This introduction presents the LSMLL volume that follows (volume entitled “Self-Narratives and Society”), and discusses five propositions: I. Self-narratives may be analyzed as rediscoveries of what the self is not, i.e. society in particular; II. Beyond questionable distinctions between autobiography, autofiction and testimonies, selfnarratives may be defined interculturally (with help from the Englishspeaking world) as (predominantly reflexive) forms of life narratives and examples of life-writing; III. Autobiography and autofiction can’t file for divorce; IV. We should joyfully call for the end of [La] *Francophonie, substitute what could be abbreviated as LEF (littérature d’expression française) to the unfortunate expression littérature *francophone, and/or play on semantic neutrality and signal the *Francophone imposture with a (typographical) countersign: *francophone, *Francophonie; V. The “culturality” inherent to self-narratives opens itself up to the question of minorities.

Opis:
Studies on narcissism and narcissistic personality disorder often emphasize the key role of self-esteem in the mechanisms of this disorder. In previous studies, self-esteem has often been treated as a permanent feature of an individual and has been tested using self-report questionnaires or, in some cases, using experimental methods. Assuming that self-esteem may differ depending on the situation, different methods should be used in order to observe and study the processes related to it. In order to collect self-narratives for the purposes of the study, a semi-structured interview method was prepared to examine the self-esteem regulation in social situations. During the interview, the participant answers questions related to personal life experiences. Based on the content of interviews of participants with a high level of narcissistic traits selected from 20 conducted interviews, a preliminary analysis of the proactivity and defensiveness of self-narratives was conducted. The analysis mainly concerns the autonarratives of experiences related to failures and conflicts as events particularly significant for the self-esteem of an individual. The results of the preliminary analyzes allow us to present conclusions regarding proactivity and defensiveness as well as the characteristics of self-narratives referring to self-esteem in narcissistic group.

Opis:
The objective of the study is to apply eight hypotheses of the socioanalysis for the interpretation and critical social reading of the "self-narratives" of deaf applicants to Higher Education at the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS-Brazil). It is located in the theoretical-methodological field of Critical Discourse Analysis  (CDA), and Deaf Studies (DS). We will analyze a narrative of a deaf subject, corpus collected in 2014, in the college entrance examination for the Brazilian Sign Language Course (LIBRAS), and adopt this methodological guideline, to define object of study;  identify areas of interfaces that meet the objectives; select the categories of each area of interface; establish the dialogue between categories;  identify the social meanings constructed in the discourse. The result confirms the role of socioanalysis in seeking to unveil how the practice of social relations and (re)construction of their identities in the struggle for citizenship rights articulate in the deaf individual's life.

Artefact, American Culture, Meta ction, Self-consciousness, grand narratives
Opis:
Kurt Vonnegut’s position that artists should be treasured as alarm systems and as biological agents of change comes most pertinent in his two great novels. The selected English novels of the past century – Cat’s Cradle (1963), Slaughterhouse Five (1969), and Breakfast of Champions (1973) – connect the world of fiction to the harsh realities of the world via creative metafictional strategies, making literature an alarm coated with the comforting lies ofstorytelling. It is metafi ction that enables Vonnegut to create different understandings of historical events by writing a kind of literature that combines facts and fiction. Defi ned as a kind of narrative that “self-consciously and systematically draws attention to its status as artefact” metafiction stands against the duplicitous “suspension of disbelief” that is simply an imitation and interpretation of presumed realities. As a postmodern mode of writing it opts for an undisguised narration that undermines not only the author’s univocal control over fiction but also challenges the established understanding of the ideas. Multidimensional display of events and thoughts by Vonnegut works in direction of metafiction to give readers a self-conscious awareness of what they read. Hiroshima bombing in 1946 and the destruction of Dresden in Germany by allied forces in World War II are the subjects of the selected novels respectively. In them Vonnegut presents a creative account in the form of playful fictions. The study aims to investigate how the novelist portrayed human mentality of the American culture by telling self-referentialstories that focus on two historical events and some prevailing cultural problems.

Opis:
Most Finnish university students, just like the other new global elites (Kramsch, 2013), use English without problems. Some students, however, struggle with English to the extent that their studies suffer. One could say that they have a deeply “wounded” English self (Karlsson, 2013). My context of research and practice is the Autonomous Learning Modules (ALMS) at Helsinki University Language Centre. In my work as a language counsellor and practitioner-researcher, pedagogical concerns are always primary, and there is a need to appreciate diversity yet notice every student’s unique experiences. The broad background of my recent work is English as part of the identity of young academic Finns. In particular, I have been interested in how students with a “wounded” English self can develop new identity positions, and in how a language counsellor can help them in this process. In this paper, my focus is on the subtle practical interconnections between learner autonomy, learner diversity, and learner identity as they emerge in a diary written by a student of English with dyslexia and language (classroom) anxiety. A narrative case study of Mariia illustrates how the counsellor’s appreciation and her own recognition of the complex ecological realities (Casanave, 2012) surrounding and interacting with her learning encourage and empower her. Mariia uses her freedom to control her own learning (Huang & Benson, 2013) and makes choices from the many lifewide experiential learning opportunities in her life (Karlsson & Kjisik, 2011). Reflective writing in the learning diary helps her to construct a realistic vision of herself as a learner and user of English, and she leaves the identity position of a failure in the classroom and claims a new, more successful one (Norton, 2014).

Opis:
A better understanding of the multifaceted, dynamic and situated identity of the language learner stands at the center of much current SLA research. One of the main ways in which it is investigated is through the examination of autobiographical language learning histories. In an effort to better understand some of the processes which lead to a motivated, confident and successful language learner and user, this article analyzes the language learning histories of two EFL student-teachers, notable for their commitment to the learning and teaching of English. A close analysis of their narratives, focusing on thematic, stylistic and performative aspects, reveals what narrative psychologist McAdams (2006) has called “redemptive” patterns, that is, narrative structures in which hardship leads to inner growth and difficulties become “springboards” (Pals, 2006) to success. The two narrators also display a similar flexibility in their evolving self-positioning in response to the difficulties they narrate, and for both, attachment to the imagined community of Anglophone popular culture is an essential component in this process. Together, the learning experiences delineated in the accounts support the call for student-focused pedagogy, which puts emphasis on creating a positive emotional atmosphere, on the one hand, and providing rich intercultural knowledge, on the other.

Opis:

Opis:
The article is aimed at presenting the usability of some aspects of self-narrative analysis in clinical diagnosis. Clinical diagnosis concerns not only the identification of nosological categories, mechanisms of psychopathology, or etiology, but also familiarity with patients’ self-experience. It is assumed that the patient’s narrative is a psychological phenomenon in itself; it is a way of construing and re-experiencing his or her disorder. Therefore, self-narrative analysis is expected to lead to an understanding of how psychopathology is construed in language. As the leading theoretical approach, the model of narrative development proposed by Salvatore, Dimaggio, & Semerari (2004) was chosen. In order to illustrate narrative analysis, examples of paranoid personality self-narrative accounts are presented.

Opis:
In this text, the Author carries out theoretical discussion and presents the outcomes of her studies of the shaping process of women's identity in the context of a human (auto)biography, referring to the category of identity, putting particular stress to the educational biography, called a special type of a thematic biography (important for the category of identity), and a category of narration, of key importance for comprehending the phenomenon of auto(biography). A human biography is an invaluable source of information on their life and the person her/himself. Getting acquainted with the biography, looking for information about a given person, learning her/his story from her/himself (biography passed through an autobiographical account) or from the biographical materials, e.g. diaries, letters, memoirs and recollection of others. The Author says that one of the identity criteria is the sense of one's own continuity in time. This criterion can be fulfilled thanks to the autobiographical memory, or a memory of personal episodes and autobiographical facts. The problems of biography are closely connected with the autobiographical memory. In the text the Author presents three intertwined categories: identity, autobiographical memory and biography.
