    The article presents the results of research on the remains of an Early Medieval (eighth – tenth centuries) tribal fortified settlement in Garbów, Lublin voivodeship and its settlement facilities in the area within a radius of 15 km from the settlement centre. Based on the theory of “territory exploited by the settlement”, the authors make attempts to reconstruct elementary settlement communities and their economic activity within a radius of 1 and 2 km. In addition, they indicate natural conditions of the settlement and the role of the centre (a fortified settlement) in the defence system of he settlement area.

    Opis:
    The paper analyses several aspects of the historic development of the local name system in the old Nurski district in the Nur Land of the old Duchy of Mazovia. The analysis of various sources clearly shows that the western part of the region is characterised almost exclusively by one-part names, while the eastern is dominated by binominal names. This tendency is motivated by extralinguistic factors, the most important of them being the old land-possession structure in the area. Both parts of the researched region show specific dynamics of the process of creating settlement names. The process was also influenced by Polish lesser nobility, i.e. continuous patterns in the naming of settlements, whereas many toponyms appearing in historical sources are today non-existent. The analysis also reveals the predominance of ancestral names as a separate part of binominal names, as well as the low productivity of patronymic names.
    Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zbadanie niektórych aspektów rozwoju systemu nazw miejscowych na obszarze dawnego powiatu nurskiego w ziemi nurskiej województwa mazowieckiego. Analiza zgromadzonego materiału nazewniczego wykazała, że w zachodniej części badanego terenu występują niemal wyłącznie nazwy jednoczłonowe, we wschodniej zaś dominują liczebnie nazwy zestawione. Podział ten uwarunkowany jest czynnikami pozajęzykowymi. Wynika on z dawnej struktury własności ziemskiej na tym obszarze. Obie części analizowanego terytorium wykazywały też różną dynamikę procesu kształtowania się nazw miejscowych. Część drobnoszlachecką charakteryzowała znaczna płynność zachodzących tam procesów nazewniczych. Przejawia się to m. in. w tym, że wiele toponimów odnotowanych w źródłach historycznych, obecnie nie funkcjonuje. W tej części badanego obszaru odnotowano zdecydowaną przewagę nazw rodowych, będących członami odróżniającymi nazw zestawionych. Nazwy patronimiczne występując w tej samej funkcji (jako człony odróżniające zestawień) wykazywały tam niską produktywność.

    Issues of autonomy in local government is considered primarily in relation to the basic units of this form of governance, it is in relation to the commune and district. Independence is conditional on having a certain financial autonomy or a substantial dose of financial decentralization. The situation is different as far as financial independence or its lack in auxiliary units (settlements and districts in medium and large cities) is concerned. The basic plan is the public budget which occurs only in the commune, district and province. In the case of districts and neighborhoods is the constituting authority to decide whether it will take the initiative of establishment of district councils, housing councils and equip those in the power and fi nancial resources to carry out their tasks. For the purposes of the characteristics of auxiliary units were selected: the 6 provincial cities, where effectiveness of the district councils, housing councils is noticeable, 6 cities, which have lost their status of the provincial capital, and 6 district towns of medium size. As a result of this study examples of large provincial cities has been the development of the district local government, housing estate. However, not all former provincial city and county have been set up auxiliary units, although there are housings in the tradition of the inhabitants, the nomenclature and housing cooperatives. As stated, most relied on ancillary units in the form of district councils, councils of settlements, districts, councils included actively in the management and operation issues of settlements, increasing the quality of life of their inhabitants.

    This article presents the results of geographical and historical research exploring rural settlement on royal lands within Szadek district in the pre-Partition period. In the first part the origins of the villages are examined, mainly on the basis of preserved documents, including their location and ownership/administrative status. They belonged either to a separate Szadek tenure or Sieradz starosty estate, or constituted isolated, small leaseholds on the monarch’s land. Next, analysis of socio-economic changes in the villages is carried out, based on tax registers of 1511, 1518 and 1552–1553, inspections and inventories of royal estates of 1564, 1616–1620, 1628–1632, 1659–1665, and hearth-tax rate of 1775. The study includes the demographic potential of the villages, their socio-agrarian structure, area, types of agricultural activity, profitability and sources of income, and the range of feudal dues. Dynamic and comparative research used in the study made it possible to identify development stages: period of economic prosperity and population growth (16th century), period of regress and depopulation (17th century), and period of restoration and economic reactivation (18th century).

    The article presents the results of research on a specific recreation space – holiday plots. It is an attempt to identify the conditions for the development of holiday settlements, using the example of the gmina of Stężyca situated in the centre of the Kashubian Lake District. The authors indicate the conditions related to the location of holiday plots, as well as the motivations and expectations of their owners. As a result of the study, it was concluded that natural and landscape assets, as well as temporal and spatial accessibility determined the development of the holiday settlement in the gmina of Stężyca. Equally significant factors are family ties and sentiment towards their place of birth.

    W artykule sformułowano kilka uwag i spostrzeżeń o charakterze teoretyczno-metodologicznym na temat dziejów osadnictwa na obszarze dawnego powiatu orłowskiego, a także zasygnalizowano pojawienie się nowych punktów osadniczych na wspomnianym terytorium. W tekście wykazano krytycyzm względem formułowania wniosków na temat chronologii poszczególnych osiedli, wyciąganych na podstawie błędnie określonego kształtu wsi, zwłaszcza zaś przesuwania metryki osad do okresu wczesnego średniowiecza. Ponadto udało się wskazać na nową datę pierwszego zapisu źródłowego odnośnie do kilku miejscowości znajdujących się na terenie powiatu.
    In this article, several theoretical and methodological remarks and observations have been formulated regarding the history of settlement in the former Orłów district, and also the emergence of new settlement points in this area. This text demonstrates criticism towards formulating conclusions about the chronology of individual settlement points, drawn on the basis of an incorrectly defined shape of the village, and especially the shifting of the settlement metrics to the early Middle Ages. Moreover, it was possible to indicate the new date for the first source entry for several localities in the district.

    Niniejszy artykuł stanowi przegląd rozsiedlenia rodowego szlachty w południowej części dawnego powiatu brzezińskiego do początku XVI w. W oparciu o zapiski heraldyczne i sądowe oraz materiał źródłowy dokonano przeglądu najważniejszych rodzin szlacheckich z uwzględnieniem ich przynależności do konkretnych herbów. W toku niniejszych studiów dało się zidentyfikować takie rody szlacheckie, jak Awdańcy oraz Bielinowie.
    This article provides an overview of the ancestral settlement of the nobility in the southern part of the former Brzeziny district until the beginning of the 16th century. Based on heraldic and court records as well as source material, the most important noble families were reviewed, taking into account their affiliation to specific coats of arms. In the course of this study, it was possible to identify such noble families as the Awdaniec and Bielina.

    Among the cities of Russia and Europe, including the Baltic Sea region, it is possible to single out the category of cities (towns) with a population of 20 to 50 thousand inhabitants, which is of particular interest for study, since it is the borderline category between small and medium- sized towns. Semi-medium-sized towns perform various functions in regional settlement systems, especially as centers for the formation of socio-economic regions. Another important factor in regional development is the active participation of semi-medium-sized towns in international cooperation with municipalities of the EU border states. The study deals with semi-medium- sized towns and their functions in five regions of Russia’s Northwestern Federal District, and the socio-economic regions formed by semi-medium-sized towns are visually represented. As an example, five semi-medium-sized towns of the Kaliningrad region are considered, with emphasis on the role of each town in regional development. The author analyses the participation of semimedium- sized towns of the Kaliningrad region in cross-border cooperation projects, identifying tendencies in territorial interactions of semi-medium-sized towns in the region with municipalities of the EU countries undertaken as part of trans-border and cross-border cooperation and benefits this cooperation has for the region.

    In this article the formation features of the largest Lviv district of Sykhiv were reviewed. Main transformation processes of workers settlement, which was constructed near the industrial hub of Sykhiv in 70–80ies of the last century, and establishment of the large panel housing estate during the period of independent Ukraine were highlighted. In this regard, major factors that have effect on the formation of housing estate new identity and it conversion into integral part of the contemporary Lviv were traced.

    Odszukane w zbiorach Gabinetu Rycin Biblioteki Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego rękopiśmienne plany wsi („kolonii”) założonych w latach 1799–1802 przez władze pruskie w okolicach Łodzi, stały się zachętą do przybliżenia ich historii. Na podstawie źródeł archiwalnych i literatury zrekonstruowano trudne początki gospodarowania sprowadzonych do nich osadników z głębi Niemiec. Scharakteryzowano przesłanki i omówiono czynniki pozwalające omawianym wsiom zachować układ przestrzenny oraz odrębność kulturową mieszkańców.
    Within 1799–1802 Prussian authorities created in the South Prussia province several villages inhabited with peasants brought from Schwaben. All of them were located in woodland and were to be reclaimed by the coming people. There are maps and plans preserved showing five of the villages hence it enabled more detailed description. All the villages, called colonies, had a linear and regular housing scheme. The amount of land given to the particular peasant was determined by his wealth. The area of the biggest farmlands was not bigger than 4 łan (67 h). Yet the most common were farmlands covering 5–15 h. All of the villages received help from the Prussian administrative offices and were given livestock, tools and seeds. After six years free of any chargé, settlers were obliged to pay rent. The expenses on forming the villages were never reimbursed since the South Prussia became a part of the Duchy of Warsaw and after 1815 a part of Polish Kingdom. The inhabitants preserved their cultural autonomy till 1945y. They were Lutherans and spoke Schwaben dialect difficult to understand even for other German settlers.

    The article aims to reconstruct the number of inhabitants in the Gubin district in the early post-war years. The statistical data available include previously unused source material in the form of reports and lists of the district administrator and the State Repatriation Office (PUR). The displacement of Germans and the influx of Poles will be discussed, the district’s population levels will be given with a division into town and village, and the speed of change in 1945–1949 will be indicated, as well as the population structure in terms of sex, age, nationality and direction of influx (repatriates from the East and West and displaced people from central Poland).
    Artykuł ma na celu odtworzenie stanu liczbowego mieszkańców powiatu gubińskiego w pierwszych powojennych latach. Zebrane dane statystyczne obejmują niewykorzystany dotąd szerzej materiał źródłowy w postaci sprawozdań i wykazów starostwa powiatowego oraz PUR. Omówiono wysiedlanie Niemców i napływ ludności polskiej, przedstawiono liczbę ludności powiatu z podziałem na miasto i wieś oraz wskazano dynamikę zmian w latach 1945–1949, a także strukturę ludności pod względem płci, wieku, narodowości i kierunku napływu (repatrianci ze wschodu i zachodu oraz przesiedleńcy z Polski centralnej).

    In the article, three reports of Olsztyn City Management prepared for the Presidium Office of the State National Council and covering October, November and December 1945 are presented. The published descriptive-statistical reports, containing information about the most important elements of the process of reconstruction and about living conditions of the population, constitute a valuable material for research on the history of one of the most important Polish urban centers on the so-called Regained Territories after World War II.
