    The current analysis raises the issue of the syntactic relations typology in contemporary Russian. The two complementary directions in the morphosyntactic research are discussed, which are the reductionist and the expansionist approaches. Following the formal syntactic criterion, the author introduces and then analyses thoroughly the opposition of two syntactic linkings: connection and innection. Connection is defined as a syntactic linking based on the primary linear co-occurrence of lexemes (as syntactems), while innection includes the adjustment of one element to the other, according to the formal grammatical rules. The presented analysis is illustrated by the linguistic material from contemporary Russian.

    Business English speeches are an essential form of business communication, and the question of how to improve their effectiveness is essential to successful business communication. Based on a self-built corpus of Business English speeches, this paper studies the relationship of sentence structure, business vocabulary, and speech type with business speeches by using a quantitative statistical method. It reveals that the sentence structure used by the speaker changes according to the content and type of speech, while the proportion of business vocabulary relative to the type of business speech stays at a low level of 5%, with little variance. Sentence structure and the frequency of business vocabulary should be adapted according to the type of speech so that positive effectiveness can be ensured.
    Przemówienia biznesowe w języku angielskim są podstawową formą komunikacji biznesowej, a pytanie o to, jak poprawić ich efektywność, jest kluczowe dla udanej komunikacji biznesowej. Na podstawie samodzielnie zbudowanego korpusu przemówień biznesowych w języku angielskim badany jest związek struktury zdań, słownictwa biznesowego i typu wypowiedzi z przemówieniami biznesowymi z zastosowaniem statystycznej metody ilościowej. Okazuje się, że struktura zdania używana przez mówiącego zmienia się w zależności od treści i typu wypowiedzi, podczas gdy udział słownictwa biznesowego w stosunku do typu wypowiedzi biznesowej pozostaje na niskim, 5 procentowym poziomie, z niewielkimi odchyleniami. Struktura zdania i częstość użycia słownictwa biznesowego powinny być dostosowane do rodzaju wypowiedzi, aby zapewnić jej skuteczność.

    The paper examines the relationship between the abstractly understood Thematic-Rhematic Structure (TRS) of utterances, a theoretical approach initiated by Bogusławski (1977), and the "online" processing and interpretation of utterances in real time by the hearer. Focusin on three Polish examples, we propose a more dynamic approach to TRS based on ideas from Relevance Theory (Sperber and Wilson 1995), and redefine the notions "theme" and "rheme" in dynamic terms, from hearer's perspective. We present a formalis for modeling how the multi-level nature of TRS emerges out of real-time processing mechanisms: different theme-rheme divisions may arise at different (earlier or later) stages of processing. A main claim is that presuppositional and stylistic effects related to the flexibility of sentence stress position and word order in Polish can be explained well in such a dynamic model. On the sub-utterance level, both stress position and word order ("exponents" of TSR) serve to guide the hearer's investment of effort into positing and verifying hypotheses about the explicit and implicit content of the utterance as a whole, while processing by the hearer is still underway.

    Der Beitrag handelt von den Verbstellungsbesonderheiten im Jiddischen und ihren Auswirkungen auf die interne Struktur der INFL-Phrase. Man beobachtet Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede in der syntaktischen Positionierung des Verbkomplexes im jiddischen Satz im Vergleich zum Deutschen und zum Polnischen. Das Jiddische wird als eine V2-Sprache klassifiziert, aber die Grundwortstellung im Nebensatz weist eine SVO-Reihenfolge auf und die einzelnen Teile des Verbs können voneinander getrennt werden. Die widersprüchlichen Annahmen in der typologischen Einordnung des Jiddischen können zur unterschiedlichen Gliederung der internen IP-Struktur des Jiddischen führen. Diese wird im Beitrag einer gründlichen Analyse unterzogen. Die Untersuchung erfolgt im Rahmen der generativen Grammatik. Relevant sind hier die Regeln der Prinzipien- und Parameter-Theorie (Chomsky 1981) sowie des Minimalistischen Programms (Chomsky 1995). Es wird von der Annahme ausgegangen, dass die nachweisbaren systematischen Distributionsunterschiede der Verben auf die Existenz eines generellen Bewegungsprozesses zurückzuführen sind.
    The aim of the paper is to determine the structure of the INFL phrase in the Yiddish language sentence within the Principles and Parameters framework as well as the Minimalist Program, both formulated by Noam Chomsky. The article contains a syntactic analysis of the Yiddish language sentence in relation to the Polish and the German language with the focus on the verb and its position in the sentence. The aim of the analysis is to find features similar with these of the INFL phrase in the Polish and the German language, as well as parametrical features typical for the Yiddish language. In the syntax of Yiddish the verb in the main sentence has the V 2 feature. It can also take the sentence-initial position. In contrast to the German language the subordinate sentence in Yiddish is developed symmetrically with respect to the main sentence. On the basis of sentence examples taken from selected languages and their analysis conclusions are drawn as to the INFL phrase structure in the Yiddish language.
    Artykuł skupia uwagę na określeniu struktury frazy INFL w zdaniu języka jidysz w ujęciu Teorii Zasad i Parametrów oraz Programu Minimalistycznego Noama Chomsky’go. W artykule przeprowadzono analizę składniową zdań w języku jidysz w odniesieniu do języka polskiego i niemieckiego pod kątem czasownika i zajmowanej przez niego pozycji w zdaniu. Celem analizy jest znalezienie cech zbieżnych z frazą INFL dla języka polskiego i niemieckiego oraz cech parametrycznych, jakie wykazuje język jidysz. W składni jidysz czasownik w zdaniu głównym wykazuje cechę V 2. Może on również zajmować pozycję inicjalną. W odróżnieniu od języka niemieckiego w składni jidysz zdanie podrzędne rozwijane jest symetrycznie do zdania głównego. W oparciu o przykłady zdań zaczerpnięte z wybranych języków oraz ich analizy wysunięto wnioski odnośnie układu frazy INFL języka jidysz.

    This study is designed to investigate the qualitative features of the stories produced by children, adults and older people with a special focus on sentence structures, the emergence of story units, Mean Length of Utterance (henceforward MLU) and evaluative language. Participants are 60 children from 3 to 5-year-olds, 60 adults from 20 to 30-year-olds and 60 older people who are 60 and over. Data were collected by using Mercer Meyer’s (1969) textless picture book, Frog, where are you?, which depicts the events that take place while a boy and a dog are in search of a missing frog in countryside.Results showed that there are significant differences in the qualitative features of the sentence structure produced by children and other two groups in the usage of connectives. Although adults and the older participants show similar features in the emergence and quality of story units as they are defined by Labov and Waletzky (1967), the narratives produced by children render significant differences both quantitatively and qualitatively. Regarding MLU, as they are in other narrative components, children are different from the other two groups. The mean length of sentences in adults’ stories is longer than in those of children and olds and the sentences produced by adults are more complex than those of both olds and children. All of the three groups use evaluative language in their narratives. However, the amount and quality of the evaluative language differs from the evaluative utterances adults and older participants produce.

    The article presents a comprehensive multifaceted description of interrogative sentences in terms of the interaction of their semantic-syntactic (syntaxeme) and formal-grammatical articulation with their communicative articulation (relevant). The syntaxeme structure of interrogative sentences is determined according to the communicative intentions of the speaker. In particular, the following substantial syntaxemes, which serve as a means of modelling questions, are outlined: 1) the indefinite-interrogative subject of an action (physical, locative, intellectual, verbal); 2) the indefinite-interrogative subject of a state (physical, psycho-emotional, intellectual, locative, emotional-evaluative attitude, possessive); 3) the indefinite-interrogative subject of qualification feature, identification; 4) the indefinite-interrogative subject of a qualitative feature; 5) the indefinite-interrogative subject of a process; 6) the indefinite-interrogative object of an action (physical, intellectual-mental, verbal, perceptual); 7) the indefinite-interrogative object of a state (desire, intellectual); 8) the indefinite-interrogative object of a process (physical, psycho-emotional); 9) the indefinite-interrogative object of a qualitative feature; 10) the indefinite-interrogative addressee of an action or state; 11) the indefinite-interrogative means or instrument of an action; 12) the indefinite-interrogative locative. All of these syntaxemes replace the positions of controlled subordinate parts in the formal-syntactic structure of a simple sentence. The emphasis is placed on interrogative words in the field of adverbial syntaxemes, in particular time, reasons, purposes, conditions, manner, and sources of information, which at the formal-syntactic level remain in the position of determinants — subordinate parts of the sentence. The specifics of the thematic-rhematic articulation of interrogative utterances and their communicative variants are examined. It is found that the communicative intention of the speaker’s request determines the intonation type of the question (full dictal, partial dictal, full modal, partial modal), and the syntaxeme and formal structure of the interrogative sentence. The communicative intention also determines the semantic, morphological and positional variants of the interrogative marker. It is observed that interrogative words are usually positioned at the beginning of the sentence and form the rheme of the sentence.
    Autorzy dokonują kompleksowego i wieloaspektowego opisu zdań interrogatywnych w planie interakcji ich wymowy semantyczno-syntaktycznej (syntaksemowej) i formalno-gramatycznej z ich wymową komunikacyjną (relewantną). Struktura syntaksemowa zdań interrogatywnych jest określana w zależności od intencji komunikacyjnej mówiącego. W szczególności zarysowują się następujące istotne syntaksemy, które służą do modelowania pytań: 1) nieokreślony-interrogatywny podmiot czynności (fizyczny, lokatywny, intelektualny, werbalny); 2) nieokreślony-interrogatywny podmiot stanu (fizyczny, psycho-emocjonalny, intelektualny, lokatywny, stosunek emocjonalno-oceniający, zaborczy); 3) nieokreślony-interrogatywny podmiot cechy kwalifikacyjnej, identyfikacyjnej; 4) nieokreślony-interrogatywny podmiot cechy jakościowej; 5) nieokreślony-interrogatywny podmiot procesu; 6)  nieokreślony-interrogatywny przedmiot czynności (fizycznej, intelektualno-mentalnej, werbalnej, percepcyjnej); 7) nieokreślony-interrogatywny przedmiot stanu (pożądanego, intelektualnego); 8) nieokreślony-interrogatywny przedmiot procesu (fizycznego, psychiczno-emocjonalnego); 9) nieokreślony-interrogatywny przedmiot cechy jakościowej; 10) nieokreślony-interrogatywny adresat czynności lub stanu; 11) nieokreślony-interrogatywny środek lub narzędzie czynności; 12) nieokreślony-interrogatywny miejscownik. Wszystkie te syntaksemy zastępują pozycje członów podrzędnych w strukturze formalno-syntaktycznej zdania prostego. W zakresie składni przysłówkowej nacisk położony jest na wyrazy pytające, w szczególności o czas, przyczyny, cele, warunki, sposób i źródła informacji, które na poziomie formalnosyntaktycznym pozostają w pozycji determinantów — części podrzędnych zdania. Badana jest specyfika artykulacji tematyczno-rematycznej wypowiedzi interrogatywnych i ich wariantów komunikacyjnych. Stwierdza się, że intencja komunikacyjna prośby mówiącego decyduje o typie intonacyjnym pytania oraz o strukturze składniowej i formalnej zdania pytającego. Intencja komunikacyjna determinuje również warianty semantyczne, morfologiczne i pozycyjne znacznika interrogatywnego. Stwierdza się, że wyrazy interrogatywne są zwykle umieszczane na początku zdania i tworzą jego remat.

    The article presents a stylistic analysis of legal language by combining moral issues with the logical use of linguistic signs – text, sentences and words. Particular emphasis was placed on the prescriptive nature of the preamble and on the logical structure of a sentence in legal language. The article also reflects human reflection on the beauty of the text, which is based on observation of the world and results from the need to arrange it according to cherished values. In this systemic harmony of content and form, there is the moral aspect of creating legislative texts in order to ensure security and just rights for society, as well as their functional beauty. The article presents numerous examples of the relationship between the morality and beauty of legal language through the prism of the content of legal acts.

    The aim of this paper is to illustrate through two sentences how foreign learners perceive the structure of the Czech language. Respondents were asked to write answers on how the language works, what the syntactic relations of the sentence members are, and why the chosen words have their concrete forms with respect to the whole clause. The survey collected answers of a wide range of respondents with respect to both the number of years of studying the Czech language and their native language. After a brief introduction to the Czech language focusing mainly on the syntactic and morphological properties that were at the center of attention in this survey, the chosen survey questions are analyzed. It turned out that learners of the Czech language were willing to participate in this survey; in total the respondents provided answers in 95.7 % of cases, which helped to get more exact results. It emerged that respondents of the survey fully answered the questions correctly in 52.7 % of cases. The remaining 47.3 % of responses were either wrong or incomplete depending on the form of the question. The results of this survey lead us to the conclusion that it might be worth focusing more on the system of morphology and syntax while teaching Czech for foreigners. The complete list of answers with respect to the number of years of studying the Czech language is attached in the appendix.

    About meanings as a rule not included in dictionariesThe article discusses the problem of ambiguity of the exponents of logical existential quantification occurring in the verbal group of Bulgarian, Polish and Russian sentences: Bulg. отвреме навреме, понякога, Pol. od czasu do czasu, czasem, czasami, Rus. время от времени, иногда. This ambiguity can be explained by strong and weak existential quantification. Lexical semantics did not distinguish between these two types of existentiality. Here we present a description of selected exponents of logical existential quantification in Bulgarian, Polish and Russian.

    The article focuses on the relationship between predicate‑argument (semantic) structure of verbs and their syntactic properties. This investigation concentrates on the semantic structure of the Polish verb rozmyślić się (‘to change one’s mind’) as a predicate of higer order (Px, q) and its syntactic characteristic. The analisys demonstrates that the content of the propositional argument q is expressed mainly in the context of the sentence and this fact makes the verb rozmyślić się an exceptional unit of the higer order preditcate set. The verb rozmyślić się is compared with the Polish and Bulgarian possible equivalents: zrezygnować and откажа се.

    Light verbs are generally considered on semantic grounds: Light verbs are contrasted with predicative verbs because the former lack argument structure. In this paper, I argue that light verbs should rather be considered on syntactic grounds, i.e., in terms of the structure of the sentence. From this point of view, light verbs highlight the central property of verbs tout court: namely, to construct a VP. In § 1, I argue that only on this basis can light and predicative verbs be consistently contrasted. In §§ 2 and 3, I address the question of the structure of a VP with a light verb. In § 4, I address the question of the relationship between argument structure and semantic richness.

    In the article I consider the problem of sentence stress and its influence on the semantics of the adverbs modifying information on the intentionality of actions, i.e. expressions such as niechcący 'unwillingly', nieświadomie 'unconsciously', przypadkiem 'accidentally', celowo 'on purpose', specjalnie 'intentionally' etc., with special attention paid to the two expressions from this class -niechcący and przypadkiem. I try to demonstrate how their interpretation may differ according to the position they take in the sentence structure. I assume that these units of language - as they are adverbs - belong primarily to the dictum of the sentence, which means that one should take the rhematic position as basic in the explication; all the differences that result from moving them to the thematic dictum should be then intepreted as secondary (as the effect of thematizing).

    Opis:
    Istnieje błędny pogląd, że mózg może pokonać przepaść między mówcą a słuchaczem poprzez rozwój konceptualnej struktury, którą można odtworzyć jako łańcuch fonetyczny. Okazuje się, że należy pokonać co najmniej osiem warstw opracowania informacji, aby móc zdefiniować zdanie czy wyrażenie. Niektóre z tych warstw postrzega się niesłusznie jako usytuowane poza procesem mowy. Podczas opracowania i strukturyzacji wypowiedzi językowych, takich jak „Janie, czy możesz mi, proszę, podać masło”, mózg funkcjonuje na następujących płaszczyznach: 1) struktura ramowa, 2) orientacja, 3) kontakt osobisty, 4) wizualizacja, 5) konceptualizacja, 6) przesłanie, 7) werbalizacja, 8) realizacja. Zwroty językowe jak zdania czy teksty rozwijają się więc w mózgu na podstawie ścisłej współpracy między sferą kognitywną a komunikatywną.
