Opis:
The present paper explores Durtal’s conversion as the refusal of any fixed reference. The reflections of the hero on his personal experience, but also on the social transformations are characterised by the metaphysical seriousness and semantic experiments. The constant lexical substitution arouses the curiosity of the reader: its referential opacity is only apparent. Thus, the writer emphasizes that going beyond the beaten path requires a new mode of expression where meaning no longer depends on the rehashing of commonplaces, but relies on semantic mismatches and prolonged tensions between juxtaposed terms. Likewise, social transformations strongly disapproved of by the hero become the source of paradoxical reasoning where truth is expressed through the negativity of judgment. Nevertheless, despite the lucidity of his social and ethical judgments, Durtal remains blind to the imperfection of his own conversion. Moreover, the frequent recourse to paradox demonstrates that the protagonist is still in doubt which announce a long spiritual path of true conversion.

Opis:
In this paper, I report new empirical data on folk semantic intuitions concerning color adjectives in so-called context-shifting experiments. Contextualists present such experiments — that is, they describe different conversational contexts in which a given sentence is uttered — in order to argue that context can shape meaning and truth conditions to such a degree that competent speakers would give opposite truth evaluations of the same sentence in different contexts. The initial findings of Hansen and Chemla (2013) suggest that laypersons’ semantic judgments are sensitive to context in the same way that is predicted by contextualists. In this paper, I focus on context-shifting experiments that involve color adjectives; also, I present experiments that are a partial replication and methodological extension of Hansen and Chemla’s study. One aim of my study was to corroborate these authors’ findings using a bigger sample (total N = 1128), but the main goal was to test the stability of results in different methodological variants of empirical adaptations of context-shifting experiments. This part of the study addresses the issues pointed out in my earlier paper (Ziółkowski 2017), where I argued that certain experimental settings (within-subjects) might bring data that is more favorable to contextualism than other settings (between-subjects). My study compares three different experimental settings: within-subjects (with randomized order of context presentation), between-subjects (where participants evaluating different contexts aredistinct groups), and “contrastive design” (where both contexts are presented side by side on the same screen). My results are highly consistent across the methodological variants I employed, but while they show some of the effects expected by contextualists, it is disputable whether they bring strong support to contextualism with respect to color adjectives.

Opis:
This article presents a lexico-semantic analysis of Nikolay Gumilev’s “Garden of the Soul” poem (1907). In the early 20th century, there appeared a special type of depiction in art – a depiction of the author’s inner state. Analyzing the idiostyles (individual styles) of the poets from the Silver Age, we have defined it as a psychological self-portrait, the type of character depiction wherein the poet uses the artistic format to characterize his or her mental state when creating the work of art. One of NikolayGumilev’s early poems, “Gardens of the Soul” (1907), fits into the category of the psychological self-portrait. In his early poems, the poet had already demonstrated the basic features of the future neo-romantic trend in Russian poetry, known as acmeism (from the Greek Üêìç (acme), the height of the blossoming season), founded by Nikolay Gumilev himself. By opposing themselves to the symbolists, the acmeists turned to the description of the material world. First and foremost, they tended to replace the referent with characterization in metaphorical constructions, and describe abstract notions through analogies with the material world. In his poem “Gardens of the Soul” the author describes his inner world through the metaphor of the garden. On route from referent denotations of the words garden and soul to the metaphorical meaning of the phrase “gardens of the soul”, the readers find themselves neutralizing the concrete semantic components, while other semantic components are actualized. The study uses lexicosemantic analysis and socio-philological experiments. The article summarizes the results of a survey, in which the respondents of various age and social groups interpret the text of the poem. The metaphorical transfer between the notions of the soul and the garden is carried out through not one, but several ways: epidigmatic (3%), lexicosemantic (39%), attributive (25%) and lexico-derivational (33%).
