Opis:
Introduction. Abdominal ultrasound is considered an initial examination of the the gastrointestinal tract. The case is presented in which ultrasound (US) detected a ‘pseudokidney’ sign that enabled the tentative diagnosis of a colonic neoplastic lesion. Case report. A 78-year-old patient was admitted to the Department of Internal Diseases due to weight loss and anaemia. US demonstrated abnormalities in the form of intestinal wall thickening with a hyperechoic centre. This finding led to the tentative diagnosis of a neoplastic lesion. After further diagnostic procedures, i.e. colonoscopy and histopathological examination of biopsy specimens, the patient was diagnosed with colon adenocarcinoma. Conclusions. In many cases, experienced US radiologists can initially assess the intestinal wall and other organs, which effectively directs towards further diagnostic management, hence accelerates the diagnosis and decision to apply a given therapeutic option or otherwise.

The article is devoted to the signed narratives created by the deaf communities and presents the attempt of genology of sign narratives they are divided into: deaf-lore (storytelling), cinematographic stories, signed songs and stories with constraints (e.g. ABC or number stories). The main corpus of artwork described and analyzed in the article is signed in American Sign Language, but author tried to take into consideration Polish Sign Language works as well. Apart from the genres and types of the signed narratives author tries to place them in a broader context. Most important is the doubt whether deaf narratives may be considered literature at all, as they do not use words and letters in traditional way. The influence of the moving picture technology is also considered as a powerful boost to the signed narratives.

The purpose of the article is to draw attention to the form of legal recognition of sign languages, including the formula of constitutionalisation of the Polish sign language. Sign languages are natural and national languages. Their legal recognition proceeds at the international level and the national one. The regulation at the national level takes the form of a statute, although some countries undertake the constitutionalisation of these languages. A possible regulation of the Polish sign language in the Constitution should adopt a subjective formula, which would properly safeguard legal interests of deaf people.

We present here the first visual interface for a Mexican Spanish Sign Language translator on its first development stage: sign-writing recognition. The software was developed for the unique characteristics of Mexican linguistics and was designed in order to use sentences or a sequence of signs in sign-writing system which are decoded by the program and converted into a series of images with movement that correspond to the Mexican sign language system. Using a lexical, syntactic and semantic algorithms plus free software such as APIss from Java, video converter software, data base manager like MySQL, Postgres and SQlite, was possible to read and interpret the rich and complex Mexican language. Our application for visual interface showed to be capable of reading and reconstruct each sentence used for the interpreter and translate it into a high definition video. The average time of video display vs number of sentences to interpret, probed to be in linear relation with an average time of two seconds per sentence. The software has overcome the problem of homonym words frequently used in Spanish language and verb tense relation for each sentence, special symbols such as #, %, $, etc. are still not recognized into the software.

Opis:
Democratization of social life in Poland after political transformation of 1989 meant that people with disabilities, including the deaf began to participate in social life actively and demand the ability to use full rights of citizenship. Active presence in the public space requires a constant, uninterrupted communication. In order to improve communication it is necessary to teach the hearing ways to communicate they use to encourage the deaf and the hearing to acquire these skills. First of all, the so-called linguistic-sign system (SJM), which uses visual-spatial channel to communicate, is used for communication. Polish Sign Language (PJM) became an innovation in search for better communication between the hearing and the deaf since the first years of the 21st century. Dissemination of the Polish Sign Language (PJM) and teaching this language to the hearing gives more opportunities to communicate the deaf with the hearing. Skills of using Polish sign language are essential in everyday public life interactions in institutions of public administration and health services or places of culture.

Opis:
Musicality is central to musical processes and music research. Yet, there is no consensus of what is understood by the term. It can be assumed that in large populations musicality is distributed according to a bell curve - just as any trait of personality. It is also clear that musical skills can be improved, regardless of a possible stigma of unmusicality. Depending on the conception of musicality, musicality research confronts issues and trade-offs relating to ecological validity of the concept (how musicality connects to actual music), methodology (which methods of study yield valid and reliable results), epistemology (how the gain knowledge of musicality), and ontology of music (what processes pertain to music, what not, and what is possible shared). These issues are reflected in the primarily psychological theories and tests of musicality. This article makes an attempt at a Peircean analysis of musicality. It has been suggested that the traditional psychometric approach to musicality is followed by a semiotic approach, and assuming musicality has to do with how subjects make sense in musical processes, the semiotic analysis of musicality is critical. This analysis applies Peirce’s notion of thought-sign and his tenfold classification of the sign (suggesting a three-dimensional exemplification of Peirce’s trichotomous, three dimensional model). The ten classes are differentiated by six transitions, that seem to have their correlates in the psychological understanding of cognition: manifestation, definition, filtering, binding, associating and understanding of the sign. The six transitions appear useful in analyzing the concept of musicality. Correspondingly, the conditions for musical signification extend from ability of auditory sensation to those of dynamical memory, auditory filtering, auditory structuring, association sound objects and ability to understand and manage communicational situations in music. In order to understand musicality, all these aspects should be studied with good ecological and methodological validity in mind.

A signed graph (or sigraph for short) is an ordered pair S = (Su,σ), where Su is a graph, G = (V,E), called the underlying graph of S and σ : E → {+,−} is a function from the edge set E of Su into the set {+,−}. For a sigraph S its •-line sigraph, L(S) is the sigraph in which the edges of S are represented as vertices, two of these vertices are defined adjacent whenever the corresponding edges in S have a vertex in common, any such L-edge ee′ has the sign given by the product of the signs of the edges incident with the vertex in e ∩ e′. In this paper we establish a structural characterization of •-line sigraphs, extending a well known characterization of line graphs due to Harary. Further we study several standard properties of •-line sigraphs, such as the balanced •-line sigraphs, sign-compatible •-line sigraphs and C-sign-compatible •-line sigraphs.

Opis:
This is the fi rst in a planned series of papers dedicated to Polish Sign Language (PJM) signs denoting speech. It presents an analysis of twenty different signs attested in the Polish Sign Language Corpus (KPJM) in terms of iconicity as well as metonymies and metaphors used in their formation. The conducted analysis showed that two classes of signs can be distinguished in the examined material: iconic signs making use of metonymy and signs motivated by a conceptual metaphor. The former refer exclusively to the production of speech as opposed to signing: the vehicle is the phonetic act (mouth movement or air movement). Metaphoric signs, in turn, consistently rely on the conduit metaphor, refer to both spoken and signed utterances, and focus on transmission of a semantic content.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the major differences and similarities between the Corpus of Polish Sign Language (KPJM), which has been developed for a decade by the team of the Section for Sign Linguistics, Faculty of Polish Studies, University of Warsaw, and corpora of phonic languages (and in particular the National Corpus of Polish (NKJP)). The KPJM is a general corpus with an ambition to represent the whole language, used by the Polish Deaf. Unlike the corpora of phonic languages, which are collections of existing texts, the material of the KPJM was generated purposefully by recording and annotating an extensive set of videos. The paper shows that the sign language corpus should be viewed as analogous to spoken language corpora rather than to written language corpora. The KPJM can be perceived as a model of Polish Sign Language.

A variety of algorithms allows gesture recognition in video sequences. Alleviating the need for interpreters is of interest to hearing impaired people, since it allows a great degree of self-sufficiency in communicating their intent to the non-sign language speakers without the need for interpreters. State-of-the-art in currently used algorithms in this domain is capable of either real-time recognition of sign language in low resolution videos or non-real-time recognition in high-resolution videos. This paper proposes a novel approach to real-time recognition of fingerspelling alphabet letters of American Sign Language (ASL) in ultra-high-resolution (UHD) video sequences. The proposed approach is based on adaptive Laplacian of Gaussian (LoG) filtering with local extrema detection using Features from Accelerated Segment Test (FAST) algorithm classified by a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The recognition rate of our algorithm was verified on real-life data.

Opis:
The culture of signs is a recurrent term in philosophy. It does not allow mindless programs to win. Thanks to it, it is possible to put trust in model, holistic approaches rather than the linguistic determination of meanings. The process of departing from philosophical reflection, which has always been holistic, expressed with the diagram: ideas – notions – definitions, is here reversed. Presentations allow the return to ideas; ideas have more of the imaginary than the symbolic. The concept of the Body without Organs depicts a new form of sensualisation directed not at gaining permanent representations but at the possibilities of switching various functions of experience.
