Opis:: We have analysed allele distribution at the highly polymorphic variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) locus D1S80 (pMCT118) in the Polish population using the, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique. Characteristics of the D1S80 locus makes it a very useful marker for population genetic research, genetic linkage studies and forensic identification of individuals. During our routine application of the D1S80 marker to paternity testing in several cases of homozygosity detected by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, heteroduplex formation for alleles 18 and 24 was also observed. Direct sequencing of PCR products revealed that alleles 18 and 24 of locus D1S80 actually represent a mixture composed of different sequences. Our observations indicate that identification of some 18 and 24 VNTR alleles based only on size estimated in electrophoretic analyses could lead to errors in paternity testing and DNA profiling.

Opis:: For several years now the Polish Normalisation Committee (PKN) has been angaged in the process of introduction (and implementation) of international standards complying with the Internationsl Standard Organsation (ISO) into the set of of Polish Standards.At present, in the PKN Commission of Soil Physics, a number of such standards are being prepared (translated) -including a very comprehensive standard dealing with partiele size distribution determination in soil material-ISO 11277 [6], Some principles and requirements included in this standard differ significantly from those commonly accepted and widely in use now in numerous pedologie laboratories in Poland [7,8]. Below there are some of the most important differences: (1 ) the requirement to remove organic matter from test samples (using 30% v/v solution of H2O2), (2) the requirement to remove water soluble salts and gypsum (to electrical conductivity 0,4 dS/m), (3) sample dispersion process must be longer than 18 hours. Many other requirements, of relatively lesser importance, in many cases also do not correlate with those commonly accepted in our laboratories.

Opis:: Loiseleuria is a monotypic genus of the family Ericaceae. The only species of this genus, L. procumbens, is an arctic-alpine element with a circumpolar distribution, found in the subarctic zone and in mountain ranges located further south. Results of earlier research on the structure of its fruits and seeds (Szkudlarz 2002) suggested that there are some differences between populations from different parts of its natural range of distribution. To verify this hypothesis, seed dimensions in samples from distant localities were compared in this study. The presented results indicate that in populations from Scandinavia seeds are generally shorter than in central Europe.

Opis:: A Berner cascade impactor was used for the separation of solid urban aerosols in two localities of the Baltic coastal macro-region – Słupsk and Hel – in different seasons and weathers. Ten ranges of aerodynamic diameters between 0.009 and 8.11 μm were used. The elementary composition for each diameter was obtained in a complex procedure consisting of laser ablation of deposits, then their successive ionization in an inductively coupled plasma generator, and finally, mass selection in a quadrupole spectrometer. Despite its complexity, the chemical element analysis method proved to be versatile, allowing the identification air pollution from natural and industrial sources, and road traffic.
