Opis:
The article contains an analysis of the shadow economy at the time of quarantine restrictions and of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine using statistical, analytical and functional methods of scientific research. The aim of the study is to generalize the theoretical and methodological aspects of the shadow economy, to study the current state of shadow economy escalation in the conditions of quarantine restrictions and Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and to systematize possible ways of legalizing the economy. Such a socio-economic process as the shadow economy, represents a number of shifts in the state budget structure, in particular regarding the indicator of tax revenues. In the conditions of crisis, the shadow economy can become both a driving force for balancing the economy and a threat, not only economic, but also a social one. In this article, this issue will be considered in more detail. Therefore, the dynamics of changes in the shadow economy has been considered both according to certain methods of assessing its level to the official GDP volume, and also by various economic sectors during the quarantine restrictions according to the data of the Ministry of the Economy of Ukraine. A diagram of the shadow economy factors was also developed and possible effective changes were pro-posed to overcome them, from which it is clear that the shadow economy needs not only a perfect assessment and specific data for its analysis, but also improvement of the management system, quality of public services and the readiness of people to come out of the “shadow”.

Calculations of the effect of the ship’s shadow on in-water irradiance measurement errors were performed with a Monte Carlo radiance transfer algorithm. The algorithm contained the Cox-Munk wave-slope probability function. A simple 3-D model of the rectangular underwater part of a ship was used. The effect was calculated as a function of sea-water absorption, surface roughness (depending on an assumed wind velocity of up to 15 m s−1) with various wind velocities and directions, length and depth of the ship, distance of instrument from the ship, and bow-to-sun angle.

Opis:
For several years, the expansion of the shadow banking sector in the world can be observed. Shadow banking institutions offer products which partly replace banking transactions and partly complete a banks’ offer. In practice, it is difficult to draw the line separating banks and shadow banking institutions. Shadow banks perform a lot of essential economic and social functions. Both positive and negative aspects of their functioning can be distinguished. Although shadow banking institutions operate like banks, they are not the subject of registration and prudential regulation as banks. The activity of shadow banks is associated with high risk and through linkages with banks they can destabilize the entire financial system of the country in the event of bankruptcy. It has become a prerequisite for the attempts to regulate the activity of shadow banks at the national and international level. In the article, the authors analyze the shadow banking sector in the world and the efforts which have already been taken to regulate the activities of these institutions.

Opis:
Purpose: Occurrence of skin changes, in the form of discolouration on neck and in form of a so-called ”thyroid shadow”, was observed in patients with: Hashimoto’s disease, Graves´ disease, struma nodosa euthyrotica or hyperthyreosis. Effects of selenium status and smoking on the risk of those skin changes were investigated. Materials and methods: The study group consisted of 267 patients with different kinds of thyroid disease. The control group included 34 healthy people. Selenium concentrations in serum were determined by electrothermal absorption spectrometry method. Results: Thyroid shadow was observed in 70 percent of the subject. Selenium levels in serum were lower in patients with thyroid disease (65.051±16.70 µg/L), especially in smokers (62.477±15.21 µg/L) than in the control group (75.162±19.92 µg/L). Conclusions: Thyroid shadow syndrome would be the diagnostic signal of thyroid diseases, especially Hashimoto disease. Selenium status is important in the studied thyroid diseases. Cigarette smoking decreases the concentration of selenium in the serum of patients with thyroid diseases.

The paper is devoted to examining the role of the shadow economy in the context of market equilibrium. The Walras theorem was used in order to highlight the role of the shadow economy in market equilibrium violation. Habitually, a majority of theories as well as models focus just on observed variables and latent factors are omitted. The shadow economy is an unprejudiced typical case in this respect. It exists in any economy and it very often influences market mechanisms significantly. A mathematical model was employed to exhibit dependence between the shadow economy and market equilibrium. Whenever the shadow economy is ignored in modeling market equilibrium, the market is proved to be balanced. The situation changes when the shadow economy is taken into account. Market equilibrium is difficult to be achieved.

Opis:
The main goal of our paper is to determine the existence of a link between government (military) expenditures and the shadow economy in the Central and Eastern European countries, which are the members of the European Union. The empirical investigation is conducted for the years 2003–2015. We show that there is a high statistically significant positive dependence between the size of the shadow economy and military expenditures in the Baltic States. Our conclusion is that higher military expenditures indeed lead to a larger shadow economy and this result is robust to different model specifications. In order to demonstrate the importance of our results, we undertook a simulation, where we calculated how much the size of the shadow economy would increase if the size of military expenditure as a percentage of GDP were to double. For example, in the Czech Republic, such an expansion would have led to an increase in the size of the shadow economy from 11.50% to 12.96%, and in Estonia, from 18.34% to 22.72% in 2012.

Można do nich zaliczyć realizacje Daniela Libeskinda, Fumihiko Maki, Eduardo Menisa, Stevena Holla. Tworząc odpowiedni nastrój przekazują symboliczne treści.
Whereas in the past shadow was a constant companion of light in architecture, the task of a contemporary architect is usually to care for the lighting of the building. The lack of shaded spaces due to the use of extensive glazing and regular artificial lighting equals the lack of mystery – the field for imagination. Depriving architecture of the shadow means blurring of the boundaries between interior and exterior, day and night, real and virtual world, as well as social supervision. Buildings, whose creators, in addition to light, employ the “matter” of shadow as an element of architectural narrative, are not frequent examples. These include the works of Daniel Libeskind, Fumihiko Maki, Eduardo Menis, Steven Holl. While creating the right mood, they also convey symbolic content.

The text considers two metaphors describing creative freedom in modern society: secretiveness and shadow. The aim of the article was to measure the level of the shadow economy in the regions of Poland. The MIMIC (Multiple Indicators Multiple Causes) approach was applied. The fi ndings show substantial differences of shadow economy in Polish regions. The highest level of shadow economy in 2016 was identifi ed in Świętokrzyskie (32% of local GDP) while the lowest one was observed in Kujawsko-Pomorskie and Wielkopolskie (23% of regional GDP). The regional differentiation in Poland is quite big economic problem which may harm further economic development. The different efforts that have been implemented did not reduce the dissimilarities. The shadow economy seems to be important structural barrier hammering economic development in Polish regions.

Opis:
The paper examines how indicators of the shadow economy correspond to the National Accounts values. More precisely, we focus on household accounts assuming that the shadow economy should be visible in the difference between household income and consumption, as household (disposable) income is grossly underreported. Household consumption seems therefore to be a more accurate indicator in this context, as most shadow economy income is eventually spent on consumption. This implies that household savings figures should be negatively related to the values of the shadow economy; consequently, if the values relating to the shadow economy are high, savings should be low, or even negative, and vice versa. We verify this hypothesis using European cross-country data covering the years 1991-2017 with the application of MIMIC model calculations as a point of reference. The estimation results lend very little support to the hypothesis assuming that the shadow economy depresses household savings, even though we can otherwise explain comparatively well the cross-country variation in household savings and consumption growth rates.

Cień pełni funkcję metafory ludzkiej kondycji, jej kruchości i ostateczności.
Ewa Szkudlarek’s book Portrety cieni Witkacego [Witkacy’s shadow portraits] is an innovative look at the work of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz. The author discusses the visual and the metaphorical aspects of shadows by analyzing the artist’s oeuvre across different media. This has not been done so far. The shadow connects and differentiates the works of Witkacy. The multi-faceted nature of the shadow in the context of culture, psychology, psychoanalysis, and existentialism unites Witkacy’s work. The shadow acts as a metaphor for the human condition, human vulnerability and mortality.

Opis:
The article focuses on the notion of the image of self-shadow in American photography in the second half of the twentieth century, understood as a shadow silhouette of the creator captured in a photograph. The two main problems that concern the author’s research are the lack of current, theoretical study on the problem of shadow in the history of photography from the perspective of art history (V. Stoichita, R. Casati, P. Cavanagh, H. Kanaan) and the lack of the definition of the phenomenon of self-shadow and its possible types in self-portraiture. The author’s proposition of a definition of self-shadow is based on selected photographs by four artists whose works touch upon the problem of shadow in the context of relations between the “self” and the “other” (Lee Friedlander), race and subjective invisibility (Shawn W. Walker), mask and the other-self (Andy Warhol), and the intimate recording of identity (Nan Goldin). In her analyses, the author discusses the problem of the hybrid ontology of the shadow, which is both visible and visual. In this understanding, the shadow not only refers to a physical body, present “here and now” but more importantly evokes a sense of presence, even when the artist’s body is absent in the picture. The double index refers to the image leaving its mark both in reality and on light-sensitive paper. The rudimentary, vitalistic relation linking the human body with its shadow is only a starting point for analyses of the complexity of its status and symbolism. The concepts framing Andy Warhol’s Polaroid are twinning, the mask, and the Jungian theory of the shadow archetype. To discuss the self-portrait of Shawn W. Walker, the author applies the literary-philosophical concept of invisibility based on writings from Black existentialists (W.E.B. Du Bois, F. Fanon, R. Ellison). The analyses of Lee Friedlander’s photograph have been based on the psychological distinction between the figures of the “self” and the “other”. The closing concepts that frame Nan Goldin’s self-portrait are the haptic thinking subject (M. Smolińska) and the notion of a diary. The critical apparatus of the study is supplemented by contemporary analyses of the myth of Narcissus, the mythical origins of the self-portrait, and the notion of the index (after R. Krauss, M. Michałowska, M.A. Doane).

Opis:
Fairytale is an ancient literary genre which shows the important issues of life process. It is also an expression of man’s struggle between spiritual and material parts of life, which brings the image of the eternal conflicts, desires and aspirations of people. Fairytale seems to speak to a human language derived from ancient eras, and is the result of cultural heritage of mankind stored in human psyche. Heroes of fairytales are most often mortal men, experiencing adventure, rolling buoys, saving others. It’s true, using the language of myth, that heroes despite their imperfections gain power, treasure, or extraordinary powers. The metaphor of life way as a process in which suffering has an equal status as happiness, well-being is intertwined with evil, and fall walks after lifting, shows the way to the Whole man. Carl Gustav Jung, who was the creator of the concept of collective unconscious, believed that it contains elements specific to the entire humanity, independent of historical processes, either ethnic or cultural. He singled out the archetypes or primitive patterns of beliefs, ideas, patterns of living, experience, common to all men. Fairytale style reflects the complexities specific to each psyche. Integration of internal dark forces, birth of individuality, an internal process of growth, overcoming various conflicts and obstacles in the way of individuation are spiritual experiences which every man undergoes. Fairytale brings the opportunity to discover unconscious resources, which equip the fate of every human being and that s/he which consciously uses to build its standalone “I.” We are accustomed to see in fairytale a genre suitable only for children, which in addition to shaping imagination can overcome fears, integrate ignorance tame in terms of psychological or existential everyday experiences to build relationships with others. All of these components are elements of significant awareness of the potential in the development of small humans, but they are also important in achieving fully human adulthood. An adult is not different much from a child in terms of awareness. S/he is also familiar with the difficulties in coping with life, escapes from everyday life, playing down the sphere of the Shadow or the use of defensive mechanisms to avoid responsibility. But what is considered a child in the way of shaping identity in the life of an adult can have important consequences in forming of self-destruction or destruction. Therefore, it becomes important to understand the motivations of human activities, especially with regard to the integration of opposites by the construction of personality, and of how this path should be carried forward if it would lead to performance. It is important to a modern man to know how to play an important role in psychic sphere of his/her life and discover secrets of the unconscious. Then it is possible to find out that a diagnosis or “treatment” of suffering will no longer need any therapist. Fairytales of Hans Christian Andersen are among exceptional pieces. Gifted with extraordinary sensitivity, the author constructed the story of philosophy, which is characterized by great wisdom of life. You can tell that the writer with a thorough insight studied the problem of man’s place in the world, eyeing his/her dilemmas and being there. His observations were gathered in large collections, because this genre was probably the closest to him when it comes to transfer culturally established standards of ethical behaviour.
