The article discusses new and republished translations of Susan Sontag’s work, recently launched by the Karakter publishing house: Regarding the Pan of Others, On Photography, and Against Interpretation and Other Essays. The article focuses on the elements of Sontag’s thought that make her a forgotten mother of feminist and gender theoreticians, as well as such influential critics as Michel Foucault and Roland Barthes. The article points out to continuations of Sontag’s thought in contemporary theoretical and social projects, and to the pertinence of her critical observations on theories based on metaphysics of presence: psychoanalysis, Marxism, or hermeneutics. The article also touches upon history of war photography and related war journalism, and upon the ambivalent quality of imaging of the misery of war. It also present historical and cultural circumstances of the development of Sontag’s thought in the intellectual milieu of New York in the 1960s. The discussion recapitulates the main statements of Sontag’s essays, relating them to a wider theoretical context, which is aimed at a reappraisal of the forgotten intelectual in the history of literature.

The main inspiration for the article dedicated to aesthetics of picturesqueness in Jane Austen’s novels is W. J. T. Mitchell’s Introduction in Landscape and Power, where he defines a landscape not as a noun, but as a verb. In this context, this term becomes a cultural medium, by which the new political and social meanings of the epoch are transmitted and sanctioned. Selected parts of Austen’s works, in which long descriptions of nature have been replaced by dialogues about a landscape as an artistic, picturesque object, will allow to describe the consequences of the reconceptualization of the nature within English theory of aesthetics.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki laboratoryjnych badań ściśliwości gruntów pylastych. Do badań wytypowano próbę gruntu pylastego z rejonu Wrocławia. Grunty pylaste stwarzają szereg problemów w geoinżynierii. Struktura tych gruntów charakteryzuje się dużą wrażliwością na zmiany wilgotności, co powoduje szybkie zmiany właściwości inżynierskich wraz z przejściem ze stanu nienasyconego do nasyconego wodą. W artykule oceniono wrażliwość struktury gruntów pylastych na zmiany wilgotności poprzez porównanie charakterystyk ściśliwości prób gruntów pylastych o naturalnej strukturze, początkowo nasyconych jak i nienasyconych wodą z charakterystykami otrzymanymi z prób gruntów preparowanych w laboratorium.
The results of laboratory examinations, of silty soil compressibility were presented. The soil sample have been taken from Wrocław area. Silty soil are creating a number of problems in geoengineering. The soil structure is characterized by a great sensitivity to changes water content what causes fast changes of engineering properties caused among others with change of the state from the unsaturated to saturated. In the paper a silty soil structure sensitivity was examined for the water content changes. The assessment were done by comparing of the oedometer curve get from test of soil about the natural structure, at first saturated as well as unsaturated with water, with oedometer curve gets from soil sample about the structure prepared in laboratory.

In §§ 50-51 of his Pensées sur l’interprétation de la Nature, Diderot draws consequences adverse to religion from the hypothesis of the sensibility of living matter in the Système de la Nature, prompting an endangered Maupertuis to respond. Diderot knows that he is reading his own materialistic conception of matter in Maupertuis but is feigning to object to it, while Maupertuis, who knows that the so-called objection is in truth Diderot’s own view, is compelled to defend himself. Through this rhetoric of feigned misunderstanding, real and fundamental questions (living matter, continuity, totality, unity of natural philosophy) raised by the phenomena of organization are being discussed.

The essay critically approaches the current state and directions of changes in the university education. We see the critical point in the unconditioned endorsement by the university of the market values of intense competitiveness of global economy and the cult of the pro-market education which is its inevitable result. We would like to argue that although the university must respect economic conditions and limitations, nevertheless we fear that the ongoing process of corporatization of the university with its management strategies such as cutting costs, scanning environments for competitive purposes, re-engineering highly competitive efficiency criteria for the staff will bring about a neglect of the humanist values rooted in intellectual and social sensibility and hence undermine the social mission of the university which, apart from professional skills and research, must cultivate intellectual pluralism by providing space for intelligent conversation, sharing critical views of the present state of things thus fostering social criticism and the spirit of responsible dissent.

In this conceptual article we present a modular model of holistic education. Within this approach, an educational activity (and a child’s learning that derives from it) can be characterized in three dimensions: 1) safety, inclusion and participation; 2) interaction, cognition and representation; and 3) affective action leading to imagination and creativity. A holistic approach nurturing the full cognitive development of a child requires going beyond what a conventional school offers, but still presumes designed but liberating processes. We provide a neurobiological argument for holistic education supported by evidence for the featured three dimensions of holistic education along with illustrative examples.

Inspiracją do napisania artykułu był tekst Sławomira Kapralskiego zatytułowany Milczenie – pamięć – tożsamość. Fantazmat „Cygana” i ambiwalencja nowoczesności („Ethos” 29(2016) nr 1(113), s. 185-202). Podzielając troskę Kapralskiego o losy wspólnoty narodowej obecnej w Europie od niepamiętnych czasów, autor artykułu podaje w wątpliwość diagnozę dotyczącą jej położenia politycznego. Przedmiotem polemiki są argumenty Kapralskiego odnośnie do trwałości romskiej pamięci; roli historii jako nauczycielki życia, skutecznie rywalizującej z romskim obyczajem (romanipen); a wreszcie umiejętności (i chęci) uczestnictwa Romów w debacie z innymi narodami na temat wspólnej przeszłości. Celem artykułu jest wykazanie, że sposób rozpamiętywania historii przez Romów pozornie tylko upodabnia ich do innych zbiorowości. O ile pamięć społeczna Romów zachowuje porównywalną trwałość, o tyle okazują się oni niezdolni do zamiany owej pamięci w pamięć kulturową. W wyniku tego Romowie, zamiast wyciągać wnioski z własnych doświadczeń, puszczają je w niepamięć. Podobnie ma się sprawa z ich uczestnictwem w dyskursie historiograficznym. To prawda, że historia Romów bywa (symbolicznie) zawłaszczana bądź unieważniana przez ich otoczenie polityczne. Odpowiedzialność za ten stan rzeczy ponoszą jednak oni sami. Nieobecni nie mają bowiem racji.
The present paper is inspired by Sławomir Kapralski’s article “Silence, Memory, Identity: The Phantasm of a ‘Gypsy’ and the Ambivalence of Modernity” (Ethos 29, no. 1 (2016): 185-202). While sharing Kapralski’s concern about the lot of the Roma, a national community present in Europe from time immemorial, the author questions Kapralski’s diagnosis of the actual political situation of the Roma. The object of the polemic is Kapralski’s arguments concerning the permanence of the memory of the Roma, the role of history as the teacher of life (which successfully competes with the Roma’s tradition—romanipen) and, last but not least, the capability (and willingness) of the Roma to participate, together with other nations, in the debate on their common future. The objective of the article is to demonstrate that the way the Roma conceive of their history is only apparently similar to that of other collectivities. While the Roma’s social memory preserves a similar permanence, they prove incapable of transforming this memory into a memory of culture. As a result, instead of drawing conclusions from their experience, the Roma tend to let this experience fade into oblivion. Their participation in the historiographic discourse largely follows similar lines. While it is the case that the history of the Roma is (symbolically) appropriated or annulled by their political environment, the responsibility for this state of affairs lies solely with the Roma themselves. The article presents an analysis of the dynamics of changes on the grounds of the deterministic chaos theory. In studying the dynamics of organization changes as ordered systems of deterministic dependencies certain phenomena may appear that are difficult to predict, which cause chaotic behavior of the system. The behavior results from a non-linear mechanism of functional and organizational ties. Non-linearity of the ties generates a high sensibility of the organization to changes, and in consequence a deterministic chaos.

This article examines a phenomenon associated with a certain – and today increasingly common – attitude in life that can most simply be described as the marriage of inauthenticity with imitationism. The author focuses her attention on feelings of love (as particularly ‘severe’, and at the same time probably the most mythologised), or rather on their literary depiction, which allows an accurate diagnosis to be made of the sensibility typical of a consumer society obsessed with money, subject to the dictates of mass media and under pressure from the ideals and ideas of pop culture. A diagnosis of this kind comes in the form of Jacek Dehnel’s short story Miłość korepetytora [Love of the Tutor], which together with three other stories comprises the volume Balzakiana (2008). The young Polish writer, attempting to determine the condition of Polish society after the political transformation in 1989, makes conscious reference to the distant tradition of realistic prose from the legacy of Honoré de Balzac. As for a review of the sphere of individual feelings and emotions falsified by various stereotypes and abstract ideas, one can look to a tradition closer to Dehnel: namely the only novel of Karol Irzykowski – Pałuba [The Hag] (1903). The article shows some commonalities between the Young Poland concept of ‘successive-world phenomena’ and the contemporary vision of determining the emotional sphere through pop culture templates on the experience of romantic elation. References to the diagnoses of Abraham Moles, Milan Kundera and Hermann Broch allow, additionally in the cited contexts, the issues of ‘exaltation as a replacement of spirituality’ and kitsch as ‘our daily aesthetic and morality’ to be highlighted.

Kategoria autentyczności, którą, posiłkując się dziełami literackimi, naukowo omówił Lionel Trilling w swojej książce Szczerość i autentyczność z 1972 roku, posłuży jako punkt wyjścia do rozważań nad autobiograficzną prozą Srđana Valjarevicia. Odwołując się do wartości, na których budował swoją filozofię sentymentalizm, serbski pisarz (ur. 1967) podejmuje próbę odnalezienia nowego lirycznego języka dla opisu otaczającego świata. Z tego powodu jego dokonania określić można mianem „nowej wrażliwości”. Ta nowa formuła altruizmu, pozwalająca twórcy na „bycie sobą”, jest alternatywną wobec form ostentacyjnego społecznikowskiego zaangażowania. „Subtelniejszy język” opartej na indywidualizmie podmiotowości słabej jest w stanie – zdaniem Valjarevicia – stawić opór problemom i kryzysom współczesnego świata.
The category of authenticity, which was scientifically discussed by Lionel Trilling in his book Sincerity and authenticity from 1972, is the starting point for considering Srđan Valjarević’s prose. Referring to the values on which he built his philosophy of sentimentality, the Serbian writer (born in 1967) attempts to find a new lyrical language for describing the surrounding world. For this reason, his achievements can be described as a “new sensibility”. This new form of altruism, a form that allows the artist “to be themselves” is an alternative to the forms of ostentatious social involvement. Based on the individuality the “subtler language” of the weak subjectivity is – according to Valjarević – able to resist the problems and crises of the modern world.

This article discusses the critical practice the author uses in her writing about El Vez, The Mexican Elvis. After offering a brief introduction to El Vez, to the artist Robert Lopez who created him, and to the relationship between them and the icon of Elvis, the author presents the aims of Make the Dream Real, the monograph she is drafting about El Vez/Lopez, to consider how it draws on biographical writing and yet departs from it. The author argues for a dramaturgical methodology and its inherent critical proximity as a means of writing an analytical, contextualized, engaging analysis of an artist and entertainer. The dramaturgical methodology, built on dramaturgical thinking, values flexibility, using a variety of research practices combined with vibrant autoethnographic writing to offer vivid analysis that conveys the intellectual, emotional, and somatic experience of attending a live El Vez performance. The article discusses the value of deep dramaturgical thinking and critical proximity that opens up primary sources and archives through an extended dialogue with the artist built on mutual trust and respect.
Artykuł dotyczy krytycznych strategii stosowanych przez autorkę w monografii El Veza, meksykańskiego Elvisa. Po krótkiej prezentacji El Veza, Roberta Lopeza, czyli artysty, który go stworzył, oraz relacji między nimi a ikoną Elvisa autorka określa cele Make the Dream Real, monografii El Veza/Lopeza, by pokazać, w jakiej mierze wykorzystuje w niej strategię biograficzną, a w jakiej od niej odchodzi. Autorka opowiada się za dramaturgiczną metodologią i wpisaną w nią zasadą krytycznej bliskości jako narzędziem umożliwiającym stworzenie analitycznej, kontekstowej i angażującej analizy twórczości i wizerunku artysty rozrywkowego. Dramaturgiczna metodologia, ufundowana na dramaturgicznym myśleniu, pozytywnie waloryzuje elastyczność i wykorzystuje różne praktyki badawcze i pisarskie, w tym autoetnograficzne, aby zaproponować sugestywną analizę odzwierciedlającą intelektualne, emocjonalne i somatyczne doświadczenie uczestniczenia w występie El Veza na żywo. Artykuł ukazuje wartość pogłębionego dramaturgicznego myślenia i krytycznej bliskości, dzięki którym źródła i archiwa poszerzone zostają o dialog z artystą oparty na wzajemnym zaufaniu i szacunku.

The main goal of the study is to show the novelty of Cabanis’s project. As a scientist, doctor and philosopher, the author of Rapports du physique et du moral de l’homme attempts to find a new science called anthropology, based mostly on physiology. There is also a discussion of how sensations are transformed (“translated”) into signs and ideas. In his dream of progress of human society, Cabanis has to navigate between the organic conception of the human being and vitalism, which can be seen as a critical approach to any scientific reductionism.

The author describes a mode of sensibility called ‘Camp’. She concentrates on the most characteristic features of it, especially on the ambivalence of any assessments, specific playful type of seriousness, theatricalization, artificiality, superior role of inverted commas and emphasis. While analyzing connections between Camp and homosexual subculture, the author stresses the role of the artists’ deepened self-consciousness and their deceitful distance towards their own works of art. Those features are especially noticeable in their playing with the conventions and with the principles of good taste. While describing the presence of Camp in the Polish literature, the author emphasises the roles of relativity, both aesthetical and moral. The elements of Camp are distinguished in the ‘banalistic’ literature and in the prose of Grzegorz Musiał, but the main part of the text is devoted to the prose of Michał Witkowski, in which we can find an intriguing combination of the sublimity and mockery, gloss and trumpery, spirituality and hedonism. Those features, inseparably connected with the stylistic of Camp, are constantly present in the prose of Witkowski. It makes him the most important representative of the discussed mode of sensibility in Poland.

This article concerns the legitimacy of the diagnosis of McKenzie that Marcuse’s philosophy speaks of what today is called organizational performance. But the main purpose of these considerations is to answer the question of whether the proposal to create a new civilization presented by Marcuse and the theoretical attempt to reconcile the pleasure principle with the reality principle is possible. Marcuse wanted to create the vision of a new society as an alternative to the existing industrial society. To this end, he combined Marx and Freud’s perspective because he considered that only the combination of theory of the productive forces and psychoanalytical considerations would help determine the necessary conditions for the emergence of a new, non-repressive reality. Marcuse called for the project of a new principle of reality which would also include the pleasure principle. It seems, however, he did not notice that mutation forces pass into normative forces. What Marcuse expected, on one hand, has been fulfilled, on the other, however, created a lot of disadvantages which he did not foresee.
Artykuł dotyczy słuszności diagnozy dokonanej przez McKenziego, że w filozofii Herberta Marcusego jest mowa o tym, co dzisiaj nazywa się performansem organizacyjnym. Ale głównym celem niniejszych rozważań jest znalezienie odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy propozycja stworzenia nowej cywilizacji przedstawiona przez Marcusego oraz próba teoretycznego pogodzenia zasady przyjemności z zasadą rzeczywistości jest możliwa. Marcuse przedstawia wizję nowego społeczeństwa jako alternatywę dla dotychczasowego społeczeństwa przemysłowego. Łączy on perspektywę Marksowską z Freudowską, a to dlatego, że uznał on, iż dopiero połączenie teorii sił wytwórczych i rozważań psychoanalitycznych pomoże ustalić niezbędne warunki do powstania nowej, nierepresywnej rzeczywistości. Nawoływał do stworzenia projektu nowej zasady rzeczywistości, która nie wykluczałaby zasady przyjemności. Wydaje się jednak, że nie zauważył on faktu, iż siły mutacyjne niemalże niepostrzeżenie przechodzą w siły normatywne. To, czego spodziewał się Marcuse, z jednej strony spełniło się, z drugiej zaś stworzyło szereg wątpliwości, jak i niedogodności praktycznych, których nie przewidział.

In this article, the author confronts two mash-up novels (novels, in which new motives and elements are added to the masterpieces of world’s literature) – Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith and Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters by Jane Austen and Ben H. Winters. The author shows how the new elements (zombies and sea monsters) are added to Jane Austen’s novels and underlines which elements have to be left in their original form, and which can be changed. The author also describes how the development of the new motives affects the ways of describing the world of the novel and its characters.
