Opis:
Success of spatial planning and urban growth management depends on our knowledge about cities and systems of settlements. Dominating in the relevant domestic theory views are continue to be almost unchanged since eighties of the 20th Century and can be described with the gravitational model. General overview of spatial development processes provides opportunity to identify at least two patterns of spatial organisation associated with the subsequent stages of settlement systems’ structural development. Structural organisation at the earliest stage can be described with linear-nodal model. Lately this pattern of spatial organisation had been substituted by gravitational structures. Establishment of such structures were predefined by establishment of centralised mechanisms of territorial management. Within every stage of structural development three phases are identified: origin and development (1), sustainability (2) and destruction (3). The first phase of origin and development overlaps the last phase of the previous stage. The contemporary period is characterised as the last phase of gravitational structural organisation and transition to the new pattern of spatial organisation on the basis of network model.

Investigating ancient Pueblo culture from the North American Southwest is challenging task involving cooperationof scientists from different disciplines, mainly archaeology, history, anthropology, and linguistics. There isalso a large body of information in native oral tradition that has enormous potential for enriching our knowledgeof the past and our understanding of how Pueblo societies functioned. The paper focuses on one of the mostintriguing periods of Pueblo Indians culture, the thirteenth century A.D., in the central Mesa Verde region onpresent Utah-Colorado border. It was the time of great development of Pueblo societies and close to the centuryfall of the settlement system and total migration from the area to what is present-day Arizona and New Mexico. One of the projects in the area is Sand Canyon-Castle Rock Community Archaeological Project. The projectfocuses on analysis and reconstruction of the settlement structure and socio-cultural changes that took placein Pueblo culture during the thirteenth century A.D. in Sand Canyon, Rock Creek Canyon and several othersmall canyons located in one subarea within the Mesa Verde region, Colorado.

Existing ethnic traditions, especially the socio-economic, spiritual and political as factors development of Iran, have led to certain, specific urbanization processes in this country. This is particularly evident in the accelerated industrialization and not so rapid social infrastructure development. Simultaneously with the emergence of agglomeration and the construction of new cities, poor quality of the urban environment is observed. The presence of many environmental problems requires a deep researches by planners to create the proposal how to resolve them.

Opis:
Based on the payments and settlement system, the influence of the topology of capital flow networks on the extra short-term liquidity demand is investigated. Through modelling the circulating mechanism of liquidity in a network, its different influencing factors are analysed. The factors relating to the strength of nodes and leakage of liquidity that influences the liquidity demands of real-time settlements are studied from the perspective of both the system and members, using different simulation methods. The results show that strength will lead the member’s liquidity demand to increase but the strength distribution will lead the system’s liquidity demand to decrease, in cases with no leakage effect or unchanged leakage effect. The liquidity demand of the entire system is positive compared to the amount of leakage effect but uncorrelated to the distribution of the leakage effect among members, if the effect of strength distribution is unchanged. If the effects of strength, strength distribution and leakage are changed together, the latter is the dominant factor that influences the liquidity demand of both system and members. The above findings are useful for the management and supervision of short-term liquidity demand in complex financial systems, and for liquidity risk management and liquidity rescue policymaking.

Opis:
This article presents the results of geographical and historical research exploring rural settlement on royal lands within Szadek district in the pre-Partition period. In the first part the origins of the villages are examined, mainly on the basis of preserved documents, including their location and ownership/administrative status. They belonged either to a separate Szadek tenure or Sieradz starosty estate, or constituted isolated, small leaseholds on the monarch’s land. Next, analysis of socio-economic changes in the villages is carried out, based on tax registers of 1511, 1518 and 1552–1553, inspections and inventories of royal estates of 1564, 1616–1620, 1628–1632, 1659–1665, and hearth-tax rate of 1775. The study includes the demographic potential of the villages, their socio-agrarian structure, area, types of agricultural activity, profitability and sources of income, and the range of feudal dues. Dynamic and comparative research used in the study made it possible to identify development stages: period of economic prosperity and population growth (16th century), period of regress and depopulation (17th century), and period of restoration and economic reactivation (18th century).

Opis:
The main aim of the article is to assess the usage of the following methods for the settlement structure analysis: satellite images interpretation, Zipf rule and nearest neighbour index. This assessment is carried out during the analysis of the relationship between socio-economic development level and the diversification and complexity of settlement Settlement network development was especially investigated in the 1950. and 1960. R. B. Potter (1999) summarising heretofore research stated that the balanced and hierarchised settlement network does not develop in LEDCs. Therefore it was interesting to check if such a statement is not exaggerated. The analytical data were obtained from LANDSAT ETM+ images interpretation. Due to it, the coefficients of variation for particular countries were calculated to investigate settlement network diversification. The diversification was presented also on choropleth maps. Afterwards it was analysed if the Zipf rules (classic, using population number data and modified, using built-up areas values obtained from satellite images) describe the settlement network complexity in countries under investigation. The nearest neighbour index was used to check spatial complexity of the networks. By the networks diversification analysis, it was proved that there was a relationship between socio-economic level and networks diversity in the countries under investigation, although there are also other processes influencing this relationship. There is intense spatial dynamism in core regions and neighbouring peripheries in the countries with the most diverse networks (the most developed counties). In the least diverse countries there is the low spatial dynamism or there were significant decentralisation forces in the past. By the networks complexity analysis, the development level and networks complexity relationship was revealed. In the relatively less developed countries the settlement networks were far from equilibrium (primate city pattern) and built-up areas dispersed. In more developed countries settlement networks were close to equilibrium and concentrated, so compact urbanised areas were present. Changes in networks complexity take place in the most developed areas, however, peripheries are spread across the overwhelming part of the countries, which is irrespective to the level of their development. Hence, networks’ structures enhancement and their dispersion occur only in some parts of the countries. Therefore R. B. Potter’s and others statements seem to underestimate the LEDCs’ processes. The visual satellite images interpretation allowed the analysis of the data rarely used in settlement structure researches. This enabled the analysis with lack of population statistical data limitations, e.g. unreliable data not covering the whole population within the city or town, data not comparable between different countries (problem of different city definitions), from different years for each country. The comparison of modified and classic Zipf rules showed that the modification was correct. The data availability for modified rule was also much greater. This method occurred useful in LEDCs as spatial urbanised areas expansion is characteristic for the urbanisation process there (Cohen, 2006). The nearest neighbour index NNI analysis was also much more precise and due to the greater data availability, statistically significant. The conclusions of the methodological aim can be extrapolated, providing for the limitations described, for other countries not being covered by the research.

An extensive archaeological prospection along the coasts of Failaka recorded over 180 sites, different stone structures, surface pottery assemblages, farms and enclosures. These were registered, documented and mapped. Stone by stone plans were drawn up of a number of substantial structures that were cleaned and some general observations were made. All prospected and cleaned structures proved to be built of local ashlar sandstone straight on solid ground or bedrock. All kinds of mortar and plaster was used for building construction. Flat stones of similar dimensions were carefully selected. Buildings were neatly designed with entrances always in the middle of the front wall. Archaeological sites of Al-Sabbahiya, Um al-Dakhan, Matitah, Kharaib el-Desht with a density of different historical structures dating from the mid- and late Islamic period are found in the southern regions of Failaka Island.

Opis:
In urban areas, the control of ground surface settlement is an important issue during shield tunnel-boring machine (TBM) tunneling. These ground movements are affected by many machine control parameters. In this article, a finite difference (FD) model is developed using Itasca FLAC-3D to numerically simulate the whole process of shield TBM tunneling. The model simulates important components of the mechanized excavation process including slurry pressure on the excavation face, shield conicity, installation of segmental lining, grout injection in the annular void, and grout consolidation. The analysis results from the proposed method are compared and discussed in terms of ground movements (both vertical and horizontal) with field measurements data. The results reveal that the proposed 3D simulation is sufficient and can reasonably reproduce all the operations achieved by the TBM. In fact, the results show that the TBM parameters can be controlled to have acceptable levels of surface settlement. In particular, it seems that moderate face pressure can reduce ground movement significantly and, most importantly, can prevent the occurrence of face-expected instability when the shield crosses very weak soil layers. The shield conicity has also an important effect on ground surface settlement, which can be partly compensated by the grout pressure during tail grouting. Finally, the injection pressure at the rear of the shield significantly reduces the vertical displacements at the crown of the tunnel and, therefore, reduces the settlement at the ground surface.
