Opis:
A propeller shaft generally experiences three linear forces and three moments, the most important of which are thrust, torque, and lateral forces (horizontal and vertical). Thus, we consider 4DOFs (degrees of freedom) of propeller shaft vibrations. This paper is presented to obtain the vibration equations of the various coupled vibrations of the propeller shaft at the stern of a ship (including coupled torsional-axial, torsional-lateral, axial-lateral, torsional-axial, and lateral vibrations). We focused on the added hydrodynamic forces (added mass and added damping forces) due to the location of the propeller behind the ship. In this regard, the 4DOFs of the coupled vibration (torsional-longitudinal and lateral vibrations in the horizontal and vertical directions) equations of shaft and propeller systems located behind a ship were extracted with and without added mass and damping forces. Also, the effect of mass eccentricity was considered on vibrations occurring at the rear of the ship.

Opis:
During designing the ship its designer tends to achieve as-high-as possible efficiency of ship’s propulsion system. The greatest impact on the efficiency is introduced by ship’s screw propeller whose efficiency depends not only on its geometry but also distribution of wake current velocity. To change wake current distribution and improve propeller efficiency an asymmetric form is usually applied to stern part of ship hull. This paper presents results of numerical analysis of wake current velocity distribution, performed by using a CFD method for a B 573 ship of symmetric stern and the same ship of an asymmetric stern. Next, the mean values of screw propeller efficiency in non-homogenous water velocity field were calculated for both the hull versions of B 573 ship.

An account of research activities on the devices improving the manoeuvring abilities carried out at the Gdansk University of Technology is reviewed. These devices could be placed on the bulbous bow (opening bulbous bow) and at the stern end (wake pressure equalising device, stern shield, opening rudder). Researches with segments of models of these devices in a cavitation tunnel and on self propelled models of ships in a towing tank were performed as well as on open lakes.

Opis:
Propeller-hull interaction coefficients - the wake fraction and the thrust deduction factor - play significant role in design of propulsion system of a ship. In the case of inland waterway vessels the reliable method of predicting these coefficients in early design stage is missing. Based on the outcomes from model tests and from numerical computations the present authors show that it is difficult to determine uniquely the trends in change of wake fraction and thrust deduction factor resulting from the changes of hull form or operating conditions. Nowadays the resistance and propulsion model tests of inland waterway vessels are carried out rarely because of relatively high costs. On the other hand, the degree of development of computational methods enables’ to estimate the reliable values o interaction coefficients. The computations referred to in the present paper were carried out using the authors’ own software HPSDKS and the commercial software Ansys Fluent.

Opis:
An account of research activities on the devices improving the manoeuvring abilities carried out at the Gdansk University of Technology were presented in Part I of the paper. Experience from implementation of open rudders on real ships is presented in Part II. Open rudders were fitted on two full size ships: a 1000 BHP harbour tug and a 2500 BHP long line fishing vessel. Designs were made for four types of ships: motor sailing passenger ship “Gwarek” (2 x 1.032 BHP and 1800 m˛ sail area); arctic expedition sailing ship m/y “Polarex” (length 40,4 m, 1200 BHP); rescue vessel R-27 (two engines a 600 BHP with single propeller); harbour tug m/t “Atlas” (2500 BHP). None of these designs was implemented due to financial difficulties of the owners. Further model experiments with a self propelled model of a cargo liner m/s “Hollandia” exceeding 20 knots were carried out on the lake as well as with a model of a twin screw vessel.
