The paper demonstrates the applicability of X-ray microtomography (μCT) to analysis of the results of shear strength examinations of clayey soils. The method of X-ray three-dimensional imaging offers new possibilities in soil testing. The work focuses on a non-destructive method of evaluation of specimen quality used in shear tests and mechanical behavior of soil. The paper presents the results of examination of 4 selected clayey soils. Specimens prepared for the triaxial test have been scanned using μCT before and after the triaxial compression tests. The shear strength parameters of the soils have been estimated. Changes in soil structure caused by compression and shear failure have been presented as visualizations of the samples tested. This allowed for improved interpretation and evaluation of soil strength parameters and recognition of pre-existing fissures and the exact mode of failure. Basic geometrical parameters have been determined for selected cross-sections of specimens after failure. The test results indicate the utility of the method applied in soil testing.

The study presents experimental studies on a regular cross-ply laminate of a [(0/90) F]4S configuration. Each layer is made of VE 11-M vinylester resin (the manufacturer: "Organika-Sarzyna" Chemical Plants) reinforced with aplain carbon fabric (the manufacturer: C. Cramer GmbH & Co. KG Division E CC). The carbon fabric has the following parameters: Styles 430, filament Carbon 6K, substance 300 g/m , warp and weft 400/400 tex, 3.7/3.7 band/cm. Laminate was produced by ROMA private enterprise using the vacuum molding technology and technological parameters developed by ROMA taking into account the VE l J-M material specification. A program of the experimental studies was aimed on statistical analysis of measurement results of the in-plane shear modulus and the in-plane shear strength of the laminate. In investigations, the in-plane shear test was carried out in accordance to the PN-EN ISO 14129:1997 standard [1], but applying the modified procedure that takes into consideration the results of the previous research on the influence of a traverse velocity and of a number of stress cycles on static measurements of the in-plane shear modulus [2]. The mean value, the standard deviation and the two-sided 95 percent confidence interval for the mean value for the investigated quantities have been determined. Practical usefulness ofthe manufacture technology of the laminate was assessed.

This article presents the results of the application of Digital Image Correlation (DIC) to measurements of in-plane shear modulus and strength of three different carbon fiber reinforced laminates. Three different approaches to shear strain calculations via DIC are evaluated and compared with standard strain gage measurements. Calculation of shear strain based on averaging DIC strain values of strain gages area in most cases yielded results closest to strain gages, while measurements based on single point strain measuring differed the most from strain gages. These results are attributed to shear strain distribution in the center area of the specimen. Thermoplastic matrix fabric reinforced composite had the lowest shear strength at 5% of shear strain, but the highest ultimate shear strength and strain at failure. Of thermosetting materials, laminate reinforced with unidirectional carbon fiber had shear modulus about 10% lower, than fabric reinforced laminate, but higher ultimate strength and strain at failure. This behavior is attributed to the presence of weaves in fabric reinforcing the laminate, causing shear stiffening of the material, but lowering its ability to deform under shear loading.

The PN-EN ISO 14129:1997 standard [1] and closely related standards [2-9] were taken into consideration in experimental studies on the static in-plane shear response by a tensile test of a [(plus or minus 45)F]nS laminate. A program of the experiments was focused on testing a rate of a testing machine crosshead and a number of static stress cycles. An influence of these factors on the in-plane shear modulus was investigated. Based on the conducted investigations, the modified experimental procedure has been proposed for determination of the correct value of the in-plane shear modulus and the in-plane shear strength.

A systematic approach to measure the differences between Mohr-Coulomb (MC) and Drucker-Prager (DP) shear strength criteria used commonly in soil and rock mechanics is presented. It is shown that the DP criterion generates a shear strength between 0.6 and 3 times the MC strength, for the same friction angle and cohesion parameters. The appropriate conditions for obtaining equal shear strengths are given. Moreover, some new DP failure surfaces are proposed which minimize the differences relative to the MC predictions. The equivalence of the DP and MC criteria under plane strain conditions is also examined.

The paper focuses on the numerical analysis of the effect of texturial anisotropy on shear localization in cohesionless granular materials. For simulation of the mechanical behaviour of a granular material during a monotonous deformation path, a hypoplastic constitutive model was used. To take into account a characteristic length of micro-structure, the constitutive model was extended by micro-polar terms. To take into account texturial effects, the granular hardness was modified. The calculations were carried out with a sand specimen during plane strain compression under constant lateral pressure. A stochastic and uniform distribution of the initial void ratio in the granular specimen was assumed. In addition, shear localization for two different uniform initial void ratios was investigated.

The shear strength of anisotropic materials is carried out on the special samples and on the appropriate instrumentation. Research conducted to obtain a homogenous state of the shear stress in the plane sample is difficult, and involve numerous occurrence of additional stress. Therefore, it is difficult to determine the shear strength. The wood composites are classified as orthotropic materials. In addition, are composed of the layers early wood and latewood. The layers have different thicknesses and exhibit different strength properties. The principal method for determining the shear stress is the trial of twisting of thin-walled tubes. Production of the pipe samples from the wood to determine the shear stress is impossible, due to annual rings. Beginning of destruction of samples under load was registered by a prototype device. This device makes the realization of plane state of stress in the sample possible. The position of the axis of the sample relative to the direction of the load can be varied. Such configuration axle of the sample to the loading direction, allows to perform, also stretching or compression besides to shear. The tests were performed for the natural wood and surface modified wood. The paper presents an original method and device designed to determine the shear strength of anisotropic materials on the example of natural wood and a surface modified wood.

The paper presents a FE-analysis of a spontaneous shear localization inside non-cohesive sand during plane strain compression. The calculations were carried out with a gradient-enhanced hypoplastic constitutive law. The hypoplastic law can reproduce essential features of granular bodies depending on the void ratio, pressure level and deformation direction. To model the thickness of shear zones, a characteristic length of the microstructure was incorporated via the second gradient of the modulus of the deformation rate. To determine the effect of micro-structure, the analysis was performed with different characteristic lengths for the same specimen size.

The magnetoelectroelastic analysis of two bonded dissimilar piezo-electro-magneto-elastic ceramics with a crack perpendicular to and terminating at the interface is made. By using the Fourier integral transform (in perpendicular directions in each materials), the mixed boundary conditions and continuity conditions are transformed to a singular integral equation with generalized Cauchy kernel, the solution of which has been well studied, and classical methods are directly applicable here to obtain the closed form solution. The results are presented for a permeable crack under anti-plane shear loading and in-plane electric and magnetic loadings, as prescribed electric displacement and magnetic inductions or electric and magnetic fields. The results indicate that the magnetoelectroelastic field near the crack tip in the homogeneous PEMO- elastic ceramic is dominated by a traditional inverse square-root singularity, while the coupled field near the crack tip at the interface exhibits the singularity of the power law r--α , r being the distance from the interface crack tip and α depending on the material constants of a bimaterial. In particular, electric and magnetic fields have no singularity at the crack tip in a homogeneous solid, whereas they are singular around the interface crack tip. Numerical results are given graphically to show the effects of the material properties on the singularity order, field intensity factors and energy release rates. The results presented in this paper should have potential applications to the design of multilayered magnetoelectroelastic structures.

The paper presents a FE-analysis of shear localisation in granular bodies by a finite element method based on a hypoplastic constitutive law. The law can reproduce essential features of granular bodies depending on the void ratio, pressure level and deformation direction. To realistically simulate the formation of a spontaneous shear zone inside cohesionless sand during plane strain compression, a hypoplastic constitutive law was extended by non-local terms. The effects of initial void ratio, pressure level and a characteristic length on the thickness of an interior shear zone were shown. The numerical results were compared with corresponding laboratory tests.

Microstructure and texture development in medium-to-high stacking fault energy face centred cubic metals were investigated in order to examine the role of lattice re-orientation on slip propagation across grain boundaries and to characterize the influence of micro- and macro-scale copper-type shear bands on textural changes at large deformations. Polycrystalline pure copper (fine - and coarse - grained) and fine-grained AA1050 alloy were deformed in plane strain compression at room temperature to form two sets of well-defined macroscopic shear bands. The deformation-induced sub-structures and local changes in crystallographic orientations were investigated mostly by scanning electron microscopy equipped with high resolution electron backscattered facility. In all the deformed grains within macro- shear bands a strong tendency to strain-induced re-orientation was observed. The flat, strongly deformed grains exhibited a deflection within narrow areas. The latter increased the layers’ inclination with respect to ED and led to kink-type bands, which are the precursors of MSBs. The mechanism of macro- / micro-shear bands formation is strictly crystallographic since in all the areas of the sheared zone, the crystal lattice rotated such that one of the {111} slip planes became nearly parallel to the shear plane and the <011> direction became parallel to the direction of maximum shear. This strain-induced crystal lattice rotation led to the formation of specific macro- / micro-shear bands components that facilitated slip propagation across the grain boundaries without any visible variation in the slip direction.
W pracy badano zmiany strukturalne i teksturowe w metalach o sieci regularnej ściennie centrowanej związane z lokalną re-orientacją sieci krystalicznej wynikającą z formowania się mikro- i makro- pasm ścinania. Analizowano polikrystaliczne próbki miedzi oraz aluminium o czystości technicznej (stop AA1050) odkształcane w temperaturze otoczenia w próbie nieswobodnego ściskania do zakresu odkształceń, w których następuje wyraźne uformowanie się dwóch rodzin makroskopowych pasm ścinania. W badaniach wykorzystano skaningowy mikroskop elektronowy wyposażony w system automatycznego pomiaru orientacji lokalnych. Zaobserwowano, że w ziarnach umiejscowionych w obszarze makroskopowych pasm ścinania występuje ściśle zdefiniowana tendencja rotacji sieci krystalicznej, w wyniku której jedna z płaszczyzn typu {111} przyjmuje położenie zbliżone do położenia płaszczyzny ścinania, a jeden z kierunków typu <110> (lub <112>) wykazuje tendencję do sytuowania się równolegle do kierunku ścinania. Obserwowana w obszarze wnętrza pasm ścinania rotacja prowadzi do uformowania się specyficznej (mikro)tekstury, która umożliwia propagację poślizgów poprzez granice ziaren bez ‘istotnej’ zmiany kierunku ścinania.

Opis:
A laser-based technique for efficiently generating and detection ultrasonic shear-wave is described. For the detection, a new laser interferometric scheme was recently developed in order to measure the three components of the ultrasonic field. This scheme takes advantage of the large étendue achieved with interferometer based on two-wave mixing in photorefractive crystal. Detection of the out-of-plane component as well as the two orthogonal in-plane components of the surface displacement is achieved using a single laser probe beam and a single, large aperture, collecting optic combined with detector arrays. With this interferometer, all wave types can be detected. The detection of the in-plane component allows efficient detection of shear waves, particularly when the direction of ultrasounds propagation is normal to the surface of inspection. However, for remote shear wave inspection, one must also be able to efficiently generate normal incidence shear waves. With laser-based generation, shear waves are mainly generated off the normal incidence. In this paper, in addition to presenting the tri-component interferometer, an improved method for normal-incidence shear wave generation is described. The combination of shear-wave LU generation with a multi-component laser receiver makes LU pulse-echo shear-wave inspection possible. Results from characterization of the receiver and of the generation are shown.
Opisano technikę laserową do wydajnego generowania i wykrywania ultradźwiękowych fal poprzecznych. W celu detekcji opracowano nowy laserowy układ interferometryczny do pomiaru trzech składników pola ultradźwiękowego. Schemat ten wykorzystuje dużą wartość uzyskaną przy pomocy interferometru opartego na mieszaniu dwóch fal w fotorefrakcyjnym krysztale. Wykrywanie elementu poza płaszczyzną, jak również dwóch ortogonalnych elementów w płaszczyźnie przemieszczenia powierzchni, uzyskuje się za pomocą pojedynczej wiązki sondy laserowej i pojedynczej, dużej apertury, zbierającej układ optyczny połączonej z układami detektorów. Za pomocą tego interferometru można wykryć wszystkie typy fal. Wykrywanie elementu w płaszczyźnie umożliwia skuteczne wykrywanie fal poprzecznych, szczególnie gdy kierunek propagacji ultradźwięków jest normalny do powierzchni kontroli. Jednak w przypadku zdalnej inspekcji fali poprzecznej ważne jest również by móc wydajnie generować padające fale poprzeczne. W przypadku generowania laserowego fale poprzeczne są wzbudzane głównie poza normalną . W niniejszej pracy, oprócz prezentacji interferometru trójskładnikowego, opisano ulepszoną metodę generowania padających fal normalnych. Połączenie generatora LU fali padającej z wieloskładnikowym odbiornikiem laserowym umożliwia inspekcję falą poprzeczną z wykorzystaniem trybu LU pulse-echo. Przedstawiono wyniki charakteryzacji odbiornika i generatora.
