Opis:
Ordered nanocrystalline titania-mesoporous silica nanotube structures are synthesized by hydrolysis of the titania precursor inside pours silica shell. Silica coating surrounding carbon nanotubes was further removed by thermal reduction. The proposed method of functionalization silica channels with the titania nanoparticles preclude aggregation of TiO2  nanoparticles. The nanocrystalline silica/titania (mt-SiO2 /TiO2 ) nanotubes were prepared according to the describe method has high specific surface area and possesses excellent photocatalytic properties capable of decomposing phenol and methylene blue in a short time. Since the nanocrystalline TiO2  is produced in the wall of the mesoporous silica tube, phenol or dye molecules can react with TiO2  nanoparticles from both the inside and outside.

Opis:
Optical waveguides (WGs) are widely used as interconnects in integrated optical circuits both for telecommunication and sensing applications. There are different kind of optical WG designs that offers different guiding parameters, opening a vast number of possibilities. A silica-titania (SiO₂:TiO₂) rib WG is discussed and examined by a numerical analysis in this article with a great emphasis on the analysis of bending losses and optimization. A modal analysis for different basic parameters of the WG is presented with a detailed wavelengthbased modal analysis. Various potential fabrication methods are discussed, however, a solgel method and dip-coating deposition technique are proposed for the low-cost development of such WGs. Moreover, an approach towards minimizing the bending losses by adding an upper cladding layer on the rib WG is presented and described.

Opis:
Over the last two decades nanotechnology has become one of the most dynamically evolving field of research. The unique properties of nanomaterials, not disclosing at microscale, are examined and exploited to extend our understanding of the interactions taking place at atomic or molecular level. Those findings affect research in many areas, like e.g. alternative energy sources, electronics, physics and medicine. In this paper, the possibility of using nanomaterials for the enhancement of photodynamic activity, is discussed. A brief review on drug-delivery facilitating nanomaterials, regarding their characteristic features, is presented. An exemplary application of silver-doped nanomaterials for enhancement of photodynamic properties of two photosensitizers: Photolon and Protoporphyrin IX, is described. Influence of silver-doped nanomaterials addition on the fluorescence intensity of photosensitizers immobilized in silica-titania (SiO2-TiO2) sol was examined via VIS spectroscopy. Influence of sonication on the fluorescence enhancement was also investigated. It was demonstrated that the fluorescence enhancement of photosensitizers depends on the concentration of both: photosensitizer and silver-doped nanoparticles.

Opis:
The mixed $SiO_2$-$TiO_2$ oxide obtained by the pyrogenic method with the silica:titanium percentage ratio equal to 20:80 (ST80) was used in the experiments. The influence of azo dye C.I. Direct Yellow 142 (DY) adsorption at the mixed oxide-solution interface on the electrokinetic properties of solid particles was studied. To determine solid surface charge density and zeta potential of examined suspensions the potentiometric titration and Doppler laser electrophoresis techniques were applied. The changes in structure of electrical double layer formed on the mixed oxide surface in the dye presence were specified as a function of DY concentration, inorganic salt addition and surfactant introduction. The effects of surfactant type and its concentration were determined. Three surfactants of different ionic character (anionic SDS, cationic CTAB and nonionic Triton X-100) were used in measurements. The obtained electrokinetic characteristics of ST80 mixed oxide dispersed in aqueous solutions with various adsorbate compositions is essential for such suspensions stability.

Opis:
The application of photocatalytic processes for the decontamination treatment of polluted water has inspired very extensive studies. Titanium dioxide with its large band gap energy and appropriate redox potential was found as one of the most promising semiconductors for the photodegradation of pollutants in the water as well as in gas phase. The titania-silica aerogels obtained by a simple co-hydrolysis method was applied in the photodegradation of the model organic compound. Different ageing times and heat treatment temperatures were found to influence both the activity and the textural properties of the photocatalysts. The obtained aerogels are efficient photodegradation catalysts of methylene blue and allow a removal up to 98 and 78% of the model pollutant from 20 and 500 ppm solutions, respectively.

Opis:
In this work, at first large pore size SiO₂ mesostructure was prepared using amphiphilic triblock copolymer (P123) as a template, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as Si source and hexane as micelle expander by hydrothermal procedure. Separately, a stable transparent titania sol was synthesized using titanium isopropoxide (TTIP) as titanium source. Then achieved mesoporous silica structure was stirred in the titania sol resulting in formation of a titanium dioxide anatase layer on the silica structure. The sample was characterized with wide angle X-ray diffraction, N₂ adsorption-desorption analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy maps of silicon and titanium. The photocatalytic performance of prepared composite material was evaluated using UV-vis spectroscopy as well. The prepared material showed much higher photodegradation of methyl blue (MB) than commercial P-25 which was attributed to high surface area (290 m²/g), anatase phase, small crystallite size and accessible pores.
