Opis:
Global maritime transport is one of the causes of air pollution. Annex VI of the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) refers to air pollution. Air pollution is mainly caused by the conversion of energy in internal combustion engines, in particular in the case of transient engine operation. The main pollutant is soot. It is an impure carbon substance of various sizes, resulting from incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons. This document concerns data-based modelling of soot emissions – the main component of exhaust particles – in transient engine operation. In a unique manoeuvring aid system, the prediction of exhaust emissions will become a new element. If the navigator knows the consequences of his actions, the human role will be strengthened in relation to the decision making on energy-efficient and emission-poor vessel traffic, in particular during manoeuvres. Thanks to the mathematical model, the soot formation process during stationary engine operation – at constant speed and load – will be mapped first. The model will then be extended to simulate engine operation and soot formation in the transition phase.
Jeżeli nawigator zna konsekwencje swoich działań, to rola człowieka zostanie wzmocniona w odniesieniu do podejmowania decyzji o energooszczędnym i ubogim w emisje spalin ruchu statków, w szczególności podczas manewrów. Dzięki modelowi matematycznemu,w pierwszej kolejności zostanie odwzorowany proces powstawania sadzy podczas stacjonarnej pracy silnika – przy stałych obrotach i obciążeniu. Następnie model ten zostanie tak rozszerzony, aby umożliwić symulację pracy silnika i powstawania sadzy w fazie przejściowej.

Opis:
The development of marine diesel engines has so far been directed towards increasing their power, reducing fuel consumption, burning fuels of the lowest possible quality and the extension of operation time. The rising pro-ecological pressure has made atmosphere pollution by exhaust gases of marine engines one of the main problems of environmental protection of recent years. The Gdansk Bay area, just like sea ports or coastal regions, is vulnerable to the effect of noxious compounds contained in vessel exhaust gases, besides those coming from industrial plants, power plants or vehicles. This concerns vessels both in ports and in the roads. In order to determine the share of vessels in environmental pollution and to counteract the harmful effects of toxic compounds in marine engine exhaust gases, it is necessary to know the emission values of these compounds from particular vessels, which is possible with the knowledge of their movement parameters, concentration values of particular compounds for these parameters and the atmospheric conditions. The report presents problems of modelling the NOx emission in exhaust gases from main marine Diesel engines, such as problems with construction special models describing the marine vessels movement or define real value of toxic compounds emission.

This paper presents methods and results of the 1st series of tests of acoustic emission (AE) signals, aimed at assessing degree of corrosion protection of a tank made of hull structural steel, protected by means of a protective coating combined from polyurethane layer and concrete filler. The tests were carried out in compliance with a method specially elaborated for application to the work in question. In the method were used requirements of the standards in force, as well as experience gained during realization of the research project CORRSHIP, included in 5th Frame Program of European Union. The application of the AE method to detect and localize corrosion sources during exposure of specimens to corrosive mixture confirmed its high usefulness for the carried-out tests on corrosion protection effectiveness of new types of protective coatings.

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO), in particular, dedicated to the prevention to marine pollution by ships, adopted in 2007 the provisions implementing the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI). The EEDI was implemented as an amendment to the MARPOL Annex VI. The index specifies the technical standards and norms imposed on shipyards, which shall be intended to improve the energy efficiency of certain categories of new ships and vessels, consequently leading to the reduction of CO2 emission by around 25-35 percent till 2030. The paper presents the operational factors affecting fuel consumption and energy efficiency indexes of a ship, the algorithm of verification and certification of the EDDI along with exemplary calculations for a container ship.

Regulations concerning the limitation of harmful compounds emission contained in exhaust gases become more restrictive. This is observed within regulations regarding land-based installations and also rules applied to ships of global trade fleet. Other restrictions of vessels emissions, enclosed in rules set out in Annex IV of Marpol Convention 73/78 are gradually implemented and establish emission limits for ship engines. The boiler delivers the heat energy required for fuel preparation for main and auxiliary engines - and also by consuming fuel in its combustion chamber becomes and emitter. This article describes the anticipated methodology of the boiler steam efficiency, depending on the main engine installed. Additionally, fuel oil consumption analysis in various steam capacity range performed using the histograms. The histograms were produced on the basis of service reports of similar units, and combining fuel oil consumption with exhaust emission during operation. A vessel engine report includes monthly machinery abstract and is compiled for a ship-owner on the basis of the log book records. Quantified exhaust emission from auxiliary oil fired boiler contributes determination the overall emissions from a ship.

During their stay in harbours the ships generate the electric energy and heat for their needs most frequently by use of their own power and boiler plants through Diesel generating sets and oil fired boiler. The operation of this machinery causes the toxic compound emission to the atmosphere. In this article the possibilities are presented of limiting this emission through such activities as supplying the ship with the energy from the shore power network, from barge-situated power plant provided with the Diesel generating sets supplied with LNG, and in case of the boiler plant through the application of the liquid or solid biofuel. There are also presented some selected results of the simplified comparative analysis of the emission levels with the various methods of generating the electric energy and heat during ship’s stay in harbour.

Pollution emission tests from turbine engines used for the main propulsion of vessels require measurement of the concentration of harmful compounds in the exhaust and assessment of the exhaust gases mass generated by the engine. The concentration of harmful compounds can be determined in a direct way by measuring it in the stream of exhaust gases. However, due to the large output of exhaust gases, the mass of exhaust gases must be determined indirectly. To do this it is necessary to carry out a series of tests and analyzes that will enable parameterization of operating conditions. The obtained parameters and functional relations between them can be used to assess the mass of generated exhaust gases. The article presents analyzes related to the methodology for assessing the mass of exhaust gases generated by the main propulsion turbine engine of the vessel, and the manner of their use in the assessment of emission of harmful exhaust gases.

Opis:
The development and growing availability of modern technologies, along with more and more severe environment protection standards which frequently take a form of legal regulations, are the reason why attempts are made to find a quiet and economical propulsion system not only for newly built watercraft units, but also for modernised ones. Correct selection of the propulsion and supply system for a given vessel affects significantly not only the energy efficiency of the propulsions system but also the environment – as this selection is crucial for the noise and exhaust emission levels. The paper presents results of experimental examination of ship power demand performed on a historic passenger ship of 25 m in length. Two variants, referred to as serial and parallel hybrid propulsion systems, were examined with respect to the maximum length of the single-day route covered by the ship. The recorded power demands and environmental impact were compared with those characteristic for the already installed conventional propulsion system. Taking into account a high safety level expected to be ensured on a passenger ship, the serial hybrid system was based on two electric motors working in parallel and supplied from two separate sets of batteries. This solution ensures higher reliability, along with relatively high energy efficiency. The results of the performed examination have revealed that the serial propulsion system is the least harmful to the environment, but its investment cost is the highest. In this context, the optimum solution for the ship owner seems to be a parallel hybrid system of diesel-electric type.

The issue taken in the article concerns vessels using gas turbine engines as part of propulsion systems and is an addition to previously conducted research in the field of vessels impact on the environment. The author's purpose was to determine the impact on the natural environment of the frigate's operation, in the aspect of ecological indicators. As part of research, measurements of harmful compounds concentration in the engine exhaust during frigate's cruise with simultaneous registration of engine operation parameters were carried out. The obtained results from the conducted measurements were the subject of a comparative analysis with the engine load values. The comparison of the obtained data made it possible to assign concentration values of particular harmful exhaust compounds to the appropriate engine load conditions during the cruise. On the basis of the analyzes carried out, emission factors for harmful exhaust emissions were determined. These factors allow determining the mass of harmful compounds emitted to the atmosphere from marine gas turbine engines during the operation of the Oliver Hazard Perry frigate.

Opis:
The ship "Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI)" has been formulated by the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) as a measure of the CO2 emission performance of ships. The ship EEDI is calculated based on characteristics of the ship at build, incorporating parameters including ship capacity, engine power and fuel consumption. Shipping is responsible for CO2 discharge of approximately 3.3% global emission and despite being an energy-efficient transport means, compared with other transport modes, there are opportunities for increasing energy efficiency. The EEDI requires a minimum energy efficiency level (CO2 emissions) per capacity mile (e.g. tonne mile) for different ship type and size sectors. With the level being tightened over time, the EEDI will stimulate continued technical development of all the components influencing the energy efficiency of a ship. The paper presents an overview of EEDI calculation method for container vessels and results of experimental approach. The experimental process results through comprehensive analysis of operational data, from modern container vessel, equipped with direct main propulsion unit have been introduced. Ship operators have already been implementing energy efficiency operational measures and set goals for reducing the energy consumption of their fleet. Performance and savings are not always monitored and reported. However, it can be foreseen that such activity when is successfully promoted, reduction of CO2 emissions can be achieved.

Least fuel route programming was presented, together with a description of safety rules during the change-over procedure in operations concerning the main engine and other ship systems. An attempt to identify the problems that may be encountered when programming the routes with the use of on-board routing systems, like Bon Voyage of AWT, leading through the ECA zones, has been made. Examples of such problems, taken from a true voyage of a postpanamx container vessel on a transpacific voyage, have been presented. A generalized algorithm for programming the route leading through the ECA zone according to the least fuel criterion has been presented.

The paper has been presented the methods of nitrogen oxides emission reduction to fulfill the Tier 2 and Tier 3 requirements of the Annex VI of MARPOL Convention. It has been shown the development of marine two-stroke diesel engines and the change of nitrogen oxides emission from 1960 to 2000 and later up to 2020 after the implementation of NOx emission reduction methods. Specific fuel consumption before 2000, and as a prediction and given data in the manufacturers manuals for Tier 3 engines up to 2020, and as only a prediction up to 2030 has been analyzed and elaborated. Impact of nitrogen oxides reduction methods on the specific fuel consumption of the marine diesel engine has been evaluated. Additional emission of some gases to the atmosphere due to the implementation of reduction methods has been determined. EGR and SCR systems have got a lot of imperfections: required to install additional reduction systems (investment cost, required volume in the engine room), need maintenance and operation costs, produced wastes during treatment process. The estimated additional cost is about 0.8 USD/MWh of produced energy, taking into account only the cost of excessive used fuel. The whole increased cost may reach the level two-three times more due to cleaning systems investment costs, their operational cost and waste disposal. It has been the one of the reasons of worsening the transport effectiveness and competitiveness.
