    The present study examined the genre of Iraqi wedding invitation cards (WICs) in terms of its textual and visual components, and the impact of the social norms and assumptions on the articulation of these components. Drawing upon three analytic tools, namely, genre analysis proposed by Swales (1990) and Bhatia (2004), semiotic analysis suggested by Kress and Van Leeuwen (2001), and critical discourse analysis advocated by Fairclough (2010), a sample of 250 WICs was selected to be considered for analysis. Corpus analysis showed that Iraqi WICs varied in terms of their non-linguistic features like printed forms, colors, layouts, calligraphy, graphics, and paper materials. On the other hand, the underlying schematic organization of Iraqi WICs was built around seven component moves. Furthermore, Islamic religious beliefs and Iraqi socio-cultural system were clearly encoded in these wedding invitation texts affecting their organization structure.

    The text concerns the issue of children’s perception of God. I link it to the semiotic analysis and Charles Sanders Peirce’s triadic concept of sign. Making use of the theories as well as the interviews concerning the perception of the character of God I demonstrate that the child interprets the world through contact with symbolic reality and through giving reality some meaning. Giving meaning applies to listening to the message as well as to analysing the conditions under which it occurred in a specific situation and finally to interpreting received content. The analysis of the interviews was done on the basis of semiotic analysis.

    Considerando que los textos forman parte de los acontecimientos sociales como forma lingüística de interacción, el turismo como uno de los sectores más dinámicos de la economía a nivel mundial influye la manera de percibir otra(s) cultura(s). En el proceso del descubrimiento de lo ajeno radica la importancia de transmitir informaciones y generar ideas sobre una cultura distinta. El diálogo intercultural que se establece a través del lenguaje turístico enriquece no solo experiencias turísticas sino también es un instrumento poderoso que crea una visión más o menos objetiva de lo ajeno. Uno de los canales de comunicación turística más populares es el folleto. ¿Cómo se estructura un folleto y cuáles son sus rasgos lingüísticos típicos? En el presente estudio se dará respuesta a estas preguntas basándose en un corpus seleccionado de folletos turísticos editados en versión española (original y traducida del polaco).
    Considering that the texts are part of the social events such as linguistic form of interaction, tourism as one of the most dynamic sectors of the economy in the world influence the way we perceive other(s) culture(s). It is the process of exploration of foreign cultures trough language. The intercultural dialogue that is set through the tourist language enriches not only tourist experiences but is a powerful instrument that creates more or less objective visions. One of the most popular channels of tourist communication is the tourist brochure. What is the structure and the linguistic traits of the brochure? In the present study, we will answer these questions based on a corpus selected of tourist brochures edited in Spanish version (original and translated from the Polish).
    Teksty kultury odgrywają różne role życiu społecznym w postaci językowej formy oddziaływań, a teksty promocji turystycznej wpływają na sposób postrzegania innych kultur. W procesie poznania obcości, teksty turystyczne stanowią łącznik informacyjno-wyobrażeniowy w przekazie obcych realiów. Dialog międzykulturowy, jaki nawiązuje się poprzez językową formę promocji turystycznej opisu rzeczywistości, sprzyja wzbogaceniu doświadczenia turysty. Jednym znajbardziej rozpowszechnionych kanałów komunikacji w tej dziedzinie jest folder turystyczny. Jaka jest jego struktura i jakie językowe elementy opisu zawiera? W niniejszym artykule, autorka wskazuje typowe i wspólne cechy budowy folderu turystycznego i opisu językowego w oparciu okorpus tekstowy w języku hiszpańskim i polskim.

Artykuł jest głosem w dyskusji na temat współczesnego znaczenia wizualności i porusza zagadnienia ważne zwłaszcza dla pedagogów. Cel badań: Przedmiotem rozważań jest wskazanie różnych dyskursów związanych z wizualnością ze szczególnym zwróceniem uwagi na rozumienie komunikatów wizualnych w edukacji. Celem podjętych badań jest sprawdzenie tezy, czy dzieło sztuki malarskiej może być płaszczyzną wspólnych znaczeń. W szerszej perspektywie pytamy, czy można traktować alternatywnie komunikację werbalną i wizualną. Metoda badań: Metody wykorzystane do badań to: analiza semiotyczna „dzieła otwartego” i analiza dyskursu. Wyniki: Oprócz indywidualnych analiz semiotycznych wywiadów studenckich zostały opracowane tabele różnic i podobieństw. W analizach znaczeniowych i dyskursywnych pokazano podobieństwa i różnice w postrzeganiu obrazów przez badane studentki, a także dyskursy, które powstały w trakcie wizualnego komunikowania się przez obrazy. Wnioski: Na podstawie analizy jednostkowej i znaczeniowej wywiadów studenckich – można stwierdzić, że zarówno znaki w obrazach, jak i znaczenia tworzone przez osoby badane stanowią swego rodzaju nośniki komunikacyjne. Dyskursy wizualne obrazów stają się płaszczyzną, na podstawie której jest możliwa komunikacja i porozumienie między badanymi.
    Introduction: The widespread availability of mobile technologies has resulted in changes in interpersonal communication in favor of a significant increase in visual communication. The growing role of the visual representation in communication processes gives rise to, e.g. questions: about the assessment of its effectiveness in comparison with the verbal message, about the chances of intercultural understanding beyond the language, as well as about the effects of language marginalization for the development of culture, in particular language culture. The text below is a voice in the discussion on the contemporary meaning of visuality and raises issues that are important especially for educators. Research Aim: The subject of consideration is to indicate various contexts related to visuality, with particular emphasis on the understanding of graphic messages in education. The aim of the undertaken research was to check the thesis whether a work of painterly art can be a plane of common meanings. In a broader perspective, we ask whether verbal and visual communication can be treated alternatively. Method: The methods used for the research are: semiotic analysis of the “open work” and discourse analysis. Results: In addition to individual semiotic analyzes of student interviews, tables of differences and similarities were developed. The semantic and discursive analyzes show the similarities and differences in the perception of images by the surveyed female students, as well as the discourses that arose in the course of visual communication through images. Conclusion: Based on the individual and semantic analysis of student interviews, it can be concluded that both the signs in the images and the meanings created by the respondents are a kind of communication carriers. Visual discourses of images become a platform on the basis of which communication and understanding between the subjects is possible.

    Memy interenetowe to zróżnicowane formy wizualne: od obrazka z błyskotliwym podpisem do różnorodnych grafik, ruchomych lub statycznych, często zawierających większe partie tekstu. Mem jako nośnik informacji jest formatem złożonym – wyczerpuje po części definicję gatunku dziennikarskiego. Analiza memów wymaga przemyślanej metodologii. W wypadku tego krótkiego, acz wieloaspektowego minigatunku niezbędne są mieszane metody badawcze. Warto przy tym pamiętać, że mem jako jednostka to nie tylko warstwa wizualna i słowna, ale również wachlarz narzędzi – możliwość oceny oraz skomentowania przez użytkowników.
    Internet memes are differentiated visual forms: ranging from images with witty captions to various mobile or static graphics, which often contain larger fragments of text. A meme as a carrier of information is a complex unit, which partly uses the definition of journalistic writing. The anlaysis of memes requires careful methodology. In the case of this short but multiaspectual mini-genre, mixed research methods are necessary. It is worth remembering that a meme, as a unit, is not only a visual and verbal layer, but also a spectrum of tools, the possibility of assessment and comments by users.

    The problem around which this study was constructed is the contemporary art and a person, who creates this art – an artist, and their authentic perception by the child. A modern vision of the child too often shows the artist in a distorted, incomplete or reduced way. This kind of children knowledge, based on the patterns and stereotypes, reduces the reflectivity of children, unnecessarily distorts their judgment and closes the road ahead to a full and critical participation in the world. The study is based on the analysis of interviews and children’s drawings centered around the perception of the profile of an artist by children. It results from the analysis of the research material gathered during the study that this is a stereotypical vision, and the artist is still associated with a person who remains beyond the reach of “normal” society. The conducted research shows the diversity of the types of meanings that children aged 5–7 attribute to the term “artist” and “artistry”. The naive ideas on this subject created by children prove to be a collection of beliefs of a partially common and often completely different nature. For a pedagogue, the ultimate purpose of the research is to obtain knowledge which will allow effective changes in education, in this case, in art education. The investigation of meanings which children attribute to concepts concerning the artistic phenomena may allow to create a strategy of transmission of knowledge of art history and to design the creative activities connected with the broadly-understood visual arts.

    Tematem artykułu są refleksje dotyczące fotografii jako narzędzia medialnego, upowszechniającego wiedzę o współczesnych konfliktach wojennych na przykładzie fotografii konfliktu na wschodniej Ukrainie. W analizie fotografii wykorzystano technikę ilościowej analizy zawartości oraz analizę semiotyczną. Na potrzebę analizy ilościowej opracowano klucz kategoryzacyjny, obejmujący kategorie formalne i merytoryczne służące do opisu zdjęć. Analizą szczegółową objęte zostały fotografie, które użytkownicy umieścili na wyselekcjonowanych postach portali społecznościowych Facebook i Vkontakte w okresie od 1.04.2014 r. do 31.12.2014 r. Ogółem materiał badawczy stanowiło 197 fotografii, w tym 112 opublikowanych na portalu Facebook i 85 na portalu Vkontakte. Wyniki analiz własnych posłużyły do poszukiwań odpowiedzi na pytania bardziej szczegółowe, których zakres zamknąć można w następujących polach problemowych: stylistyka i formy kompozycyjne fotograficznej dokumentacji działań wojennych, realizm czy manipulacja w fotograficznych narracjach wojennych, charakterystyka strategii przekazów wojennych w mediach społecznościowych.
    The subject of the article relates to reflections on photography as a media tool, disseminating knowledge about contemporary war conflicts on the example of the photographs of conflict in eastern Ukraine. To analyse the photography quantital content-analysis and semiotic analysis techniques were employed. For the needs of quantitative analysis, a categorizing key was elaborated, which included form and substance categories to describe photographs. The detailed analysis covered all the photos that users posted on Facebook and Vkontakte social networking posts from 1.04.2014 to 31.12.2014. In all, the research material consisted of 197 randomly selected photographs, 112 published on Facebook and 85 on Vkontakte. The results of own analyses were used to find answers to more detailed questions, which can be closed in the following problem areas: stylistic and composite forms of photographic documentation of warfare, realism or manipulation in photographic narratives of the war, characteristics of war strategy in social media.

    Artykuł skupiony jest na tematyce memów internetowych z memetycznej perspektywy. Głównym jego celem jest próba odtworzenia narracji wizualno-tekstowej zbrojnego konfliktu ukraińsko‑rosyjskiego w memach na portalach Facebook i Vkontakte. Podjęte refleksje ukazały, że aktywność transmiterów pozwala na wyodrębnienie dwóch sposobów przekazywania i multiplikowania memów. Pierwszy sposób to pojedyncza ekspresja bez rozwijania wątków,  drugi zaś to tworzenie rozbudowanej sekwencji memów. Przeprowadzona analiza zawartości memów pozwoliła na ustalenie dwóch podstawowych mechanizmów kształtowania określonych wizerunków stron globalnego konfliktu. Pierwszy polega na wzmacnianiu pozytywnego wizerunku Rosji (rola akredytacyjna inspiratora w aktywnościach propagandowych), drugi zaś to strategia wzmacniania negatywnego wizerunku Ukrainy (rola dyskredytacyjna oponenta, przeciwnika).
    Article is focused on the theme of Internet memes from the perspective of memetics. The main purpose of the article is an attempt to recreating the visual-textual narrative of the Ukraine–Russian conflict in social media: Facebook and Vkontakte. The reflections showed that the activity of transmitters allows for the definition two ways of transmitting and multiplying memes. The first method is a single meme expression without developing threads, and the second one consists in creating an extensive sequence of memes. The analysis of the content of the memes made it possible to determine two basic mechanisms for the strengthening images of the parties of the global conflict. The first — strengthening the positive image of Russia (the accreditation role of the inspector in propaganda activities) and the second – a strategy to strengthen the negative image of Ukraine (the role of the opponent's discrediting opponent).

    There is a dearth of critical ethnographic research that focuses on the semiotic-discursive features of corporate social responsibility (CSR) framing in business and nonprofit (BUS-NPO) partnerships. This article contributes to CSR scholarship by combining ethnographic methods (participant observation, in-depth interviews, and textual materials) and semiotic analysis to demonstrate how a bank-NPO partnership is discursively framed in the context of agonistic interactions and its implications in terms of cooptation. This article crystallizes two arguments. First, the bank’s joint CSR initiatives represent a discursively framed and validated model of CSR as a commodity aiming at advancing bank interests at the cost of avoiding substantive and sustained social responsibility. Second, the joint CSR model, discursively framed as a cooptative partnership discourse, is effectively realized through the practices of the cooptative relationship between the bank and the NPOs.

    Today, meditation is seen not only as an element of the religious and spiritual life of the broadly understood East, but also as a popular health practice available to any European media consumer, as well as one of the most sought-after applications of digital devices. The author describes the multilevel rhetorical structure and aesthetic organization of the mindfulness-meditation videos in Russian and Polish, emphasizing the harmonizing potential of the analyzed media texts.
    Сегодня медитация рассматривается не только как элемент религиозно-духовной жизни широко понимаемого Востока, но и как популярная оздоровительная практика, доступная любому европейскому медиапотребителю, а также одно из наиболее востребованных приложений цифровых устройств. Автор описывает многоуровневую риторическую структуру и эстетическую организацию текста аудиовизуальной mindfulness-медитации на русском и польском языке, уделяя особое внимание гармонизирующему потенциалу данного медиатекста.
    Dziś medytacja postrzegana jest nie tylko jako element życia religijnego i duchowego szeroko rozumianego Wschodu, ale także jako popularna praktyka prozdrowotna dostępna dla każdego europejskiego konsumenta mediów oraz jedna z najbardziej poszukiwanych aplikacji urządzeń cyfrowych. Autor opisuje wielopoziomową strukturę retoryczną i organizację estetyczną audiowizualnego tekstu medytacji uważności w języku rosyjskim i polskim, zwracając szczególną uwagę na harmonizujący potencjał tej odmiany tekstu medialnego.

    Opis:
    In this article the texts of television commentaries from sports events are analysed. Sports competition is only a pretext and pre¬ text for a linguist. However, these two elements are semantically and chronologically related. The competition must appear first, so that the commentary can be created – a reportage, an interview with a sportsman or an informative description. A linguist is interested in a number of questions; which genre does the media presenter use to describe the sports event in his medium, what is characteristic for these models, what is characteristic for a presenter himself and his discursive perspective? The author of the article consolidates the knowledge gained in the past and uses the tools of textology, genology and discourse analysis in her research on the subject.

    Opis:
    The tendency to create messages using the elements belonging to different semiotic systems shifts our perception of a communicative act, contributing to the establishment of multimodal and intersemiotic communication practice. A visual metaphor is seen as one of the instances of a multimodal and intersemiotic message, which generates a text that is revealed gradually, uncovering numerous layers of meaning encoded within a metaphor and within visual, linguistic, and spatial settings it is placed in. The paper sets out to explore the notion of a visual metaphor and focuses on the application of the visual metaphor ‘global warming’ on posters created for the needs of public awareness campaigns, investigating simultaneous manifestation of iconic and metaphorical mappings in the given visual metaphor.

    Opis:
    Prezentowane analizy mają na celu opisanie społecznego dyskursu na temat procesu usamodzielniania wychowanków pieczy zastępczej. Mają one charakter wstępny i są zorientowane na przygotowanie metodologicznego i teoretycznego projektu szerzej zakrojonego procesu badawczego poświęconego tejże tematyce. Przedstawiane analizy są osadzone w podejściu określonym mianem krytycznej analizy dyskursu (CDA). W rezultacie analiz dokonano identyfikacji głównych form językowych ekspresji, składających się na treść analizowanego dyskursu. W kontekście przeprowadzonych analiz dokonano także rekonstrukcji dyskursywnie wytwarzanego podmiotu procesu przejścia pomiędzy opieką zastępczą a życiem samodzielnym, wraz z przypisywanymi mu charakterystykami.
    The presented analyses aim at depicting social discourse concerning the process of care leaving. They are of a preliminary nature and are intended to prepare methodological, and theoretical grounds for a larger research project devoted to this issue. The analyses are conducted in the framework of critical discourse analysis (CDA). The analyses facilitated the identification of major linguistic forms (tokens), as well as their broader clusters (genres), constituting the content of the investigated discourse. Moreover, the reconstruction of a discursively created subject of the transition from foster care to independent life (i.e., the care leaver) was performed in the context of these analyses, together with characteristics assigned to the subject.
