Opis:
To introduce the special issue this paper reviews the use of protists as bioindicators. Seven key advantages of protist bioindicators are highlighted, namely: environmental sensitivity, functional importance, distribution, size and numbers, response times, ease of analysis and preservation potential. Protist bioindicators have been used in a wide range of contexts from ecosystem restoration to fire history, and particularly environmental pollution. Most major protist groups have been used as bioindicators with diatoms, foraminifera and testate amoebae particularly widely studied. To increase uptake of protist bioindication techniques in routine environmental monitoring technique development should consider the needs of stakeholders from an early stage. Papers in this special issue reflect the diversity of both protist life and possible bioindicator applications.

In response to the growing needs of spatial recognition of the intensity of agricultural crop production, a new haNDVI indicator was developed, that measures the amplitude of the NDVI indicator related to the harvest. The proposed way of calculating haNDVI is to use the minimum and maximum functions for the raster layers set from the growing season. This avoids the need for preliminary classification of crops, including to determine the moment of harvest. It has been shown that the haNDVI indicator calculated on aggregated NDVI layers with a resolution of 1 km is correlated with soil quality indexes, NPK fertilization intensity (r = 0.69) and the share of crops in the total area (r = 0.86) for municipalities. The properties of the haNDVI indicator make it particularly useful for the initial, rapid scanning of environmental quality in terms of the intensity of plant production and indicating the hazards locations associated with the use of fertilizers and plant protection products.

Changing coastal zones in Indonesia, such as coral reefs, seagrass, and mangroves, have an impact on tropical ecosystems. Excessive exploitation and sedimentation, in particular, have threatened the mangrove at Segara Anakan Cilacap. In order to evaluate temporal land cover changes and the impact of high siltation on the Segara Anakan lagoon system in Cilacap, Indonesia, a research was conducted. The land cover data from SPOT 4 was available in 2008, and the Sentinel-2A data was available in 2019. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was used to enhance the Macro Class with supervised classification utilizing Maximum Likelihood techniques. Mangroves and water bodies declined between 2009 and 2019, whereas settlements and farmland areas increased, according to this study. In the western part of Segara Anakan, extensive siltation altered the biomass, structure, and composition of mangrove vegetation. At high sedimented habitats, Acanthus and Derris dominate, followed by Nypa. The changes in land cover and land use had an impact on socioeconomic factors. Decreases in water bodies and mangrove areas, as well as an increase in farmland, were significantly linked to a shift in society’s livelihoods from fishermen to farmers. The destruction of mangrove habitats in the Segara Anakan has been accelerated by anthropogenic activity and population pressure. Because this sensitive environment is constantly threatened by anthropogenic activity and climate change, effective management of the Segara Anakan Lagoon mangrove ecosystem is important for its long-term viability.

Opis:
The Zaer granitic massif is one of the most important Variscan granitoids in the Central Zone of the Western Moroccan Meseta. It is characterized by a deformation which is manifested by a network of fractures of different scales. Thanks to the technology currently available, many geological studies rely heavily on the mapping of geological lineaments, especially in structural geology. This has become more reliable with access to earth observation data using optical and radar sensors as well as the various remote sensing techniques. Therefore, the objective of this work is to determine the potential of Landsat 8, ASTER, Sentinel 2 and radar Sentinel 1 datasets using the automatic method to extract lineaments. Furthermore, this work focuses on quantitative lineament analysis to determine lineament trends and subsequently compare them with global and regional tectonic movement trends. The lineaments obtained through different satellite images were validated by including the shaded relief maps, the slope map, the correlation with the pre-existing faults in the geological maps as well as the field investigation. Comparison of these results indicates that Sentinel 1 imagery provides a better correlation between automated extraction lineaments and major fault zones. Thus, Sentinel 1 data is more effective in mapping geological lineaments. The final lineament map obtained from the VH and VV polarizations shows two major fault systems, mainly oriented NE-SW and NW-SE to NNW-SSE.

At present, sentinel lymph node biopsy is a standard procedure to assess the advancement of breast cancer and cutaneous melanoma. The aim of the study was to assess the role of the sentinel lymph node biopsy in the treatment of patients with breast cancer in our own material. Material and methods. Analyzed was medical documentation of 258 patients with initially operable breast cancer, qualified for operation with sentinel lymph node biopsy in 2004-2014 in the Department of Surgery of the 4th Military Teaching Hospital. A few hours prior to the planned surgery, radioisotope (technitium-99 sulfur colloid) was applied in the area of tumor or under the areola. 1-2 hours after administering the tracer, the lymphoscintigraphy with the labelling of the sentinel lymph node on the skin was performed. Results. On the basis of the gathered material, obtained were the following parameters: sensitivity – 100%, and specificity – 94.6%. Four cases were false negative (5.5%). Conclusions. 1. Marking the sentinel lymph node in breast cancer, based on the single visualisation method with the use of radioisotope, is a useful and effective technique. 2. The factor influencing the results of the sentinel lymph node biopsy (true positive and negative results and false negative result) was the number of the excised lymph nodes except for the sentinel lymph node. 3. Patients with estrogen receptor expression had often metastases to sentinel lymph node (145 cases – 56%). 4. The false negative rate, i.e. 5.5% in our material, is within the limits of acceptability given in the literature. 5. The sentinel lymph node biopsy performed by the experienced surgical team is a reliable diagnostic tool with a low complication rate.

Dynamic phenomena, both anthropogenic and natural, usually occur unexpectedly, at high speed. During such an event, changes in ground surface morphology become rapid. What is more, permanent ground monitoring in the areas of that transformations is usually not carried out. Therefore, the comprehensive description of the effects of such phenomena – especially after some time since the event took place – is difficult and often impossible. Nevertheless, the research on qualitative and quantitative characteristics of dynamic phenomena, the values and directions of surface movements induced by their occurrence play an important role. At present, the application of satellite radar interferometry in order to assess displacements caused by earthquakes became a pattern. However, the Sentinel mission, which is being run by the European Space Agency, has opened up a new opportunities of ground deformation monitoring, particularly in the areas affected by dynamic phenomena. The authors decided to investigate whether a mining induced tremor generates surface movements and what the range as well as the dynamism of those movements are. The use of differential radar satellite interferometry DInSAR based on the Sentinel imagery radars allowed us to deepen the investigation on the ground movements caused by mining related earthquakes.

Opis:
Effective assessment of environmental changes requires an update of vegetation maps as it is an indicator of both local and global development. It is therefore important to formulate methods which would ensure constant monitoring. It can be achieved with the use of satellite data which makes the analysis of hard-to-reach areas such as alpine ecosystems easier. Every year, more new satellite data is available. Its spatial, spectral, time, and radiometric resolution is improving as well. Despite significant achievements in terms of the methodology of image classification, there is still the need to improve it. It results from the changing needs of spatial data users, availability of new kinds of satellite sensors, and development of classification algorithms. The article focuses on the application of Sentinel-2 and hyperspectral EnMAP images to the classification of alpine plants of the Karkonosze (Giant) Mountains according to the: Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), and Maximum Likelihood (ML) algorithms. The effects of their work is a set of maps of alpine and subalpine vegetation as well as classification error matrices. The achieved results are satisfactory as the overall accuracy of classification with the SVM method has reached 82% for Sentinel-2 data and 83% for EnMAP data, which confirms the applicability of image data to the monitoring of alpine plants.

Dry marginal agricultural land (DryMAL) potentially use as an alternative resource for crop production. DryMAL defined as land having low natural fertility due to its intrinsic properties and forming environmental factors. This study uses Sentinel-2A imagery to map the spatial extent, compare the result of the classification, and identify the change in DryMAL occupation. The area of study (461.9 km2) is part of Situbondo Regency and is located at the eastern part of East Java, Indonesia. Sentinel-2A image captured in dry-season of 2018 use for this study. Then, supervised image classification using a maximum likelihood algorithm use for image treatment and processing. Furthermore, 450 ground control points for training areas collected during the field surveys. Five bands use in the classification process. The maps produced from the classification process were then compared to the land-use map from the year 2000. The change in DryMAL occupation from 2000 to 2018 was calculated by comparing the classified and land-use map. Supervised classification yielded an overall accuracy of 95.8% and a kappa accuracy of 93.2%. The classification produced six (6) classes of land use: (1) forest, (2) pavement or built-up area, (3) irrigated paddy field, (4) non-irrigated rural area, (5) dry marginal land and (6) water body. Globally, during the last two decades, regional development led by the Regency occupied more DryMAL area for developing plantation. The effort reduces the amount of non-irrigated and converting to the plantation, pavement areas, and irrigated paddy-field.

Opis:
One of the most promising new applications of remote observation satellite systems (RO) is the near-shore bathymetry estimation based on spaceborn multispectral imageries. In recent years, many experiments aiming to estimate bathymetry in optically shallow water with the use of remote optical observations have been presented. In this paper, optimal models of satellite derived bathymetry (SDB) for relatively turbid waters of the South Baltic Sea were presented. The obtained results were analysed in terms of depth error estimation, spatial distribution, and overall quality. The models were calibrated based on sounding (in-situ) data obtained by a single-beam echo sounder, which was retrieved from the Maritime Office in Gdynia, Poland. The remote observations for this study were delivered by the recently deployed European Space Agency Sentinel-2 satellite observation system. A detailed analysis of the obtained results has shown that the tested methods can be successfully applied for the South Baltic region at depths of 12-18 meters. However, significant limitations were observed. The performed experiments have revealed that the error of model calibration, expressed in meters (RMSE), equals up to 10-20% of the real depth and is, generally, case dependent. To overcome this drawback, a novel indicator of determining the maximal SDB depth was proposed. What is important, the proposed SDB quality indicator is derived only on the basis of remotely registered data and therefore can be applied operationally.

Geomatic tools could be used efficiently for urban development planning. The problem of the study lies in the extensive land use of terrains that are now suitable for heavy construction which slows down the development of new facilities. Furthermore, the authorities are forced to plan future settlements around Setif, at a distance of 8 to 12 kilometers from the city limits, threatening the long-term viability of construction and the ring of farmland that connects them to the core city. This must be done during the planning stage based on a diachronic analysis of all the natural and physical factors/parameters. The main objective of this research is to explore the application of landscape metrics to the analysis and monitoring of urban growth in the city of Setif, north-east of Algeria. For this purpose, our research paper uses Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) techniques based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and the Angle Mapper Algorithm (SAM) target method for the analysis of urban land planning and sustainable urban planning of Setif. In the result of these analyses we propose suitability/buildability maps with more suitable construction sites. The research method is based on a 17-year time series dataset compiled from the Sentinel 2A and Landsat imagery between 2004 and 2021. Additionally, we used a cadastral Vs geotechnical overlay to estimate soil capacity. This work proves again that the integration of RS and GIS techniques allows for scientific identification of the lands suitable for urban development (LAUP).

Opis:
Sentinel lymph node biopsy in patients with early-stage breast cancer is an example of a surgical procedure which, despite its long history, has had no uniform standard of performance implemented. This is a problem which concerns both the indications and limitations of this method as well as many of the technical aspects connected with the procedure. This paper is an attempt to resolve some of the controversies mentioned above based on the clinical experience of the authors. Material and method: The group consisted of 974 patients suffering from breast cancer and treated from January 2004 through October 2011 in the Clinical Department of Breast Cancer and Reconstructive Surgery of the Oncology Center in Bydgoszcz who were also scheduled for sentinel lymph node removal. Data regarding the preoperative diagnosis of the primary tumor, such as minimally invasive methods (FNAB, core biopsy, and mammotome biopsy) or open surgical biopsy (tumorectomy, quadrantectomy, or past breast operations with no relation to the current treatment) of the location of the lesion and the sentinel lymph node identification method (combined isotope-dye, isotope, or dye method) was analyzed. Results: Ninety-four point five percent of all sought nodes were detected. The detection rate for the combined SLN marking and isotope methods amounted to 94.4% each, whereas in the case of the dye method, it amounted to 100%. Of all the patients who underwent surgery for the first time, 95.0% had the sentinel lymph node location isolated during the operation, whereas in the case of patients who had previously undergone surgical treatment of the breast or surgical biopsy of a tumor it was 92.1%. Moreover, the location of the tumor within the breast did not have a significant impact on the success of the sentinel lymph node biopsy. Conclusions: The surgical biopsy of the primary lesion preceding the removal of the sentinel lymph node does not have a significant impact on the possibility of the detection of the node sought. The situation is similar with regard to the selected method of sentinel lymph node detection and the location of the primary tumor. As a result, it is possible to extend the usage of the sentinel lymph node biopsy into a wider range of cases.
Materiał i metoda: Badaniami objęto grupę 974 chorych z rakiem piersi zakwalifikowanych do wycięcia węzła wartownika, leczonych na Oddziale Klinicznym Nowotworów Piersi i Chirurgii Rekonstrukcyjnej Centrum Onkologii im. prof. Umożliwia to rozszerzenie niektórych wskazań do zastosowania biopsji węzła wartownika.

The increase in demand for food and the need to predict the impact of a warming climate on vegetation makes it critical that the best tools for assessing crop production are found. Chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlF) has been proposed as a direct indicator of photosynthesis and plant condition. The aim of this paper is to study the feasibility of estimating ChlF from spectral vegetation indices derived from Sentinel-2, in order to monitor crop stress and investigate ChlF changes in response to surface temperatures and meteorological observations. The regressions between thirty three Sentinel-2-derived VIs, and ChlF measured on the ground were evaluated in order to estimate the best predictors of ChlF. The r-Pearson correlation and polynomial linear regression were used. For maize, the highest correlation between ChlF and VIs were found for NDII (r=0.65) and for SIPI (r=-0.68). The weakest relationship between VIs and ChlF were found for sugar beets. Despite this, it should be noted that the highest correlation for sugar beets appeared for EVI (r=0.45) and S2REP (r=0.43). The results of this study indicate the need for a synergy of low and high resolution satellite data that will enable a more detailed analysis for estimating fluorescence and its relation to climatic conditions, environmental aspects, and VIs derived from satellite images.

The understanding of the spatial and temporal dynamics of farmland processes is essential to ensure the proper crop monitoring and early decision making needed to support efficient resource management in agriculture. By creating appropriate crop management strategies, one can increase harvest efficiency while reducing costs, waste, chemical spraying, and inhibiting the impact of biotic and abiotic factors on crop stress. Only reliable spatial information makes it possible to comprehend the influence of various factors on the environment. The main objective of the research presented in the paper was to assess the possibility of using maps of vegetation and soil indices, such as NDVI, SAVI, IRECI, CIred-edge, PSRI and HMSSI, calculated on the basis of images from the Sentinel-2 satellite, to qualitatively determine the increased amount of heavy metals in the soil in the areas of small agricultural plots around the Barania Góra nature reserve in Poland. The conducted pilot project shows that the spectral indices: NDVI, SAVI, IRECI, CIred-edge, PSRI, and HMSSI, calculated on the basis of images from Sentinel-2, have the potential to assess the content of nickel zinc, chromium and cobalt in the soil on agricultural plots. Opis:
The condition of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020 characterizing DKI Jakarta, Surabaya, and Yogyakarta Provinces which have a high population density in 2019, necessitates implementing Large-Scale Social Restrictions (LSSR) to control or break the chain of the spread of COVID-19. The LSSR policy that limits community activities, be it business activities, transportation, and the industrial sector, will impact social activities and the environment due to the reduced intensity of community activities. Therefore, this study aimed to determine changes in the carbon monoxide (CO) levels in Jakarta, Surabaya and Yogyakarta during the pre-pandemic and during the pandemic. The method used is the tropospheric CO concentration extracted from the Sentinel-5P satellite data. The CO data were retrieved and calculated using Google Earth Engine. The COVID-19 pandemic reduced CO level by 19.7%, 14.9%, and 21%, respectively. The paired t-test shows no significant difference from before the COVID-19 pandemic, with a significance of 0.05. The highest pre-pandemic average and total CO concentration levels were 0.042 and 1.0198 mol/m2 in Yogyakarta, respectively, whereas the lowest during the pandemic were 0.02845 and 0.6828 mol/m2 in Surabaya. Overall, the three cities have a weak relationship between CO level and precipitation as well as temperatures and CO level.

The surface water table level is a crucial factor for the existence of wetland habitats, and valuable from the point of view of environmental protection. In particular, surface water table in a hydrological year play an important role, affecting the seasonal changes in conditions of the development of species inhabiting a given patch of vegetation. The occurrence of floods often determines the possibility of survival of a given plant community. Information on the seasonal variability of surface waters, and above all the range of seasonal floods, is very important from the point of view of planning protection activities in National Parks in order to preserve wetland habitats. Nowadays, remote sensing data is an important source of spatial information, particularly those characterized by low cost data acquisition and processing. One such source is imagery collected from satellites, along with products freely distributed by the European Space Agency. Satellites of the Sentinel constellation provide multi-spectral optical remote sensing images recorded at visible and infrared wavelengths. Due to the short satellite revisit time of the Sentinel, the images from this satellite constitute a potential source of information for the monitoring of moisture on wetlands with a high temporal resolution. In this study, the authors aim to demonstrate the possibilities associated with the use of satellite images to monitor the range of a free surface water table in the pilot area located within the basin of the Łasica Channel, located in the Kampinos National Park (Poland). The accuracy of the results of the remote sensing transformations will be assessed using high resolution RGB images obtained with the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and control points measurements. The maps of free water table has been acquired as an result of ensemble regressors (Random Forest, Extra Trees, Bagging). Regressors has been learned and applied for two sessions. Promising results were obtained indicating the possibility of using the proposed method on a similar scale.

Coastal zones are not only the fundaments for local economics based on trade, shipping and transport services, but also a source of food, energy, and resources. Apart from offering diverse opportunities for recreation and tourism, coastal zones provide protection against storms and other meteorological disturbances. Environmental information is also essential because of the direct influence on a country’s maritime zones, which are territorial sea and exclusive economic zones. Keeping local communities and ecosystems healthy requires monitoring and assessing of all the vital changes of territorial sea and its baseline. The paper presents a method and a concept of a system that provides an efficient means of automatic analysis of spatial data provided by satellite observation systems (optical Landsat 8 and SAR Sentinel 1) in order to monitor, and detect, changes in the coastline. The proposed methodology is based on a set of algorithms that enable one to trace and detect changes in coastline shape, and eventual damage to marine infrastructure, such as breakwaters and harbours, relying on high resolution satellite observational products.

Opis:
The Kendal Regency area is one of the areas on the northern coast of Central Java that has been experiencing rapid industrial development. The high human activity in this area will impact the quality of water in these surrounding areas and affect the fertility of the waters. The concentrations of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and total suspended matter (TSM) are major water quality parameters that can be retrieved using remotely sensed data. The retrieval satellite of the 3 OLCI chosen in this study has a 300 m spatial resolution. This study aimed to see the distribution and effect of total suspended matter (TSM) on chlorophyll-a based on measurement and retrieval of Sentinel 3 imagery using the linear regression method. The results show the chlorophyll-a distribution and the value from retrieval satellite are higher and occur over larger surface area compared to chlorophyll-a measurements. The linear regression model of chlorophyll-a by retrieval satellite imagery and measurement is y = 0.65x + 4.65 with R2 = 0.54. The presence of high amounts of suspended solids in the waters causes disturbances in the reflectance values, which are recorded by the retrieval of satellite. The model regression chlorophyll-a with TSM accuracy from retrieval satellite results in the equation y = -0.0416x + 5.14 (R2 = 0.45, p = 0.05, n = 13). The determination (R2) coefficient value is 0.445, which means that suspended solids have a 44.5% effect on chlorophyll-a and 55.5% is influenced by other factors and not examined in this study. The results show that TSM has an influence on the accuracy of chlorophyll-a and retrieval satellite recording can be disrupted if waters have high turbidity.

The studies on agricultural droughts require long-term atmospheric, hydrological and meteorological data. On the other hand, today, the possibilities of using spectral data in environmental studies are indicated. The development of remote sensing techniques, increasing the spectral and spatial resolution of data allows using remote sensing data in the study of water content in the environment. The paper presents the results of the analysis of moisture content of soil-plant environment in the lowland areas of river valley using the spectral data from Sentinel-2. The analyses were conducted between February and November 2016. The spectral data were used to calculate the Normalize Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI) which provided the information about the moisture content of the soil-plant environment. The analyses were performed only on grasslands, on 22 objects located in the research area in the Oder river valley between Malczyce and Brzeg Dolny, Poland. The NDVI values were correlated with the hydrological and meteorological parameters. The analyses showed spatial and temporal variability of the moisture conditions in the soil-plant environment showed by the NDVI variability and existence some relationships between the climatic and spectral indices characterizing the moisture content in the environment.

Opis:
Wymagają one jednak ustawicznej aktualizacji i tu w sukurs przychodzą zdjęcia wielospektralne, które mogą znacznie przyspieszyć i zautomatyzować proces aktualizacji bazy danych przestrzennych. Opracowano i przetestowano metodykę przetwarzania ortofotomapy i zdjęcia satelitarnego w celu ekstrakcji informacji o obiektach topograficznych reprezentujących roślinność oraz wody będącymi integralną częścią bazy danych „błękitnej i zielonej infrastruktury”. Przeprowadzone badania i analizy porównawcze wskazały na potencjał i ograniczenia obu źródeł danych teledetekcyjnych.
In recent years, the concept of green and blue infrastructure has been earning recognition and is increasingly being implemented in Polish cities and municipalities. It serves many important functions, ranging from recreational, ecological aspects to economic ones. This concept attaches particular attention to elements of the natural environment when making decisions regarding mainly spatial development, but also to aspects of its monitoring and management. To meet this task, it is necessary to refer to current spatial data. It is possible to successfully use existing spatial databases such as BDOT10k, Natura 2000 or other thematic created in city offices, e.g. in environmental protection offices. However, they require constant updating and here remote sensing data comes in, which speeds up the database update process. Depending on the needs and detail of the database, you can obtain data for this purpose from both the air and satellite altitude. The purpose of the research was to analyze the possibilities of using an aerial orthophotomap and a Sentinel-2 satellite image obtained for two different research areas. Test areas that were different in terms of land cover and local government units were selected for the experiments. It was an urban-rural commune with an agricultural landscape and the central district of a selected provincial city with a high urban index. The methodology of orthophotomap and satellite image processing and extraction of information about topographic objects related to vegetation and waters being an integral part of the „blue and green infrastructure” database was developed and tested. The conducted research and comparative analyzes indicated the potential and limitations of both sources of remote sensing data.

Opis:
The geodetic measurements optimization problem has played a crucial role in the mining areas affected by continuous ground movement. Such movements are most frequently measured with the classical geodetic methods such as levelling, tachymetry or GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System). The measuring techniques are selected with respect to the dynamics of the studied phenomena, surface hazard degree, as well as the financial potential of the mining company. Land surface changes caused by underground exploitation are observed with some delay because of the mining and geological conditions of the deposit surroundings. This delay may be considerable in the case of salt deposits extraction due to slow convergence process, which implies ground subsidence maximum up to a few centimeters per year. Measuring of such displacements requires high precision instruments and methods. In the case of intensely developed urban areas, a high density benchmark network has to be provided. Therefore, the best solution supporting the monitoring of vertical ground displacements in the areas located above the salt deposits seems to be the Sentinel 1-A radar imaging satellite system. The main goal of the investigation was to verify if imaging radar from the Sentinel 1 mission could be applied to monitor of slow ground vertical movement above word heritage Wieliczka salt mine. The outcome of the analysis, which was based on DInSAR (Differential SAR Interferometry). technology, is the surface distribution of annual subsidence in the period of 2015-2016. The comparison of the results with levelling confirmed the high accuracy of satellite observations. What is significant, the studies allowed to identify areas with the greatest dynamics of vertical ground movements, also in the regions where classical surveying was not conducted. The investigation proved that with the use of Sentinel-1 images sub centimeters slow vertical movements could be obtained.
Opóźnienie to wynika m.in. z warunków górniczo-geologicznych otoczenia złoża i jest zdecydowanie największe w przypadku prowadzenia wydobycia soli. Powolna konwergencja podziemnych wyrobisk powoduje osiadania powierzchni terenu dochodzące maksymalnie do kilku centymetrów rocznie.

Opis:
Monitoring water quality in large dams is becoming a necessity for protecting stored water from various forms of pollution. This process requires analysis of several samples on a weekly or monthly basis. Our study aims to determine the relationship between water quality parameters (WQP) and digital data from the Sentinel-2 satellite to estimate and map the WQP in the Bin El Ouidane Reservoir. The in situ sampling was carried out in the Bin El Ouidane Reservoir (Azilal Province), followed by analysis of physicochemical parameters in the laboratory. These measurement results were compared with the reflectance in each sampling location to investigate the correlations between bands and laboratory chemical analysis results. The correlation results showed that all studied parameters have an R2 greater than 0.52, and they can be transformed to predictive models by stepwise regression. The accuracy of our proposed models was tested using the Oum Er-Rbia Hydraulic Basin Agency data, and the results showed that only three parameters yield admissible verification results (Chlorophyll A, dissolved Oxygen and Nitrate). Those models were then used in geographic information system software to produce a thematic map of each parameter over the entire surface of the reservoir. As a conclusion, the Sentinel-2 images could help indicate the eutrophication stage in the Bin El Ouidane Reservoir, which is a major risk in major Moroccan reservoirs.

The possibility to use hyperspectral images (CHRIS/PROBA) and multispectral images (Sentinel-2) in the classification of forest communities is assessed in this article. The pre-processing of CHRIS/PROBA image included: noise reduction, radiometric correction, atmospheric correction, geometric correction. Due to MNF transformation the number of the hyperspectral image channels was reduced (to 10 channels) and smiling errors were removed. Sentinel-2 image (level 2A) did not require pre-processing. Three tree genera occurring in the study area were selected for the classification: pine (Pinus), alder (Alnus) and birch (Betula). Image classification was carried out with three methods: SAM (Spectral Angle Mapper ), MTMF (Mixture Tuned Matched Filtering), SVM (Support Vector Machine). For the CHRIS/PROBA image, the algorithm SVM turned out to be the best. Its overall accuracy (OA) was 72%. The poorest result (OA = 52%) was for the MTMF classifier. In the classification of Sentinel-2 multispectral image the best result was for the MTMF method: OA = 82%, kappa coefficient 0.7. For other methods, the overall accuracy exceeded 65%. Among the classified genera, the highest producer’s accuracy was obtained for pine (PA = 96%), and the broad-leaf genera: alder and birch had PA ranging from 42% to 85%.

The article presents surface deformations and changes in the Rudna mining areas, which occured between 28 November and 10 December 2016. These changes were recorded on the radar differential interferogram derived from the scenes of the ESA radar satellite Sentinel-1. The interferogram is a raster image that is a combination of two radar scenes, showing the phase difference of the reflected microwave signal. This difference reflects changes occurring on the earth surface in the form of interferometric stripes called “fringes”. They are interpreted as contours of changes in earth morphology. During the analyzed period, 3-cm variations were identified. All indications show that they were related to the November 29 seismic shock, which was confirmed by comparing the location of the earthquake epicentre with the recorded fringes.

The availability of Sentinel satellites for providing open data with optical and SAR imagery leads to better opportunities related to Earth surface mapping and monitoring. Recently, optical fusion with radar data has shown improvement in classification quality and the accuracy of information acquired. In this setting, the main objective of this research is to monitor the environmental impact of an open-pit mine on water, vegetation, and non-vegetation areas by exploring the single and combined use of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data. The data utilized in this paper were collected from the European Space Agency Copernicus program. After selecting the Selenica region, we explored the products in the Sentinel Application Platform. According to our data, Sentinel-2 misses the small water ponds but successfully identifies the river and open-pit areas. It mistakenly identifies urban structures and cloud areas as non-vegetated and does not identify non-vegetated areas which correspond to mining operation areas. Sentinel-1 identifies very small water ponds and delivers additional information in the cloudy areas, but misses a part of the river. Alongside the strong contribution in identifying the vegetation, it also roughly identifies the non-vegetation areas of mining operations.
