Opis:
Vessels moored at port terminals may be subject to excessive strain on mooring lines, induced by other ships passing in their vicinity. This phenomenon is called hydrodynamic interaction, and well known in the international literature as Passing Ship. It occurs due to the displacement of the mass of water between the two vessels, which, consequently, induces hydrodynamic stresses on the two ships. Within this context, scale models are a powerful tool for hydrodynamics studies, being able of reproduce the complex water flow phenomena that take place around passing and moored ship. This paper presents a scale model technique to study the Passing Ship phenomenon and its application on a case study developed for the Santos Port. The study was based on the analysis of the results of simulations performed on a 1:170 scale model to compare the effect of various navigations conditions on the mooring lines of a docked ship.

Opis:
Physical scale models have a large range of application in studies of hydraulic works. In port engineering, they can be used to optimize the general layout of terminals, evaluation of protection structures, simulation of vessel maneuvers and investigation of mooring plans for vessels, among several subjects. Once physical modeling allows a high accuracy in the waves and currents representation as well as their interaction with the bottom and the vessels, the studies of mooring systems in coastal and estuarine ports based on physical modeling tests provide greater reliability in comparison with those grounded on distinct types of models. To highlight the importance of this kind of application, this article presents the case study of the Ponta da Madeira Port (PMP), located in the State of Maranhao, Brazil, developed with the support of the 1:170 scale reduced physical model conceived and calibrated for this area. This study analyzed several alternatives to improve the availability of the northern berth of the Pier III of PMP, including new mooring strategies and the construction of a new improvement structure. The results, which concerned on preliminary tests of the mooring lines tensions, evidenced structural intervention could substantially reduce the risk of mooring lines break, indicating that further investigations concerning different layouts for the improvement structure are promising in order to provide an increase of this berth availability.

Opis:
There is a number of ports where approach or inside navigation channels are located close to the quay walls. In difficult hydrometeorological conditions appropriate speed of ship is needed to keep proper ship’s steering while passing through channel. The ships that pass near the quay walls with high speed create high interaction forces on moored ships and negatively interact on their mooring equipment and quay walls. Ports should ensure relevant maintenance and reliability of quay walls and ships’ mooring equipment. That is why investigation of the ships interaction forces during ship passing near the ships moored to quay walls is very important to find limitations of the passing ship speed depending on passing ship’s parameters, distances and environmental conditions to provide reliable maintenance of navigation channel. In the article the conditions of dynamic forces caused by passing ships are investigated, including possible external forces influencing on moored ships, mooring equipment and quay walls. The methodology to assess the forces exerted on ship moored to quay wall by ship passing close to them is created. On the basis of the case study analysis results, the recommendations for the limitations to ships passing near the ships moored to quay walls were proposed that will allow providing relevant maintenance and reliability of navigation channel and its infrastructure.

Opis:
This paper presents a novel step forward in finding the loads of particular mooring ropes that balance the steady environmental excitations for a ship staying at berth. The industrial static equilibrium method for a rough assessment of ship mooring safety is considered to be well-established. The static loads are directly related to the rope’s MBLs (minimum breaking loads) while applying a certain safety margin (usually 50%). The problem is reduced to a set of linear equations that may be solved analytically. The generality in terms of arbitrary horizontal and vertical angles of mooring ropes is preserved. All derivations are provided to enhance trust in the very simple yet absolutely accurate and fast linear solution. The accuracy is studied both analytically, throughout all the development stages, and finally by comparison to the exact numerical solution of the original nonlinear equilibrium equations for an exemplary mooring pattern. A discussion of selected effects in load distribution is also given. Using the approach presented, for instance, we can efficiently test mooring safety when any mooring rope of the set is accidentally broken.

Opis:
The present paper describes a proposal of the method for simulating the motion of freely floating and moored objects in waves, based on the RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes Equations) flow model. Attempts on using this model for simulating the floating body dynamic started quite recently due to its large requirements for the computer power. Only in the past few years such analyses became more common, however, no unique approach can be observed due to large variety of existing possibilities, numerical methods etc. The paper includes the description of the proposed method, which consists in mesh generation technique, efficient wave generation method, and the mooring system module, as well as two samples of marine applications: analyses of the motion of fishing vessel in head waves and the motion of moored semi-submersible drilling platform. The results were verified basing on the towing tank experiments, conducted by Centrum Techniki Okrętowej (Ship Design and Research Centre) S.A. Generating the waves by prescribed wave motion on both ends of the domain, generating the waves by prescribed wave motion and suppressing them in the damping zone, sliding mesh example, mooring system scheme, forcedisplacement characteristics of the mooring chain, fishing vessel in head waves, heave motion history, outline of the semi-submersible are presented.

Opis:
For many reasons, ship model interaction tests are performed in experimental towing tanks. This paper presents research on the hydrodynamic forces acting on a ship tied up at the solid berth, which is produced by other ships passing by using free-running ship models with much larger dimensions than those used in towing tanks. A passing ship model was controlled by a human operator – an experienced master. This enabled a study of the influence of the interaction impact on the course of the maneuver. The research was carried out at the Ship Handling Research and Training Centre in Iława. The ship model was moored alongside and equipped with multi-directional force sensors linking the ship model with a solid berth. Forces were measured as a function of the passing ship speed, side distance between both ships, ship sizes, and depth-to-draft ratio (H/T). Forces were measured in two planes: the longitudinal (surge) and the transversal (sway). A numerical database was processed and ordered according to the variables. The fuzzy model was created within a “Matlab” computing environment using a Sugeno-type self-learning neuron network model. The proposed Sugeno model was evaluated with other methods presented by Flory (2002), Seelig (2001), and PASS-MOOR by Wang (1975). The ultimate goal of this study was to simplify the method of predictive calculations for adjusting speed and distance when passing by the moored ship, which ensures compliance with safe port mooring requirements.

Benefits and limitations of onboard mooring ropes application to improve a ship manoeuvrability during berthing are discussed. A mathematical model of mooring rope forces is formulated. This has been incorporated in the general ship manoeuvring model for obtaining the real ship motions while a mooring rope is in operation. The simulation output is presented. It appears that the rotational energy absorption performance is largely governed by the location of ship's instant pivot point in relation to the mooring fix point.
Przeanalizowano możliwość zastosowania statkowych lin cumowniczych do poprawy sterowności jednostki podczas manewrów cumowania. Sformułowano praktyczny algorytm pozyskiwania oddziaływań lin cumowniczych dla potrzeb symulacji manewrowania. Przedstawiono wyniki symulacji dotyczące redukcji prędkości kątowej wskutek naprężenia liny zamocowanej na dziobie - efektywność takiej operacji zależy w dużym stopniu od wzajemnego położenia chwilowego środka obrotu względem miejsca zamocowania cumy.

The maritime industry has begun to look into autonomous ships as an alternative to conventional ships due to growing pressure to reduce the environmental impact of maritime transportation, to increase safety, to mitigate the growing challenges in recruiting seafarers, and to increase profit margins. There is a lot of research on the challenges and feasibilities of an autonomous ship. However, there is less discussion on the transition from manned to unmanned ships and the tasks that are feasible to automate before the whole ship is unmanned. This paper investigates the technical and regulatory feasibility of automating different tasks for different operational phases for a large cargo ship. This study shows that a fully unmanned cargo ship is not feasible today, but that some tasks can be automated within the next five years.

Opis:
Ever growing energy industry requires larger quantities of LNG to be transported by bigger ships between terminals. Every day, new kind of large vessels created by new technologies, and these are used to trade around the globe. This is the dynamic change in shipping industry. But on the other hand these new vessels need to safely berth to existing terminals which we may accept as more static part of the trade. Thus this study born by the request of Ege Gaz Aliaga LNG Terminal management to determine if it is safe to berth to the terminal by a new breed of large LNG carrier type named as Q-Flex and Q-Max. Transas Bridge Simulator NTPRO 5000 series was used in this study for extensive experiments which had been simulated by the use of hook function. During the study, every force applied to mooring hooks and dolphins by the ship lines were divided into 3 dimensions and then measured by simulation experiments. With analysis of the data, required hook and dolphins strengths were determined for the safe mooring arrangements. Upon the completion of the study Ege Gaz Aliaga LNG Terminal became the first safe berth for Q-Flex type vessels in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. And finally all experiments were confirmed with real life experience when the first Q-Flex type LNG carrier berthed to the Ege Gaz Aliaga LNG Terminal.
