Opis:
In this paper, a three-dimensional micromechanical-based constitutive model is proposed to describe the temperature-dependent performance of a cyclic deformed superelastic NiTi shape memory alloy. The dominant texture of the specimen is prescribed as <111> direction along the longitudinal direction. Apart from martensitic transformation, various mechanisms regarding superelastic degradation are taken into consideration. In order to be extended from the single-crystal scale to the polycrystalline version, the constitutive model is implemented into finite element software. It is verified that the measured cyclic response of a superelastic NiTi is well reproduced by the presented approach. Furthermore, the predicting capability of the proposed model is verified by simulating the mechanical behavior of NiTi tube subjected to cyclic bending.

Opis:
In order to develop a brain spatula made of a shape memory alloy (SMA), this paper discusses the bending characteristics of a new brain spatula precision-cast in a TiNi SMA. The results obtained can be summed up as follows. (1) With respect to an SMA-brain spatula having the same length and width as the existing type made of copper, if the new cast SMA spatula is 1.2 times as great in thickness as the existing copper spatula, or if a conventionally rolled SMA spatula is 1.3 times as great, the SMA instrument will offer the same bending rigidity and withstand almost as great a bending force as the copper one. (2) Expressing the bending fatigue life of the copper or SMA in the region of low-cycle fatigue as a power function of the maximum bending strain, the fatigue life of the SMA is longer than that of the copper. For both the cast and the rolled SMAs, the fatigue life is longer under pulsating-plane bending than under alternating plane bending.
W pracy opisano problem projektowania szpatułki używanej w chirurgii mózgu, wykonanej ze stopu z pamięcią kształtu (SMA). Przedyskutowano charakterystyki zginania nowej szpatułki wykonanej z precyzyjnie odlewanego stopu TiNi.

Opis:
Shape memory alloys are important biomaterials but difficult-to-machine (DTM). Their machining needs to be done using intelligent techniques to obtain a better machinability. Hybrid optimization is one of such techniques which can do modelling and optimization of machining parameters for the best values of machinability indicators. Wire electric discharge machining (WEDM) of shape memory alloy has been found as a prominent alternate to the conventional machining techniques, however it needs the assistance of intelligent techniques to machine such materials to get the optimum values of machinability indicators. In this paper, WEDM of shape memory alloy Ni55.8Ti is reported. WEDM has been done by varying four process parameters i.e. servo voltage SV, pulse-on time Pon, pulse-off time Poff, and wire feed rate WF using Taguchi L16 robust design of experiment technique. A hybrid optimization technique TOPSIS-Fuzzy-PSO has been successfully used to optimize these parameters (SV-50V; Pon-1µs; Poff-17 µs; WF-4 m/min) for the best possible values of material removal rate (MRR)- 0.049 g/min, maximum roughness- 11.45 µm, and recast layer- 22.10 µm simultaneously.

Opis:
In the present study, the corrosion behaviors of amorphous-nanocrystalline Ni50Ti50 shape memory alloy with different crystallite sizes were investigated. The Ni50Ti50 homogenized specimens were hot rolled and annealed at 950°C. Thereafter, the nanocrystalline Ni50Ti50 specimens with different crystalline sizes in the range of 40-350 nm were prepared by cold rolling and annealing at temperature range of 400 to 900°C. The corrosion resistance of Ni50Ti50 specimen with coarse grain size has significantly increased after cold rolling as a result of the formation of amorphous-nanocrystalline structure. The amorphous and nanocrystalline (with the crystallite size of about 40 nm) Ni50Ti50 samples exhibited the best corrosion resistance in the 5% HCl electrolyte with the corrosion potential and corrosion current density of about –197 mV and 2.34×10-6 A/cm2, respectively. This effect can be attributed to the higher density of crystalline defects in amorphous and nanocrystalline structures to quickly form protective films on the surface.

Opis:
Cu-Al-based high temperature shape memory alloys are preferred commonly due to their cheap costs and shape memory properties. In recent years, studies have been conducted on developing and producing a new type of Cu-Al based shape memory alloy. In this study, the CuAl-Cr alloy system, which has never been produced before, is investigated. After production, the SEMEDX measurements were made in order to determine the phases in the Cu84–x Al12Crx+4(x = 0, 4, 6) (weight %) alloy system; and precipitate phases together with martensite phases were detected in the alloys. The confirmations of these phases were made via x-ray measurements. The same phases were observed by XRD diffractogram of the alloys as well. The values of transformation temperature of alloys were determined with Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) at 20°C/min heating rate. According to the DSC results, the transformation temperature of the alloys varies between 320°C and 350°C. This reveals that the alloys show high temperature shape memory characteristics.

Opis:
DSC tests were performed on several types of SMAs to verify the phase-transformation temperatures, and then experiments to examine their characteristics were carried out. An electric-current was supplied to the SMA wire to measure the appropriate operational cur- rent range. The force generated by the SMA wire increased according to the supplied current, but it diminished when the over-current was supplied because thermo-mechanical properties of the wire started to degrade. The appropriate stress range for effective actuation charac- teristics was also investigated. The SMA wire actuator was designed to operate a morphing wing. Experiments for the wing were conducted to verify its characteristics and it was smo- othly deformed.

Advanced subjects in mechanical properties of shape memory alloys and polymers are discussed. In the subloop loading under a stress-controlled condition of the shape memory alloy, the transformation-induced stress relaxation appears due to variation in temperature. The enhancement of corrosion and corrosion fatigue life of the shape memory alloy is discussed. The development of a functionally-graded shape memory alloy and polymer is expected to obtain better performance. Three-way motion appears in the shape memory composite with the shape memory alloy and polymer.

Opis:
The fracture of shape memory alloys is distinct from that of conventional metals, owing to the coexistence and interaction of multiple special features such as martensitic transformation, dislocation-induced plasticity, thermomechanical coupling and others. In this paper, the impact of thermomechanical behavior upon the crack initiation of a NiTi shape memory alloy under Mode I loading is investigated numerically and verified experimentally. A constitutive model incorporating phase transformation, plasticity and thermomechanical coupling is established. Via backward Euler integration and finite-element implementation, the longitudinal strain, martensite volume fraction and temperature field in the vicinity of the crack tip are furnished. The effects of grain size and loading rate on J-integral are revealed. The grain size dependence of crack initiation is non-monotonic. For the samples with grain sizes of 1500 nm, 18 nm and 10 nm, the shielding effect takes place in front of the crack. Additionally, the anti-shielding effect is detected for samples with grain sizes of 80 nm and 42 nm. The parametric study shows that loading rate imposes limited influence on J-integral, which is attributed to a small scale transformation. The decrement of yield stress and the increment of transformation hardening modulus can alleviate the anti-shielding effect and arouse the shielding effect upon crack initiation. The presented results shed light on the design and fabrication of high toughness phase transformable materials.

Opis:
To overcome the disadvantage of decreasing the braking performance of a magnetorheological fluid at high temperatures, a method of combined braking of a shape memory alloy and a magnetorheological fluid is proposed in this paper. The braking torque does not decrease with increasing temperature. Based on the magnetorheological characteristics, the braking torque equation of the magnetorheological fluid is established. Based on the characteristics of the thermal effect, the brake torque equations generated by the shape memory alloy springs are established. This paper provides a basis for the design and manufacture of the shape memory alloy and magnetorheological fluid combined brake system through experiments and theoretical analysis.
