Opis:
The article is devoted to Boles"aw Prus’s nowel Jacob’s Dream (1875) – to the way it is received in a context different from the original one. Published for a second time in Evening stories (1895) it is a debate the author of The Doll holds with the positivist program of assimilation of the Jews. At the same time the author indicates the new possibilities Zionism gives. Prus tries to see the threats the Jewish nation will face when it will build its state. In many points Prus’s views remind of Theodor Herzl’s opinions. The article is also an attempt at showing the evolution of Boles"aw Prus’s attitude towards the so-called Jewish issue in the 19th century, which is to a large degree typical of his generation.

The paper analyses the short story collection titled Remnants written by the notable Danish author, Helle Helle. This work is characteristic of the contemporary minimalist movement, and is one of the most significant works of the 1990’s in Danish literature. The main point of the paper is the notion of absence and loss, which is treated as the work’s dominating principle. The paper attempts to prove that this governing principle of “absence and loss” both applies to the collection’s plot and its composition. Accordingly, several examples from the text are included to demonstrate the principle’s relevance.

Director/writer/actor Roman Polanski is one of the central figures in the history of Film School in Łódź. This study provides a detailed and comprehensive introduction to examine cinematic and artistic values of his early short films made between 1955 and 1961 in Poland and in France before his professional feature length debut “Knife in the Water” (1962). In his essential work Marek Hendrykowski looks at these nine shorts with in-depth analysis and adopts both historical and theoretical approach, making use of poetics terms, close reading method and socio-cultural interpretation. In its treatment of Polanski’s études this unique study discusses why these films are important in so many aspects and attracitve from many points of view and they have come to symbolise and represent modern cinema in Poland of the 1950s and early 1960s.

Considered one of the most interesting Quebec writers, Aude released a collection of short stories entitled Cet imperceptible mouvement in 1997. What comes to the fore in that collection is the austerity of style intertwined with a unique emotional load, a combination which has raised critics’ eyebrows even if it is typical of Aude’s prose. One of the pivots of her stories is the notion of loss, looked at from various angles. The protagonists typically lose their dearest ones, be it because the latter leave, die or because they drown in mourning. Maimed with the loss, the protagonist reassesses his/her life, faces new challenges, makes constant choices. Excelling in the short story structure, Aude records the depth of loneliness and raises existential queries by means of what might at first sight seem simple gestures, common objects and insignificant situations.

Opis:
The article derives from the intertextual approach to the notion of literary identity, introduced to the modern literary theory in the 1960’s by Julia Kristeva (born 1941). The main idea behind this approach is that no literary text should be perceived as an isolated unity, but always in relation to other texts, which it refers to. The author applies the intertextual perspective to examine the signs of external literary influences in Lise Andersens minimalist prose collection ”En særlig sommer og andre billeder”, published in 2008. The analysis aims to highlight influences from the American short story genre, which appears as an important source of inspiration not only for Andersen herself, but in fact for most of the Danish writers of minimalist fiction. The analysis provides examples of, how inspiration from the American short story manifests itself in form, narration and structure of the selected stories in the collection. Last but not least, the author draws attention to the general importance of American influences in Danish contemporary short fiction and their role for the critical perception of this literary genre both in Denmark and abroad.

The article is devoted to describing the problem of cultural contexts of genre transformations, taking the example of chosen literary forms: short story and romance. A few aspects of text model have been analyzed: structural, stylistic and functional. There are three basic cultural contexts of genre changes: 1. archaecultural, 2. macrocultural, 3. microcultural. Each of them is connected with various factors and aspects of the genres. The analysis allows treating the two chosen genres as “drifting” ones, because they are very “fluent”, they migrate from a discourse to a discourse during their historyfrom the Old-Polish period to contemporary times.

Opis:
The literature of the Romantics, in the first part of the 19th century, is steeped in religious doubt. Moreover, the sacred was a taboo yet unavoidable subject especially in novels and short stories that were considered at the time profane genres. Romantic writers exploited certain covert strategies in order to speak of the unspeak-able and touch the untouchable. They resort, for instance, to their artistic culture with its centuries of pictorial tradition that render religious figures and events more familiar and accessible. Musset’s Le Tableau d’église, Vigny’s Daphné, and Gauthier’s La Toison d’or, all bear witness to a striking (meeting) harmony between iconoclastic and/or cavalier characters and sacred works of art that focus on the Passion. All three writers interweave aesthetic contemplation with mystical communion, thus revealing a new sense of the sacred that is often ambiguous, nay, subversive. And since sacred art is not in itself sacred, it allows writers to come very close to sacrilege in order to examine the fine line between the profane and the sacred.

Modern Emirati Literature written by Woman WritersThe development of prose in the United Arab Emirates occurred much later than in other Gulf Countries. The local press started to develop only at the end of the 1960s. ‘Abd Allah Saqr Ahmad was the author of a short story Qulub la tarham (Merciless Hearts) published at the end of the 1960s and the first collection of short stories in the history of Emirate literature entitled al-Khashaba (A Piece of Wood). The first literary attempts of the young generation of Emirate writers were published within the pages of the following periodicals: an-Nasr, az-Zamalik, ash- Shabab, al-Ahli. On the market appeared the journal al-Ittihad, the weekly Akhbar Dubayy and the monthly al-Majma’. The first stage of modern Emirate literature is constituted by a group of writers who started to publish their works in the years 1972–1975. Among them: ‘Ali ‘Ubayd ‘Ali, Muhammad ‘Ali al-Mirri, ‘Abd al-Aziz Khalil as well as ‘Abd al-Hamid Ahmad and Muhammad al-Murr. In the Emirates women publish their works alongside men. The most renowned names include: Shaikha Mubarak an-Nakhi, Salma Matar Yusuf, Layla Ahmad, Maryam Jam‘a Faraj or Amina ‘Abd Allah Bu Shihab. New generation is represented by: Basima Muhammad Yunis, Su‘ad al-‘Arimi, Asma’ az-Zar‘uni, Ibtisam al-Mu‘alla and Rawda al-Balushi. Their short stories concern social matters i.e. the marriage of underage girls, the lack of respect for the opinions and aspirations of the young. What is more, in those stories we notice attempts at new topics connected with the introduction of a new life style which in turn is related to the economic and financial changes caused by the discovery of crude oil.

Opis:
The author discusses the relationships between Maria Konopnicka’s and Zofia Nałkowska’s works, the two writers who are usually contrasted. The main body of the article is a comparison between Konopnicka’s prison reports, written for the press in the 1880s, and the 1931 short-story collection by Nałkowska, Ściany świata [The Walls of the World]. For Nałkowska, the author of Za kratą [Behind the Bars], the documen tary form of a press report was an opening point, and her experiments with prose were crowned twenty years later with the intimate, modernist short-story collection called Na normandzkim brzegu [On the Shores of Normandy]. Nałkowska goes in the opposite direction: she gradually turns away not only the from the egocentrism of her modernist novels, but also from the over-structured language and style of her Young Poland phase. She was going in the direction of the pure, precise narrative of Medaliony [The Medallions], for which Ściany świata are a kind of prefiguration. The author of the article proposes to conclude that both writers met halfway. The convergences between short-story writing by Konopnicka and some works by Nałkowska (Charaktery, Dom nad łąkami) have been underscored by the comparison with Katherine Mansfield, a comparison which seems obvious for both Polish writers. Both Konopnicka and Nałkowska could be described as “the Polish Katherine Mansfield”, and the similarity is the best indication of the relationship between the two writers.

Opis:
Przedmiotem badań niniejszego studium są opowiadania Ralfa Rothmanna zebrane w zbiorze noszącym tytuł Rehe am Meer (Sarny nad morzem). Rothmann należy do współczesnych pisarzy niemieckich; w 2006 r. otrzymał nagrodę literacką Maxa Frischa.
The subject of the present study are short stories by Ralf Rothmann from the collection entitled Rehe am Meer (Roe Deer at the Seaside). Rothmann is a contemporary German writer and the winner of the 2006 Max Frisch Literary Award. His short stories depict everyday occurrences and the fates of ordinary people: labourers at a construction site, a single mother, holiday makers, a man mourning the death of his girlfriend or an abandoned child missing its mother. The presentation of these situations is high on realism and precision. The study aims to demonstrate that what all these protagonists share is alienation, manifested on a variety of planes. Rarely do their lives show invigorating bonds. Alienation denotes internal or external removal from what used to be intimate, a painful distance, a loss of bond with another human being and the environment.

The literary work of A.G. Matoš is characterized by a strong interest in femininity and sexuality. The analyses of female’s figures and sexuality in the author’s oeuvre have strived to imbue these concepts with stable meaning. Our thesis is that sexuality and the rhetoric of femininity are generally unreadable and ambiguous, and that their direct, literal interpretations are based on their unconscious exclusion. The example of the short story Cvijet sa raskršća (Crossroads Flower) shows that the rhetoric of femininity works as a drive of the text and its reading, and that the interpretations, trying to calm the ambiguity of that concept, remain blind to the blindness of insight, for what the text sets as a necessary condition of its own reading and understanding.
