Opis:
Understanding human influence on vegetation dynamics is important from both conservation and human management perspectives. The Wieliszewskie Łęgi Reserve, located in central Poland, is a young forest area that was cut off from the flood waters of the Narew river in 1963, but since then has been constantly and intensively supplied with water from overflows under the dike. On the southern side, adjacent to the reserve, there are patches of valuable meadows, rushes and scrub communities. The aim of this study was to determine the degree of synanthropization of the flora in the Wieliszewskie Łęgi reserve and to assess changes occurring in its vegetation. The vascular plant flora of the reserve and its southern vicinity was surveyed in 2017 and the plant communities within the study area were mapped. In the area of the reserve, we observed a total of 264 vascular plant species, whereas for the entire area under study, 314 spe- cies were recorded. Of these, 14 were classified as valuable. The high species richness was mainly due to the presence of a large number of apophytes – native species quickly colonizing sites transformed by man. Therefore the degree of naturalness of the reserve's flora was relatively low, which is most likely due to the lack of refugia for typical forest species. A number of plant communities of non-forest, scrub and forest character, typical for swampy, wet, semixeric as well as dry habitats were recorded. Succession, manifested by the disappearance of non-forest and scrub communities and progression of forest communities, is superimposed on the processes of transformation into semixeric oak-hornbeam communities in the highest areas and carr com- munities in the lowest areas. A low proportion of kenophytes (16 species) and a zero value of the index of fluctuation changes indicate a relative resistance of the reserve to invasion by alien species.

Opis:
In 2014−2015, the General Directorate for Environmental Protection carried out an inventory of natural monuments in Poland. The data collected during this process was used to update and expand the generally available Central Register of Nature Protection Forms (CRFOP). Based on these material, the assignment of nature monuments to particular categories was verified and their number in individual categories was calculated. In addition, the species composition of trees being single monuments of nature and growing in monumental groups and alleys was determined. The total number of monumental trees in Poland was also calculated, with the division into species. For the 50 of most popular individual monument tree species, the minimum, maximum and average circumferences of their trunks were determined. A group of the most impressive monument trees with trunk circumferences exceeding 600 cm was also selected. According to the calculations, there are 36,570 natural monuments in Poland, of which 94% are trees and shrubs (individual trees – 28,304, groups of trees – 551 and alleys – 525). Individual trees natural monuments represent at least 161 species, trees growing in groups of at least 123 species, and trees growing in alleys at least 53 species. The total number of monumental trees growing as single specimens, in groups and alleys is at least 123,784 pieces, with at least 46,636 trees growing in groups, and at least 48,844 trees in alleys. In total, the monumental trees of Poland (growing singly, in groups and alleys) belong to at least 178 species, including 51 gymnosperms and 127 angiosperms. The CRFOP data also shows that there are 1641 trees that have reached or exceeded the trunk circumference of 600 cm, among which there are 77 specimens with a circumference equal to or greater than 800 cm. However these data do not coincide with information available in current literature and they need to be verified. The obtained calculations are the most up−to−date report on the numerical status of trees – natural monuments based on data confirmed by field inventory, and not only on the registers of nature monuments containing often unverified or non−actual data.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to recognise the species composition of bats in two forest stands that differ in terms of habitat type and age class. The study was carried out in the Niepołomicka Forest (southern Poland). An ultrasound ‘time−expansion’ processing system with Pettersson D240× detector was used to identify bat species by their echolocation signals employing SonoBat v.2.9.7 software to analyse bioacoustic spectrograms. We set up 36 recording points located in: old−growth and young plantations within the hygric mixed coniferous forest type (Pino−Quercetum) and hygric deciduous forest type (Tilio−Carpinetum). The measurements were carried out in July 2013, from 8:30 PM to 0.00 AM. The occurrence of nine species of bats were documented (tab.) of which Pipistrellus pygmaeus, P. pipistrellus, Barbastella barbastellus, Myotis myotis, M. emarginatus, and M. daubentonii had not been previously recorded in the Niepołomicka Forest. P. pipistrellus, M. emarginatus, M. daubentonii, and E. serotinus were recorded only in old−growths, whereas Nyctalus leisleri, N. noctula, and P. pygmaeus were found within both habitat types. Only two of the species identified in the study (M. myotis, and B. barbastellus) occurred both in the plantations and old−growth of hygric deciduous forest as well as in hygric mixed coniferous forest. None of the detected species was recorded exclusively in old−growth of hygric mixed coniferous forest type. The occurrence of a given bat species in the studied forest habitats and age classes of forest stands can be associated with the availability of prey, divergent feeding strategies, and with the adaptations affecting the nature of flight and ways of locating prey. The obtained results widened the knowledge of the species composition of bat fauna in the Niepołomicka Forest. At least 13 bat species live here. Apart from the nine species found in this study, four other species were found there in past years (Plecotus auritus, M. bechsteinii, M. brandtii and M. mystacinus).

Opis:
Vertical distribution of species richness of various groups of organisms within trees is still insufficiently understood. The reason for this are, among others, the difficulties in accessing standing trees. The aim of the study was to determine the differentiation of species richness of fungi, lichens and lichenicolous fungi and bryophyte of three tree species (oak, birch and pine) within windthrow areas in the Kampinos National Park (central Poland). Ten individuals of each tree species were chosen. They were only thrown, not broken, without serious damage, still alive and easily accessible. The investigations of species composition were performed in five parts of each tree: trunk bottom, lower trunk, upper trunk, lower crown and upper crown. Individual parts of the trees were measured, than their surface and volume were determined. The species richness of the studied groups of organisms was calculated using rarefaction curves based on the number of samples, volume and area of the distinguished tree parts. Species composition changes of the tree parts were described using non−metric multidimensional scaling. The most important parts of trees for fungi were the crowns of trees, in particular oak’s. The highest richness of lichens was found within the crown of oaks, however they were recorded within all of the distinguished tree parts. The highest richness of bryophytes was recorded in the lower crown of oak and the trunk base of birch, but this group of organisms generally did not inhabit the birch and pine crowns. In the case of rarefaction curves based on the number of samples, the large positive meaning of the oak was observed, however the observed pattern was different when the volume and surface were taken into account. The general species richness of the studied taxa was similar for three tree species, the pine was distinguished positively in case of fungi, birch – in the case of lichens and oak – in the case of bryophytes. The species of trees differ from each other in terms of the species composition of the studied groups of organisms. We also observed the gradual change in the species composition from the base of the trunk to the upper crown.

Opis:
In Polish forest management planning, the species composition of stands in a forest district is established by adding up the volumes of tree species from individual forest stands. These volumes are calculated according to the estimated share of species cover and the estimated volume of the entire forest stand. The species structure of stands in a forest district, established on the basis of such a method, may be different than that obtained from sample plots. The aim of the study was to compare three ways of determining the tree species structure of stands in a forest district. In Method 1, the species composition was estimated on the basis of the volume of trees measured on sample plots as part of a periodic forest inventory based on stratified sampling. The same data were used in Method 2, but the share of species was calculated on the basis of the basal area. In Method 3, the species structure was estimated according to the volume of trees estimated in each forest stand based on the cover of a given species. The empirical material was collected in 53 forest districts. In method 1 and 2, data from an average of 740 sample plots within the forest district were used. In Method 3, data from the forest stand descriptions contained in the database of the State Forests Information System were used. For each forest district, species composition was calculated, including 6 tree species and 8 groups of tree species. For all forest districts, the average shares of individual species and groups of species differed, depending on the applied method (tab. 1). In case of methods 1 and 2, the biggest difference was found for pine – the most numerous species – but it was also big for less numerous ones: birch and oak (tab. 2). In case of methods 1 and 3, the biggest difference in share was also found for pine (tab. 3). The greater the species diversity of a forest district (determined according to Simpson’s index of diversity), the greater was the average difference in the estimated share of an individual species (figs. 1 and 2). The method of determining the species structure in a forest district used in forest management practice nowadays was considered insufficient. It was proposed to establish it in larger units (subclass, age class, forest district) only according to the volume of trees measured on the sample plots (without rounding and ‘switching’ of species), using the stratified sampling method.

Opis:
In the last decades, we observed significant changes in the tree species composition in all layers of close−to−natural stands. Since the 1970s, the Forest Research Institute has collected and stored dataset from stand measurements, phytosociological and other research that are the basis for the long−term monitoring of vegetation. The aim of the research was to determine the directions of changes in the species composition and structure of tree stands, and to analyze the changes in the species composition of natural regeneration growing without human interference in various forest communities in the period of about 40 years. From 2014 to 2017, 40 permanent plots of 0.25 ha were re−measured in the nature reserves of the Knyszyn and Augustów Forests (NE Poland). The diameter of all trees was measured and the trees of the natural regeneration and bushes up to 1.3 m high were counted. The stand similarity index (S) between successive measurements was calculated. The analysis of differences in the composition of tree stands in subsequent measurements was carried out using Student t and Kruskal−Wallis tests. In the species composition of fresh coniferous forest stands and fresh mixed coniferous forest, there were significant changes in the number and share of Scots pine and Norway spruce. In the Knyszyn Forest a significant decrease in the share of spruce was observed. However, an increase in the share of deciduous species was remarkable. An inhibition of the natural pine renewal process and increase in density of spruce regeneration was observed. It is necessary to emphasize the significant expansion of hornbeam in a fresh mixed deciduous forest in the Knyszyn Forest and expansion of hazel in the Augustów Forest. Mean basal area in the forest stands has increased. The similarity index between the beginning and the end of the research reached the value of 0.73−0.94. The species composition and density of natural regenerations created without human intervention are not satisfactory from the point of view of forest sustainability. The most important factor affecting the direction and rate of changes in the species composition of tree stands is the expansion of hornbeam and/or hazel. These species cause changes in the ecological conditions of the lowest forest layers, leading to the unification of the species composition of forest communities.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to assess the changes occurring in the forests of the Kłodzko Region in the recent period (2001−2017), with particular emphasis on the species composition of the stands, their share in age classes and the structure of harvested timber, including live trees, deadwood, wind−broken and wind−fallen trees. The Kłodzko Region located in the Sudety Mountains (SW Poland) covers the forests of four forest districts: Lądek−Zdrój, Międzylesie, Bystrzyca Kłodzka and Zdroje. The declining share of spruce stands (from 83.5% in 2001 to 75.5% in 2017) and the increasing share of beech and larch as well as sycamore stands indicate that these forests are systematically rebuilt. The average age of the stands is very high (81 years). The share of young (<20 years old ) stands is low (only 5%), while those older than 100 years constitute about 35%. The 21st century saw a serious damage to the investigated forests caused by frequent strong winds and long−lasting droughts in the growing seasons. The three hurricanes that took place in the analysed period were the cause of the removal of 1.1 million m3 of timber in the form of wind−broken and wind−fallen trees. The drought in the growing season in 2015 resulted in the salvage harvest of deadwood with a total volume of 1.6 million m3, which corresponds to the volume of four annual allowable cuts determined for the undisturbed growth conditions of trees in the area under research. Using the wind damage risk model, the threat measure Ms reaching a value of above 40 was calculated for the forests of the Kłodzko Region, which are currently among the most threatened in Poland. This threat results mainly from the high share of spruce stands in older age classes with high average height and gaps after previous hurricanes as well as from a large area of stands located at high elevations.

Opis:
The paper describes current (in years 2007−2017) changes of basic parameters of forest stands that constitute the managed part of Białowieża Forest (ca. 53,000 ha), divided into three forest districts: Białowieża (12,600 ha), Hajnówka (19,700 ha) and Browsk (20,400 ha). The investigated tree stands represent different phases of ecological succession, modified by silvicultural treatments and other human activities. The course of the succession processes is varied, depending, first of all, on local site conditions, consisting mainly of fresh sites (ca. 60%) – particularly fresh broadleaved forest, and encompassing exceptionally high fraction of wet and swamp sites (40%) – especially wet broadleaved forest site type. Most stands represent the intermediate, highly productive phase of succession, with spruce and oak as the dominant tree species. In particular, such stands are common in Białowieża and Hajnówka forest districts. Recently, the share of the mentioned stands is declining, most intensely in the Browsk Forest District. In 2017 alone, 430 ha of highly productive forest stands disappeared from the Białowieża Forest. The process of decay involved mixed stands; besides of spruces which were killed by a current bark beetle infestation, also many oaks, pines, birches, alders as well as rare and valuable minor tree species (such as ashes and maples) died. Dying spruce and, more often, oak stands are often replaced by low−productive hornbeam trees, occupying earlier lower stand strata in such stands. The resulting hornbeam stands are often distinguished by low crown closure and low productivity. Tree stands occurring in the Białowieża Forest are among the most endangered by wind damage stands in Poland. It means that in case of strong winds, several trees will be broken and/or uprooted. The intensity of such phenomena will be further increased by the high tree volume of stands as well as by the presence of many gaps in forest canopy, caused by a massive mortality of spruce trees. In general, one may expect that in the nearest future many stands occurring in the Białowieża Forest, built by different tree species, will be subject to a massive decay. The list of factors contributing to this process is long and involves, among other things, recurring droughts during the growing season, unfavorable changes in ground water table and increased frequency of strong winds. All these factors negatively influence the health status of trees, which further favours the development of parasitic fungi and insects. In consequence, there is a high probability that many areas in the Białowieża Forest will, for a long time, retain a treeless character and/or will be occupied by low−productive and single species hornbeam stands.
