The article presents the impact of viscosity of fuel on its atomization, which constitutes an important element of controlling the quality of the fuel-air mixture in compression ignition and direct injection engines. An experiment has been made using a three-hole atomizer of an engine with nominal power of 110 kW and revolutions n = 2800 min-1. Fuel was delivered by a PRW-2M injection pump intended for testing injectors. Fuel was sprayed in the atmospheric air. Three petroleum product liquids used for the experiment had a viscosity of, respectively, 3.93, 16.73 and 36.41 mm2/s. The fuel droplet size in a spray was determined by the laser diffraction method by means of a Spraytec STP 5929 analyzer. The quantity adopted for comparative purposes was the Sauter Mean Diameter D32. The results confirmed that a change of fuel viscosity within the range recommended by ship engine manufacturers has a strong impact on the size of sprayed fuel droplets. Shipowners have a limited choice of low sulphur fuel grade (up to 0.1% S), which forces the engine room personnel to use currently available fuels. Depending on the supplier, marine fuels may vary in viscosity and, according to the recommendations of engine manufacturers, they do not require heating. The increase in the size of the droplets injected into the fuel combustion chamber may affect the quality of the fuel-air mixture, increase of fuel consumption and a greater content of harmful exhaust constituents.

Presented paper shows the results of the laboratory tests on the relationship between the extreme throttling of both air intake duct and exhaust gas duct and gaseous emission from the marine engine. The object of research is a laboratory, 4-stroke, DI diesel engine, operated at loads from 50 kW to 250 kW at a constant speed equal to 750 rpm. During the laboratory tests the thermodynamic and exhaust gas emission characteristics of the engine were measured with technical condition recognized as "working properly" and with simulated throttling of both air intake duct and exhaust gas duct. Air intake duct throttling by 60% causes visible changes at both gas temperature and pressure behind the intercooler. The study results show significant changes of NOx and CO2 emission for considered air intake duct throttling. The best indicator of exhaust gas duct throttling among considered thermodynamic parameters of the engine is mean in-cylinder pressure. In the case of measuring the composition of exhaust gas, the throttling of the exhaust gas duct causes visible changes in CO2 and NOx emission. The conclusion is that the results of measurements of the composition of the exhaust gas may contain valuable diagnostic information about the technical condition of air intake and exhaust gas duct of the marine engine.

W artykule omówiona została problematyka zanieczyszczenia atmosfery związkami toksycznymi emitowanymi przez statki, głównie przez okrętowe silniki tłokowe, stosowane powszechnie zarówno do napędu głównego statków jak i w elektrowniach statkowych. Zarówno rozwój transportu morskiego jak i troska o środowisko naturalne spowodowały, że w latach 90-tych ubiegłego wieku podjęto w Międzynarodowej Organizacji Morskiej (IMO) prace nad aneksem VI do konwencji MARPOL 73/78. Poprzez stosowanie w praktyce określonych w aneksie norm ograniczenia emisji związków toksycznych, oczekuje się wymiernych korzyści dla środowiska. W artykule na podstawie omówionych wyników badań własnych wskazano, jako jedną z metod ograniczenia emisji do atmosfery związków toksycznych, zasilanie silników okrętowych mieszaninami paliwa ropopochodnego z estrami oleju roślinnego. W badaniach stosowano mieszaninę okrętowego oleju napędowego (MDO) z estrem oleju rzepakowego (RME) w różnych proporcjach.
The paper discusses problems of air pollution by toxic compounds emitted by ships, mainly by marine piston engines, which are commonly used both for main propulsion of ships and in power plants ships. Both, the development of marine transport and care for the environmental caused that in the 90s of the last century in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has been undertaken work to develop the Annex VI of MARPOL 73/78. Through using in practice, standards reduce emissions of toxic compounds, which it is set out in the Annex, environmental benefits are expected. In the paper, on the basis discussed of own research results, indicated as one way to reduce atmospheric emissions of toxic compounds, combustion in marine diesel engine mixtures of petroleum fuel from vegetable oil esters. In the research mixture of marine diesel oil (MDO) with an of rape-seed oil methyl ester (RME) in different proportioned was used.

The paper presents the possibility of applying the theory of semi-Markov processes to determine the limiting distribution for the process of changes of technical states being reliability states of the systems of sea-going ships significantly affecting safety of such ships, which include main engine, propeller and steering gear. The distribution concerns the probabilities of occurrence of the said states defined for a long time of ship operation (t → ∞). The considered states are as follows: s0 – full ability state of the systems, i.e.: main engine, propeller and steering gear, s1 – inability state of the main engine, s2 – inability state of the propeller, s3 – inability state of the steering gear. Significance of the systems for safety of the ships at sea was demonstrated herein. General conditions for performing transportation tasks by the ships, with particular regard to stormy conditions, were also here described.

Opis:
Basing on the evolution of application of different kinds of fuel supplying main engines of gas carriers, this article justifies the need to compare the qualities of these engines. Mass-size, energy and energy-ecological effectiveness indicators have been defined. Properties of self-ignition engines run on one or two kinds of fuel have been considered. Values of key performance indicators have been estimated. On the basis of the identified sets of indicators, comparative analysis of a dual fuel engine with single fuel ones has been carried out.
Posługując się ewolucją zastosowania różnych rodzajów paliw zasilających silniki główne gazowców, w artykule uzasadniono potrzebę konfrontacji cech tych silników. Zdefiniowano wskaźniki efektywności masowo-gabarytowe, energetyczne i energetyczno-ekologiczne. Rozpatrzono cechy silników o zapłonie samoczynnym zasilanych jednym i dwoma rodzajami paliw. Oszacowano wartości kluczowych wskaźników efektywności. W oparciu o zidentyfikowane zbiory wskaźników przeprowadzono analizę porównawczą cech silnika dwupaliwowego z jednopaliwowymi.

The development of combustion systems construction is associated with the possibility of increasing the thermal or overall efficiency of an internal combustion engine. The combustion systems currently in use (mainly related to direct fuel injection) are increasingly being replaced by hybrid systems, including direct and indirect injection. Another alternative is the use of prechambers in new combustion systems. This article concerns the thermodynamic aspect of this issue – namely, the assessment of the inter-chamber f low of a marine engine equipped with a prechamber combustion spark ignition system. The research was carried out using mainly one-dimensional simulation apparatus, and detailed analyses were presented using three-dimensional modeling. The tests included the engine model at medium load. Differences in mass f lows were shown at different diameters and different numbers of holes from the preliminary chamber (while maintaining the same cross-sectional area). Similar values of excess air coefficient during ignition of the fuel dose in the prechamber were observed, which resulted in changes in the f low between the prechamber and the main chamber. The differences in mass f low affected the temperatures achieved in the individual combustion chambers. Based on three-dimensional analyses, the mass transfer rate between the chambers and the temperature distribution were assessed during fuel ignition initiated in the prechamber.
