Opis:
In this study we address the preliminary design for the module layout and bill conveyance routes of automatic teller machines (ATMs). We determine a two-dimensional layout for the modules as below that are approximately rectangular if the ATM is viewed from the side. ATMs require the compact placement of modules within the chassis and conveyance routes that smoothly circulate bills. However, the intersection and overlapping of routes by which the bills are conveyed in opposite directions are not allowed. Applying the bottom-left method and route-design-oriented packing method to the layout of the modules and the direction-oriented maze routing expediting branching and interflow of routes to the bill conveyance route, the application orders are optimized simultaneously using genetic algorithms (GAs). Results show that suitable designs for the ATM including the case when modules are selected as well as placed are achievable using the above simultaneous optimization. The design intention is expressible by changing the weights associated with chassis dimensions, route lengths and the number of route bends, which compose the objective function. The proposed method is useful for efficiently advancing the preliminary design of ATMs. Finally, if island models pursuing individual targets are used along with a GA, the design becomes even more efficient.

Opis:
We consider a logistic planning problem for simultaneous optimization of the storage and the delivery. This problem arises in the consolidate shipment using an intermediate storage in a supply chain, which is typically found in the automobile industry. The vehicles deliver the items from the origin to the destination, while the items can be stored at some warehousing facilities as the intermediate storage during the delivery. The delivery plan is made for each day separately, but the storage at a warehouse may last for more than one day. Therefore, the entire logistic plan should be considered over a certain period for the total optimization. We formulate the storage and delivery problem as a mixed integer programming. Then, we propose a relax-and-fix type heuristic method, which incrementally fixes decision variables until all the variables are fixed to obtain a complete solution. Moreover, a semiapproximate model is introduced to effectively fix the variables. Based on the formulation, the delivery plan can be solved for each day separately. This has the advantage especially in the dynamic situation, where the delivery request is modified from the original request before the actual delivery day. Numerical experiments show that the simultaneous optimization gives the effective storage plan to reduce the total logistic cost, and the proposed heuristics efficiently reduce the computational time and are robust against the dynamic situation.

Opis:
Optimization of the impact multi-mass vibration absorbers. The problem of attaching dynamic vibration absorber (DVA) to a discrete multi-degree-of-freedom or continuous structure has been outlined in many papers and monographs. An impact damping system can overcome some limitations by impact as the damping medium and impact mass interaction as the damping mechanism. The paper contemplates the provision of DVA with the several of the impact masses. Such originally designed absorbers reduce vibration selectively in maximum vibration mode without introducing vibration in other modes. An impact damper is a passive control device which takes the form of a freely moving mass, constrained by stops attached to the structure under control, i.e. the primary structure. The damping results from the exchange of momentum during impacts between the mass and the stops as the structure vibrates. The paper contemplates the provision of the impact multi-mass DVA’s with masses collisions for additional damping. For some cases of DVA optimization such a design seems more effective than conventional multi-mass DVA with independent mass moving. A technique is developed to give the optimal DVA’s for the elimination of excessive vibration in harmonic stochastic and impact loaded systems.

Suppose there are a number of decision variables linearly related to a set of outcome variables. There are at least as many outcome variables as the number of decision variables since all decisions are outcomes by themselves. The quality of outcome is evaluated by a utility function. Given desired values for all outcome variables, decision making reduces to “solving” the system of linear equations with respect to the decision variables; the solution being defined as decision variable values such that maximize the utility function. This paper proposes a family of additively separable utility functions which can be defined by setting four intuitive parameters for each outcome variable: the desired value of the outcome, the lower and the upper limits of its admissible interval, and its importance weight. The utility function takes a nonnegative value within the admissible domain and negative outside; permits gradient methods for maximization; is designed to have a small dynamic range for numerical computation. Small examples are presented to illustrate the proposed method.

Opis:
A loss function is proposed for solving box-constrained inverse problems. Given causality mechanisms between inputs and outputs as smooth functions, an inverse problem demands to adjust the input levels to make the output levels as close as possible to the target values; box-constrained refers to the requirement that all outcome levels remain within their respective permissible intervals. A feasible solution is assumed known, which is often the status quo. We propose a loss function which avoids activation of the constraints. A practical advantage of this approach over the usual weighted least squares is that permissible outcome intervals are required in place of target importance weights, facilitating data acquisition. The proposed loss function is smooth and strictly convex with closed-form gradient and Hessian, permitting Newton family algorithms. The author has not been able to locate in the literature the Gibbs distribution corresponding to the loss function. The loss function is closely related to the generalized matching law in psychology.

Opis:
This note points out that a utility maximization procedure proposed in an earlier paper may be reduced to the least squares. The utility function is asymmetric in the sense that for each cue its ideal value and the permissible range are assigned in such a way that the ideal is not necessarily at the center of the range, like "a beer of 350 ml would be ideal, but acceptable if within [100, 500]". A practical consequence of the observation is that very little programming will be needed to deploy the utility maximization since software for the least squares is widely available.

Opis:
The method of least squares is extended to accommodate a class of loss functions specified in the form of function tables. The function tables are embedded into the standard quadratic loss function so that nonlinear least squares algorithms can be adopted for loss minimization. This is an alternative to a more straightforward approach which interpolates the function tables and minimizes the resulting loss function by some generic optimization algorithm. The alternative approach has advantages over the straightforward, such as the wider availability of the least squares programs compared to the generic optimization programs and reduction in computational complexity. Examples are given for its application to multiplicative utility function maximization problems.

Opis:
Fuel ethanol production, using a simultaneous saccharification and fermentation process (SSF) of native starch from corn flour, has been performed using Saccharomyces cerevisiae and a granular starch hydrolyzing enzyme. The quantitative effects of mash concentration, enzyme dose and pH were investigated with the use of a Box-Wilson central composite design protocol. Proceeding from results obtained in optimal fermentation conditions, a kinetics model relating the utilization rates of starch and glucose as well as the production rates of ethanol and biomass was tested. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was applied to investigate corn starch granule surface after the SFF process. A maximum ethanol concentration of 110.36 g/l was obtained for native corn starch using a mash concentration of 25%, which resulted in ethanol yield of 85.71%. The optimal conditions for the above yield were found with an enzyme dose of 2.05 ml/kg and pH of 5.0. These results indicate that by using a central composite design, it is possible to determine optimal values of the fermentation parameters for maximum ethanol production. The investigated kinetics model can be used to describe SSF process conducted with granular starch hydrolyzing enzymes. The SEM micrographs reveal randomly distributed holes on the surface of granules.

The impact of COVID-19 on the transportation costs of a large-scale company has been examined. Before the pandemic, shift personnel were transported to the factory by shuttles, and after a quick shift change, other shift personnel were transported back to their homes. However, with the implementation of laws mandating the reduction of shuttle seat capacities, transportation costs have risen significantly. To address this issue, a new simultaneous pickup and delivery model is proposed as an alternative to the separate transportation of shift workers. The results of this study indicate that the proposed model provides a substantial advantage in terms of both the number of vehicles used and the total distance traveled, leading to a significant reduction in costs. This research underscores the importance of effective operations research practices for the profitability of companies, particularly in extraordinary circumstances such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Opis:
This paper considers the problem of robust reconstruction of simultaneous actuator and sensor faults for a class of uncertain Takagi–Sugeno nonlinear systems with unmeasurable premise variables. The proposed fault reconstruction and estimation design method with H∞ performance is used to reconstruct both actuator and sensor faults when the latter are transformed into pseudo-actuator faults by introducing a simple filter. The main contribution is to develop a sliding mode observer (SMO) with two discontinuous terms to solve the problem of simultaneous faults. Sufficient stability conditions in terms linear matrix inequalities are achieved to guarantee the stability of the state estimation error. The observer gains are obtained by solving a convex multiobjective optimization problem. Simulation examples are given to illustrate the performance of the proposed observer.
