slept more than an hour longer than the control group, however, their sleep quality was worse and daytime sleepiness was more intense. Over 58% of the pregnant women noticed a reduction in their sleep quality compared to the pre-pregnancy state. The factors connected with low sleep quality were: sleep position, night calf cramps, the need to go to the toilet at night, stress, night awakening. CONCLUSIONS: Most pregnant women experience a reduction in sleep quality during pregnancy. In more than 43% of woman reduced quality of sleep was observed and almost 1/3 had a significant increase in daytime sleepiness. Considering the negative effects for both women and children, it would be advisable to pay attention to the problems of impaired sleep quality: education, early screening diagnostics and sleep hygiene. Such a holistic approach may help improve sleep quality in pregnant women.
Kryteriami włączenia były: 18–35 lat, brak rozpoznanych i leczonych chorób psychicznych, przewlekłych, brak pracy w systemie zmianowym/nocnym, a dla grupy badanej dodatkowo ciąża o przebiegu prawidłowym. U ponad 43% kobiet zaobserwowano obniżoną jakość snu, a u prawie 1/3 istotne nasilenie senności dziennej.

MATERIAŁ I METODY: Metodą ankietową i aktygraficzną przebadano 179 zdrowych dorosłych osób w wieku 25–60 lat. Wykorzystano skalę senności Epworth (Epworth Sleepiness Scale – ESS), kwestionariusz jakości snu Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index – PSQI) oraz rejestratory snu MotionWatch 8 wraz z oprogramowaniem MotionWare. Dane analizowano z wykorzystaniem programu Statistica 13.3. WYNIKI: Nasiloną senność zaobserwowano u 7,8% populacji, umiarkowaną u 15,1%, złą jakość snu u 29,7%. Średnie natężenie stresu oscylowało w granicach 3,1 pkt w 5-punktowej skali. Spośród badanych 27,4% doświadczało trudnych i przygnębiających problemów w życiu, z którymi jedynie 45,5% osób potrafiło sobie poradzić.
INTRODUCTION: Stress is ubiquitous and has a multidirectional impact on our health. One of the most visible problems caused by stress is sleep disturbance. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of subjectively assessed stress on objectively and subjectively measured sleep quality and somnolence. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 179 healthy adults aged 25–60 were examined using survey and actigraphy methods. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and MotionWatch 8 dream recorders with MotionWare software were used. The data were analysed using Statistica 13.3 software. RESULTS: Increased sleepiness was observed in 7.8% of the population, moderate in 15.1%, poor sleep quality in 29.7%. The average intensity of stress oscillated around 3.1 pts on a 5-point scale. 27.4% had difficult and depressing problems in life, which only 45.5% of people could cope with. Stress significantly worsened the quality of sleep (PSQI) and the results of the actigraphy tests; difficult problems in life translated into a deterioration of sleep quality (PSQI), somnolence (ESS) and deterioration of the actigraphy record. The ability to cope with stress positively influenced the quality of sleep, the actigraphy record and reduced sleepiness. CONCLUSIONS: Stress significantly worsens the quality of sleep, with a slight impact on daytime sleepiness. Questionnaire methods seem to be better than actigraphy to monitor the impact of stress on sleep quality. Due to the significant impact on sleep quality, it would be advisable to promote stress-coping methods as an effective method to prevent sleep disorders, especially among the working population.

Objective. The aim of the study was to determine the effects of pregabalin premedication on preoperative sleep quality, intraoperative haemodynamic parameters, anesthesia consumption, blood loss, and postoperative pain control in patients over 65 years of age who had undergone surgery for spinal stenosis. The study also aimed to determine whether pregabalin premedication was safe for that age group and compare its effects with those of diazepam. Materials and method. The retrospective study was conducted in a single centre after approval by the local Ethics Committee. The study sample consisted of 95 patients over 65 years of age who had undergone surgery for spinal stenosis. The sample was divided into two groups: Pregabalin premedication patients (PG; n = 45) and Diazepam patients (D; n = 51). Demographic data, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) scores, comorbidities, indications for operation, pre- operative sleep quality, total anaesthesia consumption during surgery, intraoperative haemodynamic parameters and blood loss, time to leaving the post- anaesthetic care unit (Aldrete’s > 9), postoperative visual analog pain scale (VAS), total fentanyl consumption via a patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) device, additional demand for analgesic, first mobilization, first oral intake, and side-effects were recorded. Results. Participants did not significantly differ by demographic data and duration of surgery. The PG group had better sleep quality, lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, intraoperative bleeding, postoperative VAS scores, additional analgesic consumption, and total fentanyl consumption via a PCA, and earlier mobilization and oral intake than the D group. No serious side-effects were observed in the groups. Conclusion. Pregabalin premedication is a safe and effective alternative medication for patients over 65 years of age.

Opis:
Objectives To investigate the effect of CO₂ during sleep on next-morning cognitive performance in young schoolchildren, the authors performed a double-blind fully balanced crossover placebo-controlled study. Material and Methods The authors included 36 children aged 10–12 years in the climate chamber. The children slept at 21°C in 6 groups each at 3 different conditions separated by 7 days in a random order. Conditions were as follows: high ventilation with CO₂ at 700 ppm, high ventilation with added pure CO₂ at 2000–3000 ppm, and reduced ventilation with CO₂ at 2–3000 ppm and bioeffluents. Children were subjected to a digital cognitive test battery (CANTAB) in the evening prior to sleep and on the next morning after breakfast. Sleep quality was monitored with wrist actigraphs. Results There were no significant exposure effects on cognitive performance. Sleep efficiency was significantly lower at high ventilation with CO₂ at 700 ppm which is considered to be a chance effect. No other effects were seen, and no relation between air quality during sleep and next-morning cognitive performance was observed in the children emitting an estimated 10 l CO₂ /h per child. Conclusions No effect of CO₂ during sleep was found on next day cognition. The children were awakened in the morning, and spent from 45–70 min in well-ventilated rooms before they were tested. Hence, it cannot be precluded that the children have benefitted from the good indoor air quality conditions before and during the testing period. The slightly better sleep efficiency during high CO₂ concentrations might be a chance finding. Hence, replication is needed in actual bedrooms controlling for other external factors before any generalizations can be made.

Opis:
INTRODUCTION Sleep disorders are a common and underestimated problem causing educational difficulties. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the impact of sleep quality on students' academic performance and everyday activity. MATERIAL AND METHODS 511 students (31.5% male, 68.5% of women aged 21.7 ± 1.17 years) of the Silesian Medical School were tested by use of a questionnaire. RESULTS The average value of JS was 30.8 ± 4.99 and was correlated with academic performance (r = -0.18, p < 0.0001). 42.8% of students were sleepy during classes 3 or more times per week. This result is correlated with the quality of sleep. Almost 30% of students fell asleep at least once a month during classes. Such students achieve significantly worse grades than those who do not suffer from sleeping disorders. Difficulties in remaining vigilant while driving, eating or participating in social activities was associated with significantly higher values of the JS coefficient. There was no correlation between the quality of sleep and receiving a scholarship or scientific work in a student scientific society. CONCLUSIONS Quality sleep is correlated with academic performance. Sleep disorders can cause measurable losses (worse academic performance, a worse job in the future, lower salary, risk of errors, accidents). Due to the frequency and potential impact of sleep disorders, it would be useful to perform screening and education on sleep hygiene and relaxation.
