    The term “alternative theatre” assumes the conscious adoption of a critical and rebellious attitude against the existing social and political status quo. What is more, it assumes a desire by artists of the theatre to supplant the existing methods of social communication with other, more creative ways, which better contribute to the self-development of individuals who participate in the process. Here, theatrical performance signifies the wish of theatrical artists to change the structure of their contemporaries’ perception and valorisation of the world. Bearing in mind this preliminary assumptions the authors of the article focus on the selected topics: the concept of alternative theatre, the Polish alternative theatre experience as a part of universal countercultural movement, the outdoor and site specific theatre festivals as a tool for social change and the future prospects of the alternative theatre in Poland.

    Site-specific art has been changing through the years. Firstly, it was connected with its location and directly corresponding with a given site, then critically reconfiguring it. Later it became art that served aesthetic processes in the site, and finally, art that defined the site in a very abstract way (which marked the beginnings of public and community art). Among different paradigms of artistic practices, the latter may take the form of participatory art. Miwon Kwon, Grant Kester and Claire Bishop are considered to be its key theorists. Changes within site-specific practices and their aspiration for a meaningful social context have helped to (re)define the categories of public space, community, and participation. The last of the three has become globally common for artistic practices, without regard for cultural differences, varied political contexts, or issues of funding of this genre of art. Why participatory art is so popular? What kind of impact does it have on the socio-cultural reality? The paper provides an overview of the changes that have taken place within site-specific artistic practices, showing that even a provisionary answer to the above questions cannot be found without an interdisciplinary approach.

    Artykuł poświęcony jest performatywnej twórczości Władysława Hasiora, w szczególności jego działaniom aranżowanym w przestrzeni miejskiej. Potrzeba dialogowania z odbiorcą, początkowo wyrażana przez Hasiora jedynie w eksponatach, począwszy od lat siedemdziesiątych przybiera formę bardzo wyrazistych manifestacji artystycznych zakładających bezpośredni udział widzów w kreowaniu zdarzenia performatywnego, a także znoszenie dystansu między artystą a społeczeństwem. Ze względu na ontologiczny status tych zdarzeń, ich efemeryczny i ulotny charakter, stanowią one jak dotąd najmniej zbadany obszar twórczości artysty. W artykule analizie poddane zostały najważniejsze miejskie i plenerowe performanse Władysława Hasiora, takie jak Pochód sztandarów w Łącku (1973), realizacja Solspann w Södertälje (1973–1976) czy wreszcie uroczysta Przeprowadzka z internatu „Szkoły Kenara” do nowej pracowni w Zakopanem (1984). Działania te autorka rozpatruje w kontekście współczesnych rozważań nad sztuką partycypacyjną, zarówno w świetle antagonistycznej teorii partycypacji Claire Bishop, jak i koncepcji sztuki dialogicznej Granta H. Kestera, zauważając, że Hasior w swoich projektach performatywnych łączył dwie strategie sztuki partycypacyjnej: potrafił współtworzyć efemeryczne dzieła razem z publicznością, a jednocześnie reżyserować działania odbiorców.
    This article discusses the performative art of Władysław Hasior, particularly his actions in the urban space. Initially expressed only in his artworks, since the 1970s Hasior’s need for dialogue with the spectator took the form of very expressive artistic manifestations involving audience participation, direct involvement of spectators in the creation of the performative event, and abolition of the distance between the artist and society. Due to the ontological status of these events, their ephemeral and fleeting nature, they have been the least explored area of Hasior’s work. The article analyzes his most important urban and open-air performances, such as the Procesja sztandarów (Banner Procession) in Łącko (1973), Solspann in Södertälje (1973–1976), and finally the ceremonial Przeprowadzka (Move) from the dormitory of Antoni Kenar school of fine arts to a new atelier in Zakopane (1984). These actions are considered in the context of contemporary discussions on participatory art: Claire Bishop’s antagonistic theory of participation and Grant H. Kester’s concept of dialogical art. It is argued that Hasior’s performative projects combined two strategies of participatory art; he was able to co-create ephemeral works together with the audience, while at the same time directing the spectators’ actions.

    The paper introduces and discusses Strappo ad Asolo from 1973, a site-specific artwork by Dorothee von Windheim along with its vast documentation preserved at the Conz Archive in Berlin. The findings are based on the research in the archive conducted in the fall and winter of 2018 as well as the correspondence with Dorothee von Windheim. In the first part, the figures of the collector and curator Francesco Conz and the artist are introduced. The account of their activities in the early 1970s is followed by the description of their meeting and production of Strappo ad Asolo in 1973. In the latter part of the article, I look closer at the ontology of Dorothee von Windheim’s artwork and its uniqueness in the wider context of the site-specific art of the 1960s and 1970s as well as reflect on the documentation process as a part of the performative site-specific practice. In order to analysie Strappo ad Asolo, the notions of framing (Immanuel Kant, Jacques Derrida, Craig Owens) and index (Rosalind Krauss) are employed. In the final remarks, the importance of Strappo ad Asolo—both for Dorothee von Windheim and for Francesco Conz—is underlined.

     The paper discusses a series of five graffiti pieces made in 2005 on the Israeli-Palestinian separation barrier by the English street artist Banksy. Location is here key to the understanding of the messages. The departure point for my analyses is, on the one hand, the meaning connoted with the ‘wall,’ the aim of which is to separate two peoples in a conflict, and, on the other, the representations of landscapes, often with water, painted by Banksy in most of the works. To answer what symbolic role landscape plays in the conflict-ridden area, I look at some other art works, made by contemporary Israeli artists for whom place, landscape and the related question of identity and belonging seem to play a central role. Painted by Banksy on the Palestinian side, the utopian, Eden-like sights, which ‘make holes’ in the concrete barrier, undermine, in an ironic fashion, the hierarchical discourse of power relations constructed by the ‘opposite’ side, and give ‘water’ to the evicted.

    The term ‘found object’ refers to an existing object or artifact that contemporary artists use in undertaking memory-related themes in their art. Originally, such objects would not have fit in the category of art, although for their finders they might have had value (for instance, for aesthetic or nostalgic reasons, or due to the object’s originality). By means of the found object an artist comments on contemporary culture, constructing an artistic narration that concerns the past and reveals the memories or identities connected with places and people (for instance, site-specific art or community art). Through art collecting, the revelation or discovery of things from the past, artists become custodians of memory and engage in its reconstruction; this may involve either the ‘small’ personal memory or the collective memory, for instance, one based on the history of a location. In the artistic practices analyzed in the article, things also become a means to influence the course of our activities, by evoking memories and the emotions connected with them, awakening the senses and affecting the course of interhuman relations.

Sztuka i teksty niemieckiego artysty Thorstena Goldberga mogą być istotnym wzorem dla innych twórców uprawiających tę dziedzinę sztuki.
    The text shortly describes the phenomenon of art in public space and some examples of such project by German artist Thorsten Goldberg. In the beginning of the text there’s a definition of this phenomenon and writing about the uprising of the field of art and its progress in USA, Poland and Germany. The text contents distinguishes also few different kinds of such art: drop sculptures, site-specific and context-specific projects. The following parts present examples of projects of art in public space which have been created by Thorsten Goldberg. There’s also about its contexts, innovative meanings and importance for the progress of art in public space. Art and texts of the German artist, Thorsten Goldberg could be an important pattern for other artists who work in this field of art.

    The purpose of this article is to provide a wider range of environmental disciplines by highlighting a series of reflections, processes and artistic projects for a sensitive approach to our environment involving a combination of bodily experience and landscape awareness. Sensory Landscapes are based on practical research into progressive action designed to raise awareness and increase our understanding of the natural and human environment through the conception and results of artistic approaches to landscape using senses and experiences. As part of the process, a conductive thread weaves diverse geographies with the sensory experience of touching, smelling, observing, tasting and listening. Throughout this article, various ways of thinking and acting are explored, interweaving disciplines, media and places. At the same time, this article raises a series of questions that broaden the understanding of site-approximation and landscape concepts through a dialogue between artistic practice, critical thinking and environmental mindset. With this in mind, Sensory Landscapes is designed to be a conceptual framework for exploring various perceptions as a medium for approaching a given scenario, connecting tangible and intangible concepts to transform sensual concepts - smells, textures, tastes, sounds, scenes - into experiences.
    Mając na celu wyeksponowanie szerokiej perspektywy dyscyplin środowiskowych, artykuł opisuje serię refleksji, procesów i projektów artystycznych skoncentrowanych na wrażliwym podejściu do środowiska poprzez połączenie doświadczeń cielesnych i świadomości krajobrazu. Sensory Landscapes to autorska praktyka badawcza, której celem jest uwrażliwienie na środowisko naturalne i ludzkie oraz zrozumienie go poprzez konceptualizację i odkrycie artystycznego zbliżenia się do krajobrazu poprzez zmysły i doświadczenia. W trakcie tego procesu przewodząca nić splata różnorodne geografie ze zmysłowym doświadczeniem dotykania, wąchania, obserwowania, smakowania i słuchania. W artykule eksplorowane są różne sposoby myślenia i działania, przeplatające się dyscypliny, media i miejsca. Jednocześnie artykuł ma na celu postawienie serii pytań, które poszerzają rozumienie koncepcji aproksymacji miejsca i krajobrazu poprzez dialog między praktyką artystyczną, krytycznym myśleniem i nastawieniem na środowisko. Z tej perspektywy Sensory Landscapes to rama konceptualna umożliwiająca badanie percepcji jako medium poznawania kontekstu, łącząca materialne i niematerialne koncepcje, które identyfikują terytorium – zapachy, tekstury, smaki, dźwięki, sceny – jako doświadczenia.

    This article attempts to bring about the relationship of sound and space on the basis of changes in musical discourse. This problem is reflected both in the referred texts of selected theoretical and artistic practices. The author’s thesis on the perception of social reality, suggesting that if the world sounded different, it is also contrary to look.

    The first decades of the new millennium have seen an odd return to origins in Shakespeare studies. The Merchant in Venice, a site-specific theatrical production realized during the 500th anniversary year of the “original” Jewish Ghetto, was not only a highlight among the many special events commemorating the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death in 2016, but also a more creative and complex response to historicism. With her nontraditional casting of five Shylocks (developed through collaborations with scholars and students as well as her international, multilingual company), director Karin Coonrod made visible the acts of cultural projection and fracturing that Shakespeare’s play both epitomizes and has subsequently prompted. This article, written by a participant-observer commissioned to capture on video the making and performance of Compagnia de’ Colombari’s six-night run in the Campo del Ghetto Nuovo, explores the way this place is-and indeed, the category of place itself is always - a dynamic temporal construct, defying more complacent attempts at simple return (to home, to the text, to the past). Such a recognition allows nuanced, hybrid forms of multicultural theater and Shakespeare scholarship to emerge, and to collaborate more fruitfully.

    W artykule Manifestacje sztuki publicznej nawiązuję do moich fotograficznych projektów (sub-Park 2014 -... i Dokumenty podróży, 2015-2016). Stawiam pytanie, czy we współczesnej Polsce chcemy patrzeć na przyrodę w wymiarach proksemicznym i historycznym - czy interesuje nas „zieleń ocalała” pozwalająca poznać sposoby widzenia charakterystyczne dla przedwojennych architektów, którzy tworzyli miasta przyłączone do Polski po 1945 r.? Uwaga moja skoncentrowana jest na specyficznej przestrzeni parku Grabiszyńskiego, niegdyś niemieckiego cmentarza, zniszczonego w latach 60. ubiegłego wieku i ostatecznie przekształconego w miejski teren zielony. Analizie twórczej podane zostały wciąż istniejące struktury drzew ujmowane jako anonimowe manifestacje sztuki publicznej. Do udziału w projekcie zaproszona została też społeczność ostańców, mężczyzn i kobiet urodzonych na terenie przedwojennego Wrocławia i okolic, a także Niemców wypędzonych i emigrantów. Rozmawiałem z nimi o parku Grabiszyńskim i fotografowałem ich w kilku parkach Polski i Niemiec. W artykule przedstawione jest też stanowisko nt. formy wizualnej będącej wynikiem relacji społecznych oraz zagadnienie autoreferencji.
    Within the article “Manifestations of public art” and through photographic projects (subPark 2014-..., Travel Documents, 2015-2016), I am asking the question whether modern art needs and strives for nature in proxemic and historical dimension as an area of “salvaged green”, evoking ways of viewing specific to pre-war architects of cities incorporated into Polish borders after 1945. Grabiszyński Park, former German cemetery, demolished in the 1960s, eventually transformed into a green area. Structures of trees are subjected to creative analysis comprised in categories of anonymous manifestations of public art. Community of outliers born within the area of pre-war city and its vicinity as well as expelled Germans and emigrants photographed in several parks of Poland and Germany were invited to participate in the project. The position regarding visual form being the result of social relations and the phenomenon of autoreference has been presented.

    Opis:
    Non-homologous RNA recombination is a process enabling the exchange of genetic material between various (related or unrelated) RNA-based viruses. Despite extensive investigations its molecular mechanism remains unclear. Studies on genetic recombination in brome mosaic virus (BMV) have shown that local hybridization between genomic RNAs induces frequent non-homologous crossovers. A detailed analysis of recombinant structures suggested that local complementary regions might be involved in two types of non-homologous recombination in BMV: site-specific and heteroduplex-mediated. To verify the above hypothesis and better recognize the mechanism of the phenomenon studied we have tested how the putative types of recombination are affected by a specific mutation in the BMV polymerase gene or by changes in RNA structure. The experiments undertaken revealed substantial differences between site-specific and heteroduplex-mediated recombination, indicating that they occur according to different mechanisms. The former can be classified as homology-assisted, and the latter as homology-independent. In addition to local RNA/RNA hybridization, short regions of homology are required for site-specific crossovers to occur. They are most efficiently mediated if one homologous sequence is located at the beginning of and the second just before a double-stranded region. At present it is difficult to state what is the mechanism of heteroduplex-mediated recombination. Earlier it was postulated that strong RNA/RNA interaction enforces template switching by the viral replicase. There are, however, several observations questioning this model and indicating that some other factors, which are still unknown, may influence heteroduplex-mediated crossovers.
