Opis:
In mid-scale and large five axis overhead gantry type milling machines, the vertical z-slide (ram) often constitutes one of the most sensitive and critical components regarding stiffness, structural vibrations and thermal influences. During machining, the z-slide is loaded by (quasi-) static process and drive forces, transient acceleration forces, periodic excitations by the tool engagement, as well as by thermal effects resulting from altering ambient conditions, heated chips, cooling lubricant and power losses in drives, guides and bearings. Deflections, thermal deformations and vibrations of the z-slide lead to geometric machining errors and inacceptable surface location errors at the workpieces. Furthermore, instable cutting conditions and regenerative chatter limit applicable material removal rates and, thus, productivity. In this work, a newly developed hybrid material structure for an exemplary z-slide, involving metal parts and mineral cast, is introduced. Structural optimization methods as well as process simulation techniques were applied in order to derive the final design solution. The integration of active cooling circuits for thermal stabilization is investigated and the use of fibre optical strain sensors is analysed with respect to a state monitoring of the machine tool component.

Opis:
Real-time computer simulation of a power system’s operating conditions requires the use of mathematical modelling algorithms that guarantee the execution of calculations in an assumed time and with an assumed precision. A power transformer is a power system’s basic element, the mathematical model of which is relatively complex (magnetic couplings, non-linear magnetization characteristics). Computer simulation of a transformer’s operating conditions is meant as a numerical representation of its operation. Simulation stability is another important issue in the context of the simulators’ operation in real time. This paper presents a stability analysis of real-time simulation using the numerical integration trapezoid algorithm for mathematical modelling of power transformers.
Komputerowa symulacja stanów pracy systemów elektroenergetycznych w czasie rzeczywistym wymaga stosowania algorytmów modelowania matematycznego, które będą gwarantowały wykonanie obliczeń w założonym czasie i z określoną precyzją.

Opis:
Since the beginning of the 21st century floating buildings have been growing in popularity in Poland. According to market research and quantitative studies, the majority of operative Polish floating buildings serve for commercial purposes, such as short-term rentals, vacation houses and floating marinas. Simultaneously, despite the increasing demand, the development of floating buildings in Poland is limited by the inconsistent legislation, government policy and, most importantly, natural conditions of Polish inland waters. The most attractive sites for floating architecture are the semi-natural lakeshores and riverbanks. At the same time, low water levels and poor maintenance of many Polish basins require special architectural and engineering solutions. The article presents our experience with meeting the market’s demand for small cost-effective floating commercial buildings despite the local shortcomings of inland waters on the example of the floating apartment built in 2019 on the Roś Lake in Pisz, Poland. The presented building was intended as a water-based extension of the existing hotel on land. It was designed as a “modern barn” with all-glazed gable wall allowing for a spectacular view to the lake. With a 50 sqm footprint, the one-story house with a mezzanine has a small draft of 33 cm and meets the stability criteria defined for inland waters. The presented case study shows that integrating the naval architecture theory, Building Information Modeling simulation along with cutting-edge construction techniques such as Scottsdale Construction System (SCS) and polyurethane spray insulation, can bring significant progress into the development of the floating buildings market in Poland.

Learning from the motion principle of quadrotor, a symmetric propeller AUV, which has small size and low velocity is designed. Compared with the AUV equipped with rudders, it has better maneuverability and manipulation at low velocity. According to the Newton-Euler method, the 6 DOF kinematic model and dynamic model of the propeller AUV are established. A stability controller that consists of 3 different PID controllers is designed. It makes the depth and attitude angle as trigger conditions, and the relevant controller is chosen in different moving process. The simulation experiments simulate ideal motion state and disturbed motion state, and experiments results show that the stability controller based on combined sections method can make the best of mature technology of PID, and meet the control requirements in different stages. It has a higher respond speed and accuracy, improving the stability of the propeller AUV under the disturbance of complex ocean currents.

Opis:
Passenger cars are a means of transportation used widely for various purposes. The category that a vehicle belongs to is largely responsible for determining its size and storage capacity. There are situations when the capacity of a passenger vehicle is not sufficient. On the one hand, this insufficient capacity is related to a paucity in the space needed for stowing luggage. It is possible to mount a rooftop cargo carrier or a roof basket on the roof of a vehicle. If a vehicle is equipped with a towbar, a towbar cargo carrier can be used for improving its space capacity. These accessories, however, offer limited additional space, and the maximal load is determined by the maximal payload of the concerned vehicle. If, on the other hand, there is a requirement for transporting a load with a mass or dimensions that are greater than what could be supported using these accessories, then, provided the vehicle is equipped with a towbar, a trailer represents an elegant solution for such demanding requirements. A standard flat trailer allows the transportation of goods of various characters, such as goods on pallets, bulk material, etc. However, the towing of a trailer changes the distribution of the loads, together with changes of loads of individual axes of the vehicle–trailer axles. The distribution of the loads is one of the key factors affecting the driving properties of a vehicle–trailer combination in terms of driving stability, which is mainly a function of the distribution of the load on the trailer. This research introduces a study into how the distribution of the load on a trailer influences the driving stability of a vehicle–trailer combination. The research activities are based on simulation computations performed in a commercial multibody software. While the results presented in the article are reached for a particular vehicle–trailer combination as well as for a particular set of driving conditions, the applicability of the findings can also be extended more generally to the impact that the load distributions corresponding to various vehicle–trailer combinations have on the related parameters and other driving properties.

In this article, the dynamic responses of heat exchanger networks to disturbance and setpoint change were studied. Various control strategies, including: proportional integral, model predictive control, passivity approach, and passivity-based model predictive control were used to monitor all outlet temperatures. The performance of controllers was analyzed through two procedures: 1) inducing a ±5% step disturbance in the supply temperature, or 2) tracking a ±5°C target temperature. The performance criteria used to evaluate these various control modes was settling time and percentage overshoot. According to the results, the passivity-based model predictive controllers produced the best performance to reject the disturbance and the model predictive control proved to be the best controller to track the setpoint. Whereas, the ensuing performance results of both the PI and passivity controllers were discovered to be only acceptable..

The static bias error angle obviously affects pre-pointing links’ stability in the presence of vibration in intersatellite laser communication. The 2nd order point-ahead angle is a source of misalignment which was ignored in most solutions, and this is the concern of our paper. In this study, we present a further analytical investigation into the point-ahead angle in complex satellite maneuvering environment. Static bias error angle induced by the 2nd order point-ahead angle has been studied under different intersatellite links. The probability density function of the pre-pointing links’ outage has been derived in the presence of pointing jitter taking consideration of the static bias angle, and the link budget has also been analyzed. Simulation model of link stability has been established to verify the numerical results by the Monte Carlo method in Matlab-Simulink environment. The results have shown that the 2nd order point-ahead angle has a significant detrimental impact on link stability in long distance links. It is a neglectable factor. This work is dedicated to intersatellite laser communication system design.

The structure of thin water films during the rupture process was investigated by a new approach, which combines molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) with image processing analysis. The analysis procedure was developed to convert MDS trajectories to readable 3D images. The water films were studied at different thicknesses by MDS to determine the critical thickness at which the film ruptures. The potential energy of each specific film thickness during the simulation time was analyzed, and the results showed that the potential energy of stable films remained unchanged while the potential energy kept decreasing for films which ruptured during the simulation time. By applying the new procedure, the molecular porosity, which is defined as the void fraction between the volume of molecular pores in the water film and the total volume of the water film, was calculated. The results of molecular porosity for different film thicknesses during the simulation time suggested a critical molecular porosity as 49%. In other words, stable films have a molecular porosity of less than 49%. If a water film has a molecular porosity greater than 49%, rupture occurs during the simulation.

During the currently ongoing development of methods for assessing the safety of ships, it is imperative that a compromise between the accuracy of the results and the accessibility of obtaining results is reached. This paper shows the calculations of a theoretical hull against damage stability regulations as included in SOLAS 2020, ICLL 66/88 as amended in 2003 and MARPOL 78. The rules included in the currently valid regulations require certain righting arm curve properties from vessels before and after potential damage, which does not pose a high difficulty level to engineers. However, for many engineers and scientists working with these rules, it is unclear what kind of behavior (particularly roll motion) these righting arm curve parameters correspond. In this paper, a correlation between the required GZ properties and the actual roll motion of a ship in waves, as calculated with the well-established method proposed by the ITTC, is revealed, and a comparison of the results to the currently in use regulations as well as comparison between the methods themselves is made. The comparison reveals the impact of GZ curve parameters on the roll motion of the ship.

Opis:
In the development stage of a rail vehicle, analyses to evaluate its dynamic stability are required. In this work, a newly designed Diesel-Hydraulic Locomotive is modelled as a multibody system consisting of several rigid bodies interconnected by elastic elements. Multibody dynamic analysis of the system is performed to obtain the dynamic response and stability evaluation. Stability on tangent and curve tracks as well as the Locomotive dynamic response is investigated. The stability on tangent track is limited by the locomotive critical speed, Vcr, evaluated for various wheel conicity and primary suspension stiffness. Operation beyond this critical speed will result in hunting which could lead to wheel-climb. Stability evaluation on the curve track is conducted through simulation of the model negotiating a curve with rail irregularity for various radii. The maximum and minimum velocities for negotiating the curve are evaluated. To evaluate the derailment safety on the curve track, the wheel-rail contact force ratio in lateral and vertical directions (L/V), and the loading-unloading ratio of the primary suspension in the vertical direction are computed, and are compared to limiting criteria. The results are found to meet the safety criteria. The guiding lateral force on the wheel entering a curve track for various primary suspension stiffnesses is also evaluated because its effect on wear rate of the wheel and rail. While lower stiffness value of the primary suspension results in favourable L/V and lower guiding force, it yields lower critical speed on tangent track. Hence, a parametric study of the primary suspension stiffness is conducted to obtain optimum value which yield acceptable critical speed and guiding force, yet still meet the safety criteria.

Dynamic process of PLL locking is fairly complex because of nonlinearity and specific mode of system operation. This is why a working model of PLL has been created which can be used for PLL circuit optimisation for a given application. The PLL model has been created using MICROCAP [1] the universal electronic circuit simulator. LPG storage tanks may be seriously threatened by a fire coming from nearby fuels or by leakage appearance. The aim of the study was to prepare a three-dimensional model of LPG release on a car gas station under different environmental conditions. CFD simulations of liquid and gas phase release from a tank localized on a car gas station was performed. First, ALOHA software was applied to determine mass flow rate, while Ansys software was used to determine the shape and size of hazardous zone. To reflect real condition atmospheric stability classes were applied. It was observed that for classes A-D the hazardous zone was decreasing. While, for E and F class the range was increased. It was noticed that the location of the leakage affects the extent of the danger zone. For the leaking below the liquid surface analyzed LPG has liquid form. While, for the leaking above the liquid surface analyzed LPG has gas form. Furthermore, for liquid leakage the largest hazard zone of release was observed.

Since safety of navigation is related to the stability performance of a ship, the transverse stability is routinely calculated and measured. One of the crucial experimental approach is a roll decay test. Although, an obtained result of the roll decay test carried out on the full-scale ship needs to be compared to a benchmark enabling an estimation of the relevant stability. Nowadays such a benchmark is just based on the simplified GM-based IMO-recommended formula. This research aims at the more sophisticated method of ship’s natural period of roll estimation and thus her stability assessment. The CFD (computational fluid dynamics) technique is applied and the result of the free roll simulation is compared to the solution of a roll equation. The one degree-of-freedom roll equation is applied with regard to the nonlinear ship righting moment and the nonlinear damping moment obtained according to Ikeda’s method. The six degrees-of-freedom simulation of ship’s roll decay test was carried out by the use of FlowVision code utilizing the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equation with regard to the turbulent flows based on the eddy viscosity concept. The semi-empirical k-ε turbulence model was applied. Thereby, the CFD-based approach allows to get rid of any assumptions regarding the value of the damping coefficient, which is an advantage over the roll equation based approach.
