Opis:
Magnetic microwires have been rediscovered due to a number of the unusual magnetic properties and their potential applications. The paper concerns glass-coated magnetic microwires composed of a ferromagnetic metallic core with a diameter of 0.6 – 30 μm and of a glass coat with a thickness of 2 – 20 μm. The fabrication process and magnetic properties of these microwires are described. Due to their unique properties microwires can be used as a sensing element of sensors. Microwire-based sensors can be used in a wide range of aviation applications as magnetic field sensors, tensile stress sensors or temperature sensors. The main advantages of microwire-based sensors are associated with their small dimensions and weight, which play a very important role in aviation.

The paper presents the results of investigations on the resistive structure with a graphene oxide (GO) sensing layer. The effects of dangerous gases (hydrogen and nitrogen dioxide) on the structure were studied; the resistance changes were examined during the flow of the selected gas in the atmosphere of synthetic air. Measurements were performed with a special emphasis on the detection of low concentrations of the analyzed gases. The reactions of the sensing structure to the effect of nitrogen and synthetic air at different humidity were also tested. Much attention was also paid to the fast response of the sensor to the changes in the gas atmosphere. The thin palladium layer (~2 nm) has been applied in order to improve the sensing properties of the structure. The investigations were performed in the temperature range from RT to 120°C and the analyzed gases in synthetic air were batched alternately with pure synthetic air.

W referacie przedstawiono dwustanowe czujniki temperatury bazujące na przełącznikach optycznych (światłowodowych) pracujących jako pojedyncze układy pomiarowe lub stanowiące elementy całkowicie optycznych magistrali kontrolno-monitorujących. Sprecyzowano warunki pracy przełącznika światłowodowego (optycznego) dla wersji "ON"-"OFF" i możliwości sprzęgania go z tradycyjnym czujnikiem temperatury (dwustanowym elementem pomiarowym). Podano przykłady czujników temperatury w oparciu o mechaniczne przełączniki temperatury ("migowe" czujniki bimetalowe) oraz wytyczne i wstępne wymagania dla konstrukcji tak utworzonych czujników dwustanowych (hybrydowych) z wyjściowym sygnałem optycznym.
Single fiber optic sensors use various forms of interaction of a measured variable with optical beam guided by fiber optic cable: attenuation, polarization, interference etc.; usually demanding expensive information processing unit. Therefore there is a tendency to group single sensors into simplified networks with distributed binary sensors, even if it occurs at the cost of limited accuracy. This paper presents binary temperature sensors based on optical (optical fiber) switches working either as single measurement system or as a part of entirely optical measuring-controlling buses. We specify operating conditions for optical fiber switch in "ON" and "OFF" versions and possibilities of connecting it with conventional temperature sensor (two-state measuring element). Moreover we present some examples of temperature sensors based on mechanical switches (bimetallic sensors) and present guidelines and conditions for construction of this kind of sensors with optical output signal. Some constructional solutions of sensors with optical switches may offer innovative approach to implementation of logical sensors' network optical output. They may be implemented as a detection systems for over threshold signaling especially in difficult and dangerous environment. Summarizing they allow the connection of extended measuring and controlling networks which provide information about state and conditions of devices and their work conditions.

Determining the dependence of phase difference modulations between light pulses in a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer was used to develop an optical system coding the information and working as an eavesdropping sensor for an optical fibre information exchange system. The basic challenge in the system development is to maintain stable operation in changing environmental conditions, as well as to ensure optimal parameters of the phase modulator. The system was tested for various many-kilometer long transmission lines of single-mode fibres. The research was focused on achieving the normative Bit Error Rate for the system in the 100 Mbit/s range (STM-1). Such a system can be used in commercial applications for the code key secure transmission in the physical layer of the link.

The paper presents the experimental results of the investigations of optical fibre current sensors with an external transformation. The head of the sensor is made of the glass which has a high value of the Verdet constant. The sensor was built on the glass bar (with high value of the Verdet coefficient), polarisers, plastic optical fibres, a light source and a detector module. The paper deals with magnetic field measurements of two types of electrical current conductors: a typical conductor with circular cross-section and a busduct. Output signals from the optical current sensor were displayed on the digital oscilloscope and memorized in ěComp for a further analysis. This type of sensor was investigated on a laboratory stand and on an electrical power line which included conductor where the high intensity electric current flow. The constructed optoelectronic current sensor was tested for detection of current with intensity of the order of 200 A, with an accuracy of a few percent. Practically, the upper border of the current detection by means of this sensor is much higher.

Of late, the science of Remote Sensing has been gaining a lot of interest and attention due to its wide variety of applications. Remotely sensed data can be used in various fields such as medicine, agriculture, engineering, weather forecasting, military tactics, disaster management etc. only to name a few. This article presents a study of the two categories of sensors namely optical and microwave which are used for remotely sensing the occurrence of disasters such as earthquakes, floods, landslides, avalanches, tropical cyclones and suspicious movements. The remotely sensed data acquired either through satellites or through ground based-synthetic aperture radar systems could be used to avert or mitigate a disaster or to perform a post-disaster analysis.

Opis:
Detection of explosives vapors is an extremely difficult task. The sensitivity of currently constructed detectors is often insufficient. The paper presents a description of an explosive vapors concentrator that improves the detection limit of some explosives detectors. These detector s have been developed at the Institute of Optoelectronics. The concentrator is especially dedicated to operate with nitrogen oxide detectors. Preliminary measurements show that using the concentrator, the recorded amount of nitrogen dioxide released from a 0.5 ng sample of TNT increases by a factor of approx. 20. In the concentrator an induction heater is applied. Thanks to this and because of the miniaturization of the container with an adsorbing material (approx. 1 cm3), an extremely high rate of tempera ture growth is achieved (up to 500°C within approx. 25 s). The concentration process is controlled by a microcontroller. Compact construction and battery power supply provide a possibility of using the concentrator as a portable device.

Opis:
Ensuring optimal coverage is a central objective of every sensor deployment plan. Effective monitoring of the environment helps to minimize manpower and time, while enhancing surveillance capability. In this paper, a solution for improved area coverage was presented. A lattice of a pre-defined parameter has been used as an input for the algorithm. For the purpose of the research the blanket deployment strategy has been adopted. Then, a genetic algorithm has been proposed and implemented to find an optimal solution. The proposed approach has been tested and the conclusions have been drawn. The results proved that the proposed genetic algorithm could already provide satisfactory results, usually finding only suboptimal solutions.

This paper focuses on viable position estimation schemes for timing belt drives where the position of the carriage (load) is to be calculated via reference models accepting input from a position sensor on the actuator of the timing belt. A detailied analysis on the source of transmission errors is presented a number of relevant mathematical modeis are developed utilizing a priori knowledge on the process. The paper illustrates that such schemes are very effective when the drive system is not subjected to external loads es well as widely changing operating conditions such as ambient temperature, belt tension.

Polymer-based capacitive humidity sensors emerged around 40 years ago; nevertheless, they currently constitute large part of sensors’ market within a range of medium (climatic and industrial) humidity 20-80%RH due to their linearity, stability and cost-effectiveness. However, for low humidity values (0-20%RH) that type of sensor exhibits increasingly nonlinear characteristics with decreasing of humidity values. This paper presents the results of some experimental trials of CMOS polymer-based capacitive humidity sensors, as well as of modelling the behaviour of that type of sensor. A logarithmic functional relationship between the relative humidity and the change of sensor output value at low humidity is suggested.

LTCC-based pressure sensors are promising candidates for wet-wet applications in which the effect of the surrounding media on the sensor's characteristics is of key importance. The effect of humidity on the sensor's stability can be a problem, particularly in the case of capacitive sensors. A differential mode of operation can be a good solution, but manufacturing the appropriate sensing capacitors remains a major challenge. In the case of piezoresistive sensors the influence of humidity is less critical, but it still should be considered as an important parameter when designing sensors for low-pressure ranges. In this paper we discuss the stability of the sensors' offset characteristics, which was inspected closely using experimental and numerical analyses.

Considering the continued drive of human needs along with the constant improvement of technology, it is convenient to develop techniques that can enhance communication between computers and humans in the most intuitive ways possible. The possibility of automatically recognizing human gestures using artificial vision (among other kinds of sensors) allows us to explore a whole range of applications to control and interact with environments. Nowadays, most approaches for gesture recognition using sensors agree in the use of vision, myography, and movement devices that are applied to robotic, medical, and industrial applications. In the context of this work, we study the principles of using both vision and body contact sensing applied to the automatic classification of a human gesture set. For this, two different approaches have been evaluated: feed-forward neural networks, and hidden Markov models. These models have been studied and implemented for recognizing up to eight different human hand gestures that are commonly applied in collaborative robotics tasks.

In the paper new, interval models of IR proximity sensors are presented. The dependence between distance and signal from sensor is described with the use of exponential function and two parameter Mittag-Leffler function with interval parameters. Identification method for was also proposed. Results of experiments show, that two parameter Mittag-Leffler function most accurate describes a behaviour of proximity IR sensor, than exponential function.

Patients are suffering from physical and mental activities called co-morbidities. We have to give treatments for co-morbid patients while in home or in hospital. The patient should be monitored by caregivers. Caregivers can’t predict the accurate timing and the exact change of the optimal result of the patient. In this case, we have to use sensor to monitor the patient activities without manual support. By using eye blink sensor, motion sensor and temperature sensor to check the level of patient and it will be displayed in LCD. If some abnormalities occur, we have to give alarm by using buzzer to caregiver, doctor or family members. We have to use ZigBee, for storing the patient details in the hospital management. It is useful to check the patient report with secure level in the database.

Due to significant advancements in optical navigation technology, optical mouse sensors (OMS) are increasingly employed as low-cost motion sensora in personal computing and robot navigation. This paper proposes a new test bed to study the long-term measurement characteristics of emerging OMS devices. With the utilization of this set-up, the attributes of a high-resolution OMS (Agilent ADNS-2051) are investigated under various critical operating conditions like changing surface velocity and the pattern. The paper illustrates that despite the problems addressed, the positioning accuracy of an OMS could be quite sufficient for some basic process control apptications.

The paper presents the possibilities of using low-cost magnetic and acceleration sensors in diagnostic systems of large-scale structures made of ferromagnetic materials. It covers typical problems associated with their use as well as the review of commercially available low-cost solutions. A specially designed magnetic sensor equipped with a CAN interface, which allows for connecting a number of transmitters into a measuring network, were tested during the experiment.
W pracy przedstawiono możliwość wykorzystania niskobudżetowych czujników pola magnetycznego i przyspieszeń w systemach diagnostyki konstrukcji wielkogabarytowych wykonanych z materiałów ferromagnetycznych. Przedstawiono typowe problemy występujące podczas ich użycia oraz dokonano przeglądu dostępnych na rynku tanich rozwiązań. W przeprowadzonym eksperymencie przetestowano specjalnie opracowane przetworniki pala magnetycznego wyposażone w interfejs CAN pozwalający nasączenie sieć pomiarową.

Opis:
Optical chemical sensors enlarge the definition of a classical chemical sensor; they present results in two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) aspect. They can determine parameters of micro and macro scale objects without using a lot of electronic equipment. This article is focused on sensors based on porphyrin derivatives and europium complexes, being the most frequently used substances sensitive to oxygen concentration, pressure and temperature changes. Along with the presentation of characteristics of substances employed to sensors’ construction, also the general principle of luminescent sensors operation, composition and operation range of selected mono- and bifunctional luminescent sensors are described; moreover the selected achievements, such as the “traffic light” sensor are shown.

W artykule odniesiono się do sposobu zasilania czujników używanych do monitorowania inteligentnych maszyn i budynków. Omówiono coraz częściej stosowane czujniki z „autozasilaniem”, które wykorzystują do zasilania swoich struktur energię wygenerowaną podczas zjawisk fizycznych, takich jak: przepływ ciepła, drgania lub promieniowanie słoneczne (ang. energy harvesting – pozyskiwanie energii). Przedstawiono możliwości wdrożenia systemu czujników samozasilających się w odniesieniu do maszyn stosowanych w przestrzeniach zagrożonych wybuchem metanu i/lub pyłu węglowego, w tym w systemach automatyki oraz diagnostyki maszyn i urządzeń górniczych.
The articles refers to the method of power supply to sensors for monitoring intelligent machines and buildings. Self-powered sensors, which are used more and more frequently these days, were discussed. These sensors make use of energy harvesting, particularly energy generated from such physical phenomena as: heat flow, vibrations or light. The authors presented how to implement a system of self-powered sensors in machines operating in mining areas with methane and/or coal dust explosion hazards – including automation systems and systems for diagnosing mining machines and equipment.

Przedstawiono koncepcję sensorów rozciągania i kondycjonowania w zmiennych temperatury wykonanych z polimerów barwionych barwnikiem luminescencyjnym o strukturze stlibenu (4,4'-Bis(2-benzoxazolyl) stilben). Dla sensorów rozciągania wyznaczono eksperymentalnie warunki odnoszące się do parametrów wymiarowych, jakie muszą być spełnione, aby paski sensorów mogły stanowić element detekcyjny. Dla sensorów kondycjonowania określono zakres temperatur, przy którym możliwa jest wzrokowa identyfikacja zmian barwy sensora oświetlonego promieniowaniem nadfioletowym.
The conception of stretch sensors made of polyethylene with luminescence dye with stliben structure (4,4-Bis(2-benzoxazolyl)stilben) is presented in the paper. The sensor models are made as stripes which are mounted to the so called basic material for which the stretch process or the temperature change process is monitored. As a result of external forces on the basic material (stretching) or temperature changes there are irreversible changes in the structure of an integrated with it sensor as a dyed polymer belt/stripe. It also causes change in the spectrum of visible radiation emitted as a result of lighting the dye polymer with ultraviolet radiation. Potential use of the designed stretch polymer sensors are elements of personal protective equipment for which, as a result of external factors, there are irreversible changes that cause reduction or total loss of the required protective properties. That element of equipment that protects against fall from height (stretch sensor) or protective clothes (temperature sensor) should be classified to this group. For stretch sensors the methods of mounting dyed polymer stripes to the basic material (which is stretched) were determined. As a result of the performed research there were determined the experimental conditions concerning the dimensional parameters which should be met to use dyed polymer stripes as one of the detect elements for stretch processes in a basic material. For storage sensors the range of temperature changes, recognizable during visual inspection, was determined.

In this paper, the authors analyse the propagation of surface Love waves in an elastic layered waveguide (elastic guiding layer deposited on an elastic substrate) covered on its surface with a Newtonian liquid layer of finite thickness. By solving the equations of motion in the constituent regions (elastic substrate, elastic surface layer and Newtonian liquid) and imposing the appropriate boundary conditions, the authors established an analytical form of the complex dispersion equation for Love surface waves. Further, decomposition of the complex dispersion equation into its real and imaginary part, enabled for evaluation of the phase velocity and attenuation dispersion curves of the Love wave. Subsequently, the influence of the finite thickness of a Newtonian liquid on the dispersion curves was evaluated. Theoretical (numerical) analysis shows that when the thickness of the Newtonian liquid layer exceeds approximately four penetration depths 4δ of the wave in a Newtonian liquid, then this Newtonian liquid layer can be regarded as a semi-infinite half-space. The results obtained in this paper can be important in the design and optimization of ultrasonic Love wave sensors such as: biosensors, chemosensors and viscosity sensors. Love wave viscosity sensors can be used to assess the viscosity of various liquids, e.g. liquid polymers.

Thermo-optic properties enhancement of the bi-stable temperature threshold sensors based on a partially filled photonic crystal fiber was reported. Previously tested transducers filled with a selected group of pure n-alkanes had in most cases differences between switching ON and OFF states. Therefore, the modification of filling material by using additional crystallization centers in the form of gold nanoparticles was applied to minimize this undesirable effect. The evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of pentadecane and its mixtures with 14 nm spherical Au nanoparticles based on the differential scanning calorimetry measurements was presented. Optical properties analysis of sensors prepared with these mixtures has shown that they are bounded with refractive index changes of the filling material. Particular sensor switches ON before melting process begins and switches OFF before crystallization starts. Admixing next group of n-alkanes with these nanoparticles allows to design six sensors transducers which change ON and OFF states at the same temperature. Thus, the transducers with a wider temperature range for fiber-optic multi-threshold temperature sensor tests will be used.

When a frequency domain sensor is under the effect of an input stimulus, there is a frequency shift at its output. One of the most important advantages of such sensors is their converting a physical input parameter into time variations. In consequence, changes of an input stimulus can be quantified very precisely, provided that a proper frequency counter/meter is used. Unfortunately, it is well known in the time-frequency metrology that if a higher accuracy in measurements is needed, a longer time for measuring is required. The principle of rational approximations is a method to measure a signal frequency. One of its main properties is that the time required for measuring decreases when the order of an unknown frequency increases. In particular, this work shows a new measurement technique, which is devoted to measuring the frequency shifts that occur in frequency domain sensors. The presented research result is a modification of the principle of rational approximations. In this work a mathematical analysis is presented, and the theory of this new measurement method is analysed in detail. As a result, a new formalism for frequency measurement is proposed, which improves resolution and reduces the measurement time.

Paper presents application of magnetovision in weak magnetic fields for public security systems. Measurement system was developed to study the magnetic field vector distributions. The measurements of the Earth’s field disturbances caused by ferromagnetic objects were carried out. The ability for passive detection of selected dangerous objects and determine their location was demonstrated.

The paper presents experimental setup for testing of the three axis magnetoresisitive magnetometers for measurements of the magnetic field within the range of Earth's magnetic field. Measuring setup integrates three axis Helmholtz coils controlled by the specialized current source. The accuracy of magnetic field generated by the Helmholtz coils is up to 0.6% for the one direction. Presented experimental setup can be also applied for investigation and calibration of the other magnetometers utilizing magnetoresistive, Hall or fluxgate sensors.
