    In the research paradigm focused on the stress-loaded functioning of single-mother families it has been observed that the efficiency of coping with stress depends on many factors, among which social support is one of the most important. Research results show that a higher level of social support is usually associated with more positive indicators of the functioning of an individual. On the basis of this assumption it was expected that social support provided by grandparents would be a significant predictor of mental resilience in adolescent grandchildren from single-mother families – also in conditions differentiated by household type: living with or without grandparents. Studies performed on a sample of 278 adolescents with the Berlin Social Support Scales (BSSS), the Adolescent–Peer Communication Scale, and the Resilience Measurement Scale (SPP-18) have shown that grandparental social support is not the only predictor of adolescents’ functioning.

    The paper shows the condition of research on the engagement of grandparents as a factor protecting a single mother and her family including the adolescent. According to the authors, the involvement of grandparents is one of the best methods of support. It is not only the means to eliminate social exclusion of a single mother and her child but also to encourage those who provide help.     The aim of the study was to determine differences in the assessments of grandchildren and their relationship with grandparents. It was expected that the assessment of support from grandparents would be significantly differentiated in age, sex and place of residence of grandchildren from a single mother's family, and the image of grandparents would be more often described by features of emotional support compared to descriptions of other features of the analyzed support from grandparents. Studies conducted in a group of 138 people showed that a high assessment of perceived instrumental support from grandparents is significantly more often expressed by girls than by boys (p = 0.04). A significantly high assessment of emotional support received from grandparents is more preferred by younger than in the group of older grandchildren (p = 0.01). In contrast, a high assessment of protective support received from grandparents is more preferred by older grandchildren than younger ones (p = 0.02), which seems to be the logical consequence of growing up. In addition, the emotional support received from grandparents is more positively assessed by grandchildren living in the countryside than those from the city (p = 0.03). The results of the studies allowed to determine the differences in the image of grandparents' support in grandchildren from a single mother's family.
    Celem badań było ustalenie różnic w ocenach wnuków ich relacji z dziadkami. Oczekiwano, że ocena wsparcia od dziadków będzie istotnie różnicowana wiekiem, płcią i miejscem zamieszkania wnuków pochodzących z rodziny samotnej matki, a obraz dziadków będzie częściej opisywany cechami wsparcia emocjonalnego w porównaniu do opisów pozostałych cech analizowanego wsparcia od dziadków. Badania przeprowadzone na grupie 138 osób pokazały, że wysoka ocena spostrzeganego instrumentalnego wsparcia od dziadków jest istotnie częściej wyrażana przez dziewczynki niż przez chłopców (p = 0,04). Znacząco wysoka ocena otrzymywanego wsparcia emocjonalnego od dziadków jest bardziej preferowana przez młodszych niż w grupie starszych wnuków (p = 0,01). Natomiast, wysoka ocena wsparcia chroniącego dziadków jest bardziej preferowana przez starszych wnuków niż młodszych (p = 0,02), co wydaje się logicznym następstwem dorastania. Ponadto, otrzymywane wsparcie emocjonalne od dziadków jest korzystniej oceniane przez wnuków zamieszkujących na wsi niż pochodzących z miasta (p = 0,03). Wyniki z badań pozwoliły ustalić różnice w obrazie wsparcia dziadków u wnuków z rodziny samotnej matki.

    Communication with single parent of the same sex was assessed by 64 daughters and 66 sons by using the Parent-Adolescent Communication Scale (PACS). Analysis between parent’s socio-demographic characteristics and their families has showed that mothers with higher education were assessed by daughter as the most communicative and their openness was conditioned by age of adolescents and amount of siblings. In pairs father-son, increase of boys’s age causes open communication in families of younger fathers.

    Maria Skłodowska-Curie (1867–1934) była kobietą o niezwykłych osiągnięciach, podziwiana przez świat nauki za jej czasów całkowicie zdominowany przez mężczyzn. Była też samotną matką i sama odpowiadała za wychowywanie swych córek. Analizę doświadczeń jej samotnego rodzicielstwa realizowanego ponad sto lat temu, w odmiennych od współczesnych realiach społeczno-kulturowych, podjęto dlatego, że wymagania roli na przestrzeni minionych lat pozostają wciąż te same. Dzieci tak samo dziś, jak i sto lat temu oczekują okazywania im miłości, są spragnione spędzania z matką jak najwięcej czasu, potrzebują jej dostępności, dobrej z nią komunikacji, oczekują stworzenia im poczucia bezpieczeństwa, chcą rodzicielskiego autorytetu bez tyranii i zwiększania się z wiekiem marginesu swobody. Analiza takich cech rodziny jak: status materialny, atmosfera domu rodzinnego, dbałość o rozwój fizyczny i intelektualny córek, zakres udzielanej im swobody i zapewniany poziom poczucia bezpieczeństwa umożliwiła wskazanie czynników stymulujących rozwój córek Marii Skłodowskiej-Curie, jak i deficytów w sprawowaniu nad nimi opieki i ich następstw.
    Maria Skłodowska-Curie (1867–1934) was a woman of remarkable achievements, admired by the scientific world, which in her time was entirely dominated by men. She was also a single mother, bearing sole responsibility for the upbringing of her daughters. An analysis of the experiences of her single parenthood a hundred years ago, in a socio-cultural reality different from the current one, was undertaken because the requirements of the role of the mother over the past years remain the same. Both today and a hundred years ago, children expect to show them love, they want to spend as much time with their mother as possible, they need her availability, good communication with her, they expect a sense of security and parental authority without tyranny. They also expect the margin of freedom to increase over time. The analysis of such family features as: the material status, the atmosphere of the family home, the care for the physical and intellectual development of her daughters, the scope of their freedom and the level of security provided, made it possible to indicate the factors stimulating the development of Maria Skłodowska-Curie’s daughters, as well as the deficits in caring for them and their consequences.
